Getting Started

Welcome

Welcome to InterServe WebScale! InterServe WebScale is an integrated software set that enhances the availability and scalability of Internet server applications such as Web servers, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers, and other mission-critical Web applications. WebScale provides scaleable, fault-tolerant clustering to two or more servers. Intergraph Computer
Systems’ servers include InterServe Web, InterServe Firewall, and InterServe 80/800/8000 series. The WebScale software set includes:
u
Intergraph Computer Systems’ WebScale software, based in part on technology from Valence Research, Inc.
u
Intergraph Computer Systems’ InterSite WebScale Management Console, an interactive interface for managing clusters and nodes.
Use this Quick-Start Guide for instructions about installing and configuring your WebScale software. Along with this document, you received the following documentation:
u
The WebScale User’s Guide and WebScale online Help, delivered online with the WebScale software.
1
u
Online Help for the InterSite WebScale Management Console, delivered with the InterSite WebScale software.
NOTE If you purchased a new InterServe server with your WebScale software, use the
Setup
and other documentation provided with your system to unpack, set up, and complete system configuration on your server. Then return to this document for instructions about installing and configuring your WebScale software.

Getting a License Key

Before you can install and run the WebScale software, you must get a license key to enable the software. The key identifies the machine on which the software can run, as well as the expiration date of demonstration software.
To get a license key, complete the following form and fax it to Intergraph Computer Systems, Software Delivery Customer Services, at 1-888-797-5435 or call Intergraph at 1800-760-5666. If you are located outside the United States, please contact your local Intergraph Computer Systems office. When the form is received, a license key will be generated and returned to you by the response method you specify (email, fax, or telephone).

Installing WebScale Software

The following instructions provide information for installing WebScale software on a system with single or dual installed network interface cards (NICs).
3
A WebScale server configured with a single installed NIC is the most common configuration and will provide good overall performance for most types of cluster configurations and network traffic patterns. However, if you have a large amount of dedicated traffic, you may improve performance by using a second NIC to segregate the cluster traffic from the dedicated traffic. For example, you may have high-volume replication between the WebScale cluster servers for which there may be no low usage hours in which to schedule the replication, or you may have routine transfers of large amounts of data to and from your servers.

Gathering Pre-Installation Information

Determine the following information before setting up WebScale. Record the information in the space provided:
Primary Internet Protocol (IP) Address: The cluster-wide virtual IP address to be used for all hosts in the cluster.
Subnet mask: The subnet mask for the cluster’s primary IP address.
Full Internet Name: The cluster’s full Internet name (for example, cluster.mycompany.com) which resolves to the Primary IP Address. Refer to your license key form for this information, and ensure that the Internet name you specify matches the name listed on the license key form.
