WARNINGS
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE DANGER - To reduce the risk of electrocution:
• Always disconnect the HC210 series immediately after using.
• Do not use the HC210 series while bathing.
• Do not store the HC210 series where it can fall or be pulled into water.
• Do not place or drop the HC210 series into water or other liquid.
• Do not reach for an HC210 series that has fallen into the water. Unplug immediately.
WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, electrocution, fire or injury:
• The HC210 series should not be left unattended when plugged in.
• Close supervision is necessary if the HC210 series is used by, on, or near children or invalids.
• Use the HC210 series only for its intended use as described in this manual.
• Never operate the HC210 series if it has a damaged power cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has been dropped or damaged, or any part of the HC210 series has been dropped into water. Return the HC210 series to an authorised service center for examination and repair.
• Keep the power cord away from heated surfaces.
• Never drop or insert any object into any opening or tube.
• Do not use outdoors or operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used.
• Connect the HC210 series to a properly grounded outlet only. See Grounding Instructions.
• At low CPAP pressures, the flow through the mask may be insufficient to clear all exhaled gas from the tubing, and consequently some rebreathing may occur.
• Adjusting the pressure control can result in ineffective therapy. The pressure control must only be adjusted by the clinician.
• Equipment not suitable for use in the presence of flammable anaesthetic, mixed with air or oxygen or nitrous oxide.
• The HC210 series should only be used with masks and connectors recommended by Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, or by your physician or respiratory therapist. A mask should not be used unless the HC210 series is switched on, and operating properly. The vent hole(s) associated with the mask should never be blocked.
CAUTION
• Do not use your HC210 series in close proximity to high frequency apparatus, shortwave or microwave equipment. Emissions from such devices may effect the HC210 series' operation.
• Never block the air openings of the HC210 series or place it on a soft surface such as a bed or couch, where the openings may be blocked. Keep the air openings free of lint, hair or the like.
OXYGEN USE
If supplemental oxygen is used with the HC210 series, the oxygen flow must be turned off when the HC210 series is not operating. This ensures that oxygen will not flow through the tube and accumulate in the HC210 series enclosure.
• The HC210 series should be located in a position where ventilation around the device is not restricted.
• It is recommended that supplemental oxygen be administered at the mask.
• Oxygen should not be used while smoking or in the presence of an open flame.
• The use of oxygen in therapy requires that special care be taken to reduce the risk of fire. Any materials which will burn in air and some that will not are easily ignited and burn rapidly in high concentrations of oxygen. Accordingly, for safety it is necessary that all sources of ignition be kept away from the product and preferably out of the room in which it is being used. "NO SMOKING" signs should be prominently displayed.
• A spontaneous and violent ignition may occur if oil, grease or greasy substances come in contact with oxygen under pressure. These substances must be kept away from oxygen regulators, cylinder valves, tubing and connections, and all other oxygen equipment.
• At a fixed flow rate of supplemental oxygen flow, the inhaled oxygen concentration will vary, depending on the pressure settings, patient breathing pattern, mask selection and leak rate.
DO NOT DISCARD
Cleaning & Maintenance
NOTE: The HC210 series should be cleaned as required.
1. Switch off the HC210 series and unplug from the power socket.
2. Wipe the exterior of the HC210 series with a clean, damp (not wet) cloth and mild dishwashing detergent. Note: do not use harsh abrasives or solvents, or these may damage the HC210 series.
3. Daily - Rinse the breathing tube with warm, soapy water.
4. Replace the air filter when it becomes significantly discolored.
WARNING
• Refer all other maintenance to qualified service personnel.
• Always switch off the HC210 series and unplug the power cord from the power socket before cleaning.
• Never rinse or place the unit in water or allow water to get into the interior of the unit.
• Ensure that the unit is dry before plugging into the power socket.

Grounding Instructions (for CLASS I models only)
NOTE: Models labeled as Class II (Double Insulated) are marked with the symbol and do not require grounding. The following applies to Class I (three wire) models only.
The HC210 series should be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric current. The HC210 series is equipped with a cord having a grounding wire with a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded.
DANGER - Improper use of the grounding plug can result in a risk of electric shock.
Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the HC210 series is properly grounded.
Extension Cords:
If it is necessary to use an extension cord, use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a three-blade grounding plug, and a 3-slot receptacle that fits the HC210 series plug. Replace or repair a damaged cord.
In Canada/USA only:
This product is for use on a nominal 120V circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated (Figure 1). A temporary adaptor, may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adaptor should be used only until a properly grounded outlet (Figure 1) can be installed by a qualified electrician. The green coloured rigid ear, lug, etc extending from the adaptor, must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Whenever the adaptor is used, it must be held in place by the screw.
Figure 1: Grounding methods
If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the grounding wire to either flat blade terminal. The wire with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the grounding wire.

Making The Most Of Your HC210 Series System
Part of the Fisher & Paykel Healthcare philosophy is to design innovative and effective features to ensure your CPAP treatment is always comfortable and simple. The following unique features are available with your CPAP unit.
Using The HC210 Series Proportional Ramp Pressure Mode
Some users, when first using CPAP therapy, find the airflow uncomfortable. To help you fall asleep comfortably, the HC210 series provides a gradual increase in pressure if required. We call this feature Proportional Ramp Pressure (PRP).
To use PRP, follow these simple steps:
1. When the HC210 series is switched on (See 'Getting Started'), it will automatically deliver your set pressure (the green ramp light will be off). To activate ramp mode, simply press the ramp button on the front of the HC210 series (the green ramp light will turn on).
When ramp mode is activated, it will allow you to fall asleep as the unit gradually increases the pressure over a period of 20 minutes until set pressure is reached. Pressure will start at a minimum of 3cmH20 (if pressure is less than 9cmH20) or 1/3 of set pressure.
Note: To deactivate ramp mode, simply switch off the HC210 series (See 'Getting Started'), pause for a few seconds, then switch it back on.
2. Activating Ramp mode during the night: If you want to activate ramp mode during the night, simply press the ramp button on the front of the HC210 series.

Compliance Monitoring
Sometimes CPAP users find that when they wake in the morning, they have taken their CPAP mask off while they were sleeping.
CPAP therapy is only effective while the user is wearing the mask. Clinical studies have shown that the use of heated humidification increases the amount of time that CPAP is used overnight, which is why Fisher & Paykel Healthcare have designed the HC210 Series for easy conversion to heated humidification.
Compliance monitoring provides you and your medical practitioner with the information you need to assess your progress with CPAP therapy ie. Machine on time, Average hours of use per night, Check sum, and Set pressure.
When the HC220 Series is first turned on, the compliance display will show the following pieces of information for 8 seconds each before returning to the default display - set pressure.
1. Machine on time (identified by the hr symbol) This is the total number of hours that the HC210 Series has been switched on (this includes hours with the mask on and hours with the mask off).
Example:
This means that the HC210 Series has been switched on for a total of 634 hours.
2. Average hours of use per night (identified by the hr/ symbol) (HC211 only) This is the average number of hours that the HC210 Series has been used with the mask on each night.
Example:
This means that the HC210 Series has been used with the mask on for an average of 7.4 hours per night.
3. Check sum (identified by the symbol) (HC211 only) This is a number which can help your medical practitioner to check that the other values are correct.
Example:
Your medical practitioner or homecare provider may ask you to give them this number for reporting purposes.
4. Set pressure (identified by the cm H2O symbol) This is the pressure which the HC210 Series is set to in cm of H2O – for pressure measurement.
Example:
This means that the HC210 Series has been set to a pressure of 9.5 cm H2O. Note: The display will continue to show only set pressure. To see the other information, simply turn the HC210 Series off, pause for 3 seconds, then turn it back on.
NB) If the key symbol [ ] is displayed alongside set pressure, it has been locked and cannot be adjusted. Please consult with your medical practitioner or Homecare provider should you wish to change your recommended therapeutic pressure setting.
