Albert Einstein is probably best known for his famous formula, E=mc
made unparalleled contributions to modern scientifi c thought. In the fi eld of physics, he introduced his special theory
and general theory of relativity and, in 1921, his work on the photoelectric effect won him the Nobel Prize in Physics.
The microscope has been around for nearly 400 years and its invention is credited to 3 eyeglass makers; Hans
Lippershey (who also developed the fi rst real telescope), Hans Janssen and his son Zacharias. The name microscope
was coined by Giovanni Faber, who gave that name to Galileoʼs compound microscope in the 17th century. Galileo
had himself called his microscope “occhiolind” or “little eye.”
The most common type of microscope is the optical microscope which uses lenses to magnify tiny objects, making
them large enough for the human eye to see. Your Einstein Microscope set is an optical microscope. and will allow
you to journey into the microscopic world.

Find your specimen for examination and lay it gently on
a slide (Remember, if the specimen you are observing is
too thick or large the microscopeʼs light cannot penetrate
it and therefore you will not be able to view it through
the microscope). Objects such as fi bers, pollen, wool or
salt should be easily observed and do not require a cover
Objects that are clear or very transparent require a dye be
put on them for viewing. After laying down the specimen
and putting one or two drops of the dying solution, place
a cover glass on it and press down very gently.
The dyeing solutions can stain clothes, carpets
and other fabrics. Be extremely careful when using such
TIPS FOR MAKING GREAT SLIDES
• Remove excess water from the slide with tissue paper.
• Use the razor blade to make objects thin and therefore
easily viewable (Razor blade is extremely sharp, use
• Use tweezers to pick up specimens. When possible
• If the object is not clear or transparent, use a tiny
amount of water instead of a dyeing solution.
• Make sure that few air bubbles become trapped
between the slide and cover glass.
The above instructions are for making temporary slides.
To make a permanent slide, use gum media (or Canada
balsam) instead of a dye or water on your specimen.
Press down the cover glass and let it sit for a day to dry.
