Tips for Charging the Device

Connect the charger securely to the device to charge it using

the USB cable (Charging the Device, page 1).
You can charge the device by plugging the USB cable into a
Garmin® approved AC adapter with a standard wall outlet or a
USB port on your computer. Charging a fully depleted battery
takes up to two hours.
Remove the charger from the device after the battery charge

level reaches 100%.

Hold to turn the device on and off. Select to turn the backlight on and off.
Select to choose an activity profile. Select to start and stop the timer. Select to choose the highlighted menu item. Select to view more information.
Select to scroll through the screens, pages, options, and settings.
Hold to open the music controls for your smartphone.
Select to return to the previous screen. Select to mark a new lap, when the lap key function is
enabled. From the time of day screen, select to view the menu.

Using the Backlight

• At any time, select to turn on the backlight.
NOTE: Alerts and messages activate the backlight automatically.
• Customize the backlight behavior during activities (Customizing the Backlight for Activities, page 8).

Charging the Device

WARNING
This device contains a lithium-ion battery. See the Important Safety and Product Information guide in the product box for
product warnings and other important information.
NOTICE
To prevent corrosion, thoroughly clean and dry the contacts and the surrounding area before charging or connecting to a computer. Refer to the cleaning instructions in the appendix.
Align the charger posts with the contacts on the back of the

device, and connect the charging clip À securely to the device.

Training

Going for a Run

The first fitness activity you record on your device can be a run, ride, or any outdoor activity. The device comes partially charged. You may need to charge the device (Charging the Device,
page 1) before starting the activity.
Select , and select an outdoor activity profile.

Go outside, and wait while the device locates satellites.

Select to start the timer.

Go for a run.

The timer appears. You can select to view more data pages.
After you complete your run, select to stop the timer.

Select an option:

• Select Resume to restart the timer.
• Select Save to save the run and reset the timer. You can
view a summary of the run.
• Select Discard > Yes to delete the run.

• Select Free to run outdoors or indoors, at your own pace,
(Training Indoors, page 2) without running mode alerts. NOTE: This is the default run mode.
• Select Run/Walk to set run and walk intervals for a run
(Using Run and Walk Intervals, page 2).
• Select Virtual Pacer to help improve your pacing ability
(Running With the Virtual Pacer Feature, page 2).

• Select Intervals to create an interval workout based on
distance or time (Interval Workouts, page 2).

Training Indoors

You can turn off GPS when you are training indoors or to save battery life. When GPS is off, speed and distance are calculated using the accelerometer in the device. The accelerometer is self-calibrating. The accuracy of the speed and distance data improves after a few outdoor runs using GPS.

NOTE: You must set up the run/walk intervals before starting a
run. After you start the run timer, you cannot change the settings.

Virtual Pacer
Virtual Pacer is a training tool designed to help you improve your performance by encouraging you to run at the pace you set.
Running With the Virtual Pacer Feature
NOTE: You must set up the Virtual Pacer feature before starting a run. After you start the run timer, you cannot change the settings.

Go for a run.

Each time you exceed or drop below the target pace, a message appears. The device also beeps or vibrates if audible tones are turned on (Setting the Device Sounds, page 8). After you turn on the Virtual Pacer feature, it is used each time you go for a run until you turn it off or enable a different run mode.

Interval Workouts

You can create interval workouts based on distance or time. The device saves your custom interval workout until you create another interval workout. You can use open intervals for track workouts and when you are running a known distance.

Creating an Interval Workout

Interval workouts are available for running, biking, or cardio activity profiles.
Select , and select an activity profile.

NOTE: If you are using a running profile, the interval workout
is a run mode. Select Intervals > Edit > Interval.

Select Distance, Time, or Open.

TIP: You can create an open-ended interval by setting the
type to Open. When you select , the device records the interval and moves to the next interval.
If necessary, enter a distance or time interval value.

interval. Select one or more options:

• To set the number of repetitions, select Repeat.
• To add an open-ended warm up to your workout, select
Warm Up > Turn On.

Cool Down > Turn On.

Stopping an Interval Workout

• At any time, select to end an interval.
• At any time, select to stop the timer.
• If you added a cool down to your interval workout, select to end the interval workout.

Alerts

You can use alerts to train toward specific time, distance, calories, and heart rate goals.

Setting a Recurring Alert

A recurring alert notifies you each time the device records a specified value or interval. For example, you can set the device to alert you every 30 minutes.
Select , and select an activity profile.

Setting Your Heart Rate Alerts

You can set the device to alert you when your heart rate is above or below a target zone or a custom range. For example, you can set the device to alert you when your heart rate is below 150 beats per minute (bpm).
