Installing a Lucent ORINOCO
Wireless PCMCIA Card on a
T1010 Thin Client

Overview

Compaq does not offer the Lucent ORINCO Wireless LAN PCMCIA card, however, we are making available the drivers to enable the card to work on the Compaq T1010 Thin Client running Windows NTe.
Please contact Lucent for questions or requests regarding support
and/or warranty issues with the PCMCIA card.
The installation process involves:
Starting with a clean T1010 Windows NTe image.
Connecting the Ethernet cable to the Thin Client and powering on
the unit.
Installing the necessary drivers for the wireless card.
Powering off the Thin Client and installing the wireless card.
Disconnecting the Ethernet cable and powering on the Thin Client.
Do not install the new wireless PCMCIA card on your
T1010 Thin Client until after you have completed the software installation and configuration.

Audience Assumptions

Installing a wireless PCMCIA card requires the same level of expertise that you need to install a standard Ethernet network adapter card. This document assumes that you have a working knowledge of standard Windows operations and of installing network adapter cards.

Before You Begin

Before you begin the installation, complete the following steps:
1. Note the SSID (service set identifiers) or Access Point name (the network name for the Access Point).
2. Locate the encryption keys for your installation.
If you use 40-bit encryption, you need four 5-byte key codes.
If you use 128-bit encryption, you need four 13-byte key codes.
3. Start with a clean T1010 Windows NTe image.
4. Verify that the Thin Client is connected to the network.

Preparing the Thin Client

This section describes the steps necessary to install the Lucent ORINOCO wireless PCMCIA card successfully.
1. Power up the Thin Client and confirm that it is connected to the network.
2. Log on as Administrator.
If you need to access the Specify Logon Information screen,
press the following keys in the following order:

3. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel and from the Control Panel program, double-click the Network icon.

4. From the Network program, select the Adapters tab and then click Add.
5. From the Select Network Adapter window, choose the Have Disk option.
6. From the Insert Disk window, use
c:\orinoco
for the pathname and
click OK.
7. The Select OEM Option dialog box is displayed. Select the appropriate wireless card, then click OK.
8. The Add/Edit Configuration Profile screen is displayed. Click Edit using the default profile.
9. The Edit Configuration [Select Profile] screen is displayed. Enter a
Profile name, for example, “wireless,” with the Network Type set to Access Point.
10. Click Next.
11. The Edit Configuration [Identify Your Network] screen is displayed. Enter a network name, for example, “my wireless” (the name of the Access Point).
12. Click Next.
13. The Edit Configuration [Set Security] screen is displayed. If security/encryption will be used, select the Enable Data Security check box to enable security/encryption. If security/encryption will not be used, click Next for no security and proceed to step 18.
14. Select the appropriate check box; either Use Alphanumeric (the default) or Use Hexadecimal.
15. Enter the appropriate values for the encryption keys in the Key 1, Key 2, Key 3, and Key 4 fields.
16. Select the appropriate value for the Encrypt data with field. The default value is “Key 1.”
17. Click Next.

18. The Edit Configuration [Power Management] screen is displayed. Click Next to leave the Power Management set to the default of “OFF.”
19. The Edit Configuration [TCP/IP Behavior] screen is displayed. Click Next.
20. The Edit Configuration [NT Adapter Settings] screen is displayed. Verify the default setting of the I/O Base field is set to “400” and the Interrupt field is set to “11.”
21. Click Finish.
22. Click OK at the Add/Edit Configuration [Profile] screen.
23. From the Network screen, select the Bindings tab.
24. In the Show Bindings for field, select all adapters from the drop-down box instead of all services. Click the National
Semiconductor Corp. DP83815 10/100 MacPhyter3V PCI Adapter option.
25. Click Disable, then Close.
26. The Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window is displayed. From the
IP Address tab, select the Obtain an IP address from a DHCP Server check box. The following message is displayed:
DHCP protocol will attempt to automatically configure your workstation during system initialization. Any parameters specified in these property pages will override any values obtained by DHCP. Do you want to enable DHCP?
27. Click Ye s .
28. From the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window, click Apply, then OK.
The system will prompt you to restart. DO NOT restart the
system when prompted. Click No when prompted.
29. Close the Control Panel window.

30. Click the Start menu and then click Shutdown and Power OFF.
31. Insert the PCMCIA wireless card into the PCMCIA slot on the Thin Client.
32. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the Thin Client.
33. Power on the Thin Client. The wireless card is now set up to function properly.
After installing the wireless software, a Wireless Network icon is
displayed in the Control Panel. Use this icon to add or edit the wireless configuration profile data.
The PC Card (PCMCIA) icon in the Control Panel can be used
to see the socket status, controller settings, and wireless card properties.

Troubleshooting

After you have performed all of the installation instructions, attempt to access the network. If you are unsuccessful:
1. Verify that the wireless card is seated correctly.
2. Confirm that the Access Point (network name) is correct (step 11).
3. Change the key that the data is encrypted with. There are four choices, Key 1, Key 2, Key 3, and Key 4 (step 16).
4. Try to install a wireless card that you know is working.

Important Service Repair Information

In all cases, remove and safeguard all external options before returning the Thin Client to Compaq for repair.
In countries that support customer mail-in repair by returning the same unit to the customer, Compaq makes every effort to return the repaired Thin Client with the same internal memory and flash modules that were sent.
In countries that do not support customer mail-in repair by returning the same unit to the customer, all internal options should be removed and safeguarded in addition to the external options. The Thin Client should be restored to the original configuration before returning it to Compaq for repair.
