SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANTSAFETYNOTICE:
The California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act requires the Governor of
California to publish a list of substances known to the state to cause cancer, birth defects or
other reproductive harm, and requires
businesses to warn customers of potential
exposure to such substances.
Gas appliances can cause minor exposure
to four of these substances, namelg benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehgde and soot,
caused primarilg bg the incomplete combustion of natural gas or LPfuels.
Properlg adjusted burners, indicated bg a bluish rather than a gellow flame, will minimize
incomplete combustion. Exposure to these substances can be minimized further bg
venting with an open window or using the ventilation fan.
When you get your cooktop, have the
installer show you the location of the gas shut-off valve and how to shut it off if
necessary.
Have your cooktop installed and
properly grounded by a qualified installer, in accordance with the installation instructions.
Ang adjustment and service should be
performed onlg bg qualified gas range
installers or service technicians.
Plug your cooktop into a 120-volt
grounded outlet only. Do not remove the
round grounding prong from the plug. If in
doubt about the grounding of the home electrical sgstem, it is gour personal
responsibility and obligation to have an ungrounded outlet replaced with a properlg
grounded three-prong outlet in accordance with the National Electrical Code. Do not
use on extension cord with this appliance.
Be sure all packing materials are removed
from the cooktop before operating it to prevent fire or smoke damage should the packing
material ignite.
Be sure your cooktop is correctly adjusted
by a qualified service technician or installer for the type of gas {natural or LP) which is to
be used.
Do not attempt to repair or replace any
part of your cooktop unless it is specifically recommended in this manual. All other
servicing should be referred to a qualified technician.
Do not leave children alone or unattended where a cooktop is hot or in operation.
Theg could be seriouslg burned.
CAUTION: Itemsofinterestto
children should not be stored in cabinets above a cooktop-children climbing on the
cooktop to reach items could be seriouslg injured.
WARNING: NEVERusethis
applianceas a space heaterto heat or
worm the room. Doing so may result
incarbon monoxide poisoningand overheatingofthe cooktop.
Clean the cooktop with caution. Ifa wet sponge or cloth is used to wipe spills on a hot cooktop, be careful to avoid steam burns.
Do not clean the cooktop with flammable or volatile cleaning fluids.
Do not clean the cooktop when the appliance is in use.
Avoid scratching the cooktop with sharp instruments, or with rings and otherjewelrg.
Let the burner grates and other surfaces cool before touching them or leaving them where
children can reach them.
Never use the cooktop as a cutting board.
Never wear loose-fitting or hanging garments while using the appliance, Be careful when
reaching for items stored in cabinets over the cooktop. Flammable material could be ignited if brought in contact with flame or hot surfaces
and may cause severeburns.
For your safety, never use your appliance for warming or heating the room.
Do not use water on grease fires. Never pick up a flaming pan. Turn the controls off. Smother o flaming pan on a surface burner bg covering the pan completelg with awell-fitting
lid, cookie sheet or flat trag. Use a multi- purpose drg chemical or foam-tupe fire
extinguisher.
Flaming grease outside a pan can be put out bg covering it with baking soda or, if available, bu using a multi-purpose drg chemical or foam-tgpe fire extinguisher.
Do not store flammable materials near the cooktop. Do not store or use gasoline or other
flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinitg of this or ang other appliance.
* Donotletcookinggreaseorotherflammable *
materialsaccumulateonornearthecooktop.
Never leave surface burners unattended at high flame settings. Boilovers cause smoking
and greasy spillovers that may catch on fire.
Adjust surface burner flame size so it does not extend beyond the edge of the co@ware.
Excessive flame is hazardous.
Use only dry pot holders-moist or damp pot
holders on hot surfaces may result in burns from steam. Do not let pot holders come near open flames when lifting cookware. Do not use a towel or other bulky cloth in place of a pot
holder.
To minimize the possibility of burns, ignition of flammable materials and spillage,
turn cookware handles toward the side or center of the cooktop without extending
over adjacent burner or vent area.
Always turn the surface burners to OFF before removing the cookware.
Foods for frying should be as dry as possible.
Frost on frozen foods or moisture on fresh
foods can cause hot fat to bubble up and over the sides of the pan.
Use least possible amount of fat for effective shallow or deep-fat frying. Filling the pan too full of fat can cause spillovers when food is
added.
Carefully watch foods being fried at high flame setting.
If a combination of oils or fats will be used in frying, stir together before heating, or as fats
melt slowly.
Do not use a wok on the cooking surface if the wok has a round metal ring that is placed over the burner grate to support the wok. This
ring acts as a heat trap, which may damage the burner grate and burner head. Also, it may cause the burner to work improperly. This may
cause a carbon monoxide level above that allowed by current standards, resulting in a
health hazard.
Always heat fat slowly, and watch as it heats.
Use a deep-fat thermometer whenever possible to prevent overheating fat beyond the smoking point.
Do not flame foods on the cooktop. If you do flame foods under the hood, turn the fan on.
Use proper pan size-avoid pans that are
unstable or easily tipped. Select cookware
having flat bottoms large enough to properly contain food and avoid boilovers and spillovers, and large enough to cover burner grate. This will both save cleaning time and prevent
hazardous accumulations of food, since heavy spattering or spillovers left on cooktop can ignite. Use pans with handles that can be easily grasped and remain cool.
o
Keep all plastics away from burners.
o
To avoid the possibility of a burn, always be certain that the controls for all burners are at
the off position and all grates are cool before attempting to remove a grate.
If the cooktop is located near a window, do not use long curtains which could blow
over the burners and create a fire hazard.
If you smell gas, turn offthe gas to the cooktop and call a qualified service technician.
Never use an open flame to locate a leak.
Do not cover or block the area around the cooktop knobs. This area must be kept clear
for proper ventilation and burner performance.
Cook meat and poultry thoroughly-meat to at least an INTERNALtemperature of 160°Fand
poultry to at least an INTERNALtemperature of
:!80°F.Cooking to these temperatures usually
protects against foodborne illness.

Electronic ignition &
relight
To light
a burner
The surface burners are lit by electronic ignition.
All burner igniters make clicking sounds and spark even when only a single burner is being
turned on. Do not touch any of the burners when the igniters are clicking.
The burners on this cooktop relight
automatically if the flame goes out. This helps prevent the inconvenience of having to manually
relight a burneE Occasionally, the burners may spark if excess
wind or draft blows the flame awag from the burner's flame sensoE
Push the control knob down and turn it counterclockwise to the desired position from
HI to LO or simmer (SIM). After the burner ignites, turn the knob in either
direction to adjust the flame size.
To turn a burner off, turn the knob clockwise,
as far as it will go, to the OFFposition.
All of the burners can be used for both general cooking and simmering.
The X-High setting is intended for use with !0" or larger cookware.
Do not operate a burner for an extended period of time without cookware on the grate.
The finish on the grate may chip without cookware to absorb the heat.
In case of a power outage, you can light the surface burners on your cooktop with a match.
Hold a lighted match to the burner; then turn the knob to the HIGH position. Useextreme caution
when lighting burners this wag.
Be sure the burners and grates are cool before
you place your hand, a pot holder, cleaning cloth or other materials on them.
The indicator light on each knob verifies the
burner is "ON"; however, it should not be a substitute for visually checking the flame
at the burner.
Be sure you turn the control knob to "OFF" when cooking is complete.
How to
select
flame size
Watch the flame, not the knob, as you reduce heat.
The flame size on a gas burner should match the
cookware you are using. FOR SAFE HANDLING OF COOKWARE, NEVER
LETTHE FLAME EXTEND UPTHE SIDES OFTHE COOKWARE. Ang flame larger than the bottom of
the cookware is wasted and only serves to heat the handle.
NOTE:The X-High setting produces an extra I large flame. Use 10" or larger diameter
cookware when using high heat settings.

Using Your Cooktop
Gas Cooktop
Cookware Aluminum: Medium-weight cookware is
recommended because it heats quickly and evenly. Most foods brown evenly in aluminum
cookware. Use saucepans with tight-fitting lids for cooking with minimum amounts of water.
Cast Iron: If heated slowly, most cookware will give satisfactory results.
Enamelware: Under some conditions, the enamel of some cookware may melt. Follow
cookware manufacturer's recommendations for cooking methods.
Glass: There are two tgpes of glass cookware- those for oven use only and those for surface
cooking (saucepans, coffee and teapots). Glass conducts heat very slowly.
Dual-flame
spill-proof
burners
All burners on your cooktop have two rows of flames. These dual-flame burners have a simmer
(lower) flame and a main (upper) flame.
When a burner is turned on, the simmer flame will always light and stay on.
Heatproof Glass-Ceramic: Can be used for either surface or oven cooking. It conducts heat very slowly and cools very slowly. Check
cookware manufacturer's directions to be sure it can be used on gas cooktops.
Stainless Steel:This metal alone has poor heating properties, and is usually combined with
copper, aluminum or other metals for improved heat distribution. Combination metal cookware
generally works satisfactorily if it is used at medium heat as the manufacturer recommends.
Simmering: The simmer (SIM)setting will use only the lower flames. Usesimmer (SIM)to melt
chocolate, hold delicate sauces or for other
foods requiring low simmer heat.
Primary Cooking: Settings from LOto HIwill use both rows of flames. UseLOto HI for all purpose cooking.

General information
Stainless steel surfaces
Proper care and cleaning are important so your cooktop will give you efficient and satisfactory service. Follow these directions carefully in caring for it.
Some cooktop models are provided with cleaners. Follow the instructions on the
containers.
Do not use a steel wool pad; it will scratch
the surface. To clean the stainless steel surface, use
warm sudsy water, a stainless steel cleaner or an all-purpose liquid or spray cleaner. Always scrub in the direction of the grain.
Rinsethoroughly with a sponge or cloth and
clean water. Dry with a soft, clean cloth. After cleaning, use a stainless steel polish, such
as Stainless Steel Magic_>,Revere Copper and Stainless Steel Cleaner®or Wenol All Purpose
Metal Polish®. Follow the product instructions
for cleaning the stainless steel surface.
Before cleaning any part of your cooktop, be sure all burners are off and cool.
Use a stainless steel brightener when stainless steel isexposed to high heat and has a yellow appearance. Stainless steel cleaner is for other cleaning. Follow the product instructions for proper cleaning methods. If you need an additional supply, you can purchase them by calling 800.626.2002.
Control knobs
The control knobs may beremoved for cleaning. To remove knob, pull it straight up. The knobs have a tactile grip surface, but no
special cleaning is required. Wash the knobs in soap and water but do not
soak. Avoid getting water down into the knob stem holes.
Replace the knobs after drying. DO NOTattempt to clean gour knobs in a
dishwasher.
NOTE:The knob stem is "D" shaped. Replace the flat side of the knob onto the flat side of
the stem.

Burner grates
Cast-iron burner grates should be washed regularly and especially after spillovers. Wash them in hot, soapy water and rinse with clean water. Dry grates with a clean cloth. The grates may also be cleaned in a dishwasher.
When replacing grates, be sure that they are positioned securely over the burners.
Arc
Model ZGU384: Replace the two side grates so that a continuous "arc" is formed with the center
ribs of both grates. Hake sure both grates are stable and level.
Arc .....
To get rid of burned-on food, place the grates in a covered container or plastic bag. Add 1/4 cup
of ammonia and let them soak for 30 minutes. Wash, rinse well and dry.
Although they are durable, the grates will gradually lose their shine, regardless of the best care you can give them. This is due to their continual exposure to high temperatures.
Do not operate a burner for an extended period of time without cookware on the grate. The finish on the grate may chip without
cookware to absorb the heat.
Rubber Grate Feet
For stability, the base of your grates has rubber feet. If any of these feet should become damaged or lost, replace them immediately.
Toorder replacement rubber grate feet, please call our toll-free number:
National Parts Center ........... 800.626.2002
Rubber Grate Feet Part No ...... #WBO2T10101
Arc Arc _"
Model ZGU385: Replace the two side grates with their locking rails toward the center grate so that
a continuous "arc" is formed with the center ribs of all three grates. Hake sure the center grate is
locked into position over the rails on the side grates and that all grates are stable and level.
