Warning

Power sources • This equipment should be operated only from the power source indicated on the product. This equipment is intended to be used with a main power system with a grounded (neutral) conductor. The third (grounding) pin is a safety feature, do not attempt to bypass or disable it.

Power disconnection • To remove power from the equipment safely, remove all power cords from the rear of the equipment, or the desktop power module (if detachable), or from the power source receptacle (wall plug).

Power cord protection • Power cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be stepped on or pinched by items placed upon or against them.

Servicing • Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. There are no userserviceable parts inside. To prevent the risk of shock, do not attempt to service this equipment yourself because opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards.

Slots and openings • If the equipment has slots or holes in the enclosure, these are provided to prevent overheating of sensitive components inside. These openings must never be blocked by other objects.

Lithium battery • There is a danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace it only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

About this Manual

This manual describes the Extron YCS SW2 A Switcher, and discusses how to install, configure, and operate it.

The terms “YCS SW2 A,” “YCS,” and “Switcher” are used interchangeably throughout this manual.

About the YCS SW2 A

The Extron YCS SW2 A is a high-performance, two input, dual output video and audio switcher with transcoding and autoswitching capabilities and digital time base correction (TBC).

The YCS SW2 A has one composite video and one S-video input, which can be switched and transcoded to output simultaneously on a composite and an S-video output. Each input also has

an unbalanced stereo audio input switched to one unbalanced stereo audio output.

Using a 3-line NTSC/5-line PAL digital comb filter, the YCS accepts NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43, PAL, or SECAM composite video, and decodes the signal into Y (luma) and C (chroma) for S-video. As an encoder, it combines Y and C signals and outputs a composite video image.

You can select inputs by pressing the front panel buttons, by enabling autoswitching using a jumper wire, or by contact closure using a remote push-button device.

Certain projectors have both video and S-video inputs, but can use only one of them at a time. Because of this, they usually share one audio input between them. The YCS SW2 A solves this problem by allowing both an S-video source and a composite video source, each with audio, to be connected to this type of projector, and switch between them automatically. The remaining video output can then be used for monitoring or recording purposes. (See figure 1-1 under “Application Diagrams,” later in this chapter.)

The YCS SW2 A can also be used at the output of a multi-format switcher, such as the Extron MPS 112, to automatically select between the video and S-video group outputs, sending a single S-video signal to the projector. (See figure 1-2.)

Features

Autoswitching — The YCS SW2 A can be configured to automatically switch to the active input when the YCS detects a signal, thus providing hands-free switching. If both the composite video and the S-video signals are present, the switcher defaults to input 2, S-video.

Digital encoding and decoding — The YCS SW2 A digitally decodes (separates) the composite video input signal into Y and C for S-video, and encodes (combines) the Y and C signals of S-video input into composite video.

Audio — The YCS SW2 A features a 2x1 switcher for unbalanced stereo audio.

Digital time base correction — Time base correction stabilizes the video signal in the time domain. This results in a significantly more stable image on the screen and better recording quality from input sources with unstable video signals, such as consumer VCRs and worn or multigeneration VHS tapes.

Simultaneous composite video and S-video outputs — One composite video and one S-video output allow for recording and display at the same time.

Contact closure remote control — Inputs can be selected remotely with a user-supplied contact closure device.

Quad standard compatibility — The digital quad standard decoder/encoder provides for universal compatibility.

Enclosure — The YCS SW2 A has a compact 1U high, ¼-rack wide, 3 inches deep Versatools® metal enclosure that can be easily placed or mounted in a variety of locations.

Power supply — An external 12 VDC power supply with a two-pin captive screw connector accepts 100 to 240 VAC.

Rack and furniture mounting — The YCS SW2 A can be mounted on a rack shelf, under a desk or podium, or on a projector pole, with an optional mounting kit.

Installation Overview

To install and set up the YCS SW2 A, follow these steps:

1Mount the YCS SW2 A on a rack shelf, furniture, or projector mount if desired.

2Connect your composite video and/or S-video input source(s) to one or both YCS input connectors.

3Connect your output device(s) to the YCS composite video and/or S-video output connector(s).

4Connect the audio connectors of your input sources to the YCS audio input connectors.

5Connect the audio connectors of your output device(s) to the YCS audio output connectors.

6If necessary, wire the provided 2-pin captive screw connector to the external power supply. (See “Wiring the Power Connector,” later in this chapter.)

7If using autoswitching, insert the provided 3-pin captive screw plug into the 3-pin connector on the YCS back panel, and jumper-connect pins 1 and 2, and 2 and 3, together. (See “Autoswitching,” later in this chapter.)

8If using contact closure for input selection, connect a remote contact closure device to pins 1, 2, and of the captive screw connector on the YCS rear panel. (See “Contact Closure,” later in this chapter.)

9Apply power to the YCS SW2 A and to the input and output devices.

Mounting the YCS SW2 A

The YCS SW2 A can be set on a table; mounted on a rack shelf; mounted under a desk, podium, or table; or attached to a projector mount.

Tabletop use

Four self-adhesive rubber feet are included with the YCS SW2 A. For tabletop use, attach one foot at each corner on the bottom of the unit, and place the YCS in the desired location.

Rack mounting

For optional rack mounting, do not install the rubber feet. Mount the switcher on any of the following rack shelves:

UL rack mounting requirements

The following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) requirements pertain to the safe installation of the equipment in a rack.

1.

Elevated operating ambient temperature — If the

 

equipment is installed in a closed or multi-unit rack

 

assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the

 

rack environment may be greater than room ambient

 

temperature. Therefore, install the equipment in an

 

environment compatible with the maximum ambient

 

temperature (Tma = +113 °F, +45 °C) specified by Extron.

2.

Reduced air flow — Install the equipment in a rack so that

 

the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the

 

equipment is not compromised.

3.

Mechanical loading — Mount the equipment in the rack so

 

that a hazardous condition is not achieved due to uneven

 

mechanical loading.

4.

Circuit overloading — Connect the equipment to

Back of the rack mounting

The YCS SW2 A can also be mounted vertically to the front or rear rack supports, using the optional MBB 100 back of the rack mounting kit (part #70-367-01).

Follow these steps to mount the YCS to the rack supports using the back of the rack mounting kit:

1.

If feet were previously attached to the bottom of the YCS,

 

remove them.

2.

Remove the two screws from one side of the YCS. Retain

 

the screws for possible later reassembly.

3.

Attach one bracket to the side of the unit, using the longer

 

screws included in the mounting kit (see figure 2-4, below).

4.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other side of the YCS.

5.

Mount the unit to the rack support, using the two included

Furniture mounting

To furniture-mount the YCS SW2 A, use the optional VersaTools mini under-desk mounting kit (part #70-212-01), as follows:

1.

If rubber feet were previously attached to the bottom of the

 

unit, remove them.

2.

Remove the two screws from one side of the YCS. Retain

 

the screws for possible later reassembly.

3.

Attach one bracket to the side of the unit, using the

 

provided machine screws (see figure 2-6, below).

4.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other side of the YCS.

5.

Hold the unit with the attached brackets against the

 

underside of the table or other furniture. On the mounting

 

surface, mark the location of the bracket’s screw holes.

6.

Drill 3/32" (2 mm) diameter pilot holes, 1/4" (6.3 mm)

 

deep in the mounting surface at the marked screw

 

locations.

7.

Insert #8 wood screws into the four pilot holes. Tighten

 

each screw into the mounting surface until slightly less

 

than 1/4" of the screw head protrudes.

8.

Align the mounting screws with the slots in the brackets

 

and place the unit against the surface, with the screws

 

through the bracket slots.

9.

Slide the unit slightly forward or back, then tighten all four

 

screws to secure it in place.

Two tools are included with the PMK 450 kit:

A set-screw hex wrench

A security screw hex wrench

To projector-mount the YCS SW2 A using the PMK 450,

1.Unscrew the front and rear plates and the security screws from the sides of the PMK 450.

2.

Slide the top and bottom plates apart.

3.

Loosen the four pipe collar set screws to allow the top

 

plate to move freely along the pole.

4.

Ensure that the mounting pipe is installed with the cable

 

access hole facing the rear, away from the projector screen.

5.

Slide the top plate up the pipe until the pipe collar is

 

positioned just above the cable access hole. Ensure the rear

 

of the top plate is facing to the rear, in the same direction as

 

the cable access hole in the pipe.

6.

Level the top plate and secure it by fully tightening the set

 

screws. At least three screws must come in contact with

 

the pipe.

7.

Route the cables for the devices to be mounted so that the

 

cables exit the pipe through the cable access hole.

Wiring the Power Connector

If using a different external power supply from the one provided with the YCS, you may need to wire the connector for it.

To wire the power connector,

1.

Cut the DC output cord to the length needed.

2.

Strip the jacket to expose 3/16 inch (5 mm) of the

 

conductors.

CExposing more than 3/16” (5 mm) of the copper wires could allow the stripped wires to touch each other, causing a short circuit. This could result in the external DC power supply overheating and/or burning.

Stripping the wires to expose less than the recommended amount may cause them to slide out of the connector too easily, even if they are tightly pinched by the captive screws.

3.

Slide the leads into the supplied 2-pin captive screw plug

 

and secure them, using an Extron Tweeker or other small

 

screwdriver.

4.

To verify the power cord’s polarity before connecting

 

it, plug in the power supply with no load and check the

 

output with a voltmeter.

The figure on the next page shows how to wire the connector.

CDo not tin the stripped power supply leads before attaching the captive screw plug to them. Tinned wires are not as secure in the captive screw connectors and can be easily pulled out. They may also break after being bent several times.

WThe two power cord wires must be kept separate while the power supply is plugged in. Remove power before wiring.

Audio Connectors

The YCS SW2 A has six RCA audio connectors: two left channel inputs (white), two right channel inputs (red), one left output (white) and one right output (red). Figure 2-12 shows the pinout of the RCA audio connectors.

Wiring the Captive Screw Connector

The 3-pin, 3.5 mm captive screw connector is used for optional remote contact closure control of the YCS SW2 A and/or to enable autoswitching between inputs connected to the YCS. The following figure shows the pin assignments for the captive screw connector.

Contact Closure

Pins 1, 2, and (ground) of the captive screw connector enable input switching via a latching contact closure device. If you want to select inputs remotely, you can connect a momentary contact closure device to pins 1, 2, and of the rear panel captive screw connector.

Momentarily short pin 1 to to select input 1; momentarily short pin 2 to to select input 2.

NIf the contact closure inputs remain latched, front panel input switching is disabled.

Autoswitching

You can set up the YCS to automatically select the active, connected input. If both inputs are active, selection defaults to input 2 (S-video). Autoswitching remains in effect as long as the jumper wires are connecting the three pins together.

When autoswitching is in effect, the green Auto Switch LED on the front panel lights, and the front panel input selection buttons are disabled.

To enable autoswitching,

1.

Cut two small pieces of wire to use as jumpers.

2.

Insert the ends of one wire into pin holes 1 and 2 of the

 

provided 3-pin captive screw plug, connecting pins 1 and 2

 

together as shown in figure 2-14, on the next page.

3.

Insert the ends of the second wire into pin holes 2 and 3 of

 

the captive screw plug, connecting pins 2 and

 

(3).

 

 

 

 

4.

Use an Extron Tweeker or other small screwdriver to

 

tighten the plug’s three screws, so that the wire ends

 

remain securely in place.

5.

NThe YCS SW2 A does not have non-volatile memory. Therefore, the input selection defaults to input 1 after a power loss.

Enabling Black and White Mode for NTSC

In order to detect NTSC signals that are black and white only, the YCS must be placed in black and white mode. To enable this mode, use the small jumper that is provided within the unit.

The jumper temporarily connects two pins on the YCS internal board. To make this connection, fit the jumper onto the two pins (“closed” position). To break the connection, remove the jumper from one of the pins (“open” position).

To use the jumper to enable black and white mode,

1.

Remove power from the YCS.

2.

Using an Extron Tweeker or other small screwdriver,

 

remove the four case screws on the sides of the unit.

3.

Gently slide the top cover up and away from the lower

 

housing.

4.

When you open the YCS, the jumper is attached to one of

 

two pins on the internal board, located behind the front

panel buttons (open position). “JMP1” is printed on the board, to the left of the pins.

Lift the jumper off the pin and carefully slide it onto the two pins, so that both pins are inserted in the jumper’s two sleeves (closed position).

CWhen placing the jumper on the two pins, make sure that the fine wire connecting the two sleeves is at the top (outside). Do not attempt to force the pins through the wire.

5. Replace the case cover onto the YCS and secure it with the four screws that you removed in step 2.

NWhen the YCS SW2 A is in NTSC black and white mode, it does not process PAL N and SECAM signals.
