SPEECH PROCESSOR
SECTION I
DESCRIPTION
The Hy-Gain model 423 Speech Processor is a two channel
unit, each channel having individual gain controls for
optimum voice performance. It is designed to allow either
or both channels to be operated. It wi \I operate in con-
junction with any CB transceiver. The unit is fully solid
state throughout using silicon transistors to give the best
performance.
When in use the Speech Processor wi\I boost the average
output power of the transceiver, thus giving greater range
to the radio. It can be used in either a Base or Mobil e
station, for mobile use a mounting bracket, model 424 is
avaiIable for under!the dash mounti ng.

UNPACKING
Carefully remove the Speech Processor from the packing
carton. Examine it closely for signs of shipping damage.
This equipment has been carefully packed for safe arrival
IF PROPER..Y HANDLEDEN ROlJTE.
The responsi biIity for safe del ivery rests wi th the carrier.
The responsibility in obtaining reimbursement for damage
rest s with YOU. Prompt acti on on your part wi II speed ad-
justments. Our warranty in no way covers malfunction or
damage which is a resul t of improper handl ing by a carrier.
SECTION III
INSTALLATION
Under no ci rcumstances should you return merchanai se to
your dealer before instigating the necessary forms. To do
so can jeopardi ze your investment and the costs of neces-
sary repai rs may be a burden you wi II have to assume.
FiII out the enclosed Warranty Registration Card and maiI
to insure your warranty will be on file.
Save the carton and packing material. You may need it at
a Iater date for storage or shipment.
The 423 Speech Processor may be used in conjunction
with either a Base or Mobile station. The installation
~instructions apply equally except that a mobile mounting
,/bracket, Hy-Gain Model 424, is available for mobile use.
The Speech Processor has provision for two microphones
which may be used individually or both together. Two
four pin microphone plugs are supplied with the unit.
These plugs should be wired to the station microphones.
(The Speech Processor works better if two simi lar micro-
phones are used when dual operation is used with the
unit.) The microphone plug should be wired up as shown
in Figure 1. It may be necessary to open up the micro-
phone to fi nd the necessary wires.

If you have difficulty with the microphone and push-to-
talk circuits, such as not keying or feedback howls, con-
sult a qualified service technician.
To make the Speech Processor more readi Iy adaptabl e to
any CB transceiver a switch on the rear panel is provided
to allow for either Relay or Electronic switching of the
transceiver. Refer to your transceiver manual to determine
whether your transceiver uses relay or electronic switch-
ing. If your manual does not tell you, it is possible to
determine it from the microphone cable. Most microphones
cables are simi lar to the one shown in Figure 1. Connect
an ohm meter across the Push-to-Talk wi res, press the
microphone button, the meter will now show a short cir-
cuit if the unit is wired for rei ay switch ing. If a short
circuit is not shown then the unit is wired for electronic
switching. A double check on this can be done as follows:
Connect the ohm meter between the braid (microphone
shield) and either of the Push-to-Talk wires, one should
show a short circuit and one an open circuit. When the
microphone button pressed they shoul d reverse.
"'""'\
For Base Station use plug the line cord into an AC out
For Mobile use connect+12v DC and a ground to the
+12v DC and -12v DC terminals respectively on the rear
panel. This completes the installation.
SECTION IV
OPERATION
After the install ation is compIete, swi tch the POWER
switch to ON. Set the MIKE gain and the MODULATION
contro Is counter-cl ockwi se. Set the COMPRESSIONcontrol
fully clockwi se. Connect a microphone to MIKE A socket
and swi tch the microphone sel ector switch to A.
Switch on your CB transceiver. If everything is wired cor-
rectly, the tran sceiver shouId be recei vi ng normalIy. Key-
up the transceiver using the Push-to-Talk button on the
microphone. If the transceiver does not go to transmit,
check the wiring of the microphone plug and the. XCVR
microphone cable.
To set up the Speech Processor, switch the COMPRESSOR
switch to IN. Advance the MIKE A gain control clockwise
until it is half way open. Talk into the microphone and
advance the COMPRESSIONcontrol counter-clockwi se unti I
the LEVEL meter starts reading about 4 on the scale. (The
MIKE A gain control may have to be advanced further clock-
wise to achieve this.)
The COMPRESSIONcontrol can be adjusted for different
amounts of compression. More compression (a higher
reading on the LEVEL meter) gives more punch to a signal
but at'so increa-!;es distortion. A level must be chosen for
your own preference.
Once the COMPRESSIONis set, advance the MODULATION
control clockwise. This will allow the processed audio
to modulate your transceiver. This control is best set
using a modulation meter such as is in the Hy-Gain model
421 Power Meter. In the absence of a modulation meter
the control can be set using a series of on-the-air tests.
Once the amount of COMPRESSIONand MODULATION is
set using your microphone in position A an additional
microphone can be plugged into MIKE B and its gain con-
trol set to give the same performance without further ad-
justment of either of the COMPRESSIONor MODULATION
contro
J.
With the microphone selector switch set in the center posi-
tion (A&'B) it is possible for two people to talk at o~
with either one contrbll ing the Push-to-Talk function. .
As stated earl ier the amounts of COMPRESSIONand MODU-
LATION is one of personal preference and should be set
accordingly. More compression wi II cause a higher level
on the audio LEVEL meter.

Proper packing normally avoids this trouble.

The exception to this is when there is no other means (APO
FPO, etc.) of shipment than parcel post, and then we will
ship by this means with your written agreement that you
assume any loss over that which the carrier will insure.
COD shipments cannot be made to APO-FPO addresses.
Replacement part price quotes will be furnished on request
