Proper use
For your safety
J
The machine is designed and intended for private domestic use. It should only be used for coffee preparation and to heat water. Use for any other purpose will be deemed improper. JURA Elektroapparate AG cannot accept any responsibility for the consequences of improper use.
Before using the machine, read these instructions for use thoroughly and completely and comply with the instructions they contain. A warranty service is not applicable for damage or defects caused by non-compliance with the instructions for use. Keep these instructions for use close to the machine and pass them on to the next user.
Please carefully read and observe the important safety information set out below.
To avoid danger of potentially fatal electric shock:
Never use a machine which is damaged or has
U
a defective mains cable. In the event of signs of damage, for example if
U
there is a smell of burning, unplug the machine immediately from the power supply and contact JURA service. If the mains cable of this machine is damaged,
U
it must be repaired either directly by JURA or by an authorised JURA service centre. Make sure that the D4 and the mains cable are
U
not located close to hot surfaces. Be careful to ensure that the mains cable is not
U
trapped and does not rub against sharp edges.
6
Page 7
Important information
Never open and repair the machine yourself.
U
Do not modify the machine in any way that is not described in these instructions for use. The machine contains live parts. If opened, there is a danger of potentially fatal injury. Repairs may only be carried out by authorised JURA service centres, using original spare parts and accessories. To completely and safely disconnect the
U
machine from the power supply, first switch off the D4 using the On/Off button Q. Only then should you remove the mains plug from the power socket.
There is a risk of scalds or burns on the spouts or the hot-water nozzle:
Place the machine out of the reach of children.
U
Do not touch any hot parts. Use the handles
U
provided. Be careful to ensure that the hot-water nozzle
U
is correctly installed and clean. If incorrectly fitted or if it becomes blocked, the hot-water nozzle might come off.
A defective machine is not safe and could cause injury or fire. To avoid damage and any associated risk of injury or fire:
Never allow the mains cable to loosely hang
U
down. The mains cable could pose a tripping hazard or become damaged. Protect the D4 from environmental influences
U
such as rain, frost and direct sunlight. Do not immerse the D4, mains cable or con-
U
nections in water.
7
Page 8
Important information
Do not put the D4 or any individual parts in
U
the dishwasher. Do not use alkaline cleaning agents; only use
U
a soft cloth and mild cleaning agents. Before cleaning, switch the D4 off with the
U
On/Off button Q. Always wipe the D4 with a damp cloth rather than a wet one, and protect it from prolonged exposure to water splash. Only connect the machine to the mains
U
voltage in accordance with the information on the rating plate. The rating plate is located on the underside of your D4. Further technical data is provided in these instructions for use (see Chapter 9 ‘Technical data’). Connect the D4 directly to a domestic power
U
socket. Using multi-socket adapters or extension cords may cause overheating. Please only use original JURA maintenance
U
products. Use of products that are not explicitly recommended by JURA could damage the machine. Do not use any coffee beans treated with
U
additives or caramelised coffee beans. Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water.
U
Switch the machine off with the On/Off but-
U
ton Q if you are going to be absent for a longer period of time and remove the mains plug from the power socket. Children may not clean or service the machine
U
unless supervised by a responsible person. Do not allow children to play with the machine.
U
Keep children under the age of 8 away from
U
the machine, or supervise them constantly.
8
Page 9

CAUTION
Visit us on the Internet. You can download short operating instructions for your machine from the JURA website (www.jura.com). You
will also find interesting and up-to-date information on your D4 and on every aspect of coffee.
If you need assistance with using your machine, you can find this at www.jura.com/service.
When setting up your D4, please note the following:
Place the D4 on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to
U
water.
Choose a spot for your D4 which protects the machine against
U
overheating. Ensure that the ventilation slots are not covered.
The bean container has an aroma preservation cover. This will ensure that your coffee beans retain their aroma for longer.
Coffee beans which have been treated with additives (e.g. sugar), ground coffee or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.
T Only use roasted, untreated coffee beans to fill the bean con-
tainer.

2 Preparation
2 Preparation
Basic information about preparing drinks:
Before and during the grinding operation you can select the
U
coffee strength for the speciality coffees espresso < and
coffee >: ‘mild’ (;), ‘normal’ (:), ‘strong’ (_).
Double product: To prepare two speciality coffees, touch the
U
Double Product symbol ‘2x’ before preparation. Then choose
between espresso < and coffee >. When you prepare
double products, two brewing operations take place one after
the other.
While a speciality coffee is being prepared, you can stop pre-
U
paration at any time. Simply touch the symbol for the speci-
ality coffee in question.
Coffee tastes best served hot. A cold porcelain cup cools the beverage – and impairs the taste. We therefore recommend prewarming the cups. The full coffee aroma can develop only in prewarmed cups. You can purchase a JURA cup warmer from your specialised dealer.
Espresso and coffee
Two espressi and two coffees
Espresso and coffee are both prepared following this model.
Example:Proceed as follows to prepare one coffee. Precondition:Your D4 is ready for use.

If you adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is not operating, the grinder adjustment switch could be damaged.
T Only adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is run-
ning.
Page 15
2 Preparation
The consistency of grind is correct if the coffee flows regularly from the coffee spout. In addition a fine, thick crema forms.
Example:Proceed as follows to change the consistency of grind during the preparation of an espresso.
T Place a cup under the coffee spout.
T Open the bean container cover and remove the aroma pre-
servation cover.

Basic information about ground coffee:
Never add more than two level measuring spoons of ground
U
coffee.
Use ground coffee which is not ground too finely. Very fine
U
coffee can block up the system so that the coffee only comes
out in drips.
If you did not fill the machine with enough ground coffee, the
U
D4 stops the operation and is then ready for use again.
The desired speciality coffee must be prepared within approx-
U
imately one minute after filling with the ground coffee. Oth-
erwise the D4 stops the operation and is once more ready for
use.
All speciality coffees with ground coffee are always prepared
U
following the same model.

Descaling the water tank
Coffee beans may be covered with a slight oil film which remains on the walls of the bean container. These traces may negatively affect the coffee result. For this reason clean the bean container from time to time.
T Press the On/Off button Q to switch the D4 off. T Open the bean container cover and remove the aroma pre-
servation cover.
T Clean the bean container with a soft, dry cloth. T Fill the bean container with coffee beans and close the
aroma preservation cover. T Close the bean container cover.
Limescale deposits may form in the water tank. To ensure correct function of the machine, descale the water tank from time to time.
T Remove the water tank. T If you use a CLARIS Smart filter cartridge, remove this. T Completely fill the water tank and dissolve 3 JURA descaling
tablets in it. T Leave the water tank with the descaling solution for several
hours (e.g. overnight).
T Empty the water tank and rinse it thoroughly. T If you use a CLARIS Smart filter cartridge, insert this again. T Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the
tank.
