1. Technical data

Please read and follow these
operating instructions carefully.
Familiarise yourself with the unit’s
features, its proper use and the
safety instructions included.

For safety reasons chil-

dren under the age of 16
or people who are not familiar
with these operating instruc­tions should not use this
hedge trimmer.

Please keep these operating
instructions in a safe place.

2. Operating instructions information

The GARDENA Hedge Trimmers
400 / 54 S are designed for cutting
hedges of private gardens.

They are not designed for use in
public facilities, parks, sporting
grounds, on roads, in agriculture
or forestry.

It is essential to observe the
manufacturer’s operating instruc­tions to ensure the unit’s proper
functioning. These instructions
also contain advice for service,
maintenance and repair.

grass/grass edges and for
chopping up for composting.

3. Product use

Slide hand guard (1) into guiding
device of the 3-point guide handle
(2) (ill. A).

Mount the 3-point guide handle
onto the unit and secure it with
4 screws (ill. B).

4. Assembly (ill. A/ B)

The Hedge Trimmer is equipped
with a two-hand safety switch
to prevent accidental switch-on.
To operate the Hedge Trimmer,
it is necessary to use both hands
for pushing the switches. Take

the 3-point guide handle (2) with
one hand and press any one
of the three switches (3). With the
other hand take the handle (4)
and press switch (5). The Hedge
Trimmer will then start to operate.

To stop the trimmer, simply re­lease one of the switches. An
additional safety device ensures
blade stop within 1 second after
switching-off, according to the
legal regulations.

Checks before
each operation

Inspect the unit before each
use. Do not use the Hedge
Trimmer, if safety devices (two­hand switch, blade stop, hand
guard, impact protection)
and/or the blades are damaged
or worn. Never bypass safety
devices.

Inspect the area to be cut be­fore and during work. Remove
any foreign objects.

If, in spite of care, there is
an obstruction when cutting,
turn off the Hedge Trimmer
and remove it.

A Use / Responsibility

This Hedge Trimmer can cause
serious injuries!

Use the unit only for the pur­poses specified in these oper­ating instructions.

Do not overload the Hedge
Trimmer – to work better and

safer do not exceed the given
power consumption.

Keep the guide-handle dry
and free from oil and grease.

You are responsible for the
safety in the working area.
Keep the area of work tidy.
Untidiness in the area of work
can cause accidents.

Make sure that there are no
other people (especially chil­dren) or animals anywhere
near the working area.

7. Advice for proper use / Safety instructions

Impact Protection (ill. D)

The projecting guide (6) prevents
kick-back when striking a solid
object.

Cable Lock / Extension Cable

(ill. E)
Loop the extension cable and
insert it into the cable lock (7).
This prevents unintentional
separation of the electric con­nection. Then connect it to the
mains cable.

Safety Clutch

(Slipping Clutch)
The safety clutch protects motor
and gear from mechanical da­mage caused by jammed blades.
If the blades are jammed by a
solid object, disconnect the trim­mer from the mains and remove
the object.

The safety devices in­stalled onto the unit by

the manufacturer must not

be removed or bypassed, e.g.
by tieing a switch down to the
handle.

Never use an incomplete
machine or a machine with
inadmissable change of
design.

To avoid unintentional start,
never carry the Hedge Trimmer
at its button switches (3).

Repairs may only be carried
out by GARDENA Service
Centres or dealers authorised
by GARDENA.

Attention: Before any

repair, check and mainte­nance jobs, always disconnect
the Hedge Trimmer.

The Hedge Trimmer blades
should be cleaned after each
use and lubricated with an oil
of low viscosity (e.g. spray-oil).

Blade Cover (ill. F)
For safe storage and transport
as well as to protect the blades,
use the blade cover.

Store the Hedge Trimmer in a dry
place where it is protected from

frost. Take care, that it is stored
out of the reach of children.

Warning: The safety

slipping clutch has a high­tension, preloaded spring and
must not be dismantled.

A

Damaged blades must be

properly repaired without
delay.

If you have any problem with your
Hedge Trimmer, please contact
our Customer Service or return
the defective unit together with
a short description of the problem
and, in case of guarantee, with
the warranty card duly completed
and signed, directly to one of
the GARDENA Service Centres
listed on the back of this leaflet.

We expressly point out that,
in accordance with the product
liability law, we are not liable
for any damage caused by our
units if it is due to improper
repair or if parts exchanged are
not original GARDENA parts
or parts approved by us, and
if the repairs were not carried
out by a GARDENA Service
Centre or an authorised spe­cialist. The same applies to
spare parts and accessories.

Do not wear loose clothes,
jewellery, etc. They could get
caught in the trimmer. Wear
sturdy working shoes, gloves
and an eye protection. Wear
long trousers to protect your
legs.

Ensure secure foothold during
operation of the machine,
especially when using steps.

Ensure that you have secure
foothold whilst working. The
extension cable should always
be kept away from the cutting
area. Attention! Take extra
care when walking backwards.
You may stumble.

Keep the motor casing and
ventilation free from obstruc­tions, leaves and other similar
things.

Do not use the Hedge Trimmer
in the vicinity of flammable
liquids and gases.

If the blades get jammed,
please disconnect the unit
and remove the object (thick
branch, foreign body).

Only work when visibility is
good.

A Interrupting work

Never leave the Hedge Trim­mer unattended in the working
place. If you stop work, store
the Hedge Trimmer in a safe
place. Disconnect the mains
plug!

Should you stop work in order
to get to another working place,
always switch off the Hedge
Trimmer to go there. Discon­nect the mains plug!

Always attach the blade protec­tion for transport and storage
of the unit.

A Work place safety

Make yourself familiar with
the surroundings and look out
for dangers which you may
not detect due to machinery
noise.

Never use the unit when it
rains or in damp/wet areas.

Do not operate the Hedge
Trimmer in or near swimming
pools and garden ponds.

A Electrical safety

Check the power cable re­gularly for damage and signs
of wear and tear.

The Hedge Trimmer must
only be operated with an un­damaged electrical cable.
If the mains- or extension cable
is damaged, disconnect the
mains plug immediately. The
power cable must only be ex­changed by an authorised elec­trician. Please contact your
GARDENA Service Centre.

The socket of an extension
cable should be waterproof.

Only use permitted extension
cables. Ask your electrician.

For portable units which are
used outdoors, we recommend
to use a residual-current device
having a residual-current rating
≤ 30 mA.
In Switzerland use of a fault
circuit breaker is obligatory.

Never carry the Hedge Trimmer
by its cable. Never use the
cable to pull the connector
plug out of the mains socket.

Protect the cable from heat,
oil and sharp edges.

The product must not be added to normal household waste. It must be
disposed of properly.

purchase). This guarantee covers
all serious defects of the unit
that can be proved to be material
or manufacturing faults. Under
warranty we will either replace
the unit or repair it free of charge
if the following conditions apply:
.The unit must have been

handled properly and in keep-

ing with the requirements of
the operating instructions.
Neither the purchaser nor a
non-authorised third party have
attempted to repair the unit.

.The unit has been returned

directly to a GARDENA
Service Centre, postage paid,
together with the completed
and signed warranty card and
proof of purchase.

The blade and eccentric drive
are wearing parts and are
not covered by the guarantee.

This manufacturer’s guarantee
does not affect the user’s
existing warranty claims against
the dealer/seller.

In case of claim cut out the
warranty card and send it
together with the unit to the
GARDENA Service Centre.
