Product Overview
The HP JetDirect 300X and 170X OfficeConnect Print
Servers (J4101B and J4102B respectively) send data to
printers at speeds of up to 360 kilobytes per second,
which is as fast or faster than many internal print
servers. These external print servers enhance
workgroup capability by letting you place your printer
or plotter at a convenient location directly on the
network, and by increasing network printer
performance and management.
HP JetDirect OfficeConnect Print Server
Use the HP JetDirect OfficeConnect Print Server to connect
a printer or plotter to your network.
The HP JetDirect 300X OfficeConnect Print Server
provides connectivity to 10Base-T and 100Base-TX
networks. The HP JetDirect 170X OfficeConnect
Print Server provides connectivity to 10Base-T
networks. With either print server, you can connect
one printer or plotter with a parallel port to the
network. Each print server has one high-speed,
bidirectional parallel port (IEEE 1284 standard) that
supports multiple network operating systems (NOSs).
Network Management
The print server supports the Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP), which enables remote
printer management and troubleshooting. A standard
SNMP agent resides on the print server. Any standard
SNMP-based application can be used to access and
manage the print server.
Peripherals connected to the print server appear as
intelligent nodes on the network and are accessible
through various diagnostic utilities using the SNMP/IPX
and SNMP/IP protocols. The print server also collects
network statistics and error messages to aid in
network management and troubleshooting.

Network Printing Basics
Networks consist of computers connected together to
share information and resources, such as printers.
There are two ways to share printers on a network:
Client-Server and Peer-to-Peer.
Network Printing Configurations
On a client-server network, client computers send
print jobs to
the use of each printer. This is typically used in
medium to large networks where dedicated servers
are used to manage printing needs of many users.
Client-server networks use network operating systems
(NOSs) such as Novell NetWare and Microsoft
Windows NT or 2000 Server.
Peer-to-peer printing
Client-Server printing
dedicated server
computers that control
Page 9
Network Printing Basics3
On a peer-to-peer network, dedicated servers are
not used. Instead, each computer is configured to
send print jobs to the printer directly. This is more
suitable for smaller networks. On peer-to-peer
networks, users configure their Microsoft Windows
95, 2000, or NT systems to print directly to the
printer. Note that peer-to-peer printing can be
configured on a client-server network. For example, a
small workgroup might use peer-to-peer printing even
though it is connected to an enterprise-wide clientserver network.
Regardless of the network type (client-server or peerto-peer), your computers and printers must use a
common language, or network protocol to
communicate with each other. The most common
protocols are
popular by Novell NetWare networks, and
(Internet Packet Exchange), made
IPX
TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol),
made popular by the Internet. The print server
supports these and other popular network protocols.
For More Information
For more information about general network printing
and other network information, see the
3Com OfficeConnect Network Assistant CD-ROM
shipped with your print server.
Configuration for Network Printing
■
If you are on a Novell NetWare (client-server)
network, you can configure the NetWare server
and the print server for network printing using
HP JetDirect software. Then configure the network
clients for printing.
■
If you are setting up client-server printing on a
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT network,
you configure your Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT
server for printing using HP JetDirect software,
then share the printer with client computers.
■
If you are setting up peer-to-peer printing on a
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT network,
you simply configure each Windows 95, 98, 2000,
or NT client to print directly to the printer using
HP JetDirect software.

HP Internet Printer Connection Software for
Windows NT (For J4101B only)
You can now send high-quality print jobs over the
Internet directly to any printer that is equipped with
an HP JetDirect print server that supports Internet
Printing Protocol (IPP). Simply use the HP Internet
Printer Connection software for Windows NT or 2000
to set up your system.
To set up a print path from a Windows NT or 2000
system to an Internet printer, use one of the following
methods:
■
Use a supported Web Browser (such as Netscape
Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer ) to view
the embedded web server on the HP JetDirect print
server. Contact your network administrator to get
the IP address or URL of the printer and browse to
,
the print servers web page. Click on the
Printing Install Wizard
link. This link executes an
Internet
installation wizard that automatically sets up a
print path between your computer and the printer.
■
Download the HP Internet Printer Connection
software from HP Customer Care online at
http://www.hp.com/go/print_connect.
To install the software and set up the print path to
the printer, follow the instructions provided with
the software. Contact your network administrator
to get the IP address or URL of the printer to
complete the setup.
The network administrator must configure the firewall
to accept IPP requests before inbound requests from
the software can travel through the firewall. There is
no security implementation.

HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway for NDPS
NDPS (Novell Distributed Print Services) is a printing
architecture developed by Novell, in partnership with
Hewlett-Packard. NDPS simplifies and streamlines the
administration of network printing. It eliminates the
need to set up and link print queues, printer objects,
and print servers. NDPS is managed through a
NetWare Administrator snap-in which allows the
administrator to manage networked printers within
the NetWare 4.11, intraNetWare, and NetWare 5
environments from a single location.
The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway is an NLM developed by
HP to provide functionality and compatibility with
Novell's NDPS. It seamlessly integrates HP JetDirectconnected printers into the NDPS environment. Using
the HP Gateway, an administrator can view statistics,
configure gateway settings, and configure printing for
HP JetDirect-connected printers.

such programs that are active on your Mac OS
computer before proceeding with the installation
process.
1Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2In the
HP Installer
window, double-click the installa-
tion icon for the software in the language you want.
3Follow the instructions on the screen.
For more information about configuring your printer
driver, see the online documentation provided on the
CD-ROM that came with the printer.
Configuring the Printer
The HP LaserJet Utility allows printer settings such as
printer name and preferred zone to be configured
from your Mac OS system. Hewlett-Packard
recommends that only network administrators use the
printer configuration capabilities of this utility.
If this printer is to be serviced by a print spooler, set

The HP LaserJet Utility allows you to select a preferred
zone for your printer on a Phase 2 EtherTalk network.
Instead of your printer remaining on the default zone,
which is set by the router, this utility lets you select
the zone on which your printer appears. The zones on
which your printer can reside are limited by your
network configuration.
The HP LaserJet Utility only
enables you to select a zone that is already
configured for your network.
Zones are groups of computers, printers, and other
AppleTalk devices. They can be grouped by physical
location (for example, Zone A may contain all the
printers on the network in building A). They may also
be grouped logically (for example, all printers used in
the finance department).

Viewing the Embedded Web Server29
After an IP address is established on the print server,
perform the following steps:
Before you can use the embedded web server, the
print server must be configured with an IP address.
There are many ways to configure an IP address on
the print server. For example, you can
automatically
configure IP parameters over the network using BootP
(Bootstrap Protocol) or DHCP (Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol) each time the printer is turned
on. Or, you can
manually
configure IP parameters
using the printers control panel (for selected printers),
Telnet, HP Web JetAdmin or other management
software.
If the print server does not receive its IP configuration
within two minutes, a default IP address is
automatically assigned: 192.0.0.192. This address is
not a valid IP address for your network but can be
used to initially access the print server. However, to
use the default IP address, you must temporarily set
up your system with the same IP
network number
or
establish a route to it.
1Run a supported version of your web browser.
2Enter the IP address of the print server as the URL (the
one displayed in the following screenshot is an example only).

FT P P
RINTING
Introduction
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a basic TCP/IP
connectivity utility to transfer data between systems.
FTP printing is a way to use FTP to send print files
from a client system to an HP JetDirect-connected
printer. In an FTP printing session, the client connects
and sends a print file to the HP JetDirect FTP server
which in turn passes the print file to the printer.
The HP JetDirect FTP server can be enabled or disabled
through a configuration utility, such as Telnet.
Requirements
FTP printing requires the following:
■
HP JetDirect print servers with firmware version
x.08.xx or later.
■
TCP/IP client systems with FTP that complies with
RFC 959.
For the most recent list of tested systems, visit the
HP Customer Care Online at
www.hp.com/support/net_printing.
Page 38

5: FTP P
RINTING
Print Files
The HP JetDirect FTP server transfers print files to the
printer but does not interpret them. For proper
printing, print files must be in a language recognized
by the printer (such as PostScript, PCL, or unformatted
text). For formatted print jobs, you must first print to
a file from your application using the driver for the
selected printer, then transfer the print file to the
printer through an FTP session. For formatted print
files, use binary (image) type transfers.
Using FTP Printing
FTP Connections
Similar to standard FTP file transfers, FTP printing uses
two TCP connections: a control connection and a data
connection.
Control Connection
Using standard FTP, a control connection is opened by
the client to the FTP server on the HP JetDirect print
server. FTP control connections are used to exchange
commands between the client and the FTP server. The
HP JetDirect print server supports up to three control
connections (or FTP sessions) simultaneously. If the
number of allowed connections is exceeded, a
message indicating that service is not available will be
displayed.
FTP control connections use TCP port 21. Once an FTP
session is opened, it remains active until either the
client closes the connection or the connection is idle
for 900 seconds (15 minutes).
Page 39
Using FTP Printing33
Data Connection
A second connection, a data connection, is created
each time a file is transferred between the client and
the FTP server. The client controls the creation of a
data connection by issuing the commands that require
a data connection (such as FTP
ls, dir
or
put
commands).
Although the
ls
and
dir
commands are always
accepted, the HP JetDirect FTP server supports only
one data connection for printing at a time.
The transmission mode for an FTP data connection
with the HP JetDirect print server is always in stream
mode, which marks the end-of-file by closing the data
connection.
Once a data connection is established, the file transfer
type (ASCII or binary) can be specified. Although
some clients may attempt to autonegotiate a transfer
type, the default is ASCII. To specify the transfer type,
enter the
bin
or
ascii
command at the
ftp
prompt.
FTP Login
To start an FTP session, enter the following command
from a MS-DOS or UNIX command prompt:
ftp <IP address>
<IP address>
where
is the valid IP address or node
name configured for the HP JetDirect print server.
If the connection is successful, the HP JetDirect model
and firmware version will be displayed.
After a successful connection, the user is prompted
for a login name and password. The default is the
clients login name. The JetDirect FTP server will allow
any user name. Passwords are ignored.
If login is successful, a message
230
will be displayed
on the client system. In addition, the available
HP JetDirect ports for printing will be displayed.
HP JetDirect external print servers with multiple ports
will display all available ports, with Port1 the default
port. To change ports, use the FTP
cd
(change
directory) command. For an example of a successful
login, see Example of an FTP Session.

Novell NetWare (non-NDPS)
The following steps list a general process for
troubleshooting printer-related network problems
using JetAdmin on a Novell NetWare network.
1Log on as Supervisor or Admin at any workstation
before using JetAdmin:
2Verify that the printer appears in the HP JetAdmin
software.
3If the printer does not appear in the main window of
the HP JetAdmin software, click
the main window, then click

4If the printer does not appear in steps 1 or 2, the
170X was not able to send a SAP (Service Advertising
Protocol) request to the file server, or the print server
did not respond to a roll call. This can be caused by a
variety of things, but usually relates to cable or
topology issues. Try the following:
■
First of all, check the SAP table on the file server
with the Display Servers command.
■
Refresh JetAdmin.
■
Verify network cables, connections, and router
configurations.
■
Verify the print server is receiving power and the
printer is online.
■
Disconnect the DC power cord from the print
server and then reconnect it. See if the print server
shows up in JetAdmin.
■
Select
View
and the
tab and make sure the
Filters
intended print server is not excluded (such as, by
printer model, printer address, network, printer
capabilities, etc.).
■
Check the print servers configuration page for any
network errors. (See page 45 for error messages.)

1Are any of the queues to be served by that printer
disabled?
Enable or eliminate queues and try printing again.
2Is the data being sent to the printer?
Verify the print queue is not on hold and that the
correct print server is the only one servicing the
queue. Use PCONSOLE (see the NetWare
documentation) to verify the configuration.
3Is there an INITIALIZING message for IPX/SPX status on
the print servers configuration page?
Wait several minutes and print another configuration
page. If the message persists, make sure any file
servers, bridges, or routers on your network are
operating correctly and make sure the network is
correctly wired. If the message persists, there may be
an unsupported frame type on your network.
4Does HP JetAdmin report Unable to Connect to
Print Server?
Use HP JetAdmin or PCONSOLE to confirm that the
print server and print queues are configured correctly.
This includes verifying the print server name, remote
printer number, remote printer configuration, and the
queue name.
5Can you see the print server on the network using
HP JetAdmin?
Verify the frame type on the print server configuration
page. The print server supports the following frame
types: ETHERNET_802.2, ETHERNET_802.3,
ETHERNET_II, and ETHERNET_SNAP.
Workstation Checklist
1Is the workstation running a supported client for
Novell NetWare connectivity?
Make sure a supported Novell NetWare client is
installed and running on the workstation. See the
Readme file for JetAdmin for more information.
2Is your software application correctly configured to
print to the network printer?
Make sure your software application is printing to the
correct port using the correct driver and that the port
is configured correctly.

FRAME TYPE
RCVD
Number of retransmissions necessary because a
remote node did not acknowledge receipt of a
frame sent to it. Excessive retransmissions may
degrade performance, cause 40 ERRORS, or
indicate developing network hardware or
congestion problems.
The first column indicates the network number
associated with the protocol frame type for
communication between server and printer.
Unless a specific frame type has been manually
configured, the print server automatically
determines the protocol frame type by listening
to the NetWare data being transferred over the
network. If UNKNOWN is listed, the
HP JetDirect print server is still trying to
determine which network number to use.
If the network number is DISABLED, a specific
frame type has been manually configured. The
Frame Type value can be EN_8023, EN_8022,
EN_II, or EN_SNAP. The RCVD count indicates
how many packets have been received for
each frame type.
