What to Do When a New Virus Is Discovered
If you notice a virus alert, please send it to us for analysis. We will finish analyzing the virus within 24 hours and do our best to minimize data loss or damage. We will accept unknown viruses that are detected by third party anti-virus software for analysis.
Symptoms of a Virus Infection
(1) When typical viruses infect your system

How to Report and Transmit Your Infected File
(1) By File or Macro virus
If a macro or file virus infects your file, zip the infected file with a password, and send it to us for analysis. In case the infected file contains important information, please follow the steps shown

(2) Boot Virus
Use the boot sector utility named VRBOOT32.EXE under ViRobot folder to extract the boot virus and send it to us. Follow the procedure below:
Go to Start > Run > Type ‘cmd’, and hit the Enter keyUse the ‘cd’ command in DOS to browse to your ViRobot installation directoryAt the command line, type ‘VRBOOT32.EXE’ to create MBS.VRB, and DBS.VRB files. Send these two files to our Customer Support Team according to Contact Information.

You can update your engine even if you use a firewall or proxy server, since ViRobot Expert supports FTP and HTTP protocols. ViRobot Expert supports updates through leased Internet line, LAN, or modem. It offers an alternative server detecting function when the userᴗs assigned update server is busy. Also available are strengthened update functions including automatic update notices,

Virus Transmission and On-line Customer Support Service
ViRobot Expert detects and moves unknown viruses to a virtual directory in Windows 95/98/Me/NT Workstation/2000/XP to prevent further infection. At your request, the infected files will be automatically sent to HAURI Virus Customer Support Team for analysis. You will receive an analysis report within 24 hours. All infected files are automatically encrypted before being sent to us for security. You can also check to see if your infected files are successfully transmitted.
Powerful E-Mail Real Time Monitoring and Mailbox Manual Scan Features
ViRobot Expert will scan your mailbox and monitor your incoming and outgoing email in real-time for viruses. It will let you decide between automatically deleting an infected file and following prompt directions or using another solution that you choose.
ViRobot Expert supports both POP3 and Exchange server. It is embedded in Microsoft Outlook for easy access should you decide to scan your mailbox manually. The mailbox option in ViRobot Expert displays userᴗs mailbox information on the left pane for easy access.
Perfect Internet Monitor
ViRobot monitors all paths that make an Internet user vulnerable to infection. It detects and removes any viruses or malicious codes while you are downloading a file from the Internet. In other words, ViRobot Expert safeguards your system when you surf the Internet.
MacRobot for Office 2000/IE 5
MacRobot, an exclusive macro virus monitoring module, automatically detects and removes macro viruses whenever you open an MS Office 2000 document or Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher. With an enhanced MacRobot engine, ViRobot Expert can block any macro viruses stemming from the Internet or any other sources.

Scanning Compressed Files
ViRobot Expert supports various compressed file formats including ZIP, ARJ (JAR), LHA, RAR, CAB, ACE, and ZOO. It can detect and repair viruses up to 5 zipped levels. Since ViRobot Expert supports UUENCODE and MIME which email utilizes, it can block any viruses in email­compressed files.

When you run ViRobot Expert, it will access Hauri homepage automatically to bring you security alerts, notices, and news. You can get Hauriᴗs latest news, trial versions, new virus definitions, and engine updates from the Hauri News window.
Powerful Emergency Disk Support
If your system cannot boot because of boot viruses, ViRobot Expert provides an emergency disk to recover your boot sector, and automatically scans for viruses. It supports both FAT and NTFS file systems.

Installing ViRobot Expert
To install ViRobot Expert, insert ViRobot CD into the CD-Rom drive. ViRobot Expert setup program will start automatically. Please take the following steps when the auto set up program fails to run.
(1) Go to Start > Run in Windows 95/98/2000 Professional/XP/NT Workstation
(2) Enter your CD-Rom drive label and type ‘setup.exe’ < enter > (For example, if your CD-
ROM drive is D, type ‘D:\SETUP.EXE’ <enter>)

(1) The initial installation window of ViRobot Expert appears on the screen. Click Next to
install.

Tips : The following message will appear if you have previously installed anti­virus software in your computer. Click yes to replace the previously installed anti­virus software with ViRobot Expert.

(2) The ViRobot Expert software license agreement will appear on the screen. Click Yes if you
agree and go on with the installation.
(3) Enter username, company or organization, and serial number. Click Next to continue.

(4) Browse to a location where you want to install ViRobot Expert program. The default
installation directory is C:\Program Files\ ViRobotXP. Click Next to continue. Click
Browseto select a different installation directory.

(5) ViRobot Expert begins installation on your computer.
(6) The program asks if you want to create an Emergency Disk after the installation process is
completed. To create an Emergency disk, select the checkbox and click Next. Otherwise, just click Next. Note: you can create an Emergency Disk anytime after installation.

(7) ViRobot Expert is now successfully installed. Click Finish to update your ViRobot Expert
now. To update later, uncheck the update box, and click Finish

Tips : Every time your ViRobot Expert starts, it checks for the latest definitions and lets you know if you need to update ViRobot Expert. To update now, click Start

Get Started with ViRobot Expert
T o run ViRobot Expert after installation, you may choose one of the following methods:

Folder/Mail/Configuration Frame
Switch between Computer or Mailbox view by selecting View > Computer, or View > Mailbox
(1) Folder Frame
To get to Folder Frame, you can either click the Computer icon on the Tool bar or go to View > Computer. Check off the drives or folders you wish to scan and click ᴖScanᴗbutton.
(2) Mail Frame
To scan email attachments, you need to setup your email client program in ViRobot Expert.
Example 1: For MS Outlook, ViRobot will scan and detect viruses in all mail folders. Example 2: For MS Outlook Express, ViRobot will scan and detect email in the Inbox only.
Warning : Virus scan is available for the selected mailbox in the Mail Frame. For infected mail, save the attached file under a different file name to repair it.
Tips : ViRobot Expert has a new security feature in the MS Outlook Exchange Client to monitor all incoming and outgoing email. It adds ViRobot Expert to MS Outlook each time it scans to create a safer environment for email processes. Refer to Chapter 4 for more information on how to use ViRobot Expert in MS Outlook.

(3) Configuration Frame
You can modify the settings for Basic Scanning, Mailbox Scanning, Exclude Folders, Set schedule, and Others. Click ᴖReset configᴗor ᴖLanguagesᴗto restore default settings or language.
List Frame
List Frame is reserved for advanced configuration settings in ViRobot Expert. It varies according to the option you choose from the Tool bar.
Computer: List Frame displays file scanning options including Show Report Only, Repair After Confirmation, Repair Automatically, Scan All Files, Scan Executables Files, Scan Office Files, and Compressed File options.
Mailbox: List Frame displays mailbox scanning options including All Email Attachments, and Only Scan Unread Email option.
Configuration: List Frame displays file scanning options
Monitoring: List Frame displays option for Enable/Disable ViRobot real time monitor.
Scan/Stop button
Starts scanning the selected items, or stop virus scanning process.
Repair Frame
Displays virus-scan results including infected file names, virus names, and scanning status.

How to Scan and Repair My Computer
When you run ViRobot Expert, it displays the Folder List window. You can select any folders or local drives to scan for viruses. To return to this window, simply click the ‘Computer’ icon on the Tool bar. You can scan for viruses while working on other ViRobot Expert feature tasks.

(1) Select folders or drives to scan in the Folder Frame
To do this, check the box next to the drive or folder to be scanned.
You will see a check mark in front of the selected drives or folders ( ).

When subfolders are selected, the parent folder is grayed out ( ). Click ( ) in front of the parent folder to display its extended subfolder list.
(2) Click Scan or go to File > Scan on the Menu bar to start virus scan. (3) When scanning begins, a pop up window appears, displaying the names of files being
scanned. (4) To stop the file scanning in progress, click the Stop button or go to File > Stop. (5) Figu re 3-6 displays scanning results, which includes the total number of scanned files,
number of infected files, repaired files, and more.

Repairing Infected Files
If any virus is detected during virus scan, you will see the dialog box shown below. The default setting is Ask what action to take for detected viruses. You can easily change the default options.
(1) You can choose one of the following options once a virus is found.
Repair: Repairs the detected infected file, or deletes the overwriting or backdoor virus type.
Beware that deleting an overwriting infected file may affect your system.
Ignore: Only detects viruses without repairing. The virus list will be saved in case you may
need to review it later.
Auto repair: Repair all infected files without asking what action to take. Cancel: Cancels the scanning process.
(2) Right click on the infected file, the select options such as Repair, or Send to Hauri.
Repair : Repairs selected infected files. Send to HAURI: Sends the selected infected file to Hauri Customer Support Team in case
the repairing status is Failed to Repair, Suspected, or New Virus.

Customer Support Team, and we will return a detailed analysis of the infected files within 24 hours.
Deleted
A file infected with an overwriting or backdoor virus was deleted. Beware that deleting an overwriting infected file may affect your system.
Overlapped
This message will appear if you stop in the middle of the repairing process. It indicates the infected file is not completely repaired. Select this infected file and repair it again.
Access denied
The file is often inaccessible in case of Windows viruses. Use a clean boot disk, and ViRobot for DOS to repair. Please go to Chapter 6 to see how to create a ViRobot for DOS.
Repair after decompression
This message will appear when the infected file is in a compressed file format. The infected compressed file is detected but not repaired. Decompress the infected file in a temporary folder and scan it again with ViRobot Expert to repair it.
Repair after decryption
ViRobot cannot repair a macro virus infected file that is locked with a password. You will need to unlock the document and scan it with ViRobot Expert again.
New Virus
This message will appear when a new virus is detected. Please send the infected file to the HAURI Customer Support Team. We will send you our vaccine for that particular virus.
Suspected
This message will appear when ViRobot detects a virus through an unknown virus detection function. Please send the file to the HAURI Customer Support Team. We will send you our analysis results.

How to Disinfect Viruses in Your Mailbox
You can select Mailbox icon in the T oolbar to scan for email attachments.

includes total number of scanned files, number of infected files, and number of files that have

Repairing Infected Files
In case any virus is detected, ViRobot Expert displays the infected e-mailᴗs subject, sender name, and receiving date in the Virus Scan Info window. Double click a selected item to see more detailed information. You cannot repair the infected email attachment directly from the mailbox. To repair the infected email attachment, save it under another name, and then scan it again with ViRobot Expert.

Tips : ViRobot Expert only shows the Inbox in the Folder frame for MS Outlook Express while it shows all folders in the mailbox for MS Outlook 97/2000.
Warning : Enabling real time monitor for incoming and outgoing mail is highly recommended to prevent infected email attachments. Chapter 6 describes how to turn on real time monitor in more detail.

Basic Configurations
Select Configuration on the Tool bar to perform basic configuration for ViRobot Expert. You can find quick configuration options for Basic Scanning, Mailbox Scanning, Exclude Folders, Set Schedule, and Others on the left of the application window. All setting configurations will be applied when you perform virus scan on My Computer and Mailbox.

Mailbox Scanning
You want to scan:
(1) All email attachments: scans all email attachments in the mailbox (2) Only unread email attachments: only scans unread email attachments to reduce scanning time.
Exclude Folders
Folders listed in Exclude Zone will not be scanned. (1) Highlight the ᴖExclude Foldersᴗoption on the left of the ViRobot Expert application window (2) Click Add under Exclude Zone (3) Browse to a specific folder you wish to exclude from virus scan (4) Click OK under Browse in the Folder window (5) The newly added excluded folder should be listed in the Folder section (6) To remove an excluded folder from the list, highlight it, and click Delete

Set Schedule
You may schedule definition updates and virus scan. Please refer to the ViRobot Schedule Wizard section for more detailed information. (1) Highlight the ᴖSet Scheduleᴗoption on the left of the ViRobot Expert application window (2) Follow the steps in ViRobot Schedule Wizard to schedule definition updates or virus scan. Click
Finish to complete the schedule setup task (3) Verify the newly created schedule information in the List Frame (4) To remove a schedule from the list, highlight it, and click Delete
Others
There are three other configurations when you select ᴖOthersᴗon the left of the ViRobot Expert application window.
(1) Check HAURI News: Enabling ᴖCheck HAURI Newsᴗallows you to receive Hauri News
while using ViRobot Expert. Disable this option if you do not have Internet access. (2) Enable R-mouse Scan: Lets you start scanning a particular folder by choosing the ViRobot Scan
option from the R-mouse menu. (3) Add ViRobot in Windows Explorer: You can embed ViRobot Expert in your Windows
Explorer by checking off this option. Chapter 5 will explain more on how to use ViRobot Expert
from Windows Explorer.

Monitoring
Click Monitoring on the ViRobot Expert Tool bar to configure ViRobot Resident. It is important to have a superior real-time monitoring program for protecting your PC against virus infection.

Office Scanning
ViRobot Expert will scan document files completely for viruses before they are opened from Internet Explorer or MS Office.

Mailbox Scanning
Select email accounts to be included in Mail Monitor. Mail Monitor uses VP (ViRobot Proxy) technology to scan email attachments from MS Outlook Express, MS Outlook 97/2000, and other email programs such as Netscape Messenger, and Eudora. VP has superior methods to detect and repair worms and backdoor viruses.
(1) A list of registered email accounts in the selected email program such as MS Outlook Express,
and MS Outlook 97/2000 is displayed in List Frame.
(2) Check off the email accounts you want ViRobot Expert to scan. Configuration will be
inactivated if the selected email program is running. In this case, temporarily close the running
email program, check off the email account from ViRobot Expert, and then re-run the email
program.

Update
Click the Update icon on the ViRobot Expert Tool bar, or go to Tools > Update Wizard to update ViRobot Engine with the latest virus definition files. Updating ViRobot with new definition files will protect your system against new viruses. ViRobot Expert supports updating via both FTP and HTTP protocols. ViRobot users can easily get updates even if they are using firewall or proxy server protection. ViRobot Expert also provides updates through floppy disks, shared folders, internal servers, modems, and leased lines.

When access to external network is unavailable, you can use the network shared folder option to
keep ViRobot engine up to date. To use this option, you must have a shared folder in a PC with
the latest update files.
Type in the IP Address or name of the PC with a shared update folder.

If you do not have any means to connect to an external system, but you can get help from
another system that has LAN or modem connection, use a 1.44 MB floppy disk to update your
engine.
Warning : Make sure the shared PC has the latest update files before sharing the update folder. You should keep sharing the folder until all the updates are completed.
Tips : You may share your update folder with others by clicking Share. Otherwise, click Release to return it to the unshare status.

Scheduled Virus Scan
ViRobot Expert scans your computer at a specific date and time you have previously scheduled. It is recommended to set up a virus scan schedule at off-peak hours to avoid affecting your system capacity.

Daily: Select a specific time of the day to scan for viruses. It is recommended to choose a time
when you employ low system resource.
Weekly: Select a specific day and time of the week to scan for viruses. To scan more than
once per week, make another weekly schedule for a different day of the week.
Monthly: Select a specific day of the month to scan for viruses. It is recommended to scan
more than once a month. To scan more than once a month, make another scheduled scan for a different day of the month.
Screen Saver: Virus scan starts when your screen saver is activated. Selecting this option lets
you scan for viruses when your computer is in Screen Saver mode.

Scheduled Update
Scheduled Update allows you to automatically update your engine by connecting to a specific server at the time and date you have previously set. HAURI Inc. provides virus definitions and engine updates weekly. It is recommended that you schedule your engine to get updates at least once a week.

Protocol
ViRobot Expert supports both FTP and HTTP protocols. However, HTTP protocol is recommended when networking connection is reliable.
Proxy
Check the Proxy option if you use a proxy server. Note that the proxy server settings from Internet Explorer will be changed when proxy server settings from ViRobot Expert are changed. Therefore, you cannot connect to the Internet if you enter a wrong proxy server IP Address and port number in ViRobot Expert. Contact your Administrator for proxy server IP address and port number. Home users need not set up proxy server information.

Creating an Emergency Disk
Your system cannot boot up when a boot virus has infected it. You can use ViRobot emergency disk to restore the infected boot sector. ViRobot emergency disk supports both FAT and NTFS file systems.Also, you can create a Virobot for DOS disk when creating emergency disk so that you may scan for viruses in DOS mode.
Creating an Emergency Disk
To create a Virobot emergency disk, go to Tools > Create Emergency Disk on the ViRobot Expert Menu bar.

How to Use Boot Sector Recovery Utility (Rebuild.exe)
(1) Start your system in DOS mode after inserting a ViRobot emergency disk in the floppy drive. (2) Type ᴖrebuildᴗand hit Enter.
A:\>rebuild (3) Read the warning message shown in Figure 3.52 carefully before starting the recovery process.
(4) Click Start to restore your boot sector. (5) Remove Virobot emergency disk and restart your system.

Warning : If operations such as disk reformatting have changed your system boot sector after you created the emergency disk, or you have created the emergency disk on a different system with different data structures than the infected system, you must create a new emergency disk. Running REBUILD.EXE while ignoring the data mismatch may cause errors in your system. The emergency disk will not be able to recover the boot sector when it is severely damage by a boot virus.

Create ViRobot for DOS
You may create ViRobot for DOS to scan and remove viruses. Boot sector recovery is not possible if a boot virus has severely damaged your system. You need to prepare an emergency disk in advance to restore your boot sector in case a boot virus attacks it at a later time.
