To obtain the hi ghest accurac y for measureme nts it is import ant to follow the se tips:
• Fresh buf fer should be use d for each ca libratio n. Calibration is only as g ood as the buffe r being use d. The pH buf fer values c hange over ti me once the sa chets are op ened.
• When the me ter is not in use it i s important to a dd several dro ps of storage s olution to the prote ctive cap to ke ep the probe hydr ated. If stora ge solution is no t available, pH
4.01 or pH 7.01 buffer can be u sed.
• For improv ed accuracy it is r ecommended t o calibrate in tw o buffers .
• It is import ant to calibrate and me asure samples at the s ame temperature as t here is no temperature compensation. A dramatic change in temperature between buffer solutio ns and samples to b e tested will gi ve inaccurate re adings.
Refilling the Electrode
• If fouled, remove the s leeve and r inse slee ve and sens or tip wit h purifi ed water. Turn over the probe, remo ve the sle eve by care fully rot ating it and pull strai ght along the axis of the el ectro de. Use care as the pH s tem is made of glass. Rinse of f any traces of ele ctrolyte g el.
• Soak the s ensor tip i n HI70061G, HI700661P, HI700663P o r HI700664P cleaning s olution f or 20 minu tes t hen rinse wit h purified wat er.
• Refill the r eferen ce well wit h HI9071 Gelled Bridge Electrolyte.
• Replace the refere nce sleeve: inser t and push the sl eeve onto the ele ctrode. Make sure the bla ck O-ring i s fixed in side the electr ode body. Any excess o f gel will be expelle d from the end of t he electro de through the o pen junction .
• Rinse any ex cess gel off wi th purified wate r and gently dry of f body wit h a soft cloth o r tissue.
• Soak assembled probe in Electrode storage solution for a minimum of 30 min utes.
• Rinse prob e with purifi ed water.
• Shake the el ectro de down as yo u would do wi th a clinical thermom eter to elimina te any air bubbles in side the glass b ulb.
• Calibrate in fresh buffers before using for measurements.

Procedure for Direct Ground Measurement
1) Verify meter is set up correctly and pH probe is calibrated.
2) Dig, discarding 5 cm of topsoil.
3) Perforate the soil (with HI721319 soil auger) to a depth of about 20 cm or more.
4) If the soil is dry, moisten it with a small amount of tap water.
5) Wash the electrode with tap water (not distilled).
6) Insert the electrode pushing it slightly into the soil to ensure proper contact.
7) Observe the measurement.
8) Wash the electrode with tap water (not distilled) and (using a finger) gently remove any soil remaining on the electrode (avoid using a rag or cloth).
9) Repeat the procedure in different locations in the field.
10) Consider the average of the measured data.
For best r esult, it is advisabl e to measure the pH of a s oil solution, using a s ample of soil and soil preparation solution HI7051; it is bette r to use this proce dure if you have to test a st ony field in whic h you risk damaging t he electrode .
