IMPORTANT

To get the optimum performance from your 4-channel stereo system the following points should be noted:

A magnetic cartridge must be used with a frequency response extending to 45kHz. The use of a cartridge with a Shibata stylus is recommended. The stylus pressure should be less than 3.5 g. A turntable or record player with minimum arm friction should be used. Signal cords of low capacitance between the player and demodulator are provided.

CAUTIONS

1. CD-4 Adjust

2.

CD-4 adjust is to match the cartridge and stylus with the demodulator. Once it has been done it need not be done again until the cartridge or stylus is changed. Installation of Cartridge Fig. 1 (a), (b)

If, when a cartridge is installed, it is positioned as shown in Fig. 1 (a), the tone quality will be unsatisfactory. Make sure that it is installed correctly so that it is perpendicular to the record surface. Fig. 1 (b)

B. TV Interference

When a CD-4 record player system is close to a TV, interference may occur during the playing of records. If you cannot switch off your TV when playing CD-4 records, make sure that the distance between the TV and the record player is sufficient. (Normally3 to 4 ft. is enough)

4. Record

  • (1) CD-4 records are, as all records, sensitive to dust, and the tone quality can suffer very easily. Be sure to clean your records with a cleaner before and after playing. Do not use cleaners which contain solvent and do not wash your records with water, as this will increase the noise level.
  • (2) Dust on the tip of the stylus will also increase noise. Clean the stylus with the brush provided before playing.
  • (3) Even if 2-channel stereo records are played with the CD-4 cartridge, this will not reduce the service life of the stylus or record.
  • (4) When a 2-channel record which contains an undesirable supersonic signal produces a blasting noise, set the Selector Switch to the 2CH position.

ADJUSTMENT

To get the best performance from your CD-4 records, follow these instructions.

  • Set up the system. Make sure you have correctly connected a CD-4 record
  • Check that the selector switch of the 4-channel amplifier is in the 4CH AUX
  • Switch the record player, the 4DD-5 and the amplifier on.
  • Make sure sound is coming out of each of the four speakers.

If this adjustment is made once it need not be made again until the cartridge or stylus is changed. These adjustments should be made while playing the CD-4 demodulator

  • Lower the volume of the front (CH-1, CH-3) speakers so that sound is only heard from the rear (CH-2, CH-4) speakers.
  • On the outside band of the adjustment record there is a passage of adjustment signals, first for the left channels and then for the right channels. These are a warbling note and while this passage is playing the adjustment should be made.
  • BAND 1. The adjustment of the left channel is done first. Turn the upper con-

Listening to the announcements and short passages of warbling notes on each channel after the signals on the adjustment record adjust the volume of each speaker so that they are the same level. This completely adjusts your 4-channel stereo system. Now you can play any CD-4 record and be surrounded by the rich sound field,

need further adjustment. If you are getting unstable 4-channel sound it might be because your cartridge does not match the demodulator. In this case do as follows. The 30kHz level screw is located on the bottom panel and has click positions from 0 to 10. On the inside band of the CD-4 Demodulator Adjustment Record there is a 400Hz signal. If the signal is distorted play BAND 4 on adjustment record and place 30kHz level control in 10 position. The screw should be turned counter-clockwise until a position is reached where distorted sound is not heard. Although distorted sound may still be heard, it might be acceptable in sound quality when playing CD-4 music records with the setting remaining in the 0 position.

If the sound is still unsatisfactory with CD-4 music records, the cartridge is then considered inadequate for CD-4 record reproduction.

CD-4 ADJUSTMENT

The CD-4 Adjustment Record supplied with your 4DD-5 Demodulator is the new Adjustment Record, 4DE-205. When adjusting the demodulator using this record follow the instructions given below rather than the instructions in the Instruction Book.

To obtain the maximum CD-4 performance from your CD-4 system, follow the instructions below:

Preliminaries

  • 1. Get ready the adjustment record 4DE-205 which is normally supplied with the demodulator.
  • 2. Set up the system. Connect the record player/auto-changer to the demodulator and the demodulator to a 4-channel amplifier or receiver with four speaker systems.
  • Set the controls of the 4DD-5 demodulator as follows: POWER ON Selector switch 4CH AUTO Slide switch on the rear panel OFF
  • 4. Switch the selector of the amplifier or receiver to the position corresponding to the input jacks to which the demodulator is connected. Switch the amplifier ON.
  • 5. Play any record containing CD-4 music (Quadradisc) and check that sound is coming from all four speakers.

Demodulator Adjustments

  • 1. 30kHz Carrier Level Adjustment
    • Note: Once this adjustment has been done it need not be done again unless the cartridge or stylus is replaced.

The 30kHz LEVEL control is on the bottom plate of the demodulator; it has been preadjusted in the factory prior to shipping and so further adjustment may not be necessary. However, if you are getting unstable 4-channel sound, it may be because your cartridge does not match the demodulator; in this case it will be necessary to readjust the "30kHz LEVEL" control according to the following instructions.

  • 1) Turn the "30kHz LEVEL" control fully clockwise to the "10" position.
  • 2) Play band 2 of the adjustment record 4DE-205; distorted sound will be heard.
  • 3) Gradually turn the control back towards the lower numbers until the sound becomes clean (undistorted). If the sound is undistorted intermittently turn it back one more step and leave it there.

Distorted sound may be heard when the control is turned fully counterclockwise, in its "O" position. However, the sound quality when playing normal CD-4 music records may be acceptable. If the sound when playing CD-4 music records is still unacceptable, first check the lead wires connecting the turntable and demodulator. These wires should be of the low capacitance type (the thick wires normally supplied with the demodulator).

Page 10

If the wires are of the correct type your cartridge is inadequate for playing back CD-4 records.

  • 2. CD-4 Adjustment
    • Note: These adjustments are only necessary when installing the demodulator for the first time or when the cartridge or stylus is replaced.

There are two controls marked "CD-4 ADJUST" on the rear panel of the demodulator; they should be adjusted as follows to maximize front-rear channel separation.

  • 1) With the controls of your amplifier/receiver switch off or minimize sound from the front speakers so that you can concentrate on the two back speakers.
  • 2) Play band 3 of the adjustment record 4DE-205. A warble tone will be heard from the back speakers.
  • 3) While playing this warble tone adjust the L (left) "CD-4 ADJUST" control to minimize sound from the left back speaker.
  • 4) Then adjust the R (right) "CD-4 ADJUST" control so that sound from the right back speaker is minimized.
  • 5) When this is complete turn the amplifier/receiver control to their normal positions.
  • 3. Channel Balance Adjustment

If you wish to balance the loudness of the four speakers follow these instructions. Otherwise, you may skip this section.

Note: Adjustment of the balance of the 4 speakers must be done with the amplifier/receiver controls; there are no controls on the 4DD-5 demodulator for balancing volume.

Play band 4 of the adjustment record 4DE-205. Adjust the volume or balance controls of your amplifier/receiver so that the sound is the same from each of the four speakers. When this adjustment has been done, if your amplifier/receiver has a master volume control you can adjust the overall volume with this control without disturbing the four channel balance.

Note: Some amplifiers/receivers have concentric friction coupled volume control knobs in place of individual channel level controls, balance controls or single master volume controls. In this case you must adjust each of the concentric controls individually.

4. Channel Identification

Play band 5 of the adjustment record 4DE-205. If the connections and adjustments have been made correctly throughout your CD-4 system including the speakers, chimes will be heard from each speaker in turn, in the order; left front, left back, right back, right front.

IMPORTANT

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION AND OPERATION

OF CD-4 EQUIPMENT

  • In connecting turntable to demodulator, low capacity cords must be used. (Fig. 1) These cords are normally supplied with the demodulator and are marked "L" on the white plug and "R" on the red plug. Proper four channel performance cannot be guaranteed if another type cord is used.
  • 2. The terminals of the JVC 4MD-20X cartridge are color coded according to the industry standard, however, the wiring on some turntables are not coded accordingly. Should this be the case, be sure that the blue and green terminals of the JVC 4MD-20X cartridge are connected to ground (negative) wires. (Fig. 2)
  • Cartridges must be mounted perpendicular. Some tone arms have a plug in head shell and it is recommended that the cartridge be checked and adjusted for alignment in this regard. (Fig. 3)
  • 4. Tracking force must be 1.5 gr. to 2.0 gr.
  • 5. More frequent cleaning of both stylus and record are required than for ordinary stereo. Do not use any liquid cleaning agent including pure water. A wet record or the residue of a liquid cleaning agent will result in noise as will an unclean record or stylus. "Parostatik" record preener is a recommended cleaner for CD-4 records.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON CONNECTING CORDS

If supplied cords are of insufficient length, an additional low capacity cord set may be joined as an extension using a male to male connector (available at audio stores). Low capacity cord sets are available at JVC Parts Centers.

Cords used for demodulator output are not subject to the aforementioned restrictions.

A plug adaptor for Empire turntables is available from JVC Parts Centers for use with the standard low capacity cord set.
