Standard Features
The features described in this section are standard on all Compaq ProLiant DL580
Generation 2 servers, unless otherwise specified.
Processors
Hyper-Threading, a technology developed by Intel, improves the performance of
IA-32 processors when executing multiple-processor (MP) capable operating systems
and multi-threaded applications. With this technology, one physical processor looks
like two logical processors to the operating system and applications. The two logical
processors are able to execute two separate tasks (or code streams called threads)
concurrently by using shared hardware resources.
Hyper-Threading technology is designed to improve the performance of IA-32
processors by using the multi-threaded nature of contemporary operating systems and
server applications in such a way as to increase the use of the on-chip execution
resources available in the Intel NetBurst micro-architecture. The integrated cache
subsystem results in reduced memory access times and increased throughput and
performance of the memory subsystem. Specifically, integrated Level 3 cache, which
is only available on the Xeon Processor MP, provides a high-bandwidth path to
memory, increasing throughput for large server workloads.
Server Features
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server features the following advanced processor
technologies:
• Support for up to four Intel Xeon Processors MP
— Integrated cache subsystem (Level 2 Advanced Transfer cache and Integrated
Level 3 cache)
— Intel NetBurst micro-architecture
• Hyper-Threading technology
• 400-MHz front-side bus

Server Features
Memory
The Compaq ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server provides double data rate (DDR)
synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) that can improve memory clock speed to at
least 200 MHz. It activates output on both the rising and falling edge of the system
clock rather than on just the rising edge, potentially doubling output. The ProLiant
DL580 Generation 2 server features the following advanced memory technologies:
• Support for up to 32 GB of industry-standard PC1600 registered ECC DDR
SDRAM memory with two memory boards installed
• ECC and Advanced ECC memory for single-bit detection and multi-bit memory
error correction
— Hot-add memory capabilities with future software releases
For more information on Compaq Advanced Memory Protection, refer to Chapter 6,
“Memory.”
1-6 Compaq ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 Server Setup and Installation Guide
PCI-X Expansion Slots
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server offers four 64-bit, 100-MHz, peered PCI-X
buses that ensure optimal availability and performance. The server provides support
for six expansion slots (3.3V keyed) – four hot-plug slots and two non-hot-plug slots.
• PCI-X technology
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server features six expansion slots operating
across three buses that support the latest industry-standard technology, Peripheral
Component Interconnect Extended (PCI-X). This follow-on technology increases
the data throughput capacity of PCI technology and minimizes bottlenecks
associated with high-bandwidth devices, such as:
— Gigabit Ethernet NICs
— Fiber channel controllers
— Compaq Smart Array Controllers
The fourth bus is dedicated to support the embedded Smart Array 5i Plus
Controller.
• Load balancing and PCI-X Hot Plug
Server Features
The server’s PCI-X expansion slots operate across three separate buses to enable
load balancing across multiple expansion boards. Four hot-plug slots provide
enhanced availability.
Network Interface Controller
The standard slot-based network interface controller (NIC) provided with the
ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server has the following features:
• Autosense Ethernet 802.3 standard (copper)
• PCI-X, 64-bit/133-MHz (compatible with 64-bit/66-MHz and 32-bit/33-MHz)
• Wake On Lan (WOL) support
• Pre-eXecution Environment (PXE) support
• Dual address cycles (DAC)
• PCI-X Hot Plug support
• Network fault tolerance

Server Features
System Health Indicators
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server contains several sets of LEDs that indicate
the status of hardware components and settings. A new feature is the QuickFind
Diagnostic Display. These LEDs, located on the front access panel, enable you to
quickly diagnos a problem with a component in the server simply by referring to the
access panel. The system is monitored by internal and external LEDs, including:
• Component LEDs visible on the front of the server
— Power On/Standby button and LED
— Internal health
— External health
— Hard drives
— UID (Unit Identification) LED and button
— Power supplies
• Component LEDs visible on the rear of the server
— Slot-based NIC activity
— Hot-plug expansion slots (power and fault status)
— UID (Unit Identification) LED and button
— iLO management NIC activity
• QuickFind Diagnostic Display (component LEDs visible at the top of the front
access panel)
— Processors
— Processor Power Modules (PPMs)
— Memory board
— PCI-X expansion slots (speed, power, and fault status)
— Fans
— System interlock
— Thermtrip
For more information about system LEDs, refer to Appendix E, “System LEDs and
Switches.”
