1.6 General tanning instruction s
1.6.1 General information
Who can get a tan?
Anyone who can get a tan in natural sunshine. People with sensitive skin will tan more
easily and without risk of burning because the amount of radiation can be accurately
measured on Ergoline sunbeds.
What are the recommended tanning times ?
lthough there is virtually no risk of burning using UV method of tanning, you should
initially pay attention to the sensitivity of individual skin types.
Risk of skin injuries and skin diseases!
Keep to the recommended tanning times. Refer to section 1.7.
How many tanning sessions are necessary?
Here too, it depends upon the tanning ability of the skin type – just as with natural
sunlight under a clear sky. As a general rule, skin that tans normally will have a beautiful
even tan after 3 to 5 sessions of between 4 to 10 minutes. You should tan every second
day. To retain your tan once it has been achieved, between 1 and 2 sessions per week
will be sufficient.
Should I use a suntan cream?
No! Cosmetic suntan creams with a sun protection factor are intended to filter out the
aggressive rays of the sun. Rays of this type are present in Ergoline sunbeds in
extremely small quantities so that this type of protection is quite unnecessary. Instead,
the skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before each tanning session.
We particularly recommend treating the skin with the range of special skin-care products
from Ergoline. Before tanning (pre sun) and after tanning (après sun). This product range
contains a special combination of selected active ingredients: aloe vera extract, jojoba
oil, D-panthenol and elastin. It cleans the skin, helps to slow down the aging p roces s and
adds moisture. This will leave the skin soft, smooth and supple. Th ese lotions can be
pleasantly and easily massaged, penetrating deeply without leaving any residue.
Ask your Ergoline agency about the Ergoline range of products.
Heat erythema
In certain cases, heat erythemas may occur with people with sensitive skin, i. e. the skin
becomes red as a result of the residual infrared radiation (heat radiation). This reddening
is not sunburn and will not impair your health. You should reduce tanning times to enable
the skin to become more gradually accustomed to the tanning process.

1.6.2 General safety instructions
Carefully read Ergoline’s tips for proper tanning.
•=Do not use the professional sunbed if the timer is faulty or the filter panels are
broken.
•=Particular care must be taken by individuals who are especially sensitive to UV
radiation and also with persons taking certain medicines or using certain
cosmetics.
•=Remove cosmetics in plenty of time before tanning and do not use any sun
screening agents.
•=Do not use the sunbed if you are taking medicines that make the skin more
sensitive to UV rays; if in doubt, consult your physician.
•=Consult your doctor if persistent swellings, sores or pigmented moles appear on
the skin.
•=Always use the protective UV goggles provided. Persons who have undergone
eye lens surgery must always wear UV barrier goggles to avoid any risk to the
eyes.
•=Do not tan any part of the body more than once in 48 hours. Do not additionally
sunbathe in the natural sun on the same day.
•=Observe the recommendations given with reference to exposure times and
exposure intervals (refer to section 1.7).
•=UV radiation from the sun or UV devices may damage the skin or eyes. These
biological effects will depend upon the sensitivity of the individual’s skin.
•=Sunburn may occur after excessive exposure. Excessive and frequently
repeated exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or UV devices may result in
premature skin aging and also produce the risk of skin tumors.
•=If unprotected, the surface of the eye may be subject to inflammation and in
some cases excessive exposure may damage the retina. This may result in
cataracts forming after many repeated exposures.
•=The maximum permissible number of exposures per year is 60, 43 or 33 (refer to
section 1.7).
1.7 Recommended tanning times
Risk of injury to skin and eyes
•=Some medicines for internal and external application are capable of significantly
increasing the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays. Examples include: antibiotics,
sulphonamides, psoralen (such as melanin, vitamin-A acid and derivatives).
During and after the application of such similar preparations, we recommend that
you avoid tanning – in natural sun, too. In cases of doubt, consult your doctor.
•=Close your eyes while tanning and use the protective UV barrier goggles
provided (Ergoline product specification no: 84592)!
•=Never use the professional sunbed if a filter panel is missing or damaged.
Risk of skin damage and skin disease
•=The interval between two tanning sessions must be at least 48 hours.
•=A deepening tan will require longer exposure times (= tanning duration) and
once a certain depth of tan is reached you will find that no further progress will
be achieved. However, exposure time must never be extended at random within
the permissible exposure durations (refer to the table). Without damaging health,
this means that the final depth of tan will be determined by skin type.
