IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS — SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
If you have an extended battery time unit (a unit with separate battery packs), read the warnings below before you go to step 1.
CAUTION
The batteries used in the UPS and battery pack(s) can produce dangerous voltage and high current. The batteries may cause severe injury if their terminals contact a tool or the battery pack’s cabinet. Be very careful to avoid electrical shock and burns from contacting battery terminals while you put in a battery drawer or connect the battery pack(s). Using batteries not supplied by Best Power invalidates any Best Power service agreement.
1.Batteries contain caustic acids and toxic materials and can rupture or leak if mistreated. Remove rings and metal wristwatches or other jewelry. Don’t carry metal objects in your pockets; these objects could fall into the UPS.
2.At no time can any tools be allowed to contact a battery terminal and the UPS cabinet or another battery terminal. Do not lay tools or metal parts on top of batteries.
3.When you connect the battery pack cables, never allow the metal inside the connector to touch a battery’s terminals or the UPS cabinet.
4.Install the battery cables so they cannot be pinched by the UPS cabinet or a battery pack’s cabinet.
5.The green “Grounding Electrode Terminal” bolt on the back of 1.3K models must be connected to the green bolt on the back of each battery pack. This connects the battery pack’s chassis ground (or earth) to the UPS chassis ground (or earth).
6.Protect the battery cables from physical damage.

The battery charges automatically whenever the green Line light is on. To make sure the UPS’ battery can
supply power, let the battery charge overnight, especially if you have
stored
the UPS. You can continue with step 17 before the UPS finishes charging the batteries, but if there is a power outage, the UPS may provide less battery time until the batteries are charged. If you need to change the UPS inverter output voltage, see the section in this guide called “Changing the Fortress’ Inverter Voltage.” This section also explains under what conditions you might want to change the voltage.

CAUTION!
Whenever the UPS “On/Off” switch is on, there may be dangerous voltage present at the UPS outlets. This is true because the UPS battery supplies power even if the UPS is not plugged into the wall outlet.
AVERTISSEMENT!
AVISO
Quando o interruptor “On/Off” do UPS estiver na posição On (ligado), poderá haver voltagem perigosa nas tomadas do UPS. Isto ocorre porque a bateria do UPS fornece energia mesmo quando o UPS não está conectado na tomada.

UPS Monitoring
UPS monitoring is a standard feature of the AS/400 operating system. QUPSDLYTIM is a timer in the AS/400 that tells the system how long to run on UPS power before shutting down. Each AS/400 system is initially assigned a default value for QUPSDLYTIM. Refer to the Uninterruptible Power Supply section in the IBM document “AS/400 Advanced Series Backup and Recovery - Advanced,” SC41-3305 (for AS/400 Models 2xx and 3xx), or “AS/400 Advanced Series Backup and Recovery - Advanced,” SC41-4305 (for AS/400 Models 4xx and 5xx) for information on determining what this value is for your system, or for assistance in changing the value of QUPSDLYTIM.
Caution: *NOMAX tells the AS/400 to use customized shutdown software, and if none is available it
will immediately begin shutdown when utility power fails. Do not set QUPSDLYTIM to “*NOMAX” unless you understand the implications of the *NOMAX function as described in “AS/400 Advanced Series Backup and Recovery - Advanced,” SC41-3305 (for AS/400 Models 2xx and 3xx), or “AS/400 Advanced Series Backup and Recovery - Advanced,” SC41-4305 (for AS/400 Models 4xx and 5xx).

Changing the Fortress’ Inverter Voltage
This section describes how to change the Fortress’ inverter voltage using the front panel keys. (The inverter voltage is the voltage the Fortress supplies when it runs on battery power.)
If you’re not sure whether you need to change the Fortress’ inverter voltage, follow these steps:
a. Find the label on the back of the Fortress that shows the “Input” and “Output” voltages (VAC or volts
AC). Units labeled “110/115/120 VAC” are set to 120 volts at the factory. Units labeled “208 VAC” are set to 208 volts. Units labeled “220/230/240 VAC” are set to 230 volts at the factory. Write down the voltage your unit is set to: _____________
b. Find out the nominal voltage available at the outlet you will plug the Fortress into. Nominal voltage is
the voltage your electrical system is rated for. If you’re not sure what the nominal voltage is, ask your electrician. Write down the nominal voltage: _______
c. If a. and b. match, you do not need to change the Fortress’ inverter voltage. If not, change the
Fortress’ inverter voltage to match the nominal outlet voltage.
To change the voltage, read and follow these instructions carefully. If you have any questions or problems, please see the AS/400 UPS IBM Service Support section for the office to contact.
Read the tips below; then, follow the steps on the next few pages.
• Find the ID label on the back of your Fortress; then, check the voltage. If the voltage is 110, 115, or 120, do not change it to 100.
If the voltage is 220, 230 or 240, do not change it to 200 or 208.
• Usually, the Fortress’ display is off, but it switches on when you press the keys on the front panel. If you do
not press another key for about 60 seconds, the display will switch to runtime, and after another 30 seconds, the display will turn off to save power.
You may notice that the Fortress’ display turns off while you are reading some of the steps below. If this happens more than once, you may want to read through all of the steps before you start following the instructions.
Before you change the voltage, make sure no equipment is plugged into the back of the Fortress.
The Fortress should be plugged in, and the On/Off (1/0) switch on the back of the Fortress should be on (1) so you can change the setpoints.
To change the voltage, follow these steps:
1. First, find out which type of Fortress you have: low-voltage or high-voltage. Low-voltage units supply 110, 115, or 120 volts. High-voltage units usually supply 220, 230 or 240 volts; special high-voltage units supply 208 volts. If you are not sure what voltage the UPS supplies now, check the ID label on the back of the Fortress.
2. You must change the Voltage Setpoint, the High Voltage Setpoint, and the Low Voltage Setpoint. Later steps will explain how to make these changes. For now, use one of the two tables on the next page to find the settings you will need for all three setpoints. Use Table 1 if you have a low-voltage UPS and Table 2 if you have a high-voltage UPS.
Page 33
33
Table 1: Low-Voltage Units
Example:
If you are changing the voltage to 115 volts, your new Voltage Setpoint setting should be “2”; the recommended Low Voltage setting would be “101,” and the recommended High Voltage setting would be “130.”
* Do not use 100-volt settings unless the UPS is specially designed for this voltage.
Table 2: High-Voltage Units
Example:
If you are changing the voltage to 240 volts, your new Voltage Setpoint setting should be “3”; the recommended Low Voltage setting would be “204,” and the recommended High Voltage setting would be “260.”
* Do not use 200 or 208-volt settings unless the UPS is specially designed for these voltages.
3. Write the settings you found in step 2 in the blanks below.
Setpoint Setting Voltage Setpoint __________ Low Voltage Setpoint __________ High Voltage Setpoint __________
4. Now, press the CANCEL and TEST keys at the same time for a few seconds. When you first press the keys,
the UPS will beep. After a few seconds, the Fortress will click, and the display will show “1 0”; this is the first level of setpoints. (Your Fortress Guide describes the setpoints in this level.)
The display shows “1 0”
