Dual Technology Readers
Dual Technology Readers
The Dual Technology readers combine the ability to read
ProxLite® , proximity and standard magstripe badges in one
badge reader. There are two models available: Model 1000, a
proximity magstripe reader; and Model 1010, which includes a
12-key tactile keypad. In each case, the one-piece reader
housing is molded from rugged and maintenance-free
polycarbonate. The gray housing blends readily with a wide
range of decors.
Both readers include a functional self-test on power-up and selftuning. As a result, the readers will automatically adjust to local
site conditions that affect reader operation.
The Model 1010 keypad works equally well with either proximity
or magstripe badges. In each case, PIN (Personal Identification
Number) entry follows a valid badge read for two-factor security,
as indicated by a steady light from the yellow LED. In keypad
mode, up to 10-digits can be entered.
Reader-to-microcontroller communication supervision is field
configurable via a jumper located on the reader. Either
supervised or non-supervised F/2F or Wiegand operation may
be selected. In supervised mode, if communication is lost with
the microcontroller, the red LED blinks three times, and
automatically goes offline (breach security feature) .
Operation
The reader constantly radiates a field that will power-up the
electronics in a proximity badge or key tag. In turn, the badge
sends its unique badge ID number (BID) to the reader. The
reader formats the BID and sends it to the microcontroller,
which makes the access decision. The decision is sent to the
reader which, for example, may result in the door being
unlocked and to the access control system database for
historical record purposes.
The magstripe reader will read a BID number from track two of
any ABA standard magstripe badge. The reader will send the
first four digits, up to a maximum of the first 16 digits, to the
microcontroller.

The reader's user interface consists of two tri-state LEDs and
beeper. Beeper sound levels are switch selectable.
With Model 1000 readers, a steady red LED indicates reader
power is on and the reader is set for use, the yellow LED lights
and the beeper sounds once to indicate a valid badge read, and
the green LED lights to indicate the door strike has been
activated. The Model 1010 keypad-equipped reader operates
the same with the exception of the yellow LED, which lights
upon a valid badge read to indicate the reader is ready to

accept PIN entry.
Installation
The included polycarbonate reader backplate has hole locations
marked for easy installation onto either a standard USA dualwidth electrical box or a similar standard European electrical
box. Mounting hardware is installer provided.
The readers include a tamper switch that will signal a
separation between the reader and its backplate. A connection
on the reader supports installation of a separate, installersupplied tamper switch, typically installed between the reader
backplate and the wall.
Readers are weather resistant. Reader installation must
provide protection from water, snow or ice. An optional heater
kit will keep the magstripe reader badge slot and reader keypad
free of ice and snow.
Dual Technology readers automatically sense and adjust to 12
VDC or 48 VDC input voltages. In 12 VDC installations, a
separate reader power supply may be required if the reader
installation is more than 150 m from its power source (typically
the microcontroller), or the input voltage wire is less than 20
AWG. The local power supply must be able to supply 200 mA
of regulated VDC at 12 VDC or 70 mA at 48 VDC.
