General Notes
1 Customers with Cable Modems
The FDX 840 is a combined ethernet router and Broadband Voice Telephone Adapter. It is designed to connect between your cable modem and the rest of your home network, which might be a single PC or a number of PCs and games consoles. Situating your home network behind the FDX 840 (i.e. LAN side) ensures that Broadband Voice does not get disrupted if you decide to upload data from the PC over the internet whilst using the telephone. If you have multiple PCs or games consoles in the home then you are likely to already possess an ethernet router. If so, then connect its WAN port to the LAN port of the FDX 840.
2 Customers with ADSL Routers
If you have a combined ADSL modem/router, then the position of the FDX 840 relative to your home network may depend on how your home network connects into the ADSL modem/router. If the connection to your ADSL router is hard wired via an ethernet cable, then we recommend that you connect the FDX 840 in between your ADSL modem/router and your PC/home network. If however your PC/home network connects to your ADSL router using for example, wireless or USB, then although your FDX 840 connects into the ADSL router using ethernet cable, data traffic from your PC/home network will not go via your FDX 840. This doesn’t matter, but voice quality does improve if home network applications are fed into the LAN side of the FDX 840 rather than bypassing it and going direct into the ADSL router.

Step 1
Position the FDX 840 near to your broadband cable modem or ADSL router in the upright stand. Ensure there is some space above it in order to prevent problems with overheating.
Take account of proximity to mains power and optionally to standard telephone sockets. (It is possible to plug the FDX 840 into the standard telephone service so that if the mains power to the FDX 840 or the internet connection fails, then it is still possible to make telephone calls from the Broadband Voice phone over the standard telephone circuit. This is an optional feature of the device and if not required then simply leave the line socket unplugged).
Ensure that your broadband cable modem or ADSL router, FDX 840 and your home networking interface (PC/ethernet router/hub) is powered off.
With the FDX 840 disconnected from mains power, take the following steps to set up the FDX 840 connections, starting with the WAN port and ending with the Line port.
Step 2
You will be connecting the FDX 840 to the broadband cable modem or ADSL router using the existing ethernet cable that is used to connect the cable modem/ADSL router to your home network.
The WAN port of the FDX 840 is designed to be connected into your Cable Modem/ ADSL router via a straight ethernet RJ-45 cable. Assuming your cable modem/ADSL router is currently connected to either your PC or to another device such as an ethernet router, then unplug the existing ethernet cable from your PC/ ethernet router and connect it to the WAN port of the FDX 840.
Step 3
The LAN port of the FDX 840 is designed to connect to your PC, home networking ethernet hub or home networking ethernet router.
The FDX 840 automatically allocates a singleor multiple private IP address(es) to the device or devices attached to the LAN port.
Using the blue LAN cable provided, plug one end into the LAN port of the FDX 840 and the other end into your PC/ethernet router (the same socket as the one you removed your existing cable from in Step 2).
You can use the blue ethernet cable provided to connect the FDX 840 to your PC or ethernet router/hub. We provide a single 2m length cable, but longer or shorter cables can be purchased from computer stores.
Step 4
Connect the master socket adapter supplied into the RJ-11 port labelled “Phone 1”. Then attach a standard touchtone telephone into the master socket adapter. This is your Broadband Voice telephone handset.
The “Phone 2” connector is currently not used, but may be offered in the future.
Step 5
The LINE port allows the FDX 840 to connect to your existing telephone line.
It gives your Broadband Voice handset the dual characteristics of both a PSTN extension and an individual Broadband Voice line.
If you want to use this feature then connect the LINE port to your telephone socket using the connecting lead provided (RJ-11 to BT phone socket cable).
This connection is “optional” and allows calls to be made from the Broadband Voice telephone over the traditional Telephone Network (PSTN) if:
a the internet fails
b you choose to route an individual call
or call type over the PSTN
c the power to the FDX 840 fails
Step by step set up guide
continued
109
It is possible to configure the FDX 840 to route particular calls over the telephone network rather than Broadband Voice, e.g. 999 or 09 calls. If your nearest telephone socket is already occupied with a telephone already then you will need to purchase a “phone doubler”.
If you use this optional feature then your Broadband Voice phone will ring when the 05 number is called, and also when your PSTN line is called. You will know if an outgoing call is made over the telephone network since the green LED marked “PSTN” will light up. Also you can force calls made from the Broadband Voice phone over the PSTN courtesy of a small switch on the back of the FDX 840. If you only want your Broadband Voice phone to have the characteristics of the 05 line, then do not plug the “line” socket to the PSTN and ensure the micro-switch on the rear of the FDX 840 is switched to "VoIP” (Voice over IP i.e. Broadband Voice).
Step 6
Ensure that the micro-switch is in the VoIP position. (If it is switched to PSTN then the phone is connected permanently through to the LINE port and through to the PSTN, provided you have connected the lead in Step 5). Calls made over the PSTN will be charged at the rates defined by your PSTN provider.
Step 7
Once all the above connections have been made, apply power to the equipment in this order:
1 Apply power to the cable modem/ADSL
router first. Wait about two minutes for it to start up and establish connectivity to the internet.
2 Apply power to the FDX 840. Wait two
minutes. You should see the Green Power LED indicator light up and remain lit. The Status / Alarm light will flash red. The WAN light should be green.
3 Apply power to the PC or ethernet
router connected to the LAN port of the FDX 840 (assuming you have connected your PC/ home network to the FDX 840 LAN port). The LAN light should then be lit green.
Note: During normal use, you should leave the FDX 840 powered on continuously. You do not need to unplug it when not in use.
Step 8
For PCs that are plugged either directly or via an ethernet router to the LAN port of the FDX 840
Power up your PC and then start your web browser. In the address bar, type http://192.168.192.1. Then press enter. When prompted enter the User Name admin and the password admin.
Note: The FDX 840 defaults to supplying IP addresses to your PC / home network using DHCP. If you have a PC directly connected to the LAN port of the FDX 840 (as opposed to connected via a router) then
your PC will receive a private IP address in the 192.168.192.X range. If you have an ethernet router attached to the FDX 840 LAN port then the router will receive a
192.168.192.X address on it’s WAN port (which is directly connected to the FDX
840). Typing 192.168.192.1 in your WEB browser address bar will connect your PC through to the FDX 840 in either case.
For PCs that are accessing the FDX 840 via the ADSL router and consequently the WAN port of the FDX 840 (i.e. not accessing the FDX via the LAN port)
For configuration of the FDX 840, we recommend using a PC plugged into the LAN port of the device. However, if you connect the FDX 840 to an ADSL router then it is still possible to access the device via it’s WAN port. Simply log onto your ADSL router and examine the DHCP / routeing table to discover what IP address has been allocated to the FDX 840. Then type that address in your Web browser address bar and enter the User Name admin and the password admin when prompted.

Step 9
The first page of the Setup Wizard (pictured below) will open. Click on the “Continue” link to proceed.
Step 10
For initial configuration of the service, click the first option at the bottom of the window. Clicking the second option allows you to make adjustments to a previous configuration E.g. changing the code from high bandwidth to low bandwidth
Step 11(Step 1 of Wizard)
Enter your User Name, Password and Voice Password within Step 1 of the Wizard. This information was sent to you via e-mail. If you did not receive this information via e-mail, then you need to contact the Broadband Voice Helpdesk on 0800 028 3228.
Once you have entered the information, check it carefully and then click “Continue” to go to the next step in the Setup Wizard. It is vital that the User Name and Password are entered correctly because this will be required next time you log onto the FDX
840. Additionally the Voice Password must be entered correctly since if there is a mistake then your Broadband Voice service will not operate.
Step 12(Step 2 of Wizard)
Step 2 of the Wizard is only for cable customers who supplied a specific MAC address to their ISP and must now enter that same MAC address here.
If you did not supply a MAC address to your ISP or if you are an ADSL customer, then do not alter the MAC address presented in the window and simply click “Continue” to go to the final step in the Setup Wizard.
Step 13(Step 3 of Wizard)
Select the desired bandwidth setting and then “Continue” to go to the last screen of the Setup Wizard.
If your broadband service is delivered at low bandwidth e.g. 150 kbit/sec downstream and 64 kbit/sec upstream then the high bandwidth Broadband Voice encoding is not supported. In this case you must select “low bandwidth”.

Step 14
Click “Continue” in order to progress and save the current settings. You will then be asked to restart the FDX 840. Click “Yes” to this. The FDX 840 will then reboot. If your WEB browser reports that “The page cannot be displayed” then simply refresh the page. You will then be asked for your FDX 840 User Name and password again which will now be your e-mail address and Broadband Voice website account login password, as entered in Step 1 of the Wizard.
Observe the Status / Alarm light on the front of the FDX 840. It will continue to flash red intermittently for up to two minutes and then it should turn steady green. If it continues to flash red after 2 minutes then you have not successfully registered with the Broadband Voice service. You should then consult the next section (Troubleshooting).
Provided the Status / Alarm light is steady green, then lift the Broadband Voice handset and check for dial tone. Check also that the Hook / Ring light under Phone 1 on the front of the FDX is illuminated, but the PSTN light is extinguished.
If you have connected the LINE port to your normal telephone service, then flick the micro-switch on the rear of the FDX 840 to “PSTN”, and check for dial tone. This time check that both the Hook / Ring and PSTN lights illuminate.
Finally flick the micro-switch back to “VoIP” and the service is ready to use!
If you do not get dial tone (with the optional PSTN “line” port disconnected) and the Status / Alarm light flashes red then:
a Connect a PC directly into the LAN
port of the FDX 840. Load up your WEB browser.
b Check that you can access the internet.
Choose a site that you have not accessed before e.g. using a search engine. (otherwise your browser may load a page that has been cached in your machine). This proves that the FDX 840 can talk to the internet via your cable modem/ADSL router. If you cannot access the internet then it is possible that IP addresses have not been allocated correctly between the devices. Power down the Cable Modem/ADSL Router, FDX 840 and PC, and re-power in the sequence (1) the Cable Modem/ADSL Router (2) FDX 840 and (3) PC. Give each device 2 minutes to stabilize before powering up the next device. Now re-check the Status / Alarm light on the FDX 840 and check also if you can now access the internet.
c If the Internet is accessible from the FDX
840 but you still get no Broadband Voice dial tone (Status / Alarm light still flashing red) then check your Voice Password has been entered correctly. A single mistake in the 28 character entry will result in no dial tone. Remember all letters need to be in capitals. There should be no preceding or trailing spaces.
Cable customers that supplied a MAC address to their ISP should also double check the address that is registered with their provider. Then check that this corresponds accurately with the address entered in the Wizard.
Type 192.168.192.1 into your Web browser address bar and enter your User Name / Password when prompted. Go through the Wizard again and check your Voice Password and MAC address (for cable customers) carefully. If correct then continue to the end of the Wizard and exit the Wizard (abandon changes). If you need to adjust any values then complete the Wizard and restart the device.

d Finally if your FDX 840 is connecting
through a router with a firewall enabled, check with the Broadband Voice Helpdesk (0800 028 3228) that the correct ports have been opened up on the firewall. You could try disabling the firewall temporarily to prove whether this is the problem. Note some routers will need re-booting if a firewall is disabled. If in doubt consult the router’s user guide. Note that if you reboot any device, then you may have to repeat the correct reboot sequence in order to get all the IP DHCP processes synchronized correctly.
If you decide to connect the LINE port of your FDX 840 to an existing telephone line socket then you may direct certain calls over the PSTN rather than over the Broadband Voice VoIP line. 999 / 112 emergency services is a good example of a call type that should route over PSTN rather than over the internet.
However if you decide that you want Broadband Voice to be completely independent of your normal telephone service, (i.e you do not connect the LINE port to the PSTN), then this ACR feature should not be used.
Therefore
only if you have the LINE
socket connected to PSTN
, take the
following steps:
a click on “Advanced Settings” within
the Wizard.
b on the left hand side, under the
Advanced Settings menu, click on ConfigIP.
c Under ConfigIP click on ACR
Configuration. You will be presented with 30 maximum entries.
d Press “edit” of entry 1 and type 999 in
under number. Leave “del digit” parameter as zero. Press save and then press exit. There is no need to restart the unit. Settings will be active immediately.
e Repeat the exercise under entry 2 using
“112” instead of 999.
You can also use the ACR Configuration to do the following:
1 Activate automatic call re-routing to
the PSTN line by pressing a preceding digit or PIN.
2 Activate call routeing over the PSTN for
certain telephone numbers or telephone number ranges. For example Broadband Voice does not support calls to 09 premium rate numbers and other number ranges such as personalised numbers (070). You can add these ranges into the ACR list in order to make calls to these numbers from your Broadband Voice handset but over the PSTN.
If you wanted to route calls over the PSTN on demand, without repeatedly flicking the PSTN/VoIP switch at the rear of the unit, you could (for example) implement the dialling of a preceding “9” digit to make the choice.
Press “edit” of the required entry within ACR Configuration, enter 9 in the number and then enter 1 in the del digit column. Press save and then exit. This basically tells the FDX 840 to recognize you pressing a 9, it then routes the call over PSTN but deletes the 9 from the following number that you dial. Similarly if you wanted to activate PSTN routeing using a 4 digit PIN like 1234, then you enter 1234 under the number entry and enter the number 4 in the del digit entry. (del digit stands for delete digits).
If you want to make sure a certain number type always routes over PSTN, e.g. all 09 numbers then you enter under “number” the following: 09T. The T stands for “any following number or string of numbers” and it needs to be a capital T. You could do the same if you wanted all international calls to be charged to your PSTN line… i.e. enter 00T.
You can also add specific phone numbers to the ACR list.
You will always know that a call is being routed over the PSTN rather than VoIP because the PSTN light on the front panel of the FDX 840 will be illuminated for PSTN calls.

You’ll find details of tariffs and Service Features in the Broadband Voice User Guide. Here we’ll concentrate of the most important points.
Notes for Pre-pay customers
Pick up your handset and dial out as normal to make a call. If you are on the pre-pay option, then the first time you do this each day you will hear a message advising you of the current call credits on your account. This message is played to you just before the call connects.
Credits on the pre-pay service are used up by the chargeable calls that you make, but evening and weekend UK calls for up to one hour for each call are free.
All other call types (such as daytime UK, all international and calls to mobiles) will be charged at the advertised rates. If you’ve used up all your credits you won’t be able to make chargeable calls but you can always easily top up your credits online. Just go to
http://bt.com/broadbandvoice/youraccount
(you’ll need your Broadband Voice UserName/E-mail address and Broadband Voice Website Account login/password to hand (note: not Voice Password).
The minimum top up is £5, while the maximum balance you can maintain is £200.
Fax will work in Phone port 1, provided that the high bandwidth option is selected. Note however that if Broadband Voice is used for fax then it is inadvisable to connect the line socket to the PSTN since a fax machine set to auto-answer will then respond to the PSTN line being called.
Unfortunately the FDX 840 does have limitations with respect to the ability to support Caller Display. Not all telephones support this feature when connected to the FDX 840.
Telephones that do support Caller Display on the FDX 840 on a best effort basis are:
• Diverse range of DECT phones e.g. 40XX, 52XX, 53XX, x10
• BT Studio 100, 500
• BT Freestyle 2500
• Lyric 1200
• CD1500 Caller Display unit
• Relate SMS
Telephones that are equipped with Caller Display function but do not display the Caller Identity on the FDX 840 are:
• Diverse 30XX
• Decor 310
• Synergy 3100, 3500
• Converse e.g. 425
• BT On-air 2100 SMS
• Relate SMS
• Quartet 3500 (This phone is not compatible with the Broadband Voice service)
There are many telephones available on the market and BT cannot guarantee a particular handset will support the Caller Display function correctly on Broadband Voice. It is proposed that if Caller Display is required that one of the handsets in the supported list above is used, or that a device like the CD1500 is used in conjunction with your chosen handset. Note that if the Broadband Voice phone rings as a result of the PSTN number being called (due to the LINE port being connected to the PSTN) then the Caller Display will not show the Calling Number. The Calling Number is only displayed when the 05 number itself is called.

The FDX 840 allows you within “Advanced Settings/ACR Configuration” to enable calls to 09 numbers to be made over the PSTN line. This requires a connection from the line port on the FDX 840 to a working standard master/slave telephone socket. These calls will be billed to your normal PSTN line and not to Broadband Voice.
The latest international destinations available to Broadband Voice customers can be found at www.bt.com/broadbandvoice.
Emergency services calls from a Broadband Voice handset are ONLY possible if there is an alternative PSTN line in the premises and it is connected to the FDX 840. The LINE port MUST be connected to the PSTN and the FDX 840 MUST be configured with 999 and 112 in the ACR configuration menu in order for emergency calls to be possible. (see the ACR configuration menu above). It is still highly recommended that you retain and use the traditional phone connection in the event of an emergency.
