Note: If you’ll be connecting your scanner using IEEE 1394 (FireWire,
iLink™), you need to purchase an IEEE 1394 cable (not included).
2Remove all the packing tape, but leave the large sticker in place
until instructed to remove it.

back of the scanner. (Make
sure the cable does not get

cover.) Close the cover.

Wait! You must install your software before connecting the scanner
to your computer. The install process may take up to 15 minutes.
Be sure to close all open programs and turn off any virus
protection programs.
If you don’t already have Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements on your
computer, install Photoshop Elements from the CD-ROM included with your
scanner. To view the Photoshop user manuals, you’ll need Adobe Acrobat
Reader®(included on your Photoshop Elements CD).
Install the Software
®
Windows
First you’ll install Adobe Photoshop Elements, then your scanner software.
Photoshop Elements
1
Insert the Adobe Photoshop Elements CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or
DVD drive. The installer starts automatically.
2Make sure US English is selected and click Next.

3Follow the on-screen instructions to begin installation and accept the
software license conditions.

4When you see this screen, click the Adobe Photoshop Elements
button.

5Follow the on-screen instructions. When you’re asked for a software
serial number, enter the number printed on the sticker attached to the
CD-ROM sleeve.
6If you don’t have Acrobat Reader, eject the CD-ROM and repeat
steps 1 – 3. Then select Adobe Acrobat Reader to install it.
Continue with the instructions below to install the scanner software.
Scanner Software
1Insert the scanner software CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD drive.
The installer starts automatically.
If it doesn’t start, double-click My Computer (in Windows XP, click
Start > My Computer), double-click EPSON, then double-click
EPSON.
2When you see a message asking you to select a language,
click English.
3At the Software Installation screen, click Install.
Click Install
4Read the license agreement, then click Agree.
5Follow the on-screen instructions to install each program. After each
one is installed, click Next or Finish to continue. Note that EPSON
Smart Panel™ installs in several steps. If you have PDA (Palm™ or
Pocket PC) software on your computer, Presto! PixExpress will be
installed.
6Click Exit. The EPSON Product Registration screen appears.
7Register your scanner as instructed. At the last screen, click Done or
close your browser.
Continue with the instructions under “Install SilverFast.”

Macintosh
First you’ll install Adobe Photoshop Elements, then your scanner software.
Photoshop Elements
1Insert the Adobe Photoshop Elements CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or
DVD drive.
2Double-click the or CD-ROM icon and double-click the
English folder.
3Double-click the Install Photoshop Elements icon.
4Follow the on-screen instructions to begin installation, and accept the
software license conditions. In Mac®OS X, enter your Administrator
name and password, then click OK.

5When you’re asked for a software serial number, enter the number
printed on the sticker attached to the CD-ROM sleeve.
6When you see this screen, click the Install button.
Click Install
7Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
8When you’re finished, click Quit.
9If you don’t have Acrobat Reader, you can install it from the CD-ROM.
Open the Adobe Acrobat Reader folder. Then double-click the Reader
Installer icon to install it.
Continue with the following instructions to install the scanner software.
Scanner Software for Mac OS 8.6 – 9.x
Insert the scanner software CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD drive.

(If necessary, double-click the EPSON CD-ROM icon to open it.)
2Double-click .
3When you see a message asking you to select a language,
click English.
4When the Software Installation screen appears, click Install.
Click Install
5Read the license agreement, then click Agree.
6When you see the EPSON Scan Installer, click Install.
When the EPSON Scan installation is complete, click Restart.
Don’t remove your CD-ROM. After your Macintosh restarts,
you can install the rest of your software.
7When your Macintosh restarts, double-click the EPSON CD-ROM
icon to open it, if necessary, then double-click . Click English.
You see this screen:
Click Install
8Click Install and follow the on-screen instructions to install each
program. After each one is installed, click Quit to continue. Note
that EPSON Smart Panel installs in several steps. If you have PDA
(Palm) software on your computer, Presto! PixExpress will be installed.
9Click Exit. The EPSON Product Registration screen appears.
10Register your scanner as instructed. At the last screen, click Done or
close your browser.

Scanner Software for Mac OS X
1Insert the scanner software CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD drive.
2Double-click the EPSON CD-ROM icon and then double-click the
English folder.
3Double-click the EPSON Scan Installer icon.
4Enter your Administrator name and password and click OK.
5When you see the EPSON Scan Installer window, click Install,
then follow the on-screen instructions.
Click Install
6Double-click the Reference Guide icon.
7Click Install to install your Scanner Reference Guide.
When installation is complete, continue with the instructions under
“Install SilverFast.”
Install SilverFast
(Windows and Macintosh)
1Insert the LaserSoft SilverFast SE CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or
DVD drive. The installer starts automatically.
In Mac OS X (or on systems where the installer doesn’t start
automatically), double-click the Autostart icon in the CD-ROM folder.
2Select your language and click Continue.
3Click the Install SilverFast SE icon.

4Select the type of plug-in you want to install:
Photoshop Plugin Installer (for Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop

Elements)
TWAIN Plugin Installer (for other TWAIN-compliant applications)
•
Then click Install SilverFast.
5Click Continue or Next, read the license agreement and click Agree,
then follow the steps on the screen to finish the installation.
Restart your system, then follow the instructions on the back of this sheet
to connect the scanner.

Connect the Scanner
After your software is installed, it’s time to get connected.
1Remove the sticker from the transportation lock. Use a coin to turn
the lock clockwise one-quarter turn to unlock the scanner carriage.

3Connect the cable for the built-in transparency unit to the round
connector on the back of the scanner. You may need to raise the
scanner cover and twist the cable to insert it.

4Connect either the USB interface cable that comes with your scanner
or an optional IEEE 1394 (FireWire) cable. Don’t connect both.
If you’re using USB...
Plug the square end of the USB cable into the scanner’s
USB port. Then plug the flat end into any available USB port
on your computer or USB hub.
Note: Your scanner may not work correctly if you use a USB
cable other than the one supplied by EPSON or if you
connect your scanner to a multi-level USB hub system.
If you’re using IEEE 1394 (FireWire)...
Plug one end of the IEEE 1394 cable (not included) into the scanner’s
IEEE 1394 port. Then plug the other end into the IEEE 1394 (FireWire,
iLink) port on your computer.
5Plug the scanner’s power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
6Press the power button on the front of the scanner to turn it on.
The scanner lamp comes on.

Scanning With Photoshop
1Raise the scanner lid and place your
photo face down on the glass.

2Start Adobe Photoshop Elements.
In Windows, click Start > Programs or All Programs > Adobe
Photoshop Elements 2.0.

On a Macintosh, open the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 folder
(in your Applications folder) and double-click the PhotoshopElements 2.0 icon.
4EPSON Scan starts, pre-scans, and recognizes the type of image
you placed on the scanner, then scans your photo and opens it in
Photoshop Elements.
Note: To fine-tune images, you can use EPSON Scan to make
settings and see a preview before scanning. See your on-screen
Scanner Reference Guide for details.
You can use Photoshop Elements to edit, enhance, save, and print your file.
Using EPSON Smart Panel
You can use your scanner’s Start button to open EPSON Smart Panel,
which gives you several options for scanning. You can also open it by
double-clicking the EPSON Smart Panel icon on your desktop.
In Windows XP, click Start > All Programs > EPSON Smart Panel >EPSON Smart Panel.
Note: The Start button does not support Mac OS X. Smart Panel
is available only as a Classic application.
1Place your photo or document face down on the glass in the top right
corner, then close the lid. (If you are scanning film or slides, see
“Placing Film on the Scanner.”)
2Press the Start button on your scanner.
Note: In Windows XP, you may see a message the first time you
press the Start button. Select Smart Panel for Scanner, clickAlways use this program for this action, then click OK.

EPSON Smart Panel opens on your computer.
3Click the option of your choice to scan:
Copy: Make a quick copy, or several copies, of your document.
Printing with EPSON®color ink jet printers is recommended.
Photo Print: Make prints from your photos, negatives, and slides.
Printing with EPSON color ink jet printers is recommended.
Scan to Application: Scan an image and open it in any supported
application.
Scan to E-mail: If you have a MAPI-compliant e-mail program, scan
an image and automatically attach it as a file to a new message.
Note: AOL®is not supported by this option.
Scan to File: Save your scan directly to a file on your hard drive.
Scan to OCR: Scan a text document and open it in your word
processing application, then edit it and save it as a new file.
Scan to PDA: Automatically format and scan a photo and
send it to your Palm or Pocket PC device.
Scan to P.I.M. File: Save images with an expanded color space and
additional P.I.M. (PRINT Image Matching™) enhancements for printing
with a P.I.M.-enabled printer and P.I.M. application.
Scan to Web: Scan your photos and upload them to the EPSON
PhotoCenterSMphoto-sharing website to share them with family and
friends. To sign up for an account, go to http://photo.epson.com.
4Follow the on-screen instructions to use the Smart Panel options.
On many Smart Panel screens, you’ll need to click Finish to continue
scanning and Launch to start other programs. See your on-screenSmart Panel User’s Guide for detailed instructions.
Placing Film on the Scanner
To scan film, you’ll need to remove the reflective document mat and place
the film in a holder.
Note: To scan slides or medium- or large-format film, follow these steps
but use the correct holder. See your on-screen Scanner Reference Guide
for detailed instructions.
1Make sure the transparency unit cable is connected to the option
interface connector (see step 3 in “Connect the Scanner”).
2Lift the scanner lid all the way up
and pull the reflective document
mat up and off of the scanner lid,
as shown.
3Carefully pop the film cover off
of the film holder. (Don’t remove
the cover from the large format
film holder, just lift it.)

4Slide the film into the film holder,
with the shiny base side
facing down.

6Place the film holder in
the upper right corner,

7Close the scanner lid.
Note: Make sure the notched area
at the top of the film holder is clear
to ensure an accurate scan.
