Finding a Location for the 8660 Printer
(
)
As you look for an appropriate location for the 8660 printer, keep the
following guidelines in mind. Refer to “Site Specifications” for specific
requirements.
•
Allow 2 inches (5 cm) on the left, right, and top sides for air flow and
cooling. The back of the 8660 printer may be placed flush against a
wall.
•
Avoid placing the 8660 printer in areas where ventilation ducts, open
doors, or frequent passers-by might expose it to debris. Airborne dirt
particles can cause image quality problems.

Leave the top cover closed except when you need to access the inside
of the 8660 printer.
Storing Ribbon Cartridges
For highest image quality, store ribbon cartridges as follows:
•
Store unopened ribbon cartr idges at temperatures below 77˚F (24˚C).
Avoid exposure to temperatures higher than 100˚F (38˚C).
•
Keep partially used ribbon cartr idges in their original wrappers to

The time it takes to print an image depends upon the application and the
type of image being printed. Some images take much longer to print than
others. A file made up of lines generally takes less time to print than a file
that is defined in bits, such as a scanned image.

Scheduling Jobs
The number of jobs that can be queued to the 8660 printer at once
depends upon the memory available in the 8660 printer. If you send large
files, fewer jobs can be processed. Installing additional memory in the
8660 printer increases the number of jobs that can be processed at the
same time. Ref
memory to the 8660 printer.

Color Management
If the 8660 printer is on a network, the network configuration affects job
scheduling. When the 8660 printer is on a network, it polls the ports in a
round robin manner. When it receives a job, it stops polling until the job is
complete. The 8660 printer then looks to the next port in the list.
The position of the ports in the list affects the order in which jobs are
processed. When a job is sent is not the only determinant of when it will
be processed and printed.
Handling and Storing Prints
The image stability of thermal prints depends upon factors such as
temperature, relative humidity, and exposure to light or to biological or
chemical contaminates. Using XtraLife ribbon increases the stability and
durability of your prints.
Your thermal images will last a long time if you use these guidelines for
handling and storing them:

• Remove prints from the exit area ONLY AFTER the 8660 printer ejects
them.
Operator’s Guide
• Do NOT put a print back into the paper tray. Doing so can cause jams
and loss of completed prints.
• Handle prints as little as possible. When handling prints, make sure
your hands are clean and free of food, oil, and grease. Wear clean
gloves when possible, and hold prints by the edges.
• Store thermal prints in a cool, dr y environment free of chemical
contamination.
• Avoid storing prints at temperatures higher than 72˚F (25˚C) for
extended periods.
• A relative humidity between 30% and 50% is ideal.
• Avoid exposure to high intensity light sources, particularly fluorescent
light and sunlight which are rich in ultraviolet radiation.
• Avoid exposure to vinyl items (those made of polyvinyl chloride) or any
plastic which contains plasticizer. These items usually have a distinct
“plastic” odor.
• Do not place objects on top of the 8660 printer.

Keeping the 8660 Printer in Good Working
Condition
To keep the 8660 printer in good working condition:

Cleaning the 8660 Printer
To help ensure good performance and high-quality output, make sure the
operating environment is clean and dust free.
Clean the 8660 printer regularly as described below.
Before you begin, turn the 8660 printer off and unplug it.
• Wipe the covers, the paper tray area, and the paper tray with distilled or
deionized water and a damp, lint-free cloth. This eliminates dust buildup and prevents dirt from getting into the 8660 printer.
CAUTION: Never use abrasives or harsh chemicals to clean any part
of the 8660 printer. Do not use alcohol cleaning pads to
clean the cabinet.
• Clean the area around and under the printer to prevent dirt from getting
into the 8660 printer.

Error Messages and How to Resolve Them
Error messages indicate that a problem has occurred. More than one
problem can occur at a time. However, only one error message appears
on the display panel at a time. Messages related to high-pr ior ity problems
are displayed before lower priority ones.
You must resolve problems in the order in which they appear. For
example, CLOSE COVER may appear on the display panel. After you
close the top cover, a paper mismatch message may appear. After you
correct the mismatch and there are no other errors, READY appears.
The following are common error messages. Click on the error message to
learn about the possible cause for the error message and a solution for
the problem.

Ribbon Cartridge and Paper Size Mismatches
Mismatches result from differences in the requested ribbon cartridge type
and paper size and the paper and ribbon cartridge loaded in the pr inter.
Ribbon T ype Mismatch
If the print job specifies a ribbon car tridge type that is not loaded, a
mismatch occurs. Ribbon cartr idge mismatches result from:
Operator’s Guide
Printing Guide
Color Management
• Lamination differences (for example, XtraLife ribbon is requested but is
not loaded). You can press Pr int to print the job with the currently
loaded ribbon, but lamination will not occur.
• Image size diff erences (for example, a large image size is requested but
an oversize ribbon cartridge is not loaded). Change the ribbon
cartridge, or press Cancel to cancel the job.
• Ribbon color differences (for example, black-only printing is requested
but a color ribbon is loaded). Change the ribbon car tridge, or press
Cancel to cancel the job.
Paper Size Mismatch
If the print job specifies a paper size that is not loaded, a mismatch
occurs. There are two types of size mismatches:
• The image size does not fit on the loaded paper. Load the correct size
paper or resize the image.
• The paper size selected does not match the paper loaded. Change the
paper, or cancel the job.

Adding Memory to the 8660 Printer
The 8660 printer is shipped with 48 MB of
factory-installed memory. However, you
can purchase and install single inline
memory modules (SIMMs) to increase the
memory to a maximum of 384 MB.
With additional memory the 8660 printer :
• processes images faster.
• simultaneously processes and prints more and/or larger jobs increasing
the possible number of prints per hour.
Guidelines for Purchasing and Installing SIMMs
You may purchase 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 MB memory modules and install
them in the 3 pairs of memory slots in your 8660 printer.

You may install any combination of SIMMs using the following guidelines:
• Although it is not necessary to use both slots in a pair, if you do, the
SIMMs must be the same size.
• The J10 and J11slots accept 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 MB modules. The other
two pairs of slots, J6—J9, accept only 4, 16, or 64 MB modules.
• The J9 slot must contain a SIMM.
• If you install only one SIMM in a pair, install the SIMM in the odd-
numbered slot; for example, J7, J9, or J11.
• The combined memory in the J6, J7, J8, and J9 slots must total 4, 8,
16, 32, 64, 128, or 256 MB.
