1 Introduction

Hardware

Intense 3D 100 is a half-length Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) board that requires one open PCI expansion slot in your computer.
Based on the Rendition Vérité V1000 graphics engine, Intense 3D 100 offers true 3D graphics performance. Intense 3D 100’s 64-bit graphics chip technology and VGA/SVGA support assure incredible acceleration for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 products. Windows applications and existing DOS games run faster on Intense 3D 100.
Intense 3D 100 hardware has the following features:

Software

Intense 3D 100 software consists of a device driver delivered on a diskette. This driver is for installation on systems running the Windows 95 or the Windows NT 4.0 operating system.
Several games are delivered in the Intense 3D 100 package. For installation and configuration instructions, see the associated file for the game you want to install.

2 Preparing for Installation

Follow these instructions to prepare your computer for Intense 3D 100.

Ensure Your Computer Is Ready

Ensure that your IBM PC-compatible computer has the following:
u
A Pentium processor.
u
8 MB or more of system memory.
u
A CD-ROM drive.
u
The Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 operating system installed and running.
u
An open PCI expansion slot for the Intense 3D 100 board.

T ake A ntist atic Precautions

Static electricity can damage the components inside a computer or on a printed circuit board. To keep the possibility of electrostatic discharge to a minimum, do the following:

Turn off power to the computer.
u
Touch the metal chassis of the computer to drain off any static electricity before touching a board.
u
Wear a properly connected grounding wrist strap when handling a board or working in a computer.
u
Do not wear wool or polyester clothing.
u
Work in an area with a relative humidity of at least 50 percent.
u
Do not remove a board from its antistatic bag until you are ready to install it.
u
Handle a board as little as possible and by the edges only.

Collect Materials and Tools

Collect the following materials and tools:
u
The Intense 3D 100 board.
u
The distribution diskette labeled I3D100, containing the Intense 3D 100 driver.
u
A flat-head or Phillips screwdriver, as required to prepare your
computer’s PCI expansion slot for installation of an option board.
u
The monitor cable supplied with your computer or monitor.
u
Your computer’s documentation.
Retain all packaging materials. You must return your Intense 3D 100 hardware in its original packaging to obtain warranty service.

Make a Copy of the Distribution Diskette

Make a copy of the distribution diskette containing the Intense 3D 100 driver as a precaution. Should anything happen to the copy, you will still have the original diskette.
See your computer’s documentation to make a backup copy of the diskette. Store the original distribution diskette in a safe place, and use the backup diskette during the installation.

Read the Instructions

Before attempting to install Intense 3D 100, read Chapter 3, “Installing the Hardware,” and Chapter 4, “Installing the Software” completely.
Review your computer’s documentation for instructions on opening and closing the computer, identifying PCI expansion slots, disabling on­board graphics acceleration, and adding an expansion board.
Review the Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 documentation and online Help for instructions on installing drivers and software application programs.

3 Installing the Hardware

Refer to your computer’s documentation for instructions on opening and closing the computer, identifying PCI expansion slots, disabling on­board graphics acceleration, and adding an expansion board.

Start the Installation

To start the installation:
1. Turn off power to the computer and to the monitor.
2. Open the computer to gain access to the PCI expansion slots.
3. If your computer has an installed graphics accelerator, remove it. If your computer has a graphics accelerator integrated onto the system board, disable it.
4. Select the PCI expansion slot into which you will install the Intense 3D 100 board.
NOTE The selected slot must support PCI bus mastering. In most
computers, all PCI slots have this ability.

5. Remove the slot cover from the selected PCI slot. Retain the screws from the slot cover; you will use them to secure the Intense 3D 100 board to the computer’s chassis.

Install the Board

To install an Intense 3D 100 board:
1. Align the board with the PCI expansion slot, ensuring that the gold­fingered connectors on the board’s edge are aligned properly with the slot connector.
2. Push the board into the slot firmly and evenly until it is fully seated in the slot connector.
3. Visually inspect the connection. If it does not appear to be correct, remove and reinstall the board.
4. Use the screws you removed previously to secure the board to the computer’s chassis.

Finish the Installation

To finish the installation:
1. Close the computer.
2. Connect the computer monitor’s video cable to the video output
port on the Intense 3D 100 board.
3. Install the Intense 3D 100 driver as instructed in Chapter 4, “Installing the Software.”

4 Installing the Software

Refer to the Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 documentation and online Help for more information on installing drivers and software
application programs, and configuring your computer’s video display.

Installing the Windows 95 Driver

To install the Windows 95 driver:
1. Turn on power to the computer and to the monitor, and allow the computer to boot into Windows 95. Windows 95 detects that you have added new hardware (the Intense 3D 100 board).
2. When prompted to specify how you will install the driver, select Driver from disk provided by manufacturer.
3. Insert the diskette containing the Intense 3D 100 driver into the floppy disk drive.
4. In the Install from Disk dialog, select OK.
5. Follow the prompts to install the driver.

6. When prompted to restart the computer, select Yes.
If you have to reinstall the Windows 95 driver:
1. Log on to Windows 95.
2. Insert the diskette containing the Intense 3D 100 driver into the floppy disk drive.
3. Right-click the Windows 95 desktop. The Display Properties dialog displays.
4. Select Settings (tab); then select Change Display Type.
5. In the Change Display Type dialog, select the Change button beside the Adapter Type box.
6. In the Select Device dialog, select Have Disk.
7. Make sure A:\ displays in the Copy from manufacturer’s files box, and then select OK.
8. Select Rendition Verite 1000 PCI, and then select OK.
9. After the files have been installed, select Close.
10. Continue to select Close until prompted to restart the computer, and then select Yes.

Installing the Windows NT 4.0 Driver

To install the Windows NT driver:
1. Insert the diskette containing the Intense 3D 100 driver into the
computer’s floppy disk drive.
2. Log on to Windows NT using an account that has administrative privileges.
3. In the Control Panel, double-click Display to view the Display Properties dialog.
4. Click Settings (tab), then click Display Type. The Display Type dialog display.
5. Click Change. The Change Display dialog displays.
6. Click Have Disk. Make sure A:\ displays in the Copy manufacturer’s files from box and click OK.
7. Click OK on the Change Display dialog. The dialog will list Intergraph Intense 3D 100 as the driver type.
8. Click Yes when prompted to install the files. After the files install, a message states that the driver files installed successfully.
9. Click OK until you are prompted to restart the computer.
10. Remove the diskette from the floppy disk drive and restart the computer.

Configuring the Video Display

Refer to the Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 documentation and online Help for information on configuring your computer’s video display settings, such as screen resolution and color depth.
Installing and Running Games (Windows
95)
To install and run the Rendition Ready version of Quake:
1. From the Quake CD, install the MS-DOS version of Quake.

2. From the Intense 3D 100 Games CD, copy
SPD3D.UC from the QUAKE directory to the directory on your
VQUAKE.EXE and
computer containing the MS-DOS version of Quake.
For example, on a computer where the CD-ROM drive is drive E
and MS-DOS Quake was installed in \
QUAKE_SW on drive D:
copy e:\vquake\vquake.exe d:\quake_sw\vquake.exe copy e:\vquake\spd3d.uc d:\quake_sw\spd3d.uc
3. Run
VQUAKE.EXE will provide higher resolutions at frame rates comparable
VQUAKE.EXE.
to those in standard Quake, depending on your computer’s performance. Experiment with these higher resolutions to reach an acceptable level of detail and frame rate.

README file or online Help file delivered with the game you
want to install for installation and configuration instructions.

5 TechTips

These TechTips can help you make the most of Intense 3D 100. They offer solutions for problems you may encounter.
NOTE For information on access to Intergraph’s Internet sites and
contacting Intergraph for help, see Chapter 6, “Getting Help.”

Installation and Configuration

If you get no video output (including boot messages) after installing Intense 3D 100 and restarting the computer, there may be a hardware problem. Try the following:
1. Replace Intense 3D 100 with the previous graphics accelerator, or enable the on-board graphics accelerator.
2. Return the computer’s basic input/output system (BIOS) to its
default settings.
3. Disable video (VGA) shadowing, video caching, and VGA palette snooping settings in the BIOS.

4. Reinstall the Intense 3D 100 board as instructed in Chapter 3, “Installing the Hardware.”
If there is still no video output, install Intense 3D 100 in a different PCI expansion slot, and then restart the computer.
If there is still no video output, there may be a hardware problem with the Intense 3D 100 board. Contact Intergraph for help.
If you have to resolve a hardware or Windows 95 resource conflict, try the following:
1. Reboot the computer into Windows 95 Safe Mode.
2. Select My Computer, Control Panel, System, Device Manager (tab), and Display Adapters.
3. Select and remove each listed video adapter card.
4. Reboot the computer into Windows 95.
5. Install and configure the Intense 3D 100 driver as instructed in Chapter 4, “Installing the Software.”

If the resource conflict still exists, try the following:
1. Shut down and turn off power to the computer.
2. Remove any non-essential PCI, Industry Standard Architecture (ISA), Extended ISA (EISA), and Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) adapter cards from the computer.
3. Turn on power to the computer and reboot it into Windows 95.
4. Install and configure the Intense 3D 100 driver as instructed in
Chapter 4, “Installing the Software.”
5. Shut down and turn off power to the computer.
6. Reinstall one of previously removed adapter cards.
7. Turn on power to the computer and reboot it into Windows 95.
8. If the card causes a resource conflict, reboot the computer into Windows 95 Safe Mode and continue.
If the card does not cause a resource conflict, the Intense 3D 100
board should work properly. If you have other adapter cards to reinstall, go back to step 5.
9. Select My Computer, Control Panel, System, Device Manager (tab), Device Causing Conflict, and Remove.
10. Reboot the computer into Windows 95.
11. If Windows 95 does not detect the adapter card, select My Computer, Control Panel, and Add New Hardware. Follow the prompts to reinstall the Windows 95 driver for the adapter card.
12. If you have other adapter cards to reinstall, go back to step 5.
If Windows 95 does not start (the MS-DOS command prompt displays), or if the display is corrupted, when booting into Windows 95 Safe Mode or another VGA mode, try the following:
u
Replace Intense 3D 100 with the previous graphics accelerator, or enable the on-board graphics accelerator.
u
Install the patch contained in the VGAFIX.ZIP file available from Intergraph’s Internet sites. The
README.TXT file in that archive
describes how to install the patch.
If the computer only boots into standard VGA resolution (640 x 480, 16 colors), reinstall and configure the Intense 3D 100 driver as instructed in Chapter 4, “Installing the Software.”
If the Intense 3D 100 driver does not run, or no Vérité tab shows in the Display Properties dialog, boot the computer into Windows 95 Safe Mode. Then reinstall and configure the Intense 3D 100 driver as instructed in Chapter 4, “Installing the Software.”
If you cannot set the desired video display resolution, check the Settings tab in the Display dialog to make sure the computer’s monitor selection is correct.

General Operation

If the computer’s VGA performance is less than desirable, note that
Intense 3D 100’s VGA compatibility does not assure outstanding VGA performance. However, Intense 3D 100 provides incredible performance in SVGA (VESA) mode. If your MS-DOS game can run in SVGA (VESA) mode, configure it to do so to achieve maximum performance with Intense 3D 100.

Gaming

The Setup programs for HellBender and Monster Truck overwrite the Intense 3D 100 driver on the computer with incorrect versions.
After installing one of these games, reinstall the Intense 3D 100 driver as instructed in Chapter 4, “Installing the Software.” To verify the installation of the Intense 3D 100 driver:

1. In the Control Panel, select Computer, Device Manager, and Display Adapters.
2. Highlight Rendition Vérité 1000 PCI.
3. Select Properties, and then Driver (tab). The File Details should show Provider: Rendition.
When running Indy Car II using
black screen with a narrow bar of “pixel dust” at the top of the screen, try the following:
1. Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and re-run or use
INDYSAFE.BAT.
2. If the problem occurs in MS-DOS mode, install the latest Intense 3D 100 driver available from Intergraph’s Internet sites.
3. Run
INDYCAR.EXE from Windows 95 DOS. Refer to the Indy Car
II
README file on the Intense 3D 100 Games CD-ROM for more
information.
INDYFAST.BAT, if you see only a
INDYFAST.BAT,

4. If your computer has a Cyrix processor, and INDYFAST.BAT does
not run and causes the narrow bar of “pixel dust” at the top of the screen, contact Papyrus about the problem. Visit the Papyrus World Wide Web site at http://papy.com.
When running F-22 Flight Simulator, if problems occur with functions in the F-22 fighter, install the patch contained in the
F22.ZIP
file available from Intergraph’s Internet sites. When running HellBender, go into Options to turn on hardware
acceleration. You may have to increase the video display resolution to enable hardware acceleration.

If your computer has a modem, log on to the Intergraph Bulletin Board Service (IBB). Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the IBBS is an electronic forum for Intergraph customers to exchange information with Intergraph’s technical and marketing staff, and with other Intergraph customers. To connect to the IBBS:
1. Set your system’s communications protocol for eight (8) data bits, no parity, one (1) stop bit, and any baud rate up to 14,400.
