About this book
This manual contains instructions for setting up, using, maintaining, and
troubleshooting of the iL1210 IBM MicroPortable Projector. The manual is
divided into two parts:
Part 1: Setup guide
This guide contains the product description and expanded installation
instructions.
Part 2: Appendixes
The appendixes contain product specifications, accessories, and help and
service. They also contain the product warranties and notices.
Note: The illustrations in this manual might be slightly different from your
hardware.

Introduction
The iL1210 IBM®MicroPortable Projector is specifically designed for the
mobile presenter. It generates crisp, clear images using Digital Light
Processing (DLP) technology and features an M1-DA connector. The projector
is easy to connect, use, transport, and maintain.
Image resolution
The XGA resolution of the iL1210 projected image is 1024 x 768. The projector
is compatible with screen resolutions up to 1280 x 1024. If your computer
screen resolution is higher than 1280 x 1024, reset it to a lower resolution
before you connect the projector.
Note: The iL1210 automatically expands 640 x 480 and 800 x 600 images to
1024 x 768. You can display these images at their native resolutions
using the Resize option in the Image menu. See “Image menu for
computer sources” on page 20.
Compatibility
The projector is compatible with a wide variety of computers and video
devices, including:
v IBM-compatible computers, including mobile computers, up to 1280 x 1024
resolution.
v Apple Macintosh and PowerBook computers up to 1280 x 1024 resolution.
v Most standard VCRs, DVD players, HDTV sources, camcorders, and laser
disc players.
Note: The projector is compatible with 1080i and 720P HDTV formats.

Unpacking the projector
The projector comes with the items shown in the following illustration. Check
to make sure that all items are included. Contact your dealer immediately if
anything is missing.
If you are experienced in setting up presentation systems, use the Quick Start
card that was included with this option. For complete details on connecting
and operating the projector, refer to the User’s Guide on CD.
Attention: This product contains a Metal Arc Lamp which contains Mercury.
Dispose of it as required by local ordinances and regulations.

Usage guidelines
Observe the following guidelines when using the projector.
Caution: Do not look directly into the projection lens when the lamp is turned
on. The bright light might harm your eyes.
Attention: Follow these guidelines for handling the projector.
v Do not block the grills on the projector. Restricting the airflow can cause it
to overheat and turn off. If this happens, you must wait one minute before
attempting to turn it back on.
v Handle the projector as you would any other product with glass
components. Be especially careful not to drop it.
v Avoid leaving the projector in direct sunlight or extreme cold for extended
periods of time. If this happens, allow it to reach room temperature before
use.
v Transport the projector in a carrying case. See ‘‘Accessories’’ in Appendix A
for information on ordering accessories for your projector.

Setting up the projector
Before turning on your projector, make sure all connections are made. Use the
following procedure to set up the projector:
1. Place the projector on a flat surface.
v The projector must be within 3 meters (10 feet) of your power source
and within 1.8 meters (6 feet) of your computer.
v If you want to project from behind a translucent screen, set up the
projector behind the screen. See “Rear projection” on page 24 for
instructions on reversing the image.
2. Position the projector the desired distance from the screen.
v If the image is too big or too small, set the zoom ring to adjust the size
or move the projector forward or backward. Once you have made all
connections described in this section, you can make adjustments. The
following illustration shows three projected image sizes. For more
information about image size, see “Appendix E. Projected image size”
on page 47.

— Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or
reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
— Connect all power cords to a properly wired outlet.
— Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this
product.
— When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
— Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural
damage.
— Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks,
and modems before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the
installation and configuration procedures.
— Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when
installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.

Note: If you are connecting the projector to a computer, make sure that the
distance between the computer and the projector is 6 feet or less.

Connecting a computer to the projector
The projector comes with an analog computer cable. If your computer has a
digital output port, you can use the optional digital computer cable, which is
sold separately. See “Accessories” on page 28 for ordering information.

1. Plug the single connector end of the computer cable into the connector on
the projector as shown in the illustration below.
2. Plug the blue connector on the other end of the computer cable into the
video connector on your computer.
3. If you want to advance slides in a PowerPoint
™
presentation using the
remote control, plug the USB cable into the USB mouse connector on your
computer.

Notes:
1. Many mobile computers do not automatically turn on their external video
port when a secondary display device such as a projector is connected. See
your computer manual for the command that activates the external video

port. Press Fn F7 on your IBM ThinkPad®to activate the external display.
Activation commands for some mobile computers are listed in Appendix
B.
2. If you are connecting the projector to an older Macintosh computer that
does not have a 15-pin connector, you must use a Mac adapter between
the computer and the projector.
3. The USB mouse is supported for use only with Microsoft
®
Windows®98,
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, and Apple OS 8.5 and later.
4. You do not need to restart your computer after connecting a USB mouse.

Connecting a video player
Use the following procedure to connect a video player.
v If your video player uses a round, one-prong composite video connector,
use the composite video cable.
v If your video player uses a round, four-prong S-video connector, use the
S-video cable. S-video generates a higher quality image.
Attention: Your video player might also have a Video Out connector for a
coaxial cable connection. DO NOT use this to connect to the projector.
1. Plug the yellow composite video cable connector into the Video Out
connector on your video player. This connector might be labeled To
Monitor. If you are using an S-video cable, connect the round black
connector to the Video Out connector on the video player.
2. Plug the square yellow connector into the Composite Video connector on
the projector.
Note: High Definition Television (HDTV) sources must be connected to the
projector using the computer cable (not the video cable).
1Video cable
The projector is compatible with these major broadcast video standards:
NTSC, NTSC 4.43, PAL, PAL-M, PAL-N, PAL-60, and SECAM. It automatically
adjusts to optimize its performance for the incoming video.

Starting the projector and adjusting the image
Use the following procedure to start the projector and adjust the image.
1. Remove the lens cap.
2. Plug the power cord into the side of the projector, and then plug it into an
electrical outlet. A surge-protected power strip is recommended. Always
use the power cord that was included with the projector.
Note: With some computers, the order in which you start the equipment
is very important. Most computers should be turned on last, after
all other peripheral devices have been turned on. Refer to the
computer documentation to determine the order.

3. Press the Power switch on the back of the projector. The fans start to run,
and the LED on the top of the projector lights green until the startup
screen displays. It takes about one minute for the image to achieve full
brightness.
4. If you connected a video player, turn it on.
v The video image is displayed on the projection screen. If it is not, press
the Source button on the keypad or Video button on the remote control
to display your video image.
5. Turn on your computer.
Note: The first time you connect your computer to the projector, the
computer might display a message stating that new hardware was
found. The Add New Hardware Wizard window might open. Use
the wizard to install the correct device driver (the computer
considers the projector to be a Plug and Play monitor)
v The computer image is displayed on the projection screen. If it is not,
press the Source button on the keypad or Data button on the remote to
display your computer image.
v Make sure your mobile computer external video port is activated; see
“Appendix C. Portable and mobile computer activation” on page 39 for
details.
v If necessary, make adjustments to the image using the projector
on-screen menus. To open the menus, press the Menu/Select button on
the keypad or remote control. For more information about the menus
see “Using the on-screen menus” on page 18.
Turning off the projector
To turn off the projector, press the Power switch. If you want to turn the lamp
back on, allow 90 seconds for the lamp to cool. The lamp will not light if it is
too hot.
Note: To maximize lamp life, allow the projector to run for at least five
minutes before turning it off.

Chapter 2. Using the projector
This chapter describes how to use and make adjustments to the projector. It
also provides a reference to the keypad, remote control buttons and the
options that are available from the on-screen menus.
Basic image adjustment
To adjust the image, do the following:
v Make sure that you have turned on your equipment in the correct order.
See “Starting the projector and adjusting the image” on page 10.
v If the image is not displayed completely, zoom the image, adjust the height
of the projector, or center the image by adjusting its horizontal or vertical
position. Be sure the projector is at a 90-degree angle to the screen. See
‘‘horizontal position on page 21 and ‘‘veritcal position’’ on page 22.
v If the image is out of focus, rotate the focus lens.
v If the colors do not display correctly, adjust the brightness, contrast, tint or
color. See “Display menu” on page 19.
Adjusting the projector
To focus the image, rotate the focus ring 2(see the following illustration)
until the image is clear. To adjust the image size, rotate the zoom ring1.
Note: To obtain the best overall focus quality, open a menu and focus the text.
This will ensure that the best overall image quality is achieved. See
“Menu/select” on page 16 for information on opening a menu.

The projector is equipped with a self-locking, quick-release elevator foot and
button. To raise the projector:
1. Press and hold the elevator button 1(see the following illustration).
2. Raise the projector to the height that you want, then release the button to
lock the elevator foot 2 into position.

Using the remote control
To use the Forward and Back buttons on the remote control to advance slides
in PowerPoint, you must connect the USB mouse connector on the computer
cable to the computer. See “Connecting a computer to the projector” on page 7
for details.
Point the remote control at the projection screen or at the front of the projector
(not at the computer). The range for optimum operation is approximately 7.6
meters (25 feet). If you point the remote control at the projection screen, the
distance to the screen and back to the projector must be less than or equal to
7.6 meters (25 feet) or less. For best results, point the remote control directly at
the projector.

Using the keypad and remote control buttons
While the menus are displayed, the Source and Reset buttons on the keypad
act as menu navigation and adjustment buttons, and the menu/select button
acts as a select button. See “Using the on-screen menus” on page 18 for
details.

Menu/select
Press the Menu/Select button to open the on-screen menus. Press
Menu/Select again (while Exit is highlighted) to close the menus. (The menus
automatically close after 30 seconds if no buttons are pressed). When you
close the menus, the projector saves any changes you made. For more
information about the on-screen menus, see “Using the on-screen menus” on
page 18.
Source (keypad only) or data and video (remote control only)
When you have more than one source (computer and video) connected to the
projector, select between them by pressing the Source button on the keypad or
the Data or Video button on the remote control.
Note: If you have turned Auto Source off, you might need to press the source
button more than once to display an active source. The sources switch
in this order: data analog, data digital, S-video, and composite video.
Reset (keypad only)
Use this option to reset the options in the menus (except Language, Video
Standard, and Rear Projection) to their original settings.

Keystone (remote only)
Use this feature to adjust the image vertically and make a square image. Press
the Keystone + button to reduce the upper part of the image 1, and press
the Keystone - button to reduce the lower part2. You can also adjust the
keystone from the Display menu. See “Display menu” on page 19.
Forward/back buttons (remote only)
These buttons act like the page up and page down buttons on your computer
keyboard. You can use them to advance through a slide show in PowerPoint
presentations. To use this feature, connect the USB mouse connector on the
computer cable to your computer. See “Connecting a computer to the
projector” on page 7.
Up/down arrow buttons
Use these buttons to navigate through and make adjustments to the on-screen
menus. See “Using the on-screen menus” on page 18.

Using the on-screen menus
The projector has menus that enable you to make image adjustments and
change a variety of settings. These adjustments are not available directly from
the keypad.
Note: Some menu items might be unavailable at certain times (grayed out or
dimmed). This indicates that the item is not applicable to your setup
(for example, video standards do not apply to computer sources) or the
item is not enabled until another selection is made.
To open the on-screen menus, press the Menu/Select button on the keypad or
remote. The menus automatically close after 30 seconds if no buttons are
pressed. This displays the Main menu and changes the source and reset
buttons on the keypad to menu navigation buttons. Press the down arrow
button to move the cursor down and press the up arrow button to move the
cursor up. The selected menu is highlighted.
To change a menu setting, use the up and down arrow buttons to move the
cursor up and down to the item you want to change (the selected item is
highlighted), then press Menu/Select. When an item is selected, the button
appears depressed to provide a visual indication of the selection.
Use the up and down arrows to adjust the setting or turn it on and off. Press
Menu/Select when you are done. Press the up and down arrows to move to
another setting. When you complete your adjustments, navigate to Exit, then
press Menu/Select. You are returned to the top of the Main menu. Press
Menu/Select again to exit the Main menu, or navigate to another submenu.

Display menu
To access the Display menu settings, press the Menu/Select button to display
the Main menu, press the down arrow to highlight Display, then press
Menu/Select again to access the Display menu.
Keystone
This option helps to keep the image square as the angle of projection. Use this
feature to adjust the image vertically and make a square image. See “Keystone
(remote only)” on page 17 for details on keystone adjustment.
Press the down button to highlight Keystone, then press Menu/Select. Use the
up and down arrows to adjust the keystone setting. Press Menu/Select to
accept your changes.
Brightness
Adjusting the brightness changes the intensity of the image. Use the up and
down arrows to highlight Brightness, press Menu/Select, use the arrows to
adjust the brightness, then press Menu/Select to accept your changes.
Contrast
The contrast controls the degree of difference between the lightest and darkest
parts of the picture. Adjusting the contrast changes the amount of black and
white in the image.
Use the up and down arrows to highlight Contrast, press Menu/Select, use
the arrows to adjust the contrast; then press Menu/Select to accept your
changes.
Tint
The tint adjusts the red-green color balance in the projected image.

Use the up and down arrows to highlight Tint, press Menu/Select, use the
arrows to adjust the tint, then press Menu/Select to accept your changes.
Color
The color setting adjusts a video image from black and white to fully
saturated color. Use the up and down arrows to highlight Color, press
Menu/Select, use the arrows to adjust the color, then press Menu/Select to
accept your changes.
Blank screen
The Blank Screen setting determines what color is displayed when there is no
active source and when the projector is in standby.
Use the up and down arrows to highlight Blank screen, press Menu/Select,
use the arrows to cycle through the options blue, black, and white, then press
Menu/Select to accept your selection.
Image menu for computer sources
To access the Image menu settings, press the Menu/Select button to display
the Main menu, press the down arrow to highlight Image, then press
Menu/Select again to access the Image menu.
Resize
Resize enables you to select from among four different re-sizing options. The
default is Standard, which resizes the image from its original version to fit a
standard 4x3 aspect ratio screen. Widescreen Letterbox preserves the 16x9
aspect ratio of the original theater version, but the image is placed in a 4x3
space, so black bars appear at the top and bottom of the image.
Enhanced Widescreen also preserves the aspect ratio of the original theater
version and is designed to be used with content that is Enhanced for
Widescreen TVs. This option yields more detail than Widescreen Letterbox.
Native reduces the Standard size to match the height of Enhanced

Widescreen. Highlight Resize, press Menu/Select, use the up or down arrows
to cycle through the options, then press Menu/Select to select.
Auto Image
The projector automatically adjusts tracking, signal synchronization and
vertical and horizontal position for most computers. If you want to adjust
these features manually, you must turn off Auto image first. Highlight Auto
image, press Menu/Select; then press the up or down arrow buttons to turn
this feature off and on.
Manual sync
The projector adjusts signal synchronization automatically for most
computers. If the projected computer image looks fuzzy or streaked, try
turning Auto image off then back on again. If the image still looks distorted,
try adjusting the signal synchronization manually:
1. Turn Auto Image off.
2. Highlight Manual sync, and press Menu/Select, use the arrow buttons to
adjust Manual sync until the image is sharp and free of streaks, then press
Menu/Select.
Manual tracking
The projector adjusts tracking automatically to match the video signal from
your computer. However, if the display shows evenly spaced, fuzzy, vertical
lines or if the projected image is too wide or too narrow for the screen, try
turning Auto Image off then back on again. If the image is still distorted, try
adjusting the tracking manually:
1. Turn Auto Image off.
2. Highlight Manual tracking, and then press the left or right navigation
button repeatedly until the fuzzy vertical bars are gone.
Note: The Manual sync, Manual tracking, Horizontal position and
Vertical position options are available only for analog computer
sources. The projector sets these options automatically for digital
computer and video sources with no manual override.
Horizontal position
Follow these steps to manually adjust the horizontal position:

1. Turn Auto Image off.
2. Highlight Horizontal position, and then press Menu/Select, use the arrow
buttons to adjust the Horizontal position, then press Menu/Select.
Positioning adjustments are saved when you turn off the projector.
Vertical position
Follow these steps to manually adjust the vertical position:
1. Turn Auto Image off.
2. Highlight Vertical position, press Menu/Select, use the arrow buttons to
adjust the Vertical position, then press Menu/Select.
Positioning adjustments are saved when you turn off the projector.
Image menu for video sources
The following describes the Image menu for video sources.
Resize
Resize enables you to select from among four different re-sizing options. The
default is Standard, which resizes the image from its original version to fit a
standard 4x3 aspect ratio screen. Widescreen Letterbox preserves the 16x9
aspect ratio of the original theater version, but the image is placed in a 4x3
space, accounting for the black bars located at the top and bottom of the
image.
Enhanced Widescreen also preserves the aspect ratio of the original theater
version and is designed to be used with content that is Enhanced for
Widescreen TVs. This option yields more detail than Widescreen Letterbox.
Native reduces the Standard size to match the height of Enhanced
Widescreen. Highlight Resize, press Menu/Select, use the up or down arrows

Video standard (video sources only)
When Video is set to Auto, the projector attempts to pick the video standard
(NTSC, NTSC 4.43, PAL, or SECAM) automatically based on the input signal
it receives. (The video standard options may vary depending on your region
of the world.) If the projector is unable to detect the correct standard, the
colors might not display correctly or the image might appear distorted. If this
happens, manually select a video standard.
Highlight Video standard, press Menu/Select, use the up or down arrows to
cycle through the options, then press Menu/Select to select.
Control menu
To access the Control menu settings, press the Menu/Select button to display
the Main menu, press the down arrow to highlight Control; then press
Menu/Select again to access the Control menu.
Auto source
When Auto Source is On, the projector automatically finds the active source,
checking the default source first. When this feature is Off, the projector
defaults to the source selected in Default Source. To display another source,
you must manually select one by pressing the Source button on the keypad or
the Data or Video button on the remote.
Highlight Auto source, press Menu/Select, then press the up or down arrow
buttons to turn this feature off and on.
Default source
This determines which source the projector checks first for active video when
you turn it on. Select Data-Analog, Data-Digital, composite video, or S-Video.
Highlight Default source; then press Menu/Select. Use the up or down
arrows to cycle through the options; then press Menu/Select to select.

Advanced menu
To access the Advanced menu settings, press the Menu/Select button to
display the Main menu. Press the down arrow to highlight Advanced; then
press Menu/Select again to access the Advanced menu.
Rear projection
When you turn Rear Projection on, the projector reverses the image so you
can project from behind a translucent screen. Highlight Rear Projection, press
Menu/Select, then press the up or down arrow buttons to turn this feature off
and on.
Reset
Highlight Reset then press Menu/Select to reset the options in the menus
(except Language, Video Standard, and Rear Projection) to their original
settings.
Language menu
You can display the on-screen menus in English, French, German, Spanish,
Chinese or Japanese.
v Press the Menu/Select button to display the Main menu, press the arrow
buttons to highlight Language; then pres Menu/Select again to access the
Language menu.
v Press the arrow buttons to highlight the desired language, then press
Menu/Select. Press the arrow to navigate to the exit option. Press
Menu/Select to exit this menu and return to the Main menu.

Status menu
This is a read-only menu for informational purposes. To display the Status
menu, highlight Status from the Main menu, then press Menu/Select.
Lamp hours used
Indicates how many hours the current lamp has been in use. The counter
starts at zero hours and counts each hour the lamp is in use. Replace the bulb
when the brightness is no longer acceptable. See “Replacing the projection
lamp” on page 30 for details.
Computer resolution
Shows your computer’s resolution setting. To change this, go to your
computer’s Control Panel and adjust the resolution in the Display tab. See
your computer’s user’s guide for details.
Source
Indicates the active source, Data-Analog, Data-Digital, Composite video, or
S-video.
Version
Indicates the projector software version. This information is useful when
contacting Technical Support.

Cleaning the lens
Follow these steps to clean the projection lens:
1. Apply a non-abrasive camera lens cleaner to a soft, dry cloth.
v Avoid using an excessive amount of cleaner, and do not apply the
cleaner directly to the lens.
v Abrasive cleaners, solvents or other harsh chemicals might scratch the
lens.
2. Lightly wipe the cleaning cloth over the lens in a circular motion.
3. If you do not intend to use the projector immediately, replace the lens cap.
CAUTION:
The following label indicates a hot surface nearby.

Replacing the projection lamp
WARNING:
To avoid burns, allow the projector to cool for at least 30 minutes before
you open the lamp access grill. Never extract the lamp module while the
projector is operating.
The lamp hour counter in the Status menu counts the number of hours the
lamp has been in use. Change the lamp when the brightness is no longer
acceptable. You can order new lamp modules. See ‘‘Accessories’’ in Appendix
A for ordering information.
Follow these steps to replace the projection lamp:
1. Turn off the projector by unplugging the power cord.
2. Wait 30 minutes to allow the projector to cool thoroughly.
3. Insert a small screwdriver or other flat object into the slot near the front
of the projector. Slide the screwdriver toward the back of the projector to
disengage the lamp access grill, then slide the lamp access grill off (away
from the lens.

4. Pull the yellow tab 1on the lamp module.
WARNING:
Be extremely careful when removing the lamp module. In the
unlikely event that the bulb breaks, small glass fragments might be
generated. The lamp module is designed to contain these fragments,
but use caution when removing the lamp module.
Attention: This product contains a Metal Arc Lamp which contains
Mercury. Dispose of it as required by local ordinances and regulations.

5. Loosen the captive screw on the lamp module.
WARNING:
Never operate the projector with the lamp access grill removed.
This disrupts the air flow and causes the projector to overheat.

6. Grasp the pull tab 1to pull the lamp module out. Dispose of the lamp
module in an environmentally proper manner.
WARNING:
Do not drop the lamp module or touch the glass bulb. The glass
may shatter and cause injury.
7. Install the new lamp module.
8. Tighten the screw on the outside of the module.
9. Press the yellow tab to reconnect the lamp module.
10. Replace the lamp access grill by lining up the ribs on the grill with the
marks on the bottom case and sliding the grill in the direction of the
arrows on the bottom case.
11. Plug in the power cord and press the Power switch to turn the projector
back on.
12. To reset the lamp hour counter in the Status menu, press and hold the
reset button, then press the menu/select button (while still holding down
the reset button) for 10 seconds. Verify that the counter was reset by
pressing the menu/select button and viewing the counter in the Status
menu. See “Status menu” on page 25 for details.

Replacing the batteries in the remote control
The life of the batteries depends on how often and how long you use the
remote control. Symptoms of low battery charge include erratic responses
when using the remote control and a reduced range of operation.
Follow these steps to replace the batteries:
1. Turn the remote face down in your hand.
2. Push the tab on the battery door toward the top of the remote and lift the
door off.
3. Remove the old batteries and dispose of them in an environmentally
proper manner.
4. Install two new AAA alkaline batteries. Make sure you install each battery
in the correct direction.
5. Insert the hooks on the battery door into the remote control and press the
tab to re-install the door.

Using the security lock
The projector has a security connector to use with a computer lock system. Go
to http://www.compu-lock.com for ordering information. Refer to the
information that comes with the lock for instructions on how to secure it to
the projector.
Note: The lamp cannot be removed while the security lock is attached.

Troubleshooting
Problem: The projector is not running.
v Make sure that the power cord is properly connected to a fully functional
ac electrical outlet. Make sure that the power cord is also properly
connected to the projector.
v If the projector is plugged into a power strip, make sure the power strip is
turned on.
v Make sure the projector is turned on.
Problem: Projector is running, but nothing appears on projection screen.
v Make sure you have removed the lens cap on the projection lens at the
front of the projector.
v Check the projector’s lamp to ensure that it is securely connected in the
lamp module. Make sure the lamp access grill is installed. See “Replacing
the projection lamp” on page 30.
Problem: Only the start-up screen displays.
v Verify that the cables are connected correctly. See for “Connecting a
computer to the projector” on page 7 for connection procedures.
v Make sure that the cables do not have any bent pins.
v Verify that the proper input source is connected. See “Source (keypad only)
or data and video (remote control only)” on page 16.
v You might need to turn everything off and power up the equipment again
in the proper order. Refer to your computer’s documentation to determine
the correct order.
v Make sure the computer external video port is turned on. See the
“Appendix C. Portable and mobile computer activation” on page 39 or your
computer’s manual for details.
v Make sure your computer video board is installed and configured correctly.
v Make sure your computer has a compatible video board. The projector isn’t
CGA or EGA compatible.
If you are using Windows 98:
1. Open the “My Computer” icon, the Control Panel folder and then the
Display icon.
2. Click the Settings tab.
3. Verify that the Desktop area is set to 1280x1024 or less.
Problem: Color or text not being projected.
You might need to adjust the brightness up or down until the text is visible.
Refer to “Brightness’’ on p. 19 for more information.

Problem: The screen resolution is not correct.
v Make sure the computer’s video card is set for a resolution of no greater
than 1280 x 1024.
Problem: Image is not centered on the screen.
v Move the projector to reposition the image.
v Reposition the image using the menu. Refer to ‘‘Horizontal position’’ on
page 21 and ‘‘‘Vertical position’’ on page 22.
v Be sure the projector is at a 90-degree angle to the screen.
Problem: Image is too wide or narrow for screen.
v Adjust the zoom or projector placement.
v Adjust the resolution of your video card if it is greater than 1280 x 1024.
Problem: Image is out of focus.
v Turn the projection lens to focus the image.
v Make sure the projection screen is at least 1.5 m (5 feet) from the projector.
v Check the projection lens to see if it needs cleaning.
Problem: Image and menus are reversed left to right.
v Rear projection mode is probably turned on. Turn Rear Projection off in the
Controls menu. The image should immediately return to forward
projection. See “Rear projection” on page 24.
Problem: the projector displays vertical lines or spot.
v Adjust the brightness. For more information see “Brightness” on page 19.
v Check the projection lens to see if it needs cleaning.
Problem: The image is streaked.
Try these steps in this order:
1. Deactivate the screen saver on your computer.
2. Turn Auto Image off, and then on again. See “Auto image” on page 21.
3. Turn Auto Image off, and adjust the synchronization and tracking
manually to find an optimal setting. See “Manual sync” and “Manual
tracking” on page 21. The problem might be with your computer video
adapter. If possible, connect the projector to a different computer.

Problem: Projected colors don’t match the computer or video player color.
Just as there are differences in the displays of different monitors, there are
often differences between the computer image and the projected image. Adjust
the brightness, tint and/or contrast from the Display menu. See “Brightness’’,
“Tint’’ and “Contrast’’ on page 19.
Problem: Lamp seems to be getting dimmer.
The lamp begins to lose brightness when it has been in use for a long time.
Replace the lamp as described in “Replacing the projection lamp” on page 30.
Problem: The lamp shuts off.
v A minor power surge may cause the lamp to shut off. Unplug the projector,
wait at least a minute, then plug it back in.
v Make sure that the vents are not blocked.

Many mobile computers do not automatically turn on their external video
port when a projector is connected. Activation commands for some mobile
computers are listed in the following table. (If your computer is not listed or
the given command does not work, refer to the computer documentation for
the appropriate command.) On many mobile computers, the activation
function key is labeled CRT/LCD or with an icon such as:

Appendix D. Using video mirroring
Using video mirroring with a PowerBook computer
When you turn on video mirroring (called SimulScan in newer PowerBook
computers), the projector displays the same information that appears on a
PowerBook built-in screen. When video mirroring is off, the projector operates
like a separate display.
To turn on video mirroring for the first time:
1. Open the Monitors control panel; click Monitor 2.
2. Set the number of colors that you want.
3. Open the Control Strip, and then click the monitor icon.
4. Select Turn Video Mirroring On.
Now you can turn video mirroring on and off from the Control Strip without
having to open the monitor control panel again. When using video mirroring
and high-color graphics such as slide shows, the projected image occasionally
might turn black and white. If this happens, perform the following steps:
1. Turn off video mirroring.
2. Open the monitor control panel.
3. Move the white menu bar to Monitor 2 to set the projector as the primary
monitor.
4. Restart the PowerBook computer.
Using Simulscan
Some newer PowerBook computers display images on an external monitor or
projector differently than previous ones. When using SimulScan, the projector
displays the same information that appears on your PowerBook computer. To
select SimulScan:
1. Open the Control Panel, and then double-click Monitors and Sound.
2. In the Resolution list, select the SimulScan mode, and then click OK.
3. If this changes your display settings, a window opens. Click OK to
confirm the change.

(“Specifications”). The warranty period for a Machine is a specified, fixed
period commencing on its Date of Installation. The date on your sales receipt
is the Date of Installation unless IBM or your reseller informs you otherwise.
If a Machine does not function as warranted during the warranty period, and
IBM or your reseller are unable to either 1) make it do so or 2) replace it with
one that is at least functionally equivalent, you may return it to your place of
purchase and your money will be refunded.

The warranty does not cover the repair or exchange of a Machine resulting
from misuse, accident, modification, unsuitable physical or operating
environment, improper maintenance by you, or failure caused by a product
for which IBM is not responsible. The warranty is voided by removal or
alteration of Machine or parts identification labels.
THESE WARRANTIES ARE YOUR EXCLUSIVE WARRANTIES AND
REPLACE ALL OTHER WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS, EXPRESS OR
IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED

Items Not Covered by Warranty
IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of a Machine.
Any technical or other support provided for a Machine under warranty, such
as assistance via telephone with “how-to” questions and those regarding
Machine set-up and installation, will be provided WITHOUT WARRANTIES
OF ANY KIND.
Warranty Service
To obtain warranty service for a Machine, contact IBM or your reseller. If you
do not register your Machine with IBM, you may be required to present proof
of purchase.
During the warranty period, IBM or your reseller, if approved by IBM to
provide warranty service, provides without charge certain types of repair and
exchange service to keep Machines in, or restore them to, conformance with
their Specifications. IBM or your reseller will inform you of the available
types of service for a Machine based on its country of installation. At its
discretion, IBM or your reseller will 1) either repair or exchange the failing
Machine and 2) provide the service either at your location or a service center.
IBM or your reseller will also manage and install selected engineering changes
that apply to the Machine.
Some parts of IBM Machines are designated as Customer Replaceable Units
(called “CRUs”), e.g., keyboards, memory, or hard disk drives. IBM ships

CRUs to you for replacement by you. You must return all defective CRUs to
IBM within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement CRU. You are
responsible for downloading designated Machine Code and Licensed Internal
Code updates from an IBM Internet Web site or from other electronic media,
and following the instructions that IBM provides.
When warranty service involves the exchange of a Machine or part, the item
IBM or your reseller replaces becomes its property and the replacement
becomes yours. You represent that all removed items are genuine and
unaltered. The replacement may not be new, but will be in good working
order and at least functionally equivalent to the item replaced. The
replacement assumes the warranty service status of the replaced item. Many
features, conversions, or upgrades involve the removal of parts and their
return to IBM. A part that replaces a removed part will assume the warranty
service status of the removed part.
Before IBM or your reseller exchanges a Machine or part, you agree to remove
all features, parts, options, alterations, and attachments not under warranty
service.
You also agree to
1. ensure that the Machine is free of any legal obligations or restrictions that
prevent its exchange;
2. obtain authorization from the owner to have IBM or your reseller service a
Machine that you do not own; and
3. where applicable, before service is provided:
a. follow the problem determination, problem analysis, and service
request procedures that IBM or your reseller provides;
b. secure all programs, data, and funds contained in a Machine;
c. provide IBM or your reseller with sufficient, free, and safe access to
your facilities to permit them to fulfill their obligations; and
d. inform IBM or your reseller of changes in a Machine’s location.
IBM is responsible for loss of, or damage to, your Machine while it is 1) in
IBM’s possession or 2) in transit in those cases where IBM is responsible for
the transportation charges.
Neither IBM nor your reseller is responsible for any of your confidential,
proprietary or personal information contained in a Machine which you return
to IBM or your reseller for any reason. You should remove all such
information from the Machine prior to its return.
Limitation of Liability
Circumstances may arise where, because of a default on IBM’s part or other
liability, you are entitled to recover damages from IBM. In each such instance,

regardless of the basis on which you are entitled to claim damages from IBM
(including fundamental breach, negligence, misrepresentation, or other
contract or tort claim), except for any liability that cannot be waived or
limited by applicable laws, IBM is liable for no more than
1. damages for bodily injury (including death) and damage to real property
and tangible personal property; and
2. the amount of any other actual direct damages, up to the charges (if
recurring, 12 months’ charges apply) for the Machine that is subject of the
claim. For purposes of this item, the term “Machine” includes Machine
Code and Licensed Internal Code.
This limit also applies to IBM’s suppliers and your reseller. It is the
maximum for which IBM, its suppliers, and your reseller are collectively
responsible.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS IBM LIABLE FOR ANY OF THE
FOLLOWING: 1) THIRD-PARTY CLAIMS AGAINST YOU FOR
DAMAGES (OTHER THAN THOSE UNDER THE FIRST ITEM LISTED
ABOVE); 2) LOSS OF, OR DAMAGE TO, YOUR RECORDS OR DATA; OR
3) SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR INDIRECT DAMAGES OR FOR ANY
ECONOMIC CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, LOST PROFITS OR LOST
SAVINGS, EVEN IF IBM, ITS SUPPLIERS OR YOUR RESELLER IS
INFORMED OF THEIR POSSIBILITY. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT
ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR
CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATION OR
EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
Governing Law
Both you and IBM consent to the application of the laws of the country in
which you acquired the Machine to govern, interpret, and enforce all of your
and IBM’s rights, duties, and obligations arising from, or relating in any
manner to, the subject matter of this Agreement, without regard to conflict of
law principles.
Part 2 - Country-unique Terms

The following is added to this Section:
Disputes and differences arising out of or in connection with this Agreement
shall be finally settled by arbitration which shall be held in Singapore in
accordance with the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
The arbitrator or arbitrators designated in conformity with those rules shall
have the power to rule on their own competence and on the validity of the
Agreement to submit to arbitration. The arbitration award shall be final and
binding for the parties without appeal and the arbitral award shall be in
writing and set forth the findings of fact and the conclusions of law.
All proceedings shall be conducted, including all documents presented in
such proceedings, in the English language. The number of arbitrators shall be
three, with each side to the dispute being entitled to appoint one arbitrator.
The two arbitrators appointed by the parties shall appoint a third arbitrator
before proceeding upon the reference. The third arbitrator shall act as
chairman of the proceedings. Vacancies in the post of chairman shall be filled
by the president of the ICC. Other vacancies shall be filled by the respective
nominating party. Proceedings shall continue from the stage they were at
when the vacancy occurred.
If one of the parties refuses or otherwise fails to appoint an arbitrator within
30 days of the date the other party appoints its, the first appointed arbitrator
shall be the sole arbitrator, provided that the arbitrator was validly and
properly appointed.
The English language version of this Agreement prevails over any other
language version.
HONG KONG AND MACAU
Governing Law: The following replaces “laws of the country in which you acquired
the Machine” in the first sentence:
laws of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
INDIA
Limitation of Liability: The following replaces items 1 and 2 of this Section:
1. liability for bodily injury (including death) or damage to real property and
tangible personal property will be limited to that caused by IBM’s
negligence;

nonperformance by IBM pursuant to, or in any way related to the subject
of this Statement of Limited Warranty, IBM’s liability will be limited to the

have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or other legislation which
cannot be excluded or limited. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not
apply in respect of any goods which IBM provides, if you require the goods
for the purposes of a business as defined in that Act.
Limitation of Liability: The following is added to this Section:
Where Machines are not acquired for the purposes of a business as defined in
the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, the limitations in this Section are subject
to the limitations in that Act.
PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA (PRC)
Governing Law: The following replaces this Section:
Both you and IBM consent to the application of the laws of the State of New
York (except when local law requires otherwise) to govern, interpret, and
enforce all your and IBM’s rights, duties, and obligations arising from, or
relating in any manner to, the subject matter of this Agreement, without
regard to conflict of law principles.
Any disputes arising from or in connection with this Agreement will first be
resolved by friendly negotiations, failing which either of us has the right to
submit the dispute to the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration
Commission in Beijing, the PRC, for arbitration in accordance with its
arbitration rules in force at the time. The arbitration tribunal will consist of
three arbitrators. The language to be used therein will be English and Chinese.
An arbitral award will be final and binding on all the parties, and will be
enforceable under the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of
Foreign Arbitral Awards (1958).
The arbitration fee will be borne by the losing party unless otherwise
determined by the arbitral award.
During the course of arbitration, this Agreement will continue to be
performed except for the part which the parties are disputing and which is
undergoing arbitration.

THE FOLLOWING TERMS APPLY TO ALL EMEA COUNTRIES:
The terms of this Statement of Limited Warranty apply to Machines purchased
from IBM or an IBM reseller.
Warranty Service:
If you purchase an IBM Machine in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia,
Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania,
Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or
United Kingdom, you may obtain warranty service for that Machine in any of
those countries from either (1) an IBM reseller approved to perform warranty
service or (2) from IBM. If you purchase an IBM Personal Computer Machine
in Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia,
Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Moldova,
Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, or Ukraine, you may
obtain warranty service for that Machine in any of those countries from either
(1) an IBM reseller approved to perform warranty service or (2) from IBM.
If you purchase an IBM Machine in a Middle Eastern or African country, you
may obtain warranty service for that Machine from the IBM entity within the
country of purchase, if that IBM entity provides warranty service in that
country, or from an IBM reseller, approved by IBM to perform warranty
service on that Machine in that country. Warranty service in Africa is available
within 50 kilometers of an IBM authorized service provider. You are
responsible for transportation costs for Machines located outside 50 kilometers
of an IBM authorized service provider.
Governing Law:
The applicable laws that govern, interpret and enforce rights, duties, and
obligations of each of us arising from, or relating in any manner to, the
subject matter of this Statement, without regard to conflict of laws principles,
as well as Country-unique terms and competent court for this Statement are
those of the country in which the warranty service is being provided, except
that in 1) Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, the laws of Austria apply;
2) Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the laws of Finland apply; 3) Algeria, Benin,
Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo,
Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, France, Gabon,
Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania,

Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Liberia,
Malawi, Malta, Mozambique, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Rwanda, Sao
Tome, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, United Arab
Emirates, United Kingdom, West Bank/Gaza, Yemen, Zambia, and Zimbabwe,
this Agreement will be governed by English Law and disputes relating to it
will be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts; and 5) in
Greece, Israel, Italy, Portugal, and Spain any legal claim arising out of this
Statement will be brought before, and finally settled by, the competent court
of Athens, Tel Aviv, Milan, Lisbon, and Madrid, respectively.

The IBM Warranty for Machines: The following replaces the first sentence of the

The warranty for an IBM Machine covers the functionality of the Machine for
its normal use and the Machine’s conformity to its Specifications.

The minimum warranty period for Machines is six months. In case IBM or
your reseller is unable to repair an IBM Machine, you can alternatively ask for
a partial refund as far as justified by the reduced value of the unrepaired
Machine or ask for a cancellation of the respective agreement for such
Machine and get your money refunded.

During the warranty period, transportation for delivery of the failing Machine
to IBM will be at IBM’s expense.
