PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes a UL Listed and CSA Certified electric snow melting system
consisting of constant wattage, series resistance heating cables and electronic controller.

A. System for surface snow melting, embedded in concrete, asphalt or underneath pavers,
with ambient and moisture sensing controls.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturers’ Qualifications
1. Manufacturer to show minimum of thirty (30) years of experience in manufacturing
mineral insulated, series resistance heating cables.
2. Manufacturer to provide products consistent with IEEE 515.1 and CSA 22.2 No
130-03 requirements.
B. Installer Qualifications
1. System installer shall have complete understanding of product and product
literature from manufacturer or authorized representative prior to installation. Electrical connections shall be performed by a licensed electrician.
C. Regulatory Requirements and Approvals
1. The system (heating cable, and controller) shall be UL Listed and CSA Certified for
snow melting
2. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labelled as defined in
NFPA 70, Article 100, by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), and marked for intended use.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. General Requirements: Deliver, store and handle products to prevent their deterioration or
damage due to moisture, temperature changes, contaminates or other causes.
B. Delivery and Acceptance Requirements: Deliver products to site in original, unopened
containers or packages with intact and legible manufacturers’ labels identifying the
following:
1. Product and Manufacturer
2. Length/Quantity
3. Serial Number
4. Installation and Operation Manual
C. Storage and Handling Requirements
1. Store the heating cable in a clean, dry location with a temperature range -67°F to
194°F (-55°C to 90°C).
2. Protect the heating cable from mechanical damage.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Extended Warranty
1. Manufacturer shall make available a minimum two (2) year warranty for Mineral
Insulated Cable kits and components. Provide one (1) year warranty for all heat trace controllers.
2. Contractor shall submit to owner the results of all installation tests required by the
manufacturer.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS AND PRODUCTS
A. Contract Documents are based on manufacturer and products named below to establish
a standard of quality.
B. Basis of Design

Manufacturer to show minimum of thirty (30) years of experience in manufacturing mineral insulated, series resistance heating cables.
Manufacturer shall provide UL and CSA approval certificates for snow melting. Manufacturer shall be Emerson – Nelson
b. Mineral Insulated Cable for Snow Melting
Mineral insulated, series resistance heating cables.
SMMC-3 snow/icing melting controller, with SMPS-1 pavement sensor
and/or SMAS-1 aerial sensor OR SS-1 controller [Select one]
2.2 PRODUCTS, GENERAL A. The system (heating cable and controller) shall be UL Listed and CSA Certified for snow
melting.
2.3 PRODUCTS
A. Metal Alloy 825 Outer Sheath, Series Resistance Cable
1. Heating cable shall be mineral insulated cable, series resistance heating cable by
Nelson.
2. The heating cable shall consist of solid conductors, mineral magnesium oxide
(MgO) insulation and metal alloy 825 outer sheath.
3. The heating cable shall be factory assembled with a minimum 7-foot cold lead
(unheated) length.

4. The heating cable shall operate on line voltages of 120, 208, 240, 277, 347, 480 or
600 volts [Select one] without the use of transformers.
5. The heating cable shall be part of a UL Listed and CSA Certified system.
6. The mineral insulated cable tag shall have the following markings: a. Complete heating cable model number b. Agency listings
B. Heating Cable Installation Accessories
1. Snow Melting Caution Sign – The snow melting caution sign is required by national
electrical codes to indicate that an electrical snow melting system is installed in the slab. (Catalog Number: NMPLT)
C. Control Methodology [Select one]
1. [Option 1] Non-Programmable Control a. Single circuit snow/ice melting controller shall be SS-1. b. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall operate with supply voltage of
120V single phase.
c. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall have integrated ambient
temperature and moisture sensors that activate the system when specified conditions exist
d. Enclosure type shall be NEMA 3R polycarbonate. e. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall have a two (2) hour pre-set
hold-on timer
f. Controller shall have cULus approvals.
2. [Option 2] Programmable Zone Control a. Automatic snow/ice melting controller shall be SMMC-3. b. Temperature Sensor shall be SMTS-1 c. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall operate with supply voltage of
120V single phase.
d. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall have an ambient temperature
sensor that is physically separated and operates independently from any moisture sensor
e. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall be capable of supporting up
to six (6) type SMAS-1 aerial and/or three (3) type SMPS-1 slab mounted moisture sensors.
f. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall have an adjustable hold-on
timer (0 – 10 hours).
g. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall have adjustable on/off
temperature settings.
h. Electronic snow/ice melting controller shall be capable of operating up to
three (3) independent zones
i. Enclosure type shall be NEMA 3R polycarbonate. j. Digital controller shall have cULus approvals.
2.4 SYSTEM LISTING
A. The system (heating cable, connection kits, and controller) shall be UL Listed and CSA
Certified for snow melting.
B. The snow melting system shall have design and installation and operating manuals.

PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLERS
A. Acceptable Installers
1. Subject to compliance with requirements of Contract Documents, installer shall be
familiar with installing snow melting, mats and/or cable and equipment.
3.2 INSTALLATION A. Comply with manufacturer’s recommendations in the Mineral Insulated Snow Melting
Cable Installation and Operating Instructions (GA-2398).
B. Install and secure the cable(s) in accordance with the Mineral Insulated Snow Melting
Cable Installation and Operating Instructions (GA-2398).
C. The installer shall be responsible for providing a complete functional system, installed in
accordance with applicable national and local requirements.
D. Grounding of controller shall be equipment according to Section 26 05 26 "Grounding
and Bonding for Electrical Systems."
E. Connection of all electrical wiring shall be according to Section 26 05 19 "Low-Voltage
Electrical Power Conductors and Cables."
F. Ground-fault protection of equipment shall be provided in accordance with NEC 426.28.
3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Field Testing and Inspections
1. The system shall be commissioned in accordance to the Mineral Insulated Snow
Melting Cable Installation and Operating Instructions (GA-2398).
2. Mineral Insulated Snow Melting Cable integrity shall be tested using a
megohmmeter set at 500 Vdc (min) at the following intervals below. Minimum acceptable insulation resistance shall be 20 megohms or greater.
a. Before installing the heating cable b. After heating cable has been attached to welded-wire mesh or rebar
(concrete); affixed to base asphalt layer with binder (asphalt); placed in sand bed (paver)
c. After final pour (concrete); after application of finish coat (asphalt); after
placement of stones (paver)
d. Prior to initial start-up (commissioning) e. As part of the regular system maintenance
3. The installer shall verify that the SMMC-3 snow/icing melting controller control
parameters are set to the application requirements.
4. All commissioning results will be recorded and presented to the owner.
3.4 MAINTENANCE
A. Maintenance Service
1. Comply with manufacturer’s recommendations in the Mineral Insulated Snow
Melting Cable Installation and Operating Instructions (GA-2398).
