Quidway® NetEngine 80E Core Router
System Architecture
The Quidway® NetEngine 80E core routers (“NE80E” hereinafter) are an enhanced series of Huawei NE80 routers and can provide 10G wire-speed interfaces. It is located at the core of the IP backbone network, IP MAN and other large-scale IP networks. It can be networked with core routers of the NE5000E and NE40E series to form an IP network solution of integral architecture and clear hierarchy.
The NE80E now provides 640Gbps switching capacity, 320Gbps interface capacity and 400Mpps packet forwarding rate. In the near future, these figures may increase greatly. It provides 22 slots in total, two of which for Main Processing Unit (MPU) (working in the 1:1 backup mode), four for Switching Fabric Unit (SFU) (working in the 1+3 backup mode) and the left for service boards.
Architecture
Based on distributed hardware forwarding and non-blocking switching technology, the NE80E features carrier-class reliability, line rate forwarding, well proved QoS mechanism, rich variety of service processing capabilities and excellent scalability. Therefore it can meet the raising demand of data and Internet services for equipment on the backbone network.

Boards of the NE80E include MPU, SFU, service boards and many Line Processing Units (LPU). Key components such as MPU, SFU, fan and power are of redundancy design, which helps improve the reliability of the whole system. The interface types of LPUs include FE, GE, 10GE, POS, CPOS, ATM and RPR.
The logical architecture of the NE80E falls into data plane, control management plane and monitoring plane. Functions of the three planes are described in the figure below.
Logical architecture of NE80E
z The data plane completes high-speed data packet processing and internal non-blocking
switching, including packet encapsulation/decapsulation, IPv4/MPLS forwarding processing, QoS and packet scheduling, internal high speed switching and various statistics.
z The control and management plane completes system control and management functions. It is
the nerve center of the entire system. The control and management unit completes functions such as protocol and signaling processing, system status configuration and maintenance management as well as system status reporting and control.
z The monitoring plane independently completes system environment monitoring, including
voltage detection, system power on/off control, temperature detection and fan control to ensure the safe and stable operation of the system. It isolates the fault in time when a unit is faulty, thus guaranteeing the normal operation of the other system components.
