Release Notes – Enterprise Volume Manager (Multi-OS) Host Agent Version 2.0D for HP-UX
First Edition (August 2002)
Part Number: AA–RTBAA–TE
These Release Notes cover the following major topics:
•Hardware and Software Compatibility, page 4
•Limitations and Known Issues, page 6
Intended Audience
This document is intended for customers who purchased EVM V2.0D and for HP
authorized service providers responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining
systems that include EVM server and EVM host agent software.
EVM Documentation
EVM documentation includes documents distributed through an initial purchase of
EVM V2.0D (contained in an EVM documentation kit). Refer to the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Volume Manager (Multi-OS) Version 2.0D Read Me First
(AV–RR0QB–TE) for a list of these documents and document part numbers.
All EVM documentation (except online Help/User Guides) and additional technical
documentation (such as white papers) are located at the following HP EVM website:
The following sections identify hardware and software that support this EVM host
agent. Topics include:
•Platform Specific Components, page 4
•Platform Specific Considerations, page 5
Platform Specific Components
Platform specific components applicable to this EVM host agent:
•Operating System Version Support
•File System Support
•Cluster Functionality
•StorageWorks Secure Path
•FCA/HBA Compatibility
Operating System Version Support
This release of the EVM host agent supports HP-UX Version 11.0 and 11i.
File System Support
This EVM host agent supports the Hierachial File System (HFS) and the VERITAS
File System (VxFS).
Cluster Functionality
This EVM host agent does not support MC Service Guard cluster functionality on
HP-UX hosts. Cluster support will be added in a future release.
StorageWorks Secure Path
This EVM host agent version supports and requires Secure Path Version 3.0A. HSG80
array controller transparent failover mode is not supported. All configurations must
include Secure Path, and if HSG80 controllers are used, they must be in multibus
failover mode.
This EVM host agent supports the HP A5158A and A6795A Fibre Channel host bus
adapters (FCA/HBA).
Platform Specific Considerations
The following issues are specific to the HP-UX platform and should be taken into
account when planning EVM job operations:
•Initial LUN Requirement for HSG80 Controllers
•Default Configuration Supports 10 Volume Groups
Initial LUN Requirement for HSG80 Controllers
The HSG80 array controller does not maintain active or “online” connections to an
HP-UX host unless a LUN is presented to that host at all times. The lack of online
connections to a host can result in EVM job failures with an error message of “No
usable mount connections found.” To prevent this problem, make sure that at least one
LUN is presented to all HP-UX hosts to act as a mount-on host for EVM jobs.
Default Configuration Supports 10 Volume Groups
for HP-UX
With the default configuration, HP-UX supports a maximum of 10 volume groups.
Because each EVM replication job creates a new volume group on the mount-on host,
systems at or near the maximum number might experience job failures. To prevent this
problem, use the “kmtune” utility to increase the number of supported volume groups
to an appropriate level.
This section is an extension of a similar section in the HP StorageWorks Enterprise
Volume Manager (Multi-OS) Version 2.0D Network Administration Guide
(AA–RR0VB–TE) and can help avoid problems while using EVM V2.0D. These
topics are grouped in the following categories:
•Limitations, page 6
•Known Issues, page 10
Limitations
EVM limitations include the following topics:
•RTE/Browser Versions to Correct GUI Problems
•Logical Volume Manager Support
•BCV Persistence Across Host Reboots
•Mounting Multiple Logical Volumes per Volume Group
•International Language Support
•30-Minute Spawn Process Timeout
RTE/Browser Versions to Correct GUI Problems
EVM requires the Java runtime environment (RTE) plug-in version to be installed on
any host being used to view the EVM GUI (refer to the EVM Network Administration
Guide for a list of supported browser and RTE versions). This RTE version appears to
be compatible with most Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator browser
versions, but some combinations result in unusual GUI behavior. Symptoms include:
1
•Job names being replaced by the word “null.”
•Unresponsiveness to double-clicking or right-clicking.
•Distorted displays and other abnormalities.
If any of these problems are encountered:
1. Verify that only the required RTE version is installed on the host.
2. Remove any other versions, if necessary.
1.Hereafter referred to as EVM Network Administration Guide.
3. Try a different browser version, if the problem persists.
In most cases, these browser/RTE combinations display the EVM GUI correctly.
However, variations in browser and Java technology on the various platforms can
cause some GUI elements to display incorrectly. For best results, HP recommends
using a Microsoft Windows platform from which to browse to the EVM GUI.
Logical Volume Manager Support
This EVM host agent supports the Hewlett-Packard Logical Volume Manager (LVM).
The following limitations apply to this support:
•No More Than 128 Logical Volumes per Volume Group
•No More Than 16 Disks per Volume Group
•One Volume Group per Job
•Volume Group Is the Minimum Unit of Replication
•Current Mapfile Requirement
•StorageWorks Storage System Requirement
•Unit Style Replication Not Supported with Volume Groups
Limitations and Known Issues
for HP-UX
No More Than 128 Logical Volumes per Volume Group
The EVM host agent has been tested with, and supports up to, 128 logical volumes per
volume group. Configurations that use more than this number may not work properly.
No More Than 16 Disks per Volume Group
The EVM host agent has been tested with, and supports up to, 16 physical volumes per
volume group. Configurations that use more than this number may not work properly.
One Volume Group per Job
This EVM host agent supports one volume group per EVM job. Replicating multiple
volume groups requires the use of multiple EVM jobs.
The data for a given logical volume can be located on any or all of the physical disks
in a volume group. As a result, a hardware level replication of the logical volume (like
that performed by EVM) must copy all of the physical volumes in the volume group in
order to capture all of the data. This limitation also applies to logical volumes that
have been extended to specific disks.
Current Mapfile Requirement
EVM uses a mapfile to import a replicated HP-UX volume group. The mapfile defines
the logical volume name to number association for all of the logical volumes in a
volume group. Without this information, the system assigns default names to all of the
logical volumes in the replicated volume group and the original names are lost.
Without the original name, associating a source volume with a replicated copy is
difficult.
EVM includes a script named Generate_Mapfiles.ksh, which generates a mapfile for
each volume group. This script closes all the logical volumes (unmounts the
filesystems) and then deactivates the volume group before creating the mapfile. After
creating the mapfile, the script reactivates the volume group and reopens the logical
volumes. This process completes within two minutes for most volume groups. During
this time period, the volume group and all logical volumes contained within the group
are unavailable. This mapping process should be scheduled, as needed, to minimize
any impact to normal operations.
A mapfile must be created for each volume group that will be replicated using EVM.
If the logical volume configuration for a given volume group changes through the
addition or deletion of a logical volume, an updated mapfile must be generated using
this same process. Volume groups with invalid mapfiles are not displayed on the EVM
Resource page and cannot be used in EVM jobs.
EVM does not automatically display HP-UX volume groups on the EVM Resources
page. To display a volume group on this page, the mapfile for this volume group must
be created or updated. Refer to the EVM Network Administration Guide for the
procedure that makes selected HP-UX volume groups display on this page.
StorageWorks Storage System Requirement
All physical volumes that comprise a volume group must be located exclusively on
either HSG80 or HSV110 storage volumes. EVM cannot replicate a volume group that
does not reside entirely on one of these two types of storage systems.
Unit Style Replication Not Supported with Volume Groups
Many EVM job operations provide a choice between two syntax styles:
•Unit syntax—replication sources are specified in terms of the applicable storage
system and unit number. This method does not provide any mechanism for
quiescing a volume group or gathering the meta data necessary to reconstruct the
volume group on the mount-on host.
Unit style replication is suitable only for non-LVM devices.
•Volume syntax—replication sources are specified in terms of the host on which
they reside and the logical volume name. This method allows EVM to quiesce the
volume group being replicated and reconstructs the volume group on the
mount-on host.
BCV Persistence Across Host Reboots
Persisting a device across a HP-UX host reboot requires the operating system kernel to
be rebuilt. Due to the potentially disruptive nature of this operation, EVM does not
rebuild the kernel. As a result, a Business Continuance Volume (BCV) mounted by
EVM does not persist across a host reboot.
Mounting Multiple Logical Volumes per Volume Group
An EVM job automatically mounts only the logical volume specified during job
creation. A limitation in the EVM job creation interface prevents more than one
logical volume from being specified. In many cases, mounting more than one logical
volume per volume group is desirable. In these cases, HP recommends adding a
LAUNCH operation in the EVM job immediately following the MOUNT operation.
Use the LAUNCH operation to execute a simple shell script on the mount-on host to
mount any additional logical volumes as desired.
International Language Support
To use EVM host agents with UNIX operating systems in non-English environments,
set “LANG=C; export LANG” in the root profile.
By default, the EVM host agent is configured to time out and to report an error if a
process spawned by a SUSPEND, RESUME, or LAUNCH operation does not
complete within 30 minutes. In some cases, the spawned process can require more
than 30 minutes to complete. When this situation occurs:
1. Modify the PIPE_READ_TIMEOUT value in the sb.ini file, on the appropriate
EVM host agent computer, to reflect the desired value (in seconds).
2. Restart the EVM daemon on the EVM host agent computer to allow the changes
to take effect.
Known Issues
Known issues include the following topics:
•“Cannot convert string” Error Message
•Dual Netscape Version Requirement for HP-UX Host Browsing
“Cannot convert string” Error Message
In Netscape 4.7x+, a dialog window with the following error message may display if
the X font server is not running:
Warning: Cannot convert string
“-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal--*-140-75-75-p-*-iso8859-1” to
type FontStruct.
If you find this and other error/warning messages inconvenient, redirect them to the
console by adding X user preference strings to the X Resource Database. One way to
accomplish this task is to add the following two lines to the user $(HOME)/.Xdefaults
file:
Subsequently, run the command, xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults and restart
Netscape, if necessary. Refer to the release notes for runtime plugin 1.3.1_02 for
further information on fonts in the HP-UX Runtime for Java and the X Font Server.
The release notes can be found at the following HP website:

Dual Netscape Version Requirement for HP-UX Host Browsing
If browsing to the EVM V2.0D GUI from an HP-UX computer with HP-UX 11.00 or
11i, a special configuration regarding the Netscape browser and associated Java
runtime environment (RTE) is required. This special configuration requires the
installation of both Netscape 4.7x and Netscape 6.2.x on the same HP-UX host.
NOTE: Complete the procedure in this section only if an HP-UX computer will be used for
browsing to the EVM V2.0D GUI.
