Q:Where
Where does the EPSON PowerLite 600p fit in Epson’s
product line?
A: The EPSON PowerLite 600p replaces Epson’s previous SVGA portable
projector, the EPSON PowerLite 5350. In addition to being brighter than
the PowerLite 5350, there are a number of new features that will make
this model extremely popular among resellers and end users. (See
question below for details.)
There is another SVGA portable, the EPSON PowerLite 5600p, in our
product line-up. These two products will coexist in the product line-up
due to their different performance capabilities. The PowerLite 600p will

not have accessory lenses available. So, if a presentation environment
requires lenses, customers should be introduced to the PowerLite
5600p. Additionally, none of the new portables offers a BNC
connection. This might be important to some installers.

What is the target market for the PowerLite 600p?
A: The PowerLite 600p is ideal for educational settings, with a
price/performance ratio that’s perfect for institutions on a budget. This
high-value projector also offers critical features most educators will
appreciate, including the following:
• SVGA resolution – With 800 x 600 resolution, icons and other images
projected on the screen are typically larger and easier to see.
Additionally, SVGA products or accessories are usually less expensive.
• 1700 lumens – Due to its level of brightness, this product can be used
for computer or video presentations, even in well-lit classrooms.
• Compact size (9.3 lb) – With a convenient carrying handle, the
lightweight PowerLite 600p is easily transportable from classroom to
classroom, or across the campus.
• Monitor out capability – This feature enables presenters to
simultaneously view images on their monitor and on the screen. This
allows teachers or professors to use their monitor as a prompt, while
still maintaining eye contact with their students.
•5 watt audio speaker – With this additional sound output, educators
do not have to purchase expensive third-party audio systems. They can
use this convenient, built-in speaker in small to medium-size classrooms
for video presentations or computer presentations with embedded
audio.

What are the major physical differences among Epson
portable projectors?
A: The EPSON PowerLite 810p, 800p and 600p are lighter than their
predecessors by 4.5 lb. In fact, they are as light as our first ultraportable
model, the EPSON PowerLite 5500c. All connections, including power,
are located on the back panel. This makes installation and operation a
little easier. In addition, the lamp cover is placed on top of the projector.
This first-time feature is especially useful when a projector is mounted
from the ceiling and requires a lamp change. Now, the change can be
made without removing the projector.
Unlike the EPSON PowerLite 7700p, 7600p, and 5600p, this entire
line is consistent in terms of inputs and outputs. As far as performance,
the projectors in this line differ only in resolution and brightness.
The new physical design facilitates a whisper-quiet 38db noise level.
This quiet operation makes the projectors less disruptive during
meetings and enables audience members to concentrate on the
presentation.

What is the market outlook for products in this category?
A: Independent research indicates that the 6.6 to 11 lb category makes up
between 45 and 50 percent of the current portable projector market. A
separate piece of information indicates that the brightness category of
1500+ lumens currently accounts for 15 percent of the market.
However, the overall brightness-to-weight ratio continues to improve.
Therefore, we expect to see significant growth in this category. The
new PowerLite 810p, 800p and 600p models will likely contribute to
that growth.
Q:How
The EPSON PowerLite 600p, 800p, and 810p are the first in
the world to offer horizontal keystone correction. How
can resellers make the most of this feature?
Of course, we are still offering the best vertical keystone correction
(30°) in the industry. We continue to lead the market in product
feature development, and the addition of 10° horizontal keystone
correction is a logical next step.
Now, installers have even more positioning flexibility. If the direct line
of sight is obstructed in a ceiling mount installation, installers can now
move the projector 10° left or right and still center the image on the
screen. End users will also have some tabletop positioning flexibility.
At this time, Epson is the only company to offer such flexibility and we
expect to be among the few for quite some time. Including this feature
in our bid business could be extremely advantageous.
What new features add to the projector’s video
Q:What
performance?
A: New EPSON ColorReality technology improves the projector’s color
uniformity and reduces video noise. This feature is the result of a
revolutionary chip, exclusive to Epson. Utilizing this technology, we are
able to offer up to six menu-selectable modes, which presenters can
choose from based on their own unique presentation material or
environment.
Absolute color temperature, gamma and 3D-lookup tables are
optimized for each mode. The modes are translated into six simple

descriptions to allow for suitable mode selection without professional
video knowledge.
The Six Modes
1. Normal (High Brightness) mode (default mode) – When brightness is
a top priority
2. Meeting mode – Increases color saturation and contrast for
presentations held in well-lit rooms
3. Presentation mode – A mid-range position between normal (high
brightness) and sRGB modes; suitable for presenting in dark
environments
4. Theater mode – Expands the gray scale linearization and prioritizes

dark areas of projected images; includes optimized setting for
viewing video in dark rooms
5. Amusement mode – Suitable for projecting television and video games
in well-lit areas
6. sRGB mode – Reduced range of colors to be consistent with CRT
monitors (For applications where color matching across different
displays is required)
Microsoft is already using sRGB in its Windows XP operating system and
is encouraging other imaging equipment manufacturers to use
equivalent standards. NOTE: Projectors have the widest range of color
space, ensuring real life colors. With sRGB, you use the lowest common
denominator within the various devices to achieve a“consistent”color
throughout.

What new communication protocol has Epson incorporated in
its new portable projectors for easier installation and
programming?
A: Designed with installers in mind, Epson’s new portable projectors offer a
set of RS-232 codes, engineered for easy on-site programming. Each
system is now ASCII-based, as opposed to our previous hex-based
coding. More flexible than many competitive models, this intuitive
system will reduce the amount of programming required for each
command. For example, the number of characters used for each code is
not fixed. Some competitors require the code to be a specified length,
no matter what the entry. With the Epson system, each individual code
can be short or long, based on the needs of the installer. The software is
run from a Windows hyper terminal and requires no additional software.
Programmers will appreciate the responsiveness of this system, which
enables the projector to respond in a period that’s close to real time,
once the code has been sent. Installers can save time, and also be
confident the system was programmed accurately, as each command is
acknowledged almost immediately.

What else is new about our video operation?
A. The composite and S-video inputs are now independent connections.
Therefore, the projector does not choose a default signal. This will make
the projector easier to use with both sources.

What other features will end users and resellers
appreciate?
A. The PowerLite 600p has monitor out capability. After some
intermittent availability, this feature is now consistent in the portable
line. Especially useful for educators, trainers, or presenters who use their
desktop monitor as a prompt, this function enables them to face the
audience at all times.

What other features have been added to the portable series?
• 1.35x optical zoom ratio –
This enables the projector to be placed closer to the screen due to a
shorter throw distance. For tabletop applications, this makes it less
intrusive.
In addition, with a 1.3x zoom ratio, you can view a 16:9 or 4:3 image by
simply adjusting the Wide/Tele setting, and not moving the position of
the projector.
• DVI-I connection –
Our previous models had a DVI-D connection, which supports only
digital formats. Since it’s taken longer than we anticipated for this
format to catch on with many end users, we have changed this input to
a DVI-I connection, which is compatible with both analog and digital
signals. The signal type is automatically detected so users don’t need to
know whether they’re providing a digital or analog signal. In fact, we’ve
made it even easier. The Computer1 input on each of the new portables
is the DVI-I connection. For added flexibility, a DVI-HD15 cable will soon
be available as an optional accessory.
• User-friendly remote control and intuitive control panel –
The remote control and control panel have new diagrams and
descriptions. In addition, the remote control offers a page-up, pagedown feature that more closely emulates the same feature on a
computer keyboard. This makes running a multi-slide presentation

• Link Lite software –
A simplified version of our previous Link software, this program enables
users to control the projector from a computer. Available through the
Epson website, this software will not be sold as an optional accessory or
be included with the projector at the time of purchase. By downloading
the program via the Epson website, we’ve eliminated the need for
additional cables.
