Failure to use an appropriate power supply and/or not connecting the 12-V (2 x 4 pin)
power connector to the workstation board may result in damage to the board or the
system may not function properly.
The Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP supports an Intel processor in the LGA1366
package. The board does not include processors, so you must purchase them
separately. The processor connects to the Board through the LGA1366 socket.

To be fully compliant with all applicable Intel® SDRAM memory specifications, you
must populate the board with DIMMs that support the Serial Presence Detect (SPD)
data structure. If your memory modules do not support SPD, you will see a
notification to this effect on the screen at power up. The BIOS will attempt to

Board Features
USB 2.0 Support
The Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP supports up to 12 USB 2.0 ports (eight ports
routed to back panel connectors and four ports routed to two onboard headers)
through the ICH10R. USB 2.0 ports are backwards-compatible with USB 1.1 devices.
USB 1.1 devices will function normally at USB 1.1 speeds.
USB 2.0 support requires both an operating system and drivers that fully support
USB 2.0 transfer rates. Disabling Hi-Speed USB in the BIOS reverts all USB 2.0 ports
to USB 1.1 operation. This may be required to accommodate operating systems that
do not support USB 2.0.
Serial ATA
Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP supports six onboard Serial ATA channels (3.0
Gb/s) through ICH10R.
The six onboard Serial ATA channels provided by ICH10R support the following RAID
(Redundant Array of Independent Drives) levels:
RAID 0 - Data striping
RAID 1 - Data mirroring
RAID 0+1 (or RAID 10) - Data striping and data mirroring
RAID 5 - Distributed parity

BIOS
The BIOS provides the Power-On Self-Test (POST), BIOS Setup program, and PCI/PCI
Express* and IDE auto-configuration utilities. The BIOS is stored in the Serial
Peripheral Interface (SPI) Flash device.
You can update the BIOS by following the instructions on page 58 in Chapter 3.
Serial ATA and IDE Auto Configuration
If you install a Serial ATA or IDE device (such as a hard drive) in your computer, the
auto-configuration utility in the BIOS automatically detects and configures the device
for your computer. You do not need to run the BIOS Setup program after installing a
Serial ATA or IDE device. You can override the auto-configuration options by specifying
manual configuration in the BIOS Setup program.
PCI and PCI Express* Auto Configuration
If you install a PCI/PCI Express* add-in card in your computer, the PCI/PCI Express*
auto-configuration utility in the BIOS automatically detects and configures the
resources (IRQs, DMA channels, and I/O space) for that add-in card. You do not need
to run the BIOS Setup program after you install a PCI/PCI Express* add-in card.
Security Passwords
The BIOS includes security features that restrict whether the BIOS Setup program can
be accessed and who can boot the computer. You can set a supervisor password and a
user password for the BIOS Setup and for booting the computer, with the following
restrictions:
The supervisor password gives unrestricted access to view and change all Setup
options. If only the supervisor password is set, pressing <Enter> at the password
prompt of Setup gives the user restricted access to Setup.
If both the supervisor and user passwords are set, you must enter either the
supervisor password or the user password to access Setup. Setup options are then
available for viewing and changing depending on whether the supervisor or user
password was entered.
Setting a user password restricts who can boot the computer. Before the computer
boots, the password prompt displays. If only the supervisor password is set, the
computer boots without asking for a password. If both passwords are set, you can
enter either password to boot the computer.

Hardware Management
The hardware management features of Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP enable the
board to be compatible with the Wired for Management (WfM) specification. The board
has several hardware management features including the following:

Intel Precision Cooling Technology automatically adjusts processor fan speed based on
the processor temperature and adjusts chassis fan speeds based on the internal
system temperature.
Chassis Intrusion
The board supports a chassis security feature that detects if the chassis cover is
removed. The security feature uses a mechanical switch on the chassis that can be
connected to the chassis intrusion header on the Board. See Figure 23 for the location
of the chassis intrusion header.
Power Management
Power management is implemented at several levels, including software support
through the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and the following
hardware support:

ENERGY STAR capable
Software Support
ACPI
ACPI gives the operating system direct control over the power management and Plug
and Play functions of a computer. The use of ACPI with the Board requires an
operating system that provides full ACPI support.
Hardware Support
Power Connectors
ATX12V-compliant power supplies can turn off the computer power through system
control. When an ACPI-enabled computer receives the correct command, the power
supply removes all non-standby voltages.
When resuming from an AC power failure, the computer returns to the power state it
was in before power was interrupted (either on or off). You can set the computer’s
response by using the Last Power State feature in the BIOS Setup program’s Boot
menu.
The Board has three power connectors. See Figure 26 on page 50 for the location of
the power connectors.
Fan Headers
The function/operation of the fans is as follows:
The fans are on when the computer is in the ACPI S0 state.
The fans are off when the computer is in the ACPI S3, S4, or S5 state.
Each fan header is wired to a tachometer input of the hardware monitoring and
control device.
All fan headers support closed-loop fan control that can adjust the fan speed or
switch the fan on or off as needed.
All fan headers have a +12 V DC connection.
The Board has a 4-pin processor fan header, one 4-pin and two 3-pin chassis fan
headers, and one 3-pin IOH fan header.
LAN Wake Capabilities
CAUTION
For LAN wake capabilities, the 5-V standby line for the power supply must be capable
of delivering adequate +5 V standby current. Failure to provide adequate standby
current when using this feature can damage the power supply.

Board Features
LAN wakeup capabilities enable remote wake-up of the computer through a network.
The LAN subsystem monitors network traffic and upon detecting a Magic Packet*
frame, it asserts a wake-up signal that powers up the computer.
Instantly Available PC Technology
CAUTIONS
For Instantly Available PC technology, the 5-V standby line for the power supply must
be capable of delivering adequate +5 V standby current. Failure to provide adequate
standby current when using this feature can damage the power supply and/or affect
ACPI S3 sleep state functionality.
Power supplies used with this Board must be able to provide enough standby current
to support the standard Instantly Available (ACPI S3 sleep state) configuration. If the
standby current necessary to support multiple wake events from the PCI and/or USB
buses exceeds the power supply’s capacity, the Board may lose register settings
stored in memory.
Instantly Available PC technology enables the board to enter the ACPI S3 (Suspend-toRAM) sleep state. While in the S3 sleep state, the computer appears to be turned-off.
If the computer has a dual-colored power LED on the front panel, the sleep state is
indicated by the LED turning amber. When signaled by a wake-up device or event, the
computer quickly returns to its last known awake state.
The Workstation Board supports the PCI Bus Power Management Interface Specification. Add-in cards that support this specification can participate in power
management and can be used to wake the computer.
+5 V Standby Power Indicator
CAUTION
If the AC power was switched off and the standby power indicator is still lit, disconnect
the power cord before installing or removing any devices connected to the board.
Failure to do so could damage the board and any attached devices.
The Workstation Board’s standby power indicator, shown in Figure 3, is lit when there
is standby power still present on the board even when the computer appears to be off.
For example, when this LED is lit, standby power is still present at the memory module
sockets and the PCI bus connectors.

Wake from USB
NOTE
Wake from USB requires the use of a USB peripheral that supports Wake from USB
and an operating system that supports Wake from USB.
USB bus activity wakes the computer from an ACPI S3 state.
PME# Signal Wake-up Support
When the PME# signal on the PCI bus is asserted, the computer wakes from an
ACPI S1, S3, S4, or S5 state.

When the WAKE# signal on the PCI Express bus is asserted, the computer wakes from
an ACPI S1, S3, S4, or S5 state.
ENERGY STAR* Capable
In 2007, the US Department of Energy and the US Environmental Protection Agency
revised the ENERGY STAR requirements. Intel worked directly with these two
governmental agencies to define the new requirements. Currently Intel boards are
capable of meeting the new ENERGY STAR requirements depending upon system
configuration.

The Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP contains the following two LEDs (Figure 4) that
indicate the status of the board’s voltage regulation circuitry and the processor:
The CPU LED (Figure 4, A) indicates an elevated temperature on the processor that
could affect performance.
The VR LED (Figure 4, B) indicates an elevated temperature in the processor
voltage regulator circuit that could affect performance.

Speaker
A speaker is mounted on the Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP. The speaker provides
audible error code (beep code) information during the Power-On Self-Test (POST). For
a description of the board’s beep codes, refer to Appendix A.
Battery
A battery on the Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP keeps the values in CMOS RAM and
the clock current when the computer is turned off. For instructions on how to replace
the battery, go to page 53.

Before You Begin
CAUTIONS
The procedures in this chapter assume familiarity with the general terminology
associated with personal computers and with the safety practices and regulatory
compliance required for using and modifying electronic equipment.
Before performing any of the procedures described in this chapter, disconnect the
computer from its power source and from any telecommunications links, networks, or
modems. Failure to disconnect power, telecommunications links, networks, or modems
before you open the computer or perform any procedures can result in personal injury
or equipment damage. Some circuitry on the board can continue to operate even
though the front panel power button is off.
Before you begin, follow these guidelines:
Always follow the steps in each procedure in the correct order.
Set up a log to record information about your computer, such as model, serial
numbers, installed options, and configuration information.
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage components. Perform the procedures
described in this chapter only at an ESD workstation using an antistatic wrist strap
and a conductive foam pad. If such a station is not available, you can provide some
ESD protection by wearing an antistatic wrist strap and attaching it to a metal part
of the computer chassis.

Installation Precautions
When you install and test the Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP, observe all warnings
and cautions in the installation instructions.
To avoid injury, be careful of:
Sharp pins on connectors
Sharp pins on printed circuit assemblies
Rough edges and sharp corners on the chassis
Hot components (such as processors, voltage regulators, and heatsinks)
Damage to wires that could cause a short circuit
Observe all warnings and cautions that instruct you to refer computer servicing to
qualified technical personnel.
Prevent Power Supply Overload
Do not overload the power supply output. To avoid overloading the power supply,
make sure the calculated total current loads of all the modules within the computer is
less than the output current rating of each of the power supply’s output circuits.
Observe Safety and Regulatory Requirements
Read and follow the instructions in this section and the instructions supplied with the
chassis and associated modules. If you do not follow these instructions and the

Installing the I/O Shield
The Workstation Board comes with an I/O shield. When installed in the chassis, the
shield blocks radio frequency transmissions, protects internal components from dust
and foreign objects, and promotes correct airflow within the chassis.
You must install the I/O shield before installing the Workstation Board in the chassis.
Place the shield inside the chassis as shown in Figure 5. Press the shield into place so
it fits tightly and securely. If the shield does not fit, obtain a properly-sized shield from
the chassis supplier.

the following procedures, you must disconnect the computer from its power source.
Failure to disconnect the power before you open the computer can result in personal
injury or equipment damage.

Installing a Processor
CAUTION
Before installing or removing a processor, make sure the AC power is removed by
unplugging the power cord from the computer; the standby power LED should not be
lit (see Figure 3 on page 22). Failure to do so could damage the processor and the
board.
To install a processor, follow these instructions:
1. Observe the precautions in "Before You Begin" on page 25.
2. Open the socket lever by pushing the lever down and away from the socket
(Figure 7, A and B).

3. Lift the load plate as shown in Figure 8.

4. Remove the protective socket cover from the socket by grasping the cover and
lifting straight up as shown in Figure 9. Do not touch the socket contacts. Do not
discard the protective socket cover. Make sure to always replace the cover if the
processor is removed from the socket.

5. Remove the processor from the protective processor cover. Hold the processor only
at the edges, being careful not to touch the bottom of the processor (Figure 10).
Do not discard the protective processor cover. If the processor is removed from the
socket, always replace the processor cover.

6. Hold the processor with your thumb and index finger oriented as shown in
Figure 11. Make sure your fingers align to the socket cutouts (Figure 11, A). Align
notches (Figure 11, B) with the posts on the socket (Figure 11, C). Lower the
processor straight down without tilting or sliding it in the socket.

Installing the Processor Fan Heatsink
The Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP has mounting holes for a processor fan
heatsink. For instructions on how to attach the processor fan heatsink to the board,
refer to the boxed processor manual or boxed thermal solution manual.
Connecting the Processor Fan Heatsink Cable
Connect the processor fan heatsink cable to the 4-pin processor fan header (Figure
13). A fan with a 4-pin connector as shown in Figure 13, A is recommended; however,
you can also use a fan with a 3-pin connector (Figure 13, B). However, since the fan
with a 3-pin connector cannot use the onboard fan control, the fan will always operate
at full speed.

Installing and Removing Memory
The Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP has four 240-pin DDR3 DIMM sockets arranged
in three channels (A, B, and C). Channel A shares two sockets (DIMM 0 and DIMM 1)
and Channels B and C have one socket each.
Guidelines for Memory Configuration
Before installing DIMMs, read and follow these guidelines for memory configuration.
You can achieve optimal memory performance by installing three matched DIMMS of
equal speed and size in the blue DIMM slots (Channel A, DIMM 0, Channel B, and
Channel C) as shown in Figure 14.

Installing memory in Channel A, DIMM 1 may result in less than optimal memory
performance.
To obtain dual channel memory operation, install matching DIMMs as shown in
Figure 15. A typical single channel configuration is shown in Figure 16.

Installing DIMMs
To make sure you have the correct DIMM, place it on the illustration of the DDR3
DIMM in Figure 17. All the notches should match with the DDR3 DIMM.

NOTE
Using a DIMM with a voltage rating higher than 1.6 V may damage the processor.
To install a DIMM, follow these steps:
1. Observe the precautions in "Before You Begin" on page 25.
2. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the computer. Turn off the computer
and disconnect the AC power cord.
3. Remove the computer’s cover and locate the DIMM sockets (see Figure 18).
4. Make sure the clips at either end of the DIMM socket(s) are pushed outward to the
open position.
5. Holding the DIMM by the edges, remove it from its anti-static package.
6. Position the DIMM above the socket. Align the small notch at the bottom edge of
the DIMM with the keys in the socket (see inset in Figure 18).
7. Insert the bottom edge of the DIMM into the socket.
8. When the DIMM is inserted, push down on the top edge of the DIMM until the
retaining clips snap into place. Make sure the clips are firmly in place.
9. Replace the computer’s cover and reconnect the AC power cord.

Removing DIMMs
To remove a DIMM, follow these steps:
1. Observe the precautions in "Before You Begin" on page 25.
2. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the computer and then turn off the
computer.
3. Remove the AC power cord from the computer.
4. Remove the computer’s cover.
5. Gently spread the retaining clips at each end of the DIMM socket. The DIMM pops
out of the socket.
6. Hold the DIMM by the edges, lift it away from the socket, and store it in an
anti-static package.
7. Reinstall and reconnect any parts you removed or disconnected to reach the DIMM
sockets.
8. Replace the computer’s cover and reconnect the AC power cord.

Installing and Removing a PCI Express* x16
Card
CAUTION
When installing a PCI Express* card on the Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP, ensure
the card is fully seated in the PCI Express* connector before you power on the system.
If the card is not fully seated in the connector, an electrical short may result across the
connector pins. Depending on the over-current protection of the power supply, certain
board components and/or traces may be damaged.
If you are installing a single PCI Express* x16 graphics card, install it in the PCI
Express* primary connector (Figure 19, A) for optimum performance. However, if you
are installing two PCI Express* x16 graphics cards, install them in the PCI Express*
x16 primary (Figure 19, A) and secondary connectors (Figure 19, B).
Follow these instructions to install any PCI Express* x16 card:
1. Observe the precautions in "Before You Begin" on page 25.
2. Place the card in a PCI Express* x16 connector (Figure 20, A) and press down on
the card until it is completely seated in the connector and the card retention notch
on the card snaps into place around the retention mechanism pin on the connector.
3. Secure the card’s metal bracket to the chassis back panel with a screw
(Figure 20, B).

Removing a PCI Express* x16 Card
Follow these instructions to remove a PCI Express x16 card from a connector:
1. Observe the precautions in "Before You Begin" on page 25.
2. Remove the screw (Figure 21, A) that secures the card’s metal bracket to the
chassis back panel.
3. Push the card ejector lever down using the tip of a pencil or similar tool
(Figure 21, B) in the notch. This releases the card from the connector (C).
4. Pull the card straight up.

Connecting the Serial ATA (SATA) Cables
SATA cables support the Serial ATA protocol. You can use each cable to connect one
internal SATA drive to the Workstation Board. For correct cable function:

2. Attach one end of the SATA cable to one of the SATA connectors on the board
(Figure 22, A) and attach the other end of the cable to the SATA drive

Clearing Passwords
This procedure assumes the board is installed in the computer and the configuration
jumper block is set to normal mode.

computer. Disconnect the computer’s power cord from the AC power source (wall
outlet or power adapter).
3. Remove the computer cover.
4. Find the configuration jumper block (see Figure 27).
5. Place the jumper on pins 2-3 as shown:
6. Replace the cover, plug in the computer, turn on the computer, and allow it to
boot.
7. The computer starts the Setup program. Setup displays the Maintenance menu.
8. Use the arrow keys to select Clear Passwords. Press <Enter> and Setup displays a
pop-up screen requesting that you confirm clearing the password. Select Yes and
press <Enter>. Setup displays the maintenance menu again.
9. Press <F10> to save the current values and exit Setup.
10. Turn off the computer. Disconnect the computer’s power cord from the AC power
source.
11. Remove the computer cover.

Replacing the Battery
A coin-cell battery (CR2032) powers the real-time clock and CMOS memory. When the
computer is not plugged into a wall socket, the battery has an estimated life of three
years. When the computer is plugged in, the standby current from the power supply
extends the life of the battery. The clock is accurate to 13 minutes/year at 25º C
with 3.3 VSB applied.
When the voltage drops below a certain level, the BIOS Setup program settings stored
in CMOS RAM (for example, the date and time) might not be accurate. Replace the
battery with an equivalent one. Figure 28 on page 57 shows the location of the
battery.

Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type. Batteries should be
recycled where possible. Disposal of used batteries must be in accordance with local
environmental regulations.

To replace the battery, follow these steps:
1. Observe the precautions in "Before You Begin" (see page 25).
2. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the computer. Disconnect the
computer’s power cord from the AC power source (wall outlet or power adapter).

4. Locate the battery on the board (see Figure 28).
5. With a medium flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry the battery free from its
connector. Note the orientation of the “+” and “-” on the battery.
6. Install the new battery in the connector, orienting the “+” and “-” correctly.

The BIOS Setup program can be used to view and change the BIOS settings for the
computer. You can access the BIOS Setup program by pressing the <F2> key after
the Power-On Self-Test (POST) memory test begins and before the operating system
boot begins.
This chapter tells you how to update the BIOS by either using the Intel
Update utility or the Iflash Memory Update utility, and how to recover the BIOS if an
update fails.
Updating the BIOS with the Intel® Express
BIOS Update Utility
®
Express BIOS
With the Intel® Express BIOS Update utility you can update the system BIOS while in
the Windows environment. The BIOS file is included in an automated update utility
that combines the functionality of the Intel
of use of Windows-based installation wizards.
To update the BIOS with the Intel
1. Go to the Intel World Wide Web site:
http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/
2. Navigate to the Intel
updates,” and select the Express BIOS Update utility file.
3. Download the file to your hard drive. (You can also save this file to a removable
USB device. This is useful if you are updating the BIOS for multiple identical
systems.)
4. Close all other applications. This step is required. Your system will be rebooted at
the last Express BIOS Update window.
5. Double-click the executable file from the location on your hard drive where it was
saved. This runs the update program.
6. Follow the instructions provided in the dialog boxes to complete the BIOS update.
Updating the BIOS with the ISO Image BIOS Update
File
The ISO Image BIOS update allows for the update of an Intel® Workstation Board
BIOS to the latest production release regardless of the operating system installed on
the computer's hard drive and without the need to remove the BIOS configuration
jumper. It requires a blank CD-R, a read/writeable CD drive, and software capable of
uncompressing and writing the ISO image file to CD.
The image uses ISOLINUX* bootloader and automatically launches a script to upgrade
the BIOS via the Iflash utility.

CAUTION
Do not interrupt the process or the system may not function properly.
Follow these instructions to upgrade the BIOS using the ISO Image BIOS file:
1. Download the ISO Image BIOS file.
2. Using software capable of uncompressing and writing an ISO image file to CD, burn
the data to a blank CD.
NOTE
Copying the ISO Image BIOS file to CD will not work. The completed CD should
contain multiple files and a directory.
3. Insert the CD created in the CD-ROM drive of the computer to be upgraded and
boot the system.
4. When the "Press ENTER to continue booting from CD-ROM" prompt displays, press
the Enter key. The system boots from the hard drive if no key is pressed within 15
seconds.
5. At the "Welcome to the Intel
press any key to confirm the BIOS upgrade operation.
6. Wait for the BIOS upgrade process to complete.

Updating the BIOS with the Iflash Memory Update
Utility
With the Iflash Memory update utility, you can update the system BIOS from a
bootable CD-ROM, bootable USB flash drive, or other bootable USB media. The utility
available on the Intel World Wide Web site provides a simple method for creating a
bootable CD-ROM that automatically updates your BIOS. You can also extract the
Iflash BIOS update files locally to your hard drive and copy them to a bootable USB
flash drive or other bootable USB media.
The Iflash Memory update utility allows you to:
Update the BIOS and Intel Management Engine in flash memory
Update the language section of the BIOS
NOTE
Before attempting a BIOS update, review the instructions distributed with the update
utility.

CAUTION

1. Uncompress the BIOS update file and copy the .BIO file, IFLASH.EXE, and .ITK file
(optional) to a bootable USB flash drive or other bootable USB media.
2. Configure the BIOS or use the F10 option during POST to boot to the USB device.
3. Manually run the IFLASH.EXE file from the USB device and manually update the
BIOS.
Recovering the BIOS
It is unlikely that anything will interrupt the BIOS update; however, if an interruption
occurs, the BIOS could be damaged. Due to BIOS size and recovery requirements, a
CD-R with the .BIO file in the root directory is required.

4 Configuring for RAID
Configuring for RAID Using Intel® Matrix
Storage Technology
NOTE
Intel® Matrix Storage Technology requires Microsoft Windows Vista* or Microsoft
Windows XP* operating system and SATA hard drives.
Configuring the BIOS
1. Assemble your system and attach two or more SATA hard drives to the SATA
connectors.
2. Enter system BIOS Setup by pressing <F2> after the Power-On-Self-Test (POST)
memory tests begin.
3. Go to Advanced Drive Configuration Configure SATA as; ensure RAID is
selected and then save your settings by pressing <F10>.
Creating Your RAID Set
1. Upon re-boot, you will see the following Intel® Matrix Storage Manager option ROM
status message on the screen: Press <Ctrl-I> to enter the RAID Configuration Utility.
2. Press <Ctrl-I> and enter the RAID Configuration Utility.
3. In the Intel
Create RAID Volume.
4. Enter a volume name (using English alphanumeric ASCII characters) and press
<Enter>.
5. Use the arrow keys to select RAID 0 or RAID 1 (if only two SATA drives are
available), RAID 5 and RAID 10 (these options only display if three or four SATA
drives are installed, respectively). Once you select the RAID LEVEL, press <Enter>.
6. Select the drives you want to use in the RAID array (only if there are more than
two drives available) and press <Enter>.
7. Select the strip size, if necessary, and press <Enter>.
8. Enter the size of the volume (if you enter less than the maximum volume size, you
can then create a second RAID array on the remaining portion of your volume) and
press <Enter>.
9. Press <Enter> to Create Volume.
10. Exit the Option ROM user interface by pressing <Esc> or going to the EXIT option
in the MAIN MENU.

Drivers and Software
1. Begin Microsoft Windows* Setup by booting from the Microsoft Windows*
installation CD.
2. At the beginning of Microsoft Windows* Setup, press <F6> to install a third-party
SCSI or RAID driver. When prompted, insert the diskette that contains the Intel
Matrix Storage Technology RAID Driver in a USB floppy disk drive. For information

The Intel® Matrix Storage Technology Console software offers the flexibility to upgrade
from a single Serial ATA drive to RAID without reinstalling the operating system, when
you add a second SATA hard drive to the system.

Matrix Storage Technology RAID Drivers and Software" sections.
Once additional SATA drives is added to the system, open the Intel
®
Matrix Storage
Technology Console Software and follow the directions to update to a RAID setup.

A Error Messages and Indicators
Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP reports POST errors in two ways:
By sounding a beep code
By displaying an error message on the monitor
BIOS Beep Codes
The BIOS also issues a beep code (one long tone followed by two short tones) during
POST if the video configuration fails (a faulty video card or no card installed) or if an
external ROM module does not properly checksum to zero. Table 13 lists the BIOS
codes.

BIOS Error Messages
When a recoverable error occurs during the POST, the BIOS displays an error message
describing the problem. Table 14 gives an explanation of the BIOS error messages.

SERIAL PRESENCE DETECT (SPD) device data missing or
inconclusive. Properly programmed SPD device data is required
for reliable operation.
The installed amount of memory in Channel A is not equal to the
amount of memory in Channel B. Maximum memory performance
is achieved with equal amounts of memory installed in each
channel.

There is insufficient space on the Intel® Workstation Board WX58BP to provide
instructions for replacing and disposing of the Lithium ion coin cell battery. For system
safety certification, the following statement or an equivalent statement is required to
be permanently and legibly marked on the chassis near the battery.
CAUTION
Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type. Batteries should be
recycled where possible. Disposal of used batteries must be in accordance with local
environmental regulations.

The electronics industry is transitioning to European Union (EU) Restriction of
Hazardous Substances (RoHS)-compliant products. The RoHS legislation restricts the
use of six materials. One of these restricted materials is lead. Lead is the most
common and problematic of the RoHS restricted materials.
There are exemptions in RoHS that allow the use of lead in some very limited locations
in electronic products. Maximum lead concentration values have been established for
RoHS-compliant electronic products that allow up to 1000 ppm of lead.
Lead-free/Pb-free is a nickname that is often used (or misused) for RoHS-compliant
products. In this case, the term "Lead-free/Pb-free" means that lead has been
removed where required by the RoHS legislation but still may exist as an impurity
below 1000 ppm.
The term "Lead-free 2LI/Pb-free 2LI" means lead-free second level interconnect (2LI).
The balls, leads, or pads used to connect the component to a printed circuit board are
lead-free, but the first level interconnect (FLI) is not lead-free. The use of lead in the
FLI is acceptable because of the RoHS "flip chip" or "die bump" interconnect

“China RoHS” is the term used by industry generally to describe legislation
implemented by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) in the People's Republic of
China for the control of pollution by electronic information products (EIP). The official
title of the China RoHS regulation is “Management Methods for Controlling Pollution by
Electronic Information Products.”
China RoHS bans the same substances and has the same limits as EU RoHS.
However, the China RoHS regulation requires specific product marking and a selfdeclaration of the controlled substances contained in each product.

Korean Class B statement translation: This is household equipment that is certified to
comply with EMC requirements. You may use this equipment in residential
environments and other non-residential environments.
Before computer integration, make sure that the power supply and other modules or
peripherals, as applicable, have passed Class B EMC testing and are marked
accordingly.
Pay close attention to the following when reading the installation instructions for the
host chassis, power supply, and other modules:

Chassis and Component Certifications
Ensure that the chassis and certain components; such as the power supply, peripheral
drives, wiring, and cables; are components certified for the country or market where
used. Agency certification marks on the product are proof of certification. Typical
product certifications include:
In Europe
The CE marking signifies compliance with all applicable European requirements. If the
chassis and other components are not properly CE marked, a supplier’s Declaration of
Conformity statement to the European EMC directive and Low Voltage directive (as
applicable), should be obtained. Additionally, other directives, such as the Radio and
Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) directive may also apply depending
on product features.
In the United States
A certification mark by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) such as UL,
CSA, or ETL signifies compliance with safety requirements. Wiring and cables must
also be UL listed or recognized and suitable for the intended use. The FCC Class B logo
for home or office use signifies compliance with electromagnetic interference (EMI)
requirements.
In Canada
A nationally recognized certification mark such as CSA or cUL signifies compliance with
