User guide
Before you do anything else, please read this
Charge the battery
The battery in your phone hasn’t been charged yet. While your phone is charging, it’s important that you do not remove the battery pack. Doing so can damage your phone. Also, please don’t try to take your phone apart. (If you do, it may invalidate your warranty.)
Choose a rate plan wisely
Know about privacy laws
Some countries have strict laws about how and when you can record phone conversations. For example, you may need to tell the person you’re speaking to before you start recording. It’s a good idea to find out what the laws are where you live before you use your phone’s recording feature.
And finally, a few important words from our legal team (LIMITATION OF DAMAGES)
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall HTC or its affiliates be liable to you, any user, or third party for any indirect, special, consequential, incidental or punitive damages of any kind, arising in contract, tort, or otherwise, including, but not limited to, injury, loss of revenue, loss of goodwill, loss of business opportunity, loss of data, and/or loss of profits, regardless of the foreseeability thereof or whether HTC or its affiliates have been advised of the possibility of such damages. And in no event shall the total liability of HTC or its affiliates exceed the amount received from you, regardless of the legal theory under which the cause of action is brought. The foregoing does not affect any statutory rights which may not be disclaimed.
Please also read the Safety and regulatory guide that is included in the box for information on the proper usage of your phone to prevent injuries and to avoid damaging your phone. You can also refer to this guide for regulatory information about your phone.
You can also visit www.htc.com/support to download the Safety and regulatory guide and to access other helpful resources for your phone.
Conventions used in this guide
In this user guide, we use the following symbols to indicate useful and important information:
This is a note. A note often gives additional information, such as what happens on your phone when you choose to do or not to do a certain action. A note also provides information that may only be applicable to some situations.
This is a tip. A tip gives you an alternative way to do a particular step or procedure, or lets you know of an option that you may find helpful.
This indicates that something is very important. Important information is something that you need to do in order to accomplish a certain task or to get a phone feature to work properly.
This provides safety precaution information, that is, information that you need to be careful about to prevent potential problems when using your phone.

Battery

Your phone uses a rechargeable battery. Please use only original batteries and accessories that came with your phone or replacements that we recommend.
How long the battery can last before it needs recharging depends on how you use your phone. Among these are the phone features and accessories you use (for example, leaving your Bluetooth connection always on uses more power). Long phone calls and frequent web browsing use up much battery. Also, consider your location: poor signal strength from your mobile network and extreme temperature make the battery work harder.

Removing the battery

Right after you take your phone out from the box for the first time, don’t forget to remove the thin film wrapped around the battery that’s inside your phone.
1. Take the back cover off. See "Removing the back cover" to find out how.
2. With your thumb or finger, lift the battery compartment cover off from the small opening on the left side of your phone.
3. Pull the battery out from the battery compartment.
Basics 13

Inserting the battery

1. Remove the back cover. See "Removing the back cover" to find out how.
2. Insert the contacts side of the battery first and then gently push the battery into place.

Charging the battery

The battery is partially charged when shipped. Before you turn on and start using your phone, it is recommended that you charge the battery. Some batteries perform best after several full charge/discharge cycles.
Do not remove the battery from the phone while you are charging it using the power or car adapter.
1. Plug the power adapter into the USB connector of your phone.
2. Plug in the power adapter to an electrical outlet to start charging the battery.
As the battery is being charged, the notification LED shows a solid red light. The light turns to solid green when the phone is fully charged.
When you charge the battery while the phone is on, the charging battery icon ( ) is displayed in your phone’s status bar. After the battery has been fully charged, the charging battery icon turns to a full battery icon ( ).
As a safety precaution, the battery stops charging when it overheats.

You can follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup, or skip the setup and do it at another time. Just follow the onscreen instructions and you’ll be up and running with your phone in no time.
Some features that need to connect to the Internet such as location-based services and auto-sync of your online accounts may incur extra data fees from T-Mobile. Don’t worry. You can enable or disable them in your phone’s settings as you go along later on. To find out how, see the Settings chapter.

The Home screen also lets you add more items to the Home screen. Add items like application icons, shortcuts, folders, and widgets to give you instant access to information and applications that you use most often. To find out how to personalize your Home screen, see "Personalizing".

Extended Home screen

As you start to do more things with your phone, you might find that one Home screen is not enough. No problem. You can use up to four extra screens. It should be plenty.
Slide your finger horizontally to the left or right and you’ll discover more space for adding icons, widgets, and more.

What is Smart dial?
The phone dialer’s Smart Dial feature makes it quick and easy for you to place a call. Simply enter the phone number or first few letters of the person’s name you want to call. Smart Dial automatically searches and filters your contacts list (stored on your phone, SIM card, and online accounts such as Google Account and Exchange ActiveSync) and the phone numbers from the call log.
For example, if you tap number “2” on the phone dialer, which is associated with [a, b, and c] on the phone dialer, contact names such as the following will be considered matches: “Ben Miller”, “George Adams”, “John-Carter”, “Carter, Ellen”, “Dixon, Allan”, “Thomas_Clark”, “JaneCampbell”.
If the matching list is long and you want to narrow down the search further, enter another letter. Using the same example above, if you continue to tap “3” which is associated with [d, e, f], the matching list will be narrowed down to the following names: “Ben Miller”, “George Adams”, “Carter, Ellen”, “Dixon, Allan”.
