2) Adjust the volume to the desired listening level with the On/Off Volume Control. Unsquelch the radio by depressing the Monitor Switch on the side of radio. When the ra dio is uns quelc hed (a rushing sound coming from the speaker), the volume may be adjusted to the desired level.
TO TRANSMIT
WA RN IN G
OPERATION OF THE TRANSMITTER WITHOUT A PROPER ANTENNA INSTALLED MAY RESULT IN PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE RADIO.
1) Hold the radio upright with the antenna in a vertical position with the front grille 2 to 3 inches away from the mouth. Keep the antenna away from the face and eyes.
NOTE
It is nec essary to monitor a channel for activity before transmitting.
TRANSMITTING ON AN ACTIVE CHANNEL MAY INTERFERE WITH OTHERS.
2) Pre s s th e M on it or Button to mo ni to r th e c h an ne l for activity. To avoid interrupting another user,
10

make sure the channel is clear before you begin transmi tt in g.
The TriColor LED loca ted on the top panel can help wi th c han nel moni tor ing. It will glow a mber if RF activity is present; or green if the transmission has a tone that matches a tone programmed for receive in your radio. When this LED is "Off" or not present, the radio is indicating a "clear channel".
3) When the channel is clear, press and hold the PTT bar on the side of the radio, and speak slowly and clearly into the grille area. When you have finished transmitting, release the PTT bar to receive. The LED will glow red when transmitting. This red indicator should be on continuously while the PTT bar is being pressed and the radio is transmitting.
Should the red LED be "flashing", this is an indicati on that the battery needs to be r echarged and t ransmission will cease. Recharge the b atter y before at te mpting m ore t han one tran smis sion.
When finished transmitting, receiving, monitoring, etc., turn the radio "Off" by rotating the On/Off V olume Control fully counterclockwise, to the detent position.

STATUS INDICATIONS AND
A UDIBLE ALERT T ONES
The Mono gram Series Scan Rad io, with its so phisticated microprocessor control, provides a series of audible alert tones.
Upon initial power up, a quick four tone melody indicates that the self test of the microprocessor functions have been completed satisfactorily. A series of tone s may b e sounded wit h any of the fol lowing conditions:
Attempt to "Transmit" on a channel set for
"receive only".

into the ra di o.
NOTE
All audible tones can be programmed "Off" for silent operation.
CHANNEL SCA N
Channel Scan is a programmable feature that allows you to monitor a number of channels. You define a channel "scan list" and a scan channel location (any channel, 1-16) that the list is to be programmed into. Once that channel location is sele c te d, scan is in itiated.
Normal Scan
Once the "Scan L ist" is programmed i nto a chan-
nel scan position, the user can initiate "Scan".
Simply move the ch annel selecto r knob to that
position and the radio will start to "Scan". The
status LED on the top panel can be programmed
to flash green as the radio is scanning.
13
Page 14
If a con v ersa tion is detect ed on any of the channels in the "Scan Li st", th e rad io wi ll st op on that channel and you will be able to hear the conversation. If programmed for "TX on the scanned channel" you will be able to transmit on that active channel during the programmable "Scan Delay" time. The "Scan Delay" time is the amount of time the radio w ill stay on that cha nnel once activity has ceased (programmable, 4-7 seconds is typ ical) . The radio wil l resu me sca nnin g onc e the "Scan Dela y" time has expired. Scanning will continue until the channel is changed.
14
Page 15
OTHER SCANNING FEATURES
"Look Back":
Any channel when not in the scan mode, can be programmed to Look Back" a t the user ’s primary oper ating channel. This feature is ideal for those who do not need scan a s de fined p reviousl y, but want to make sure that they never miss a call on their operating channel if another channel has been selected. Once a "Look Back" channel has been sel ected, the radi o will constan tly scan the primary operating channel. If activity is detected on the primary operating channel, the radio will move to that channel for as long as it remains active.
Scan Cha nn el De let e:
F rom time to time you may wish to temporarily delete a channel from the "Scan List". To do so, simply press the monitor button while scanning and stopped on the channel to be deleted. This will remove that channel f rom th e "Scan L ist" un til the select or is moved from the "Scan List" channel position or the radio’s power is reset. When power is restore d or th e"Sc an Li st" c hann el pos ition is again selected, the original programmed "Scan List" will be activated.
Channel Guard or Digital Channel Guard Scanning:
The radio can be programmed to scan for tone. This will help block out unwanted calls.
15
Page 16
"TX During Scan":
TX during scan has 3
programmable po s s ib ilit ie s.
1) TX on the scanned channel: unit will transmit on the scanned channel if PTT is pressed during the programmed scan wait delay.
2) TX on the selected channel: unit will transmit on the selected channel i f PTT is pressed during the programmed scan wait delay.
3) TX on the lookback channel: unit will transmit on the LookBack channel only.

OPERATIONAL PRECAUTIONS
ln either repe ater o r simpl e x op erat ion, the positioning of the transceiver will change the "talkable distance" significantly. Hold the unit firmly in the palm of your hand to get a good body ground, and find the best positioning to get better receiver quieting; this is likely to provide the best path to reach the other party . Sometimes moving a few feet in the right direction can produce a much better result. ln a margin al area , plac ing t he uni t on a metal su rface, such as a car roof will also help.
Some repeater systems (when using sub audible tone control) require as much as 250 milliseconds for tone recognition. Rapid operation of the PTT may cause the first syllables of words to be clipped.
17
Page 18
The unit is designed for use under a variety of environmental conditions and is MlL-STD 810 D and E approved. Howev er , a few precautions will ensure long life of this transceiver, and they should be heeded without fail.
High Humidity: The Monogram Series Scan radios are not water proof. Ther efore, do not expose directly to continuous rain or submerge in water.
Extreme Heat: Avoid direct exposure to extreme heat. At very high temperatures the nickel cadmium battery tends to self discharge and reduce operating time.
Low Temperature: The unit can operate in temperatures down to -30 degrees C (-22 deg. F. ). How e v er, in e xtr eme co ld, nickel cadmiu m battery capacity is reduced. Try to keep the unit inside your coat if using in a very cold environment for an extended period of time.
ANTENNA INSTALLATION
Instal l the ante nna to the radio by screw ing the antenna into the antenna receptacle on top of the radio.
BELT CLIP INSTALLATION
Remov e slide-on battery pack. Insert top portion of belt cli p in to re cesse d ho le l oca te d on re ar to p of radio bod y . P osition bottom of belt clip ag ainst radio back and re-install battery. Once the battery is re-installed, the belt clip cannot be removed without first re mov in g th e ba tt ery pack.
