INSTRUCTION

Design

The LHE 200, LHE 300 and LHE 400 are three-phase welding rectifiers consisting of the following main components: three-phase transformer with movable core, three-phase rectifier bridge with silicon diodes, main contactor (LHE 400), switch (LHE 200, LHE 300), cooling fan and thermostat for overload protection.

Welding current settings are infinitely variable by using a crank. This means you can select the right amount of current for the work in hand. LHE 200 is suitable for welding with electrodes up to ø 4 mm, the LHE 300 accepting up to ø 5 mm and the LHE 400 accepting up to ø 6 mm. The welding cable outlets are of the snap-action type which means that polarity reversion is very simple. The LHE rectifiers use a three-phase power supply which is especially advantageous where the main network is weak. It means that smaller fuses and cable areas can be used than for single-phase connection. With the exception of the fan, there are no moving parts and therefore very little wear. Low operating costs and long life expectancy combine to give optimum welding economy.

The LHE rectifiers are suitable for welding alloy and non-alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and bronze. They can also be used for hard facing, cladding and cast iron welding. The rectifiers are fully mobile. They have solid ruber-tyred wheels, a convenient handle and a lifting eyelet for a crane or overhead hoist. Their low centre of gravity gives good balance.

Operation and maintenance

The LHE- rectifiers are fan cooled, air being drawn into the machine through a grill on the back. This air inlet must not be covered while the machine is in use. Grinding operations are often carried out in connection with welding. If so, avoid placing the rectifiers in close proximity to grinding machines. The LHE-rectifiers are manufactured to conform with tamper and drip-proof specifications.

Mains connection

  • 1. The mains supply is connected to the plinth behind the front grill, which is removed by loosening the screws at the top. The grill is then pushed upwards, the lower end is pulled out, and it can then be removed by pulling it downwards.
  • 2. Make sure that the connection plinth is wired for the correct voltage and frequency.
  • 3. Concerning cable area and fuse ratings, see the table listed under Technical data.
  • 4. The welding rectifier is connected to three phases using terminals R, S and T on the connecting plinth.
  • 5. The rectifier must be grounded in accordance with the relevant regulations.
  • 6. Check once more that the rectifier is correctly wired for the mains voltage used.
Operation

  • 1. The welding and ground cables are connected to the outlets at the bottom of the front panel. Polarity reversal is carried out by changing over the welding and ground cable connections.
  • 2. Turn the switch to the "I" position (LHE 200, LHE 300). Press the contactor (LHE 400).
  • 3. Make sure that the air inlet on the back of the machine is not blocked.
  • 4. Using the crank, select the welding current required by the material thickness, the welding electrodes and welding position. The welding current selected is shown by the dial.
Maintenance and service

Under normal operating conditions, the LHE- rectifiers require no maintenance. The only requirement is that they are blown clean annually using dry compressed air at reduced pressure. If the machines are used in dusty conditions, this cleaning should be carried out more often. Where necessary, lubricate the chain and sprocket using Omega grease No.71 or a corresponding heat-resistant grease. When required, the gliding surfaces of the leakage cores can also be smeared with a thin coating of this grease.

Control of diodes

By using ESAB's diode tester, type ZPB, the diodes can easily be checked without removing them from the colling sink.

Never use a bell instrument or buzzer. The ZPB diode tester has order number 160 115-880.

Replacing diodes

The torque for the required diodes is 10 to 15 Nm. When replacing a faulty diode or when tightening a diode, which has loosened for one reason or another, it is most important that the correct tightening torque be applied when the diode is replaced. Insufficient torque results in higher transition resistance, which will result in reduced heat dissipation causing increase in temperature and eventual overheating.

Procedures

  • 1. Connect the diode tester to mains supply of 220 volt AC.
  • 2. Check the diode tester by short-circuiting the two crocodile clips. Both warning lamps should light up.
  • 3. Loosen the top connection of the diode.
  • 4. Connect one crocodile clip to the tip connection of the diode, the other to the cooling sink:
    • a) If one lamp lights up, the diode is in working order
    • b) If both lamps light up, the diode is short-circuited
    • c) If no lamp lights up there is a breakdown in the diode.
  • 5. Repeat items 3 and 4 above on the other diodes.
