How to Use This Guide
The Intel® PRO/1000 T IP Storage Adapter allows companies to build cost-effective Storage Area Networks (SANs) using standard LAN/ Ethernet infrastructure. It uses the new, open iSCSI standard to transmit SCSI storage data over native Ethernet networks, dramatically lowering the total cost of ownership for storage networks while still offering increased reliability, availability, scalability, and manageability of stored data. This adapter is designed to optimize PCI server bus architecture with 66 MHz/ 64-bit performance for high-end storage environments, and connects devices located anywhere on an Ethernet network.
This Quick Installation Guide provides information on how to install the PRO/1000 T IP Storage Adapter, how to download Windows and Linux drivers, and basic adapter configuration information. For complete details on adapter configuration and maintenance, refer to the PRO/1000 T IP Storage AdapterUser Configuration Guide on the CD-ROM.

System Requirements
Before installing the Intel PRO/1000 T IP Storage Adapter, check your system for the following minimum configuration requirements:
• One open 32-bit or 64-bit bus master PCI slot
•64MBofsystemmemory
•ThelatestBIOSforyourcomputer
• Microsoft Windows*^ 2000 (SP2 or later), Windows NT*^ 4.0 (SP 6 or later), Linux Red Hat* version 7.1 (2.4 kernel)
• Category 5, twisted-pair cabling for 100/1000 Mbps operation, and an
802.3ab-compliant gigabit switch such as the Intel® NetStructure™ 480T switch. For best results at 1000 Mbps, use CAT 5e cabling.
^You can download the necessary software patches from Microsoft (see below).
Microsoft Service Packs
Visit the following Microsoft web site for the latest Service Pack information. If this site has changed, go to the main Microsoft site and search for the term, “Service Pack.”

Inserting the Adapter in the Computer
1. Turn off and unplug your computer if it is not a Hot Plug system. For
Hot Plug servers, see your server’s documentation.
2. Remove the cover from the computer.
WARNING: Turn off and unplug the computer before removing the computer cover. Failure to do so could endanger you and may damage the adapter or computer.
3. Remove the cover bracket from the 32-bit or 64-bit PCI bus master
slot. A 64-bit slot should be used whenever possible. In a 32-bit PCI slot, the end of the edge connector will be exposed and not connected. Make sure the exposed end does not contact any conducting part of the motherboard (see Figure 1).
NOTE: The NIC cards in the PCI bus slots in Figure 1 are for illustration
purposes only to show ease of installation. The actual PRO/1000 T IP Storage Adapter card is longer and contains more components than the NICs depicted in Figure 1.

4. Press the adapter into the slot until the adapter is firmly seated. Secure
the adapter bracket.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each adapter you want to install.
6. Replace the computer cover and plug in the power cord.
7. Turn the power on. The computer PCI BIOS automatically assigns
resources to the adapter(s). If you receive a PCI configuration error, see “Troubleshooting” in the User Configuration Guide on the CD.

Attaching the Network Cable
RJ-45 Adapter
Insertthe Category 5 twisted pair RJ-45 network cable into the adapter connector, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2. RJ-45 network cable being inserted into an adapter connector
For 1000Base-T or 100Base-TX, you must use Category 5 network cable (four twisted-pair wiring). If you plan to run the adapter at 1000 Mbps, it must be connected to a compatible 1000 Mbps switch.
NOTE: Most compatible switches do not support all three speeds
(10/100/1000) on a single port. Refer to the switch documentation for details.
For 10Base-T, use Category 3, 4, or 5 twisted-pair wiring. Residential environments require the use of a Category 5 cable.

Basic Troubleshooting
If you cannot link to your switch, try the following suggestions.
1. Check the LED lights on the adapter
If the LINK light isn’t on, check all connections at the adapter and link partner. Make sure the link partner is set to match the adapter (preferably set to Auto Negotiation Enabled) and the driver is loaded.
2. Make sure the cable is installed properly
The network cable must be securely attached at all connections. If the cable is attached but the problem persists, try a different cable.
3. Check the “Common problems” table in the online User Configuration Guide and try the recommended solutions
If none of these works, check the Late-Breaking News document that came in the box with the Intel PRO/1000 T IP Storage Adapter,or check the Intel support Web site. See Intel Automated Customer Supportfor information on connecting to Intel’s online services.
