Extender AKM MAAP Installation Guide

This guide provides instructions for an experienced technician to install the Extron Extender AKM MAAP into an Ackermann® ﬂoor box that accepts a GB2 or GB3 insert.

To ensure correct equipment placement and operation, this installation procedure should

be performed by authorized personnel only.

Preparing the Installation Site

Take the following steps to prepare the installation site:

1. Determine and obtain the electronics, MAAPs (Mini Architectural Adapter Plates), and cables required for this installation.

2. Turn off all equipment, including the Extender, and disconnect it from the power source.

3. Select an installation site that allows cable runs without interference. Allow enough depth

for both the ﬂoor box and the cables.

4. Install the ﬂoor box in accordance with the instructions Ackermann provided with the ﬂoor box.

5. Route all cables required for the installation through the ﬂoor box and terminate the cables

with connectors, if needed.

Exposed cable shields (braids or foil) are potential sources of short circuits. To prevent short circuits, shields should be trimmed

back or insulated with heat shrink. Both braided and foil shields should be connected to an equipment ground at the other end of the cable.

Identifying the Parts

The Extender AKM MAAP assembly, shown at right, consists of the four metal pieces (main enclosure, upper mounting plate, lower mounting plate, and nut bar), the blank MAAP plates, an Extender line driver, and the screws that hold it all together.

Installation and Cabling

1. Unpack the Extender AKM MAAP and any optional MAAPs. Save all the screws for

• Each faceplate assembly has four #6-32 x ¼" to 3/8" long Phillips pan head screws.

Use a 9 to 12 VDC power supply only. Polarity is not important. For best results and

to reduce the risk of short circuits, trim just 3/16” (5 mm) of the jacket from the wires. Do not tin the wires.

5. Set the Extender’s gain switch, which will be inaccessible after installation. The gain switch is located at the rear of the Extender, between the two circuit boards. Slide this switch to select the level of video gain that yields the sharpest picture. Refer to the Extender Series User’s Manual (available at www.extron.com).

7. Connect video, audio, and power cables to each device (MAAPs, input/output devices, and Extender) as explained in the documentation that accompanied each device.

8. Attach the MAAPs to the faceplate. a. Place the MAAP module or faceplate on/through the top of the main enclosure. b. Use the included socket head cap screws and Allen wrench to secure the MAAP to the faceplate.

c. Repeat steps a and b until all the MAAPs have been installed.

9. Power up the output devices, the Extender, and the input devices, and test the system.

See “Pre-installation testing/troubleshooting” in the Extender Series User’s Manual for details. All the devices should be powered on and working properly. If not, check the cabling and switch settings and make adjustments as necessary.

10. When testing and adjustments are completed, remove power from all input devices, output devices, and the Extender; and disconnect input cables from the Extender and MAAPs.

11. Lower the main enclosure onto the upper mounting plate and slide it backwards so the tab on the upper mounting plate is inserted into the slot in the lower rear of the enclosure. See the illustration at right.

12. Align the two holes in the enclosure’s front ﬂange with the corresponding holes in the upper mounting plate, and fasten the enclosure securely to the plate using the two remaining Phillips pan head screws.

Take care not to damage the cables during this procedure, and make sure no cables

are caught between the enclosure and the mounting plate.

PRELIMINARY

Mounting the Extender AKM MAAP Assembly into the Floor Box

Follow this procedure to mount the Extender AKM MAAP assembly into the Ackermann ﬂoor box.

1. Slide the lower mounting plate towards the Extender AKM MAAP main enclosure to make the assembly as compact as possible.

2. Orient the Extender AKM MAAP assembly for proper insertion into the ﬂoor box. The front of the Extender and the MAAPs’

connectors must be accessible from the front of the ﬂoor box.

3. Lower the Extender AKM MAAP assembly and cables into the ﬂoor box.

4. Insert the upper mounting plate’s tab (at the rear of the assembly) into the slot in the wall of the ﬂoor box.

5. Pull the lower mounting plate forward, expanding the assembly until the front tab is inserted into the corresponding slot in the ﬂoor box.

6. Tighten the Phillips pan head screws to secure the mounting plates and nut bar. See the illustrations at right for examples of the completed installation.

7. Restore power to all devices.
