CAUTION
To reduce the risk of electrical shocks, fire, etc.:
1. Do not remove screws, covers or cabinet.
2. Do not expose this appliance to rain or moisture.
CAUTION
The F button in any position does not disconnect the mains line. Disconnect the mains plug to shut the power off completely (the STANDBY lamp goes off). The MAINS plug or an appliance coupler is used as the disconnect device, the disconnect device shall remain readily operable.
• When the system is on standby, the STANDBY lamp lights red.
• When the system is turned on, the STANDBY lamp goes off. The power can be remote controlled.
CAUTION
• Do not block the ventilation openings or holes. (If the ventilation openings or holes are blocked by a newspaper or cloth, etc., the heat may not be able to get out.)
• Do not place any naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, on the apparatus.
• When discarding batteries, environmental problems must be considered and local rules or laws gov­erning the disposal of these batteries must be followed strictly.
• Do not expose this apparatus to rain, moisture, dripping or splashing and that no objects filled with liq­uids, such as vases, shall be placed on the apparatus.

How to read this manual
• This manual explains the operations assum­ing that you will use the remote control. Some buttons on the main unit are the same as those on the remote control. You can use either button in this case.
• Some diagrams in this manual are simplified or exaggerated for the purpose of explana­tion.
• You can operate some functions differently from the explanation given in this manual.
• Depending on the disc/file, you may not obtain the explained result even after follow­ing the operation in this manual.
• The following marks refer to the usable discs/files for the explained function.

Activating the buttons on the main unit
Before using the buttons on the main unit, place your hand over the front of the main unit. The but­tons, controls and indicators gradually start illumi­nating.
Using the ¢/4 and [VOL +/–] controls

Disabling the demonstration display

When you connect the power cable into the AC outlet, the dem­onstration display automatically starts in the display window. Before using this system, turn off the demonstration display.

Hold down [DEMO] on the main unit until “DEMO CLR” appears.

Inserting the batteries into the remote control

Insert the batteries into the remote control by
matching the polarity (+ and ) correctly.
R03 (UM-4)/AAA (24F) type dry-cell batteries (supplied)
• If the range or effectiveness of the remote con­trol decreases, replace both batteries.

Operating the system from the remote control

Point the remote control directly at the front of the main unit.
• Do not block the remote control sensor on the main unit.

Operating a TV manufactured by JVC using the remote control

You can use the remote control of this system to operate a TV manufactured by JVC.

Preparation

Turn the AM loop antenna to find the best position for radio reception.
NOTE
• Make sure that the antenna conductors do not touch any other terminals. This could cause poor reception.
• When using an antenna other than those sup­plied with this system, refer to the operation manuals for the antenna and converter for details of connection.
• When positioning the antennas, find the best position for reception while listening to an actual radio program (refer to “Listening to radio broad­casts” on page 15).
• You cannot receive a radio broadcast without the antenna connection.

Connecting the speakers

Connect the speakers to the main unit by connecting the colored cables to the same color terminals on the rear of the main unit.

If insulation covers the tips of the speaker cables, twist and pull off the insulation before connecting the speaker cables.
IMPORTANT
• Improper speaker cable connection reduces the stereo effect and sound quality.
• The supplied speakers are magnetically shielded, but color irregularity may occur on the TV depending on some conditions. To prevent color irregularity, set up the speakers following the instructions below.
1. Turn off the main power of the TV before
setting up the speakers.
2. Place the speakers enough distance from the
TV so that they do not cause color irregularity on the TV.
3. Wait for approximately 30 minutes before
turning on the main power of the TV again.

CAUTION
• The supplied speakers are manufactured exclu­sively for use with the supplied main unit as parts of this system. Do not connect the supplied speakers to devices other than the supplied main unit. Doing so may damage the speakers.
• Do not connect external speakers together with the supplied speakers. The change in imped­ance may damage the main unit and the speak­ers.

IMPORTANT
• Connect the main unit directly to a TV (or a mon­itor) without routing through a video cassette recorder (VCR). Otherwise picture distortion may occur during playback. (Routing the con­nection through a VCR, however, does not affect the audio quality.)

• Before connecting or disconnecting an external
device, press [VOLUME ] repeatedly to set the volume of this system to the minimum. You can also use the [VOL –] control on the main unit.
• Select the appropriate setting for “DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT” according to the connected device. Refer to page 35.
• You can output the audio signal from the [OPTICAL DIGITAL OUTPUT] terminal when “DVD/CD” is selected as the source in the dis­play window.

Selecting the video signal type

1 Turn on the main unit.
• Refer to “Turning on/off the main unit” on page 11.
To view an image on the TV screen, select the video signal type correctly according to the TV after connecting the main unit to the TV.
2 Press [SCAN MODE] repeatedly to
select the video signal type suit­able for the TV.
• Select “PAL” for a TV only compatible with a PAL interlaced video signal.
• Select “PAL PRG” for a TV equipped with a component terminal and compatible with a PAL progressive video signal.
• Select “NTSC” for a TV only compatible with an NTSC interlaced video signal.
• Select “NTSC PRG” for a TV equipped with a component terminal and compatible with an NTSC progressive video signal.
NOTE
• When “PAL PRG” or “NTSC PRG” is selected, the “PRGR.” indicator lights up in the display window.

Adjusting the volume

• You can also adjust the volume by using the [VOL +/–] control on the main unit.

Turning off the sound temporarily

Press [FADE MUTING].
• Press [FADE MUTING] again to restore the sound.

A combination of JVC sound technologies enables you to select the desired sound pattern. This func­tion is called “sound mode”.
Press [SOUND MODE] repeatedly.
• Each time you press [SOUND MODE], the dis­play changes as follows.
- “ROCK”: For acoustic sound.
- “POP”: For vocal oriented music.
- “CLASSIC”: For classic music.
- “JAZZ”: For jazz music. *
- “REGGAE”: For slow rhythm. *
- “SALSA”: For salsa music. *
- “SAMBA”: For samba music. *
- “FLAT”: Cancels the sound mode.
* Selecting these items provides a surround effect.

Customizing the equalization pattern

NOTE
• You can cancel the setting by pressing [MY SOUND].
Audible sound frequencies vary according to the individual. This function creates the appropriate equalization pattern according to your hearing preferences. This function is called “My Sound”.
When a disc/file is stopped
1 Hold down [MY SOUND].

• 5 test tones are emitted individually from the speakers.

Selecting the preset equalization pattern
Press [MY SOUND].
• Each time you press [MY SOUND], the preset equalization pattern changes.
• To deactivate the stored equalization pattern, select “OFF”.
NOTE
• This function does not work for some files.

Emphasizing both treble and bass

You can boost both high and low frequencies of the sound. This function is called “Sound Turbo II”.
Press [S.TURBO II].
• Each time you press [S.TURBO II], the setting turns on and off.
NOTE
• While the Sound Turbo II function is activated, the HBS function is automatically activated.

• The measurements are stored.
• An appropriate equalization pattern is cre­ated and shown on the TV screen.
4 Press or repeatedly to select
the preset number from 1 to 3.
• The equalization pattern is stored. The preset number, which is assigned to the equalization pattern, turns green on the TV screen.

• To measure again, press or repeatedly to select “EXIT” on the TV screen, and then press [ENTER/SET]. You can store up to 3 equalization patterns.
5 Press [ENTER/SET].

Emphasizing the bass

When the Sound Turbo II function is deactivated, you can boost only the low frequency. This function is called “HBS (hyper bass sound)”.
Press [HBS] while holding down [SHIFT].
• Each time you press [HBS], the setting turns on and off.
NOTE
• Activating the Sound Turbo II function activates the HBS function. At this time, however, the “HBS” indicator does not light up.

Sharpening the voice sound

This function allows you to easily understand dia­log recorded on the disc/file even with the volume down low. This function is useful when you are watching a movie.
Basic operations
Press [C.VOICE] while holding down [SHIFT].
• Each time you press [C.VOICE], the setting turns on and off.
NOTE
• “C.VOICE” refers to “clear voice”.

Selecting the headphone surround mode

You can listen to surround sound via headphones connected to the [PHONES] terminal.
When headphones are connected to the [PHONES] terminal
Press [3D P/HPS] while holding down [SHIFT].
• Each time you press [3D P/HPS], the setting turns on and off.
NOTE
• The [PHONES] terminal is for connecting a pair of headphones equipped with a stereo mini plug (not supplied). When headphones are con­nected, no sound is output from the speakers.
• This function does not work for a JPEG, ASF, DivX, MPEG1 or MPEG2 file.
• “HPS” refers to “headphone surround”.

Setting the clock

You can set the clock when the main unit is on or off.
1 Press [CLOCK/TIMER] repeatedly
to select the clock in the display window.
2 Press or to select the hour. 3 Press [ENTER/SET]. 4 Press or to select the minute. 5 Press [ENTER/SET].
• The clock starts from 0 seconds in the minute you set.
NOTE
• While setting the clock, you can return to the previous step by pressing [CANCEL] or you can stop the setting by pressing [CLOCK/TIMER].
• To adjust the clock, press [CLOCK/TIMER] repeatedly until the clock appears in the display window, and then press [ENTER/SET]. The fol­lowing procedure is the same as steps 2 to 5.
• Press [DISPLAY/CHARA] to display the clock when using this system. (Refer to page 21.)
• The clock gains or loses approximately 1 minute per month.
• If the power cable of the main unit is discon­nected from the AC outlet or the power is inter­rupted, the clock setting is lost. Set the clock again.

Changing the brightness of the display window

When the main unit is turned on
Press [ECO/DIMMER] repeatedly.
• Each time you press [ECO/DIMMER], the setting changes to “DIM ON”, “AUTO DIM” or “DIM OFF” in the display window.
• When “AUTO DIM” is selected and no operation is performed for approximately 5 minutes, the display window automatically becomes darker than the normal display window.

Turning off the display window

You can reduce the power consumption by turning off the display window when the main unit is off.
When the main unit is turned off
Press [ECO/DIMMER] repeatedly.
• Each time you press [ECO/DIMMER], the dis­play changes as follows.
- Selecting the normal display turns on the clock
display and activates the buttons on the main unit.
- Selecting “DISP OFF” turns off the clock dis-
play and activates the buttons on the main unit.
- Selecting “ECO ON” turns off the clock display
and deactivates the buttons on the main unit.
NOTE
• You can use the remote control in any of the above cases.
• “ECO” refers to “ecology”.

Auto standby function

If no sound is produced for 3 minutes, the main unit automatically turns off. This function is available when a loaded disc or a connected USB device is selected as the source.
Activating the auto standby function
When a loaded disc or a connected USB device is selected as the source
Press [AUTO STBY].
• The “A.STBY” lights up in the display window.
• Each time you press [AUTO STBY], the setting turns on and off.
Performance of the auto standby function
When playback of a loaded disc or a connected USB device finishes, the auto standby function starts a countdown. At this time, the “A.STBY” indi­cator starts flashing. When no operation is performed for 3 minutes, the main unit automatically turns off.
NOTE
• When you change the source to a radio broad­cast or device connected to the [AUDIO IN] ter­minal, this function temporarily deactivates.

Locking disc ejection

You can lock the disc tray to prevent the disc from being ejected.

Press 0 on the main unit while hold­ing down 7 on the main unit.
• “LOCKED” appears in the display window.
• To cancel the disc ejection lock, press 0 on the main unit while holding down 7 on the main unit again. “UNLOCKED” appears in the display win­dow.
