General Information
The GAI- Tr onic s Centra-Page s ystem provides dependable p aging and party-line communications f or
rugged and hazardou s industrial fac ilities. Centr a-Page systems feat ure centrally- loc ated electronics that
provide envir onmental pr otection and unitized amplifica tion for easy maint enance. S tandard C ent ra- Page
cabinets can support up to 30 handset stations, and in most cases, up to 60 speakers. Alarms and telephone
interf acing can als o be added to Centra-P age systems.
The Model 478-002 Desktop Station is used for paging and party-line communications. Equipped with a
pus h- to-page handset and pa rty- line s elect or, the station is easy to u se.
To generate a page, the station user lift s the handset, c hecks for an availab le p arty line, presses the handset
pres sba r while announcing their page making s ure to indic ate which p arty line they are using, and relea ses
the pr es sba r. The paged individu al then goes t o a st ation, tur ns the part y- line s elect or swit c h to the
approp riate party line, lifts the handset , and answer s the page. T wo- way communica tion can then ta ke
place on the p ar ty li ne.
Although t here is no absolute limit on the number of stations in use on a given int ercom path (part y line 1
or 2) , for a “conference” ca ll, the effectiveness of t he si det one rejection circuit diminishes , and overall
perf ormance begins to diminish when four or more sta tions a re connected t oget her. It is therefore
recommended that “conference” c all pa rty line conver sat ions be limited to fou r simult aneous u sers.

Installation in Centra-Page Systems
1. Remove the two s c rews on t he back and the t wo screws on the bottom of the s ubset .
2. Hinge the hous ing f orward, b eing careful of the ha rness still interconnected. This p rovides a c c es s to
the ter mination bloc ks on the PCBA (mounted on the subset base assembly a s shown in Fi gure 2) .
3. Field wiri ng c able is u ser-s upplied. W iring shou ld c onsist of three twis ted and individually shielded
pairs of No. 18 AWG (white and black, brown and yellow, a nd red and b lue when using GAI - Tr onic s
Model 60051-001 wire).
4. Spade lug the wires, and connect them to the 6-p oint ter mina l block.
5. Included in a n envelope is a st rain-relief bushing. Us ing a pa ir of pliers, fit the b u shing around the
cab le and into the cable entrance on t he s ubset. The b ushing will protect the cab le entranc e.
6. Feed the ca ble into the condu it tha t ru ns to the cent ral c abinet.
7. The terminal bloc ks for each st ation (one sta tion per terminal block) a re on the cha ssis that is mounted
on the ba c k of the card rack. These blocks are labeled like the bloc ks in the desktop station. Make
sure that the wire colors for each lug match the one in the station.

Maintenance
The following table lists some of the most common difficulties encountered in Model 478-002 Desktop
Stations . Inclu ded are some troubles hooting hints to aid in remedying these prob lems.
2. Adjust the volume contr ol at t he cent ral c abinet ( Centra-P age
systems only).
3. Rep lac e the integral speaker.
4. Replace the 70.7 V line matching transformer.
The reed switch may be defec tive. Si mula te r eed switch operati o n by
disconnect ing the reed switc h at t he t erminal board, and s horting
(connect) pins 1 and 2 or J3 and J4. This should c ause the station to
go off hook. If it does, the defective reed is pr obab ly defective and
requires rep lacement. (The reed swit c h is located under t he handset
cradle. Contact a GAI-Tronics S ervice Center for f u rther
information).
Rep lac e the receiver element located i n the hands et.
1. Keep all mechanical parts well lub ricated. This will help avoid
gumming and jamming due t o wast e b uildup.
2. A defective stat ion c ard in the central ca binet can cau se numerous
problems. If a station is non-functional, try switching 69037 cards
with a known good sta tion.
