Procedure for Direct Ground Measurement
1) Verify meter is set up correctly and pH probe is calibrated.
2) Dig, discarding 5 cm of topsoil.
3) Perforate the soil (with HI721319 soil auger) to a depth of about 20 cm or more.
4) If the soil is dry, moisten it with a small amount of tap water.
5) Wash the electrode with tap water (not distilled).
6) Insert the electrode pushing it slightly into the soil to ensure proper contact.
7) Observe the measurement.
8) Wash the electrode with tap water (not distilled) and (using a finger) gently remove
any soil remaining on the electrode (avoid using a rag or cloth).
9) Repeat the procedure in different locations in the field.
10) Consider the average of the measured data.
For best r esult, it is advisabl e to measure the pH of a s oil solution, using a s ample of
soil and soil preparation solution HI7051; it is bette r to use this proce dure if you have
to test a st ony field in whic h you risk damaging t he electrode .
Probe Features
Removable PVDF reference sleeve
Polyvi nylidene fluorid e (PVDF) is a durable plas tic that is resist ant to most chemical s
and solve nts, including so dium hypochlori te. It has high abrasion r esistance, mec hanical
strengt h and resistan ce to ultravio let. PVDF is also re sistant to fun gal growth.
Operation
Press th e ON/OFF but ton to turn th e meter on. All ta gs
will be displayed.
The meter w ill go into m easure ment mode : current
reading an d calibrated b uffers a re displayed .
Meter Calibration
From measurement
mode, press and
hold the ON/OFF
button until “CAL”
is displayed.
When “7.01” blinks
on the display, place
the tip of the probe
into a pH 4.01, 7.01
buffer solution.
When the
reading is s table,
the stab ility
indicator will
disappe ar.“Sto”
will be disp layed
when the
calibration
is saved.
If pH 4.01 buff er
solutio n is used
as the fir st point
the value of the
buffe r is recogni zed
and displayed
with the blinking
stability indicator.
Meter wil l
exit to
measurement
mode and th e
calibration
tag will be
displayed.
One-Point Calibration with pH 4.01
B
One-Point
Meter will exit
to measurement
mode and the
calibration
tag will be
displayed.
pH 4.01 will then
blink on the display.
Ignore it an d press
ON/OFF button.
Two- Point
Use pH 4.01 to
perform a twopoint calibration.
The value is
automatically
recognized and
displayed with the
blinking stability
indicator.
When the reading
is stable, the
stability indicator
will disappear.
“Sto” will be
displayed when
the calibration
is saved.
Meter will exit
to measurement
mode and the
calibration
tags will be
displayed.
If pH 7.01 buffer solution is used as
the first point the buffer is recognized
with the blinking stability indicator.
When the reading is stable, the
stability indicator will disappear
and pH 7.01 will be calibrated.
If pH 7.01 is the only calibration point,
finish one-point procedure at right.
If using pH 4.01 as a second point,
continue two-point procedure at right.
Meter Overview
Preparation:
The pH elec trode is shipp ed ready for u se with a prote ctive cap con taining stor age solution . Before
using the m eter, remove the pro tective cap and in spect the probe t o verify the bri dge gel has
not dried ou t. Refresh the brid ge electroly te if necessar y. Following care pro cedure (ignoring t he
cleaning procedures).
Alterna tely, rinse o ff the pro be tip with w ater and con dition the e lectrod e by soakin g the tip (bot tom
4 cm (1.5”)) in pH 7.01 buffer s olution f or sever al minutes . Perform a p robe calib ration be fore usin g.
• Do not be alarme d if white c ryst als appear ar ound the c ap. This is nor mal with p H
electr odes. Rinse o ff the probe t ip with water b efore using.
• Tur n the meter on by p ressing ON/ OFF button.
• R emove the prote ctive cap. DO NOT S CRATCH THE GLA SS. Do not use the pr obe to bore
a hole thro ugh the soil. Mak e sure an entry ho le is made in the soil a nd water has bee n
added. Af ter placing t he probe in the ho le, wait for a sta ble reading.
NEVER IMM ERSE THE ELECTR ODE OVER THE MA XIMUM IMMERSI ON LEVEL.
• For best results, recalibrate periodically.
• A fter use, r inse the elec trode wit h water and sto re it with a few dr ops of storage s olution
in the prot ective cap.
• R eattach th e protectiv e cap after ea ch use.
DO NOT USE DIS TILLED OR DEIONIZ ED WATER FOR STOR AGE PURPOSES.
