SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Warning
To avoid possible electric shock or personal injury, and to avoid damaging the tester or the equipment being tested:
• Do not use the CT103 in any way not detailed in this manual or the tester’s safety features may be compromised.
• Never use the tester to detect the presence of voltages higher than 500V (AC or DC).

Shock Risk
• The CT103 cannot detect the presence of voltages below 110V. Use caution whenever detecting AC voltages above 42VAC
RMS
or DC voltages above 60VDC. Both pose a shock hazard.
• Before using the tester, inspect the case. Do not use the CT103 if the case is damaged. Look for cracks or missing plastic. Pay particular attention to the insulation around the connectors.
• Do not operate the tester around explosive gas, vapor, or dust.
• When using the probes, keep your fingers behind the finger guards. Never touch the metal ends of the probes when making a measurement.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
To detect the presence of AC or DC voltage and identify its level, insert the test leads into an electric outlet (see Fig. 1 on the bottom of the next page) or carefully touch the leads to two points of an energized circuit.
3
• If 110V is present, the bottom neon bulb on the tester will glow.
• If 220V is present, the bottom two bulbs will glow.
• If 277V is present, the bottom three bulbs will glow.
• If 460V is present, all four bulbs will glow.
Each bulb has two filaments. If only one filament glows, the voltage is DC. If both filaments glow (making the bulb appear brighter), the voltage is AC.
To detect voltage at a two-wire AC outlet, insert either test lead into the narrow “hot” slot and touch the other lead to the metal mounting screw (see Fig. 2).
To determine which slot of a three-wire AC outlet is “hot”, insert one lead into the lower (ground) slot and the other lead into both upper slots in turn (see Fig. 3). The bulb will glow when the lead is in the “hot” slot.
