Freecom DataTank

Freecom DataTank
High speed data transfer via the USB 2.0 or Firewire port is perfect for saving your data, backing up les, archiving, audio playbacks and any other applications that requires rapid access to les.
For your convenience, the Freecom DataTank is partitioned (one partition) and preformatted before shipment (NTFS le system). If you want to format the Freecom DataTank using a dierent le system, you should rst consider the potential problems you may encounter when using the Freecom DataTank with a computer other than the one used to format the device.

Recommended installation sequence

1. Install the Freecom software.
2. Attach the port cable to the device and plug the power supply into the socket. Then connect the other end of the cable to the port on the computer.
For a more detailed description of hardware and software installation, please refer to Chapter 1-7.

Warning! All data on the DataTank's hard drives is deleted every time the RAID mode is changed.

4.1.1 Double Driveletter (JBOD)

The Double Driveletter option congures the hard disks on your DataTank as separate drives. You will have multiple drive letters, e.g., D: and E:.

4.1.2 Fast (striping)

In the Fast mode, the hard drives on your DataTank are merged and the les are transferred to the two drives by turns, i.e., one le to drive 1 and the next one to drive 2. This has the distinct advantage of signicantly speeding up reading and writing versus using several separate hard drives. The drawback of Fast mode (striping) lies in the fact that if one of the two drives crashes, you will lose all data on the DataTank.
In the next window, you are prompted whether to create an encrypted drive. If the "Create encrypted drive" option is selected, you can move the slider to the desired position (in %) and then enter your password twice in the two designated elds: "Type the password" and "Type the password again to conrm". 4.1.3 Safe (mirroring)

In the Safe mode, all data on the rst drive is also mirrored on the second drive. As a result, only half of the entire storage space on your DataTank is available for use. This oers the benet of high level data security as a backup copy of your data is always made. If one of the two drives crashes, your data is still available on the second drive.
In the next window, you are prompted whether to create an encrypted drive. If the "Create encrypted drive" option is selected, you can move the slider to the desired position (in %) and then enter your password twice in the two designated elds: "Type the password" and "Type the password again to conrm". The One Button Sync preference pane will be installed in System Preferences, and the disk driver and Sync engine will be installed and congured for your system. You will need to reboot your machine after installation for the new drivers to take eect.

6.5.1 Running a backup

No conguration at all is needed. When you press the physical Sync button on your Freecom disk drive, the One Button Sync software will detect the button press and back up your entire system to that drive. The rst backup may take a while, as the entire contents of your hard drive will need to be copied, but successive backups will be much faster as only les that have been changed will need to be copied.

Note: On NTFS formatted hard disks can only be written under Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Under Mac OS X data can only be read.
The example above is a good solution for Windows 2000/XP/Vista users who sometimes exchange data with Windows 98SE/ME PCs.
For storing the data under Windows 2000/XP/Vista both partitions can be used. As the NTFS le system is not recognized by Windows 98SE/ME data to be used on these operating systems must be stored on the FAT32 partition.
Please follow the steps below to adapt the Freecom DataTank for your needs.
