Welcome to Kofax® Express

Introduction

Kofax Express is an easy-to-use, batch-oriented document scan application capable of high-speed scanning with real-time image display, indexing, and bar code detection. VirtualReScan (VRS) technology is built into the application to ensure optimal image quality. Kofax Express can release captured content to a folder that is accessible to your document management or storage system. Kofax Express can also release content directly to Kofax Capture or Microsoft SharePoint.
This guide explains how to quickly install and get started with Kofax Express.

Certified Operating Systems

Kofax Express is certified on the following Microsoft Windows operating systems:
Windows Vista (Enterprise and Business editions, 32-bit)
To use Kofax Express with Windows Vista, your scanner must have a Vistacertified driver. Check with the manufacturer to confirm that your scanner will work with Windows Vista.
Windows XP Professional, SP2
For updated information related to operating systems and service packs, visit the Support pages on the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com.

Certified Scanners

Kofax Express is certified with a wide range of industry-standard scanners, and new scanners are certified on a regular basis. For the most current list of Kofax Express certified scanners, select the Scanner Configurator from the Support pages on the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com.

Image Storage

By default, Kofax Express stores images in the common application data folder located within the Documents and Settings folder (or the Users folder on a Windows Vista computer). Be sure to reserve sufficient disk space for images. You can use the Job Setup tab in Kofax Express to set the batch path to the appropriate folder before you scan.

Installation

Use the procedure in this section to install Kofax Express. To complete the installation, you will need the Kofax Express installation disk.
X To install Kofax Express
1 At the computer where you want to install Kofax Express, log in with
Administrator rights and close all other applications.
2 Connect your scanner to the computer, but do not power on the scanner until
later in the procedure.
3 Insert your Kofax Express installation disk into the disk drive.
The installer should start automatically. If it does not, run setup.exe, which is
available from the root folder of your Kofax Express installation disk.
4 Once the installer is displayed, click Next to proceed, and then follow the
instructions on the screen to complete the installation process.
During the installation, you will be prompted to accept the license agreement,

Express software on your computer.
2 Kofax Express Getting Started Guide
5 When you are notified that the installation is complete, select the option to
restart your computer and click Finish.
Important Do not remove the Kofax Express installation disk before you restart the computer. Some additional components, including scanner drivers, may be installed from the disk after the computer is restarted.
6 Power on your scanner.
Note If your scanner has a SCSI connector, you must restart the computer
again once the scanner is powered on.

Kofax Express Jobs

Kofax Express is based on the concept of a “job,” which is a saved configuration of settings related to the documents that you scan. A job consists of bar code and index definitions as well as settings related to document separation, release, and more. Within a job, you create batches that consist of scanned documents and images.
A predefined job called “Scan to Desktop” is opened automatically the first time you start Kofax Express. This job includes a set of predefined index fields and contains an empty batch called “Batch001.” Using the predefined job, you can easily acquaint yourself with the application and start scanning immediately (see Starting Kofax Express on page 4).
Tip Your Kofax Express installation includes three predefined jobs. For more information, see the Demo Jobs topic in the Help.
A Kofax Express job also includes the following:
Batches: Groups of scanned documentsDocuments: Sets of one or more related imagesImages: Electronic representations of scanned pagesPages: Physical sheets fed through the scanner to produce images

Scan Profiles

Each job is also associated with scan settings, which are saved in profiles. Each scan profile is a saved combination of scanner and VRS settings that are applied during a scan operation to achieve the best possible image quality. The profile settings are based on (and optimized for) the currently selected scanner.
If desired, you can update the scan settings to suit your preferences for page size, resolution, color mode, simplex or duplex scanning, rotation, blank page deletion, automatic color detection, and more.
You can create your own scan profiles or use the predefined profiles.
Kofax Express Getting Started Guide 3
Kofax Express comes with two predefined scan profiles:
Default: This profile supports excellent image quality for most document types.Automatic: This profile is optimized for use on high performance computers,
and it also supports excellent image quality for most document types.
Each time you connect to a scanner, the predefined scan profiles are refreshed with the appropriate settings. Scan profiles help save time, because they give you a convenient way to save and reuse preferred scan settings. For more information, see the Working with Scan Profiles topic in the Help.

Starting Kofax Express

Getting started is simple: start and register Kofax Express, select your scanner, and you are ready to scan.
When you start Kofax Express, a predefined job called “Scan to Desktop” is opened. The job name and batch name are listed in the title bar of the application window. The job settings are preconfigured so you can start scanning immediately.
When you close Kofax Express and reopen it, the Scan to Desktop job is opened again unless you create or open another job. By default, Kofax Express opens the most recent job each time you start the application.

Indexing Documents

Kofax Express supports the ability to set up index fields to represent the content of the documents that you scan. Indexing is a two-part process:
Configure the index fields before you scan.Select Key from Image to index the documents after you scan.

Configuring Index Fields

Once you determine how many index fields to apply to each document, you can use the Index Setup tab to configure the values (based on bar codes, document numbers, image counts, and more) that are automatically assigned, as well as the values that are to be manually entered. You can also set up a validation mask to verify the accuracy of the index field values. For more information, see the Index Setup Tab topic in the Help.

Selecting Key from Image to Index Documents

To perform indexing and verification, you click Key from Image to switch to indexing mode. While indexing mode is active, the Key from Image panel and navigation toolbar (Figure 5) are displayed on the right side of the application
window. In this mode, you can view and verify automatically applied index values, or you can manually enter the values. While you are in indexing mode, the index
fields cannot be configured; indexing is intended strictly for verification or entry of index fields. For more information, see the Home Tab - Index Group topic in the Help.
