Before You Begin
Before You Begin
 is section provides you with safety information, technical support information, and sources for additional product information.
Safety Summary
Your safety is extremely important. Read and follow all warnings and cautions in this document before handling and operating Intermec equipment. You can be seriously injured, and equipment and data can be damaged if you do not follow the safety warnings and cautions.
Do not repair or adjust alone
Do not repair or adjust energized equipment alone under any circumstances. Someone capable of providing fi rst aid must always be present for your safety.
First aid
Always obtain fi rst aid or medical attention immediately after an injury. Never neglect an injury, no matter how slight it seems.
Resuscitation
Begin resuscitation immediately if someone is injured and stops breathing. Any delay could result in death. To work on or near high voltage, you should be familiar with approved industrial fi rst aid methods.
Energized equipment
Never work on energized equipment unless authorized by a responsible authority. Energized electrical equipment is dangerous. Electrical shock from energized equipment can cause death. If you must perform authorized emergency work on energized equipment, be sure that you comply strictly with approved safety regulations.
Battery pack disposal
 e battery pack contains nickel/metal hydride (NiMH) cells which are potentially dangerous to the environment. Check and follow local regulations for disposal of nickel/metal hydride batteries. Do not disassemble the battery pack and only recharge it with approved equipment from Intermec.

Safety Icons
 is section explains how to identify and understand dangers, warnings, cautions, and notes that are in this document. You may also see icons that tell you when to follow ESD procedures.
A warning alerts you of an operating procedure, practice, condition, or statement that must be strictly observed to avoid death or serious injury to the persons working on the equipment.
A caution alerts you to an operating procedure, practice, condition, or statement that must be strictly observed to prevent equipment damage or destruction, or corruption or loss of data.
 is icon appears at the beginning of any procedure in this manual that could cause you to touch components (such as printed circuit boards) that are susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). When you see this icon, you must follow standard ESD guidelines to avoid damaging the equipment you are servicing.
Note: Notes either provide extra information about a topic or
contain special instructions for handling a particular condition or set of circumstances.

Chapter 1 — Installation
Description
 e EasyCoder PC4/PC41 printer can be fi tted with a battery unit that makes it independent of a 115/230 VAC external power supply.  e battery unit allows the printer to be operated approximately 8 hours and/or print 1200 inches of labels before the battery pack must be recharged, which takes ap prox i mate ly 4 hours at room temperature. Charging at lower environmental temperature could prolong the charging time.
 e battery unit is either factory-fi tted to the bottom of the printer and connected to its rear plate using a short cable, or added as an accessory. If your battery unit is factory-fi tted, skip the section on Installing the Battery Unit.
 e printer’s power supply adapter (PSA) is either used to drive the battery unit or to drive the printer directly.  e PSA is powered by 100 to 240 VAC, 50 to 60 Hz from a common wall socket.
 e battery pack inside the battery unit will be charged when the power switch of the battery unit is on.
To print, switch on the power to the printer fi rst, then switch on the battery unit.
With a battery unit, there are several ways to supply the printer with power:
1 Directly from a wall socket via the PSA.
2 From a wall socket via the battery unit which allows the internal bat-
tery pack to be automatically charged.
3 From the battery unit without any connection to a wall socket.
If you have a spare battery pack, you can simply pull out the empty battery pack from the battery unit and replace it with a charged battery pack. Always switch off the power to the battery unit before changing the battery pack.
Furthermore, with a charger and a spare battery pack, you can charge an empty battery pack while running the printer from the charged battery inserted in the battery unit.  e charger uses the same type of PSA as the printer/battery unit.
To obtain full capacity in a new battery pack, it should be charged and discharged at least three times.

Chapter 1 — Installation
Installing the Battery Unit
1 Lower the printer
on the battery unit. Make sure the four screws on the battery unit go in to the corresponding holes in the printer.
2 Push the printer backwards,
keeping the battery unit still. Make sure the printer is aligned with the battery unit, as shown in the illustration below.

3 Tip the printer backwards.
Using a Philips (cross-tip) screwdriver, tighten the screw located in the opening shown to the right.
4 Connect the power
cord from the battery unit to the printer. Turn the printer on fi rst, then switch the battery unit on.

Operation
 is chapter explains how to operate the printer using the battery unit and how to replace and charge the detachable battery pack.

Chapter 2 — Operation
Operating on Battery Power
1 Operate the printer normally until the battery power indicator
switches from green (power on) to amber (power low warning). You should be able to use the printer for an average of eight (8) hours without battery recharge.
When the battery power switches from green to amber, you will still be able to print several labels. When the indicator switches to red, the battery unit is automatically switched off to prevent battery damage. To continue printing, you must either insert a charged battery or connect the power supply adapter to the battery unit.
2 Switch the battery unit off , when it is not connected to the printer, or
when not printing for a long time, to avoid unnecessary draining of the battery pack.
3 e battery pack is charged by connecting the battery unit to the
printer's power supply adapter.  e charging time is approximately four hours.  e battery unit must be ON to charge.
4 e battery pack can also be charged while connected to an active
printer if the battery pack is connected to the power supply adapter and the battery pack switch is ON.

To charge an empty battery pack in the charger, proceed as follows:
1 Plug in the power supply adapter.
2 Insert the empty battery pack.
3 Switch on the power using the on/off switch at the rear of the charger.
4 During charging, the charging indictor on the charger unit is amber.
5 When the charging indicator turns green, the battery is fully
recharged. Charging time at room temperature is approximately 2 hours.
6 Possible charging faults are indicated by the charging indicator switch-
ing to blinking amber.
 e battery pack contains nickel/metal hydride (NiMH) cells which are potentially dangerous to the environment. Check and follow local regulations for disposal of nickel/ metal hydride batteries. Do not disassemble the battery pack and only recharge it with approved equipment from Intermec.
