Introduction / Key Features

This prod uct gives your Per sonal Computer conn ectivity t o a network of VNET ™ equipped
devices s o they can be control led and monitored . The VNET™ Inter face can connec t via
USB or Serial (R S232).

VNET™ is a f ast network ing topology usin g standard Cat5 c abling to interconn ect compatibl e
devices us ing a simple cablin g scheme. The total sp an of the network m ay be at least 1 km
without repeaters. There is no maximum length for a single span within this limit.

Housed in a c onvenient, rugge d steel case, it can b e used free-s tanding or, using the ra ck­mount kit , may be racked along wi th up to two additio nal accessory pr oducts in 1U rack-sp ace.

Computer System Requirements

Minimum requirements:

*Note that th e network will op erate slightly mor e quickly when usin g RS232, so this is the
preferred method of connection.

Installing the Software

If you only wa nt to use the VNET™ In terface with th e Serial (RS232) port of y our computer,
you do not nee d to install any driv ers. If you wish to use USB, t hen you need to inst all USB
drivers for this product.

When you plu g the USB connectio n of the VNET™ Inter face into a comput er for the rst tim e,
the compu ter will say “Found new h ardware”, and will prompt yo u to install driver s for it.
Two drivers wi ll be installed: On e for the USB port it self, and one for the Vi rtual Com Port ( VCP).
Note that bo th of these driver s may report that t hey have “Not passed W indows Logo Testing”.
You should sele ct “Continue Any way”.

If the driv er software h as been supplied to yo u on a CD-ROM, place th is in your CD-ROM dri ve.
Alternat ively, download the dr ivers from your ven dor’s web site.

Windows XP Driver Installation

Please pro ceed with the fol lowing steps to ins tall the driver:

1. Conn ect a USB cable fr om your computer (or USB hub) to the USB p ort of the Inter face.

2. The connection brings up “Found New Hardware Wizard”.

3. Click “Ne xt”.

4. Selec t “Search for the b est driver for my de vice”, and click “Next”.

5. Selec t “Specify a location” and click “Next”. In the “Copy M anufacturer 's le from”,
type “D:” w here “D:” is the locat ion of your CD-ROM (or br owse to where you have co pied
the drive rs if you have download ed them from a web sit e).

6. Windows d river le searche s for the device “USB VNE T™ Interface ”.

7. Click “Nex t” to continue.

8. Windows h as nished instal ling the soft ware. Click “Finish” to comple te the rst par t
of installation.

9. Th e “Found New Hardware Wizard” appears a gain, and will comple te the installatio n for the
device “USB VN ET™ Port”.

10. Repeat step (4) to (8) to complete in stallation.

Com Port

The PodWare ap plication uses a COM p ort to communic ate with the connec ted devices.
When you use t he RS232 connecti on from your compu ter to the VNET™ Inte rface, the COM por t
will be the o ne which your comput er normally uses fo r the Serial (RS232) por t; usually COM1.
When you use US B to connect from y our computer to the VNE T™ Interfac e, the Driver sof tware
causes a “ Virtual COM Por t” (VCP) to be create d. This will appear to Po dWare as just another
COM port, a nd can be select ed using Networ k > Com Port. To nd out the COM po rt which
the VNET ™ Interface is usi ng, select Star t > Control Panel > Syst em > Hardware > Device
Manager > Por ts. Here, you shou ld see an entry in th e tree for an item ca lled “USB VNET™ Por t.
Against th is will be the COM port n umber (e.g. COM5).

If you wish to c hange this to a diere nt COM port number, righ t-click on the exis ting COM
port tr ee node, select P roperties > Por t Settings > Ad vanced. There, you wi ll see a COM port
selec tor. Do not change it to a COM por t which is already i n use.

External Power Supply

Provisio n is made to power the unit f rom an externa l VNET™ Accessor y Power Supply.
An exter nal supply is requ ired in either of the se two circums tances:

• • I f it is desired to use an R S232 (serial) connec tion to the PC

• • I f there are VNET™ n etwork cable po wered devices any where on the net work

If USB is being u sed and there are no su ch VNET™ cable po wered devices, no ex ternal supply
is requir ed and the interf ace will be powered f rom the computer ’s USB port.

Connecting a Computer

You can connec t your computer to th e VNET Interface in on e of two ways:

RS232

If your comp uter has a native Seri al (RS-232) port, just con nect this to the RS2 32 socket on the
VNET™ In terface using an R S-232 extension cab le (a straight-throug h female-to-mal e), as in
diagram 1. When u sing RS232, it is necess ary to supply DC p ower to the VNET™ Inte rface from
the compan ion Accessory Powe r Supply produc t via the 3.5 mm jack cabl e provided with th e
power supp ly. This can power either o ne or two compatib le accessories . Either the A or the B
output o n the Power supply may be us ed since these are id entical.

You can connec t your computer to th e VNET™ Interf ace via USB using a USB Type A to USB Type
B cable as in d iagram 2. It is not usuall y necessary to u se a Power Supply to power t he VNET™
Interf ace when using USB, since USB w ill supply sucie nt power for the Inter face. If there are
any Netwo rk powered device s on the network ho wever, then it will be neces sary to use the
Accessor y Power Supply

Connecting Devices

Connec t the VNET™ Link so cket on the VNET™ In terface to the VNE T™ In socket of the  rst
device you w ish to control, then th e VNET™ Link socke t of this device to the VN ET™ In socket
of the nex t device, and so on. The o rder in which the dev ices are connec ted is not import ant.
The Link so cket of the last devi ce in the ‘chain’ need not be c onnected. The In s ocket of the
VNET™ In terface is intend ed for special app lications, and wou ld not normally be con nected.
The “Ether con” network con nectors are f ully compatible wi th standard RJ 45 Ethernet patch
cables w hich may be used to make th ese connecti ons. If additional r uggedness is re quired,
we recomme nd using the Neutri k Ethercon lockin g type of connec tor.

The VNET ™ Interface and Acce ssory Power Supp ly may be used free -standing.
If you wish to mo unt them in a 19-inch rac k, then the VNET ™ accessory rac k-mount kit may be
used. To mount an A ccessory in the M ounting Kit panel:

1. Rem ove the two mountin g brackets and blan king sheet which ar e covering the aper ture
you wish to mo unt the Accessor y in, by removing the t wo nuts. (Keep these a nd the screws
and washers).

2. Remove the t wo screws fro m one side of the Accesso ry

3. Using the t wo screws remove d in 2, attach one mo unting bracket lo osely to the side of th e
Accessor y, with the “ear” toward s the front, point ing outwards.

4. Repeat 2 an d 3 for the other side. Now p ush the lid towards th e back of the unit as fa r as it
will go then a lign the bracket ear s with the front e dge of the lid.

Now tighten the screws.

5. Oer t he Accessory wi th its mounting br ackets up

to the rever se side of the Mount ing Panel, and x it inpla ce using the two set s of screws,
washers a nd nuts removed in 1.

Note that th e holes at the rear ends o f the brackets may b e used as cable tie -o points
if desired.
