Quidway® NetEngine 80 Core Router
System Architecture
The Quidway® NetEngine 80 core router (abbreviated to NE80) is a 5th generation high-end router product launched by Huawei in orientation to carrier-class operation networks and backbone networks. It is mainly applied in the key positions of IP backbone networks, IP MANs and various large-scale IP networks. The NE80 provides multiple network solutions, and can also work with other Huawei products to provide integrated solutions.
The NE80 has the switching capacity of 128 Gbps, the backplane capacity of 256 Gbps, and the packet forwarding rate of 96 Mpps. The NE80 has 20 slots: two for MPUs (1:1 backup), two for NETBs (1:1 backup) and 16 service slots, providing line cards and service interfaces ranging from 64 Kbps to 2.5 Gbps.
Architecture
The NE80 is based on a distributed forwarding architecture and adopts the passive backplane design. All Line Processing Units (LPUs) are configured with independent CPU, NP and Physical Interface Card (PIC), greatly improving the processing performance and scalability of the whole system.

The NE80 provides the following major boards: Main Processing Unit (MPU), Switching Network Board (NETB), Clock Board (CLK) and various LPUs. The key parts such as MPU, NETB/CLK, fan and power supply adopt redundancy design, improving the reliability of the whole system. The interface types of the LPU include Ethernet interfaces, E1, POS, CPOS, ATM, RPR, and NAT.
The whole system is divided up into three logical planes: forwarding plane, control plan and monitoring plane. The NE80 realizes forwarding and control separation as well as routing and switching separation.
z The data plane completes high-speed data packet processing and internal non-blocking
switching, including packet encapsulation/decapsulation, IPv4/MPLS forwarding processing, QoS and packet scheduling, internal high speed switching and various statistics.
z The control and management plane completes system control and management functions. It is
the nerve center of the entire system. The control and management unit completes functions such as protocol and signaling processing, system status configuration and maintenance management as well as system status reporting and control.
z The monitoring plane independently completes system environment monitoring, including
voltage detection, system power on/off control, temperature detection and fan control to ensure the safe and stable operation of the system. It isolates the fault in time when a unit is faulty, thus guaranteeing the normal operation of the other system components.
