1. The Genius Hub install
Set up the Genius Hub next to the broadband internet router. Locate one of the free ‘Ethernet’ jacks on the back of the router. The short internet cable (provided) should link the Genius Hub to the broadband router.
Plug the USB power cable into the power supply included with the Genius Hub and plug the power supply into a wall socket (not an extension lead).
Try and ensure that the Genius Hub is in an open space and not hidden away behind many heavy objects.
The low power wireless communication to the other devices is easily stopped by thick walls, large metal objects, and water.

2. Installing the thermostat
The thermostat is the master controller for all of the rooms in the house. The temperature it measurers is used to determine whether or not to turn on the rooms which do not have room sensors.
It is important to site it in a cool (ideally north facing room) so that it will always allow rooms to come on when they are set to, on the app.
The thermostat needs to be placed on a wall and be in radio range with the Genius Hub.
First take the thermostat to the position in the house where it is likely to be located
. Next insert the batteries into the back of the
thermostat. Leave it in the position where it will be fixed to the wall.
Within 20 minutes the thermostat will report a temperature back to the app. If it does not it will need to be moved closer to the Genius Hub.

3. Installing the boiler controller
Types of boiler
The Genius Hub has been tested with most makes of combination boiler (properties with no hot water tank) and system boiler (properties with a hot water tank).
For combination boilers. In many cases you can swap the boiler programmer with the Genius Hub Boiler Controller (Single). You need to ensure that terminals L, N, 2 & 4 on the Genius Hub boiler controller are wired correctly.
Boiler programmers often use a standard back-plate. In this case you can remove the screws from the underside of the existing programmer and swap the existing programmer for the Heat Genius Boiler Controller (Single), without needing to do any re-wiring. If there is no
boiler programmer the Genius Hub Boiler Controller (Single) must be wired into the boiler as if it were an external programmer or thermostat. See wiring diagrams provided by boiler manufacturer
to confirm the wiring guide in this installation manual.
For system boilers. The existing programmer must be exchanged with the Heat Genius Boiler Controller (Dual) to control the heating and the hot water. In many cases where there is an existing room thermostat, the Heat Genius Thermostat can replace where the old house thermostat used to be located. Note that the wiring for the old thermostat is no longer required, it can be removed of linked through.
If there is no existing programmer then the Genius Hub Boiler Controller (dual) should be wired directly into the wiring centre. See
wiring diagrams provided by boiler manufacturer to confirm the wiring guide in this installation manual.

4. Setting up the smart plug(s) around the house
The smart plugs are used to relay the messages to and from the Genius Hub and the valves, room sensors, boiler controller and thermostat. The signals travel in straight lines and the only devices
that relay the messages are the smart plugs and the boiler controller.
If only one smart plug is provided position it halfway between the Genius Hub and the furthest other device in the house.
Consider that thick stone on concrete walls will be impossible for the wireless signal to penetrate, so the smart plug may need to be positioned in a wall socket, which gives a longer route but through thinner walls.
Do not plug anything into the smart plug that needs to remain on all of the time such as a fridge or freezer. The smart plugs intermittently turn off, causing anything that you plug into it to also turn off.
For large properties with more smart plugs, they will need to be plugged into wall sockets in a central location. Ideally one smart plug will be positioned in the same room as the Genius Hub, and one smart plug put one on each floor directly above or below the Genius Hub.
When setting up the network remember to close all the doors in the house to make sure the signals will find the best routes.
Page 16
16
5. Setting up the app
The Hub now needs to be set up with the rooms that the customer wants to control.
Log onto the customer’s WiFi network with your smart phone or the device that the customer plans to control the heating with.
Ask the customer for a list of the rooms and ask them to put them in order with the more important ones at the top.
The Heat Genius App
If you have not already, you will need to download the Heat Genius app.
If you don’t have a smartphone then visit the Heat Genius Website and click on the ‘My Hub’ in the top right hand corner.
www.heatgenius.co.uk
To launch the app click on the ‘My Hub’ link on the Heat Genius website, or launch the app on your smartphone, tablet or computer.

6. Adding new zones to the house (on the app)
If the customer does not have any radiator valves or room sensors then skip sections 6 - 8 and go straight to section 9.
Note: the creating of the rooms on the app may have already been done before the system was shipped.
If the customer has individual radiators or smart plugs that need to be controlled, first the rooms need to be added to the app. Note: you can
have more than one radiator in a room if you wish.
On the home screen,
tap on the circled icon
at the top and select
‘Setup’.
Tap on ‘New Zone’.
You then will be
prompted to enter a
room name and type.
Tap ‘Ok’ to save.
Any smart plugs used to control devices need their own rooms. These should be set up with the room type “Hot Water / Smart Plug”.
Create all of the rooms now.
Page 19
19
7. Adding the devices to the individual zones
Note: the putting of the devices into the rooms on the app may have already been done before the system was shipped.
All of the devices now need to be put into the rooms in the app.
On the home screen,
tap on the circled icon
at the top and select
‘Setup’.
Choose the zone that
the device is going into.
Tap ‘Add Device’
Tap ‘Include New Z-
Wave Node”.
Select the device type
and follow the
instructions.
Once finished select the
device and tap “OK”.
Page 20
20
Now take those devices to the room and install them. See step 8.
8. Adding the valves and room sensors to the house
Radiator valve details
The Radiator Valves are electronic and communicate wirelessly with the Genius Hub telling the system what temperature the room has been set to, and if the rooms requires the boiler to be on.
The Radiator valves require 2 x AA
batteries (supplied). Access these under the cover and use your nail to release the catch.
Rechargeable Batteries must not
be used as their voltage is too low (1.2V not 1.5V, as is required).
Each Radiator Va
lve comes with
two adaptors.
The two adaptors convert this to a
M30x1.5(K) thread (the UK
standard) or a Danfoss RA valve.
If neither of these fit the valves in the property then new Danfoss RAFS valve bodies can be purchased directly from Heat Genius.
Once the valve has batteries, a ‘21º’ should
appear on the screen. Press and hold the middle
button for 3 seconds or until M appears on the
screen. Then press the middle button again until
the valve buzzes and the plunger on the
underside of the val
ve retracts up inside the
valve.
The valve MUST be in mount mode
when it is attached to the radiator.
Page 21
21
Once the valve is in place on the radiator press and hold the middle button for 3 seconds until the valve starts to buzz and ‘21º’ or ‘4º’ appears on the screen of the valve.
Sometimes when you press a button on the valve it can take 30 seconds for the screen to react. This is normal as the valve may be communicating with the Genius Hub at the time.
Room sensor details
Fix the sensor temporarily to the wall using the thick black sticky pad, for the first two weeks. Once the customer is happy with the position they can use the long thin sticky pads provided to stick it to the wall.
With ‘M’ flashing on the screen screw the valve down onto the
radiator valve.
If using the Danfoss RA adapter, the adapter needs to be secured to the radiator first with use of the
Allen key provided, before the valve is screwed onto the
adapter.
Location. The recommended mounting height
is 1.6m. Don't let the device face the window or be in direct sunlight. Don't let the device face the source of heat such as a radiator. The
best position for a room sensors in not on an
external wall and next to a light switch.
Tip. The sensor needs to be positioned
somewhere in the room where it has a good view of people sitting down,
or where they
spend most of the time in the room.
Page 22
22
9. Setting up a house with no radiator valves or
room sensors
By default the app includes a zone named ‘Whole House’. If the customer is not planning on using any radiator valves or room sensors, then you will need to create one zone, generally called the name of the house. The customer can set up the timings as described in the User Guide in this single zone which will control the boiler and therefore all of the radiators in the house.
Page 23
23
10. Testing the system
Once all of the devices are in their final location. Check with Heat Genius technical support that they are communicating ok.
Note: Error messages appear i
f the wireless devices fail to
communicate successfully with the Hub. Error messages can take a long time to show, as in the case of the room sensors it needs to have been 2 hours without communication for them to register an error.
If there is an error with any of the devices then it is likely that they either need to be moved into a location where they are closer to a smart plug, the boiler controller or Hub, or one of the smart plugs needs to be moved slightly closer to the problem device.
Manual test
To test the valves are communicating with the Genius Hub first set all of the rooms to Override at 28º for 60 minutes.
Check that the boiler controller comes on (the red LED turns to green and the boiler fires as normal).
Check that the central heating pipe from the zone valve or boiler gets hot.
STOP!
The smart plugs will not work effectively unless
Heat Genius technical support configures the
wireless network
Please phone Heat Genius before you continue
Page 24
24
Wait 10 minutes for all of the valves to check into the hub to get the new setpoint temperature.
To make sure the radiator valves have received the signal from the Genius Hub any of the three buttons can be pressed to light up the screen. Each valve should read the same as the temperature that was selected for the Override, i.e. 28º. There
may be a short delay before the screen comes to life as the valve communicates with the Genius Hub.
If you are still within 10 minutes of setting the Override in each room, check that all of the radiators are COLD and not HOT! This check ensures that the valves are properly mounted on the radiators and they can turn the radiators off. The valves will
take a minimum of 15 minutes to react when first installed on the radiators.
Cancel the Override then check the boiler controller goes back to showing a red LED.
Wait 10 minutes and check that all of the radiator valves revert back to showing 4º when a button is pressed.
Repeat the same test for the hot water, to check that when you override the hot water on the app the correct valve opens and the pipe to the hot water tank gets hot.
If there is an error with any of the devices then it is likely that they either need to be moved into a location where they are closer to a smart plug, the boiler controller or Hub, or one of the smart plugs needs to be moved slightly closer to the problem device.
Note: Error messages appear if the wireless devices fail to communicate successfully with the Hub. Error messages can take a long time to show, as in the case of the room sensors it needs to have been 2 hours without communication for them to register an error.

12. Troubleshooting
Can’t logon to my Genius Hub
Is the phone/tablet/computer connected to the internet?
Is the Genius Hub connected to the broadband router and
powered on?
Check that there is Internet in the house (visit Google on a web browser connected to the local WiFi and search for something).
Check that the Ethernet cables are plugged in – remove and replace a few times to remove any dust.
Reboot your broadband router and wait 10 minutes for it to come back online.
Turn off the Genius Hub at the plug wait 10 seconds and then power it on, wait 10 more minutes for it to reconnect to the Heat Genius servers. (Remember that cup of tea?)
Offices and techie households
If you connect the Genius Hub to a business or commercial network then your IT department may have a firewall stopping the Genius Hub connect to the outside world! You need to ensure that ports numbered 1221, 1222 and 1223 are open to inbound communication. Without this your Genius Hub will not be able to connect to the Heat Genius servers and you will not be able to connect to it from outside the property.
Cannot communicate with the Boiler Controller
If the boiler controller does not communicate with the Hub then the smart plug will need to be put in between the boiler controller and the Hub. Think about what would be stopping the signal, and remember that it travels in straight lines between the device and the Hub. Use the smart plug to bridge the gap between the boiler controller and the Hub.
If there is still no connection with the boiler controller then another smart plug will need to be placed in between the problem device and last smart plug.
Page 27
27
Cannot communicate with the battery-powered devices.
If a device does not communicate with the Hub then a smart plug will need to be put in between the problem device and the Hub. Try to think about what might be stopping the signal and remember that it travels in straight lines between the device and the Hub.
Move the smart plug that is closest to the problem device closer to the problem device. Then try Fix node on the app.
