2. INTRODUCTION
The SMAC series is a new and revolutionary mixer concept, designed by and for PROFESSIONAL DJs, with ECLER’s state of the art performance and roughness. The SMAC PRO40 introduces a new concept in the ECLER DJ mixers line, a compact size mixer with 4 true channels and professional characteristics: balanced outputs, 2 channels with assignable crossfader and three level inputs (PHONO, MIC, LINE). Its new ergonomical design can be seen in the form and distribution of the controls and connections. The SMACs are specially adapted to the latest trends in mixing, manipulation and audio signal processing. The sloped position of the main faders, the KILL system and the position of the PUNCH buttons have been designed under ergonomic considerations. The faders of the main channels, the PUNCH switches and the crossfader have been grouped in an easy-dismounting module. The operating life of the crossfader has been extended up to more than 300.000 operations (30 times more than a high quality mechanical crossfader) thanks to the addition of an Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA). The VCA has also made possible the implementation of a special transfer curve designed under DJ’s considerations. All these components can be substituted by just using a screwdriver because they have multipin connectors. The SMAC PRO40 has 4 mixable channels, with 7 stereo inputs: 3 PHONO, 2 CD (compact disc) and 2 LINE, plus an extra microphone input. All channels have an input lever switch selector and 3-band tone controls. All inputs offer the PFL function in order to monitor any input signal, either visually (through the VU Meter) or acoustically (with headphones).

3. INSTALLATION
3.1. Placement and mounting
The first thing to take into consideration when placing your SMAC is your comfort and an easy access to all the connections. The SMACs is basically conceived as a tabletop mixer and its usual placement will be between two vinyl or CD players. The optional metallic LSMAC side profiles kit allows you to firmly fix your SMAC to the surface over which it is placed or over its own profiles (Fig.1). These profiles also allow to tilt the mixer’s position for an easier operation. Remember that the SMAC mixers have connectors in the front of the bo x and an external connection must be provided when the unit is mounted on a rack. Because of the high gain of the PHONO and MICROPHONE inputs, always try to place the mixer as far away as possible from noise sources (dimmers, engines, etc...) and mains wires. For the very same reason, and under any circumstance, should you ever remove the unit’s metallic cover. The power consumption of the SMACs is very low, so they don’t need an y cooling, but you should avoid extreme temperatures and the atmosphere should be as dry and dust-free as possible. The SMAC PRO40 operates under voltages between 90 and 264 V at 47 to 63 Hz. This device features an over dimensioned power supply that adapts to the mains voltage in any country of the world with no need to make any adjustments. Make sure that the mains wire (which plugs into
32) is far away from the signal cables in order to avoid any possible audio hum.
In order to protect the unit from an eventual electrical overload it carries a 500mA fuse (32). Should it ever blow up, unplug the unit from mains and replace it with an identical one. If the new fuse blows again contact immediately with our Authorized Technical Service. YOU MUST NEVER USE A HIGHER VALUE FUSE.
CAUTION: Fuse substitutions have to be performed by a qualified technician.
3.2. Input signal sources
-Turntables: They must be fitted with magnetic cartridges of 1.77 to 56mV nominal output
level. The PHONO inputs (25) of the SMACs have a very good headroom so they can accept high output level cartridges. If you use moving coil cartridges they must be of high output level type and a transformer or external preamplifier, placed as near as possible to the turntable, must be connected between the cartridge and the mixer.
-Microphones: The Mic inputs (1-33), have a nominal input level of 0.562 to 17.7mV and
are equipped with XLR 3 and 1/4" jack connectors. These inputs allow for the use of balanced wires. Connections are as follows:
XLR 3 1/4" jack HOT or direct signal > Terminal 2 Tip COLD or inverted signal > Terminal 3 Ring GROUND > Terminal 1 Sleeve
6
Low impedance (200 to 600) monophonic microphones must be used. Shortcircuit pins 1 and 2 of the XLR connector or use a mono jack whenever an UNbalanced connection is desired. An stereo jack can also be used for UNbalanced connections if the ring is shorted to ground. CD, magnetophones, cassettes, tuners and video players: they can be connected to the CD or LINE inputs. All these inputs can handle line level signals, but the SMAC’s has dedicated CD (23) and LINE (24) inputs. The CD input sensitivity is +5dBV (1.778V) and the LINE input sensitivity is –5dBV (562mV) so that nowadays sound sources requirements are completely fulfilled. Direct access to the main mix: The SMAC PRO40 mixer have a direct access to the main mix bus that enables the connection of the mixer to external effect units (see 4.6) or to other mixing units.
4. OPERATION AND USAGE
4.1. Start up
To switch the mixer on just push the switch labeled POWER (21) and the green pilot-light inside the switch will light up. Although the switching noise produced by the SMAC PRO40 is very low and almost inexistent when sta rting up the SMACs wit h the OUTPUT (19-20 ) control down, we high ly recommend the "safe power-up seque nce": sound sources , mixer, equalizers, activ e filters and, finall y, power amplifiers. Powering off should be done by following the exact reverse sequence in order to avoid any possible damage to the loudspeakers.
4.2. Prelistening
The SMACs are equipped with a prelistening system that enables the monitoring of the different inputs through the VU-meter and the headphones. The Smac PRO40 has an advanced visual and auditive monitoring system. Two VUmeters unable simultaneous monitoring of the mix (left VU) and PFL or main OUT (right VU). Audio monitoring is independent and the headphones can be fed with the PFL signal or both if the SPLIT function is used. Placing the switch(36) on the SPLIT position will send the MIX signal to the left and the PFL to the right.
4.3. Channel gain
All the SMAC input channels have accessible input sensitivity GAIN (4) controls. These controls have the function of compensating for differences of level existing between the sound sources connected to the table. The gain controls have a variation margin of ±15dB. All GAIN adjustments must he done very carefully using the VU-METER as a reference and avoiding that all the red LEDS of the VUMETER light up, input could be cliped.
4.4. Channel equalization
The 4 SMAC PRO40 channels are provided with a 3-way tone control (5-6-7) of wide range of operation, ±15dB. This wide range enables a progressive KILL effect instead of the sharpness of the ISOLATOR switch (15).
7
4.5.- Removeable / Exchangeable module (Faders, Crossfader with VCA, PUNCH, SHAPE)
The addition of the Voltage Controlled Amplification (VCA) control to the fineness, precision and mechanical strength of the crossfader has resulted in an operating life greater than
300.000 operations. That means that the SMAC crossfader operating life is 30 times greater than a
high quality mechanical crossfader. Once the operating life of the crossfader, SHAPE, PUNCH switches or faders has ended, they can be easily changed proceeding as follows:
1.- Remove external screws of the module.
2.- Remove the module.
3.- Disconnect the multipin connectors.
4.- Remove the screws of the element to be replaced.
5.- Replace the desired element.
6.- Fix the new element to the module.
7.- Connect the multipin connectors.
8.- Place the module and fix the screws.
Always use original ECLER GENUINE SPARE PARTS for your SMAC
4.6. External effect output, EFF
Each mixing channel of the SMAC PRO40 are provided with a rot atory potentiome ter (8 ) to send the signal to an external effect unit: sampler, rever,... The potentiometer controls the signal level send to the external unit. The EFF output (27) must be connected to the input of the effect unit and the output of the effect unit can be connected to the MIX input (26) or to a LINE input. The MIX input is a direct access to the main mix bus and hence, no control is possible. But if a LINE input is used, the signal can be processed as a normal sound source.
4.7. Crossfader assignement
The SMAC PRO40 has a crossfader with VCA and the adjacent channels (Channel 2 and Channel 3) are permanently assigned to it. The remaining channels, can be assigned to any of the crossfader extrems (A-B) by means of the 3-position lever switch (10). This switch can also bypass the crossfader and send the signal directly to the mix bus.
4.8. Crossfader curve adjust:
Thanks to the VCA concept, it's now possible to modify the gain/attenuation behaviour of the crossfader. The SMAC PRO40 provides this feature, enabling you to control the fade-in and fade-out characteristics of the crossfader. The Crossfader knob XF SHAPE (12) at the housings frontplate let you adjust the response curve from soft to hard independently so that you could perform from sharp Scratch to smooth House techniques.
8
4.9. Effects: KILL, PUNCH. The SMAC PR O40 have two groups of lever switches (15). Each group acts only on the
channel they are placed A or B. When the switches are used, the selected frequency range is instantaneously eliminated. So, it is possible to mix the bass of a song (b y eliminating the m edium and treble) with the medium and treble (by eliminating the bass) of another song. The PUNCH switches (13) are also instantaneous . The music is instantaneously insert ed if the crossfader is closed (opposite site of the switch pressed). The level of the punched channel depends on the channel fader. The combination of these elements offers an incredible fan of possibilities for your creativity.
4.10. Outputs Headphones: in order to obtain a high performance, these should be of the high
impedance type (200-600). Plug them to the HEADPHONES, PHONES (16) output, by means of a standard 1/4" stereo jack. Sleeve is Ground, Ring is Right Channel and Tip is Left Channel. The SMAC PRO40 have two main outputs, OUT1 (2 9-30) and OUT2 (28) with indep endent rotative volume controls. A Balance control (36), co mmon t o both outputs , comple tes t he possibili ties of the mixers. You must be careful when setting up the general output level of the mixer. The “clip” display of the connected power amplifiers must never remain permanently lighten up, but do it occasionally by following the rhythm of the bass signals that are being played. The SMACs are factory adjusted to 0dB/1V, though this can be internally adjusted to 10dBV/316mV, +4dBV/1,6V or +6dBV/2V (Fig.2). Just changing some soldering bridges.
ATTENTION: The modification of the output gain must be carried out by a qualified technician.
The SMAC series mixers have a REC output (31) of -10dBV over 10k of load for a nominal level input.
5. CONSIDERATIONS
5.1. Ground loops Ensure at all times that no signal sources reaching the mixing desk and no devices
connected to its output have their earths interconnected; that is, earth should never reach them via two or more different paths, as this coul lead to humming which could even interfere with sound reproduction quality. In order to avoid earth loops, ensure that the shieldings of cables, if connected to the chassis, are never connected with each other.
5.2. Audio connections As a general rule of thumb, make the signal connections as short as possible and use the
best connectors and cable available. Cables and connectors are frequently undervaluated, forgetting that a bad connection can result in a poor sound quality.
9
5.3. Background noise The use of active circuitry can yield, depending on the configuration, to a significant noise
level. The SMAC series mixers have been designed for the minimum possible noise. Anyway, the noise level will always depend on the correct use and installation of the mixer. It is not the same setting up the “FADER” at “2” and the “MASTER” at “10” that the other way round; “FADER” at “10” and “MASTER” at “2”. In th e first case you get a poor signal to noise ratio that will be fully amplified by the master while on the second we have a good signal to noise ratio only amplified by “2”. As a result, the background noise is greater in the first case than in the second one.
5.4. Cleaning The front panel should not be cleaned with dissolvent o r abrasive substances because silk-
printing could be damaged. To clean it, use a s oft cloth slightly wet with water and neut ral liquid soap; dry it with a clean cloth. Be careful that water never gets into the unit through the holes of th e front panel.
