E.W.S. SUBTLE VOLUME CONTROL by Scott Henderson
Knob
INOUT
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for buying the Subtle Volume Control! E.W.S. Subtle Volume Control or SVC is a device
based on Scott Henderson's idea, which provides better control of your overall volume than a traditional
volume pedal. With a volume pedal, the slightest movement of your foot creates a noticeable change in
your volume, which the audience can hear. With the SVC, the level of your guitar can be changed in
much smaller increments, so the audience won't even hear that you've changed your volume. You'll be
able to create a more professional mix between your guitar and the band.
The SVC goes in your amp effects loop. This allows you to control your volume without changing the
gain you have dialed in at the front of the Preamp. The SVC can also be used between your last pedal
and the front of the amp, but keeping your gain consistent while changing volume will not be as effective.
Because the SVC is not an effect, it does not require any power source such as batteries.
The SVC is designed to be placed on your pedal board and foot operated. Since the signal coming from
the amp effects loop is low impedance, the cables running from the amp to the SVC will not degrade the
sound.

Connect the SVC INPUT to the amp effects loop SEND.
Connect the SVC OUTPUT to the effect INPUT.
Connect the effect OUTPUT to the amp effects loop RETURN.
If the SVC is used with another volume pedal (must be a low
impedance volume pedal!) and low impedance effect:
Connect the SVC INPUT to the amp effects loop SEND.
Connect the SVC OUTPUT to the volume pedal INPUT.
Connect the volume pedal OUTPUT to the effect INPUT.
Connect the effect OUTPUT to the amp effects loop RETURN.
If the SVC is used with a mixer: (this is the best way to preserve
the natural guitar tone)
Connect the SVC INPUT to the amp effects loop SEND.
Connect the SVC or volume pedal OUTPUT to the mixer INPUT.
Connect the mixer OUTPUT to the amp effects loop RETURN.
Connect the effect INPUT to the mixer SEND, and the effect
OUTPUT to the mixer RETURN.
Set all the effect programs to 100% wet, 0% dry. To set the

If your amp does not have an effects loop, you can use the SVC
before the amp, but only between your pedals and the amp. If the
inout
guitar is run directly into the SVC, a treble loss will occur:
Connect the SVC INPUT to the OUTPUT of your last pedal.
Connect the SVC OUTPUT to the amp INPUT.

Setting the amp volume:
First you need to decide approximately how loud you'll be playing at your loudest moments. With the SVC turned all the way up, set your
amp to that volume. Now turn the SVC down to somewhere between 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock.
You can always turn it down lower if you need to play softer. When you turn it all the way up, you'll be at your loudest volume. If you need
to be louder, turn up the amp a little more.
