The final port is an eight-pin mini-din serial port. The serial port can be used for computer access.
The front side of the unit (see Figure 4) is covered with dark plastic that encloses the infrared device. The infrared device allows you to use your DV4/MT4 as a remote control for home appliances like TVs and stereos.
If you use a screwdriver to remove the two screws in the dark plastic panel, you can lift the panel away from the device. Once the panel has been removed, you will be able to locate the device’s memory storage card. All DV4 and MT4 devices are shipped with a 128 MB Compact Flash storage card. This card is used to store all the files and information you create and save on your device. An empty card slot below the storage card provides room for the installation of a secondary storage card. A second storage card provides additional memory and room for file storage on your device.
Battery Information
The DV4 device has a 7.4V Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery pack. After fully charging this battery pack you can continuously run your device for about 12 hours. The MT4 device is also powered by a 7.4V Li-Ion battery pack. When fully charged, the MT4 battery can provide up to 8 hours of continuous use.
It is possible to extend the daily run time of the device’s battery pack by adjusting the screen brightness. Setting the device to maintain a lower screen brightness will use less power. You can also conserve
Figure 4

battery power by using the backlight timeout feature. Backlight timeout is a low-power state that will cause the device’s touch screen to dim slightly. You can program your device to automatically go into this low-power mode if it has been inactive for a specific amount of time.
Note: Step-by-step instructions for adjusting screen brightness and using backlight timeout are
available in the Basic Step-by-Steps section of this manual.
Another way to conserve battery power is to use the DC adapter/charger that was shipped with your device. If you are near an electrical outlet, you can use your DV4/MT4 while it is plugged in. To use the charger while you are programming your device or using it to communicate:
1. Connect the two pieces of the DC adapter/charger.
2. Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet.
3. Shut down your device.
4. Plug the charger jack into the charger port on the right side of your device.
5. Turn the device back on.
Charging the Battery
When the DV4/MT4 battery begins to run out of power, a small, red battery icon will appear in the title bar at the top of the touch screen. This icon indicates that you should plug in your device to conserve the remaining power. You should recharge the battery as soon as possible. The icon will remain until the battery is recharged.
When the battery runs out of power, the device will power down completely. Any unsaved programming will be automatically saved before the device shuts down. You will need to plug in the charger before you can turn the device on again.
Whenever the DC power adapter/charger is plugged in and connected to the device, the battery is being charged. The amber LED on your device’s case will light up to indicate that the battery is being charged. It will take approximately 9 hours for the DV4 battery to fully charge. The MT4 battery can be fully charged in about 6 hours. When the battery is completely charged, the LED will go out. You cannot overcharge the battery, so do not be concerned about leaving the unit plugged in overnight.
You can charge the device’s battery by following these steps:
1. Connect the two pieces of the DC adapter/charger.
2. Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet.
3. Shut down your device.
Page 13

4. Plug the charger jack into the charger port on the right side of your device.
The amber LED to the right of the touch screen will light up while the device is charging. The light will go out when the battery is fully charged. You can use the device while it is charging.
Caution: Because batteries use a chemical reaction, battery performance will deteriorate over time
even if stored for a long period of time without being used. In addition, if the various usage conditions such as charge, discharge, ambient temperature, etc. are not maintained within the specific ranges, the life expectancy of the battery may be shortened or the device in which the battery is being used may be damaged by electrolyte leakage. If the battery cannot maintain a charge for long periods of time, even when it is charged correctly, this may indicate that it is time to change the battery.
Carrying Your Device
Your DV4/MT4 was shipped with a short handle strap and a long shoulder strap. Both Series 4 devices offer two sets of strap attachment points (see Figure 2 on page 5). To attach a strap to the device, follow these steps:
1. Remove the small split rings from the clips at the ends of the carrying strap.
2. Choose two strap attachment points and thread a split ring onto each one.
3. Clip each end of the carrying strap to a split ring at the strap attachment points.
Transporting Your Device
If you use your DV4/MT4 device while in a wheelchair, you should have it properly mounted for both communication and transportation purposes. Wheelchair mounting systems are available through DynaVox Technologies.
A protective carrying case is also available for transporting your device and its accessories. Consult the DynaVox website at www.dynavoxtech.com or your DynaVox Technologies sales consultant for more information.
Device Care and Handling
To clean your DV4/MT4, first turn the unit off and then wipe it gently with a damp cloth or soft paper towel. You may dampen the towel with a mild window cleaner to remove fingerprints, food particles and dust.
Page 14

10
Do not use tape or stickers on either the touch screen or the plastic case, as they are difficult to remove and may damage the device surface. Tape, stickers and other sticky materials can damage the touch screen and interfere with the operation of the device.
Be sure to avoid getting your DV4/MT4 wet. Never submerge it in water (e.g., dishwater). If your unit accidentally gets wet, be sure to shut it down and allow it to dry thoroughly. If after 24 hours you find that the device seems to function normally, there is probably no damage. If the device fails to function or behaves abnormally, contact DynaVox Technical Support at 1-800-344-1778 for instructions. You may need to ship the device to DynaVox Technologies for repairs.
Be careful not to drop the unit. Such treatment is not recommended and can shorten the life of your device.
Do not use a sharp object to make selections on the touch panel, as this can cause damage. If you need to use a pointer to make selections, be sure it has a cushioned tip. Please use the stylus that was shipped with your device.
Caution: Never, under any circumstances, disassemble your DynaVox Series 4 communication device.
Doing so for any reason will void the warranty, and you will be responsible for the cost of any required repairs.

Section 3: Software Overview
Terms You Should Know
Quick Start uses some basic computer terms and vocabulary that is unique to DynaVox Series 4 software. It is important that you take a few minutes to become familiar with these terms and their meanings. Reviewing this section now will make it easier for you to learn about your DV4/MT4 device.
Pages and Popups
For DynaVox Series 4 software, the primary communication tools are pages and popups. These can be designed and customized to meet your unique physical, visual and communicative needs.
Page - A page contains a collection of buttons that represent words, phrases, sentences, behaviors
or links to other pages and popups. A page covers the entire touch screen below the title bar.
Popup - A popup is a miniature page that is displayed on top of a full size page. A popup usually
contains a group of buttons that are related to a specific topic or activity. A popup can also
contain a miniature Message Window.
Pages and popups can feature various components:
Message Window - The Message Window is an area on a page or popup where a text or symbol message can be composed. When the Message Window is selected, its contents will be spoken by the device. The size and location of the Message Window may vary, but moving from page to page will not delete or alter its contents.
Tab Control - Tab controls are used to navigate between multiple layers of buttons on a page. These layers are called panes. The top of each pane features a tab. A pane is displayed whenever its tab is selected. There can be up to six panes in a set of tab controls.
Button - A button is a graphic object on a page or popup that can be selected with a touch, a mouse click or other input device. It may represent a behavior, a word or even several sentences. A button may feature a text label and/or a symbol, and can be programmed to enact specific behaviors when it is selected. There are several different kinds of buttons:
Symbol Button - This button usually features a symbol and a label. It can be used for communication (with an Insert Label/Insert Text or a Speak Label/Speak Text behavior) or as a command button. Assigning behaviors to a symbol button enables it to perform tasks like speaking, activating a macro or performing an infrared command.
Page 16

Go To Button - This type of button includes a behavior from the Page Navigation category.
Go To buttons are used to link one communication page or popup to another.
Predictor Button - This type of button displays words, phrases and sentences that are predicted by the DynaVox rate enhancement features.
Character Predictor Button - This type of button can be used with (or instead of) a
keyboard page. When a letter is selected, the character predictor button will predict the next logical letter selection. Character predictor buttons can be very helpful to individuals who use the scanning selection method.
Recency Button - This type of button is similar to a predictor button. The words and phrases that are displayed in recency buttons are predicted according to frequency of use.
Label - A label is text that can be placed on a button, tab control, page or popup. Labels can be used as the title of a page or as an indication of the vocabulary in a button.
Symbol - Symbols are pictures that can be used to represent vocabulary. They can be placed on buttons, tab controls, pages or popups. DynaVox symbols are called DynaSyms.
Behavior - A behavior is an action or command that can be programmed into a button. When the button is selected, the assigned behavior will be launched automatically.

Menus and the Title Bar
DynaVox Series 4 software provides special tools to help you maintain and customize your device.
Title Bar - The DynaVox title bar is always displayed at the top of the touch screen. The title bar features a blue DynaVox logo, an arrow button that can be used to open the main pull-down menu, the green Modify button and other active tools. The title bar also includes a ? button that can be used to access descriptions of the items on the touch screen.
Pull-Down Menu - A pull-down menu contains a list of options that is displayed only when the menu is active. When it is inactive, this menu appears to be a labeled bar. An arrow inside the bar indicates that the menu can be opened. To see all the pull-down menu options, select the menu and it will expand to its full size. Select one of the options to close the menu. When the menu is closed it will display only the selected option.
Window - A window is a box that appears on the touch screen to show you a menu, inform you of an error, ask you to enter text or request a confirmation.
Menu - A menu is a group of tools with related functions that can be used to customize and maintain your device. Menus can include buttons, viewports, scroll buttons, sliders, check boxes and text boxes. Menus are presented in windows.
Browser - A browser is a type of menu that contains a viewport and buttons. The buttons provide tools for customizing the item that is selected in the viewport. Browsers are used to navigate through multiple options and to customize user information like pages, popups, vocabulary words and concepts, sounds and songs.
Title Bar
Pull-Down Menu
Page 18

Like pages and popups, menus feature several smaller components.
Viewport - A viewport is an area on some menus where a list of files or other items is displayed. The viewport may sometimes be too small to display the entire list. A scroll bar beside the viewport allows you to move through the whole list.
Slider - A slider is a vertical or horizontal bar that shows the current setting of a function, such as volume or battery power, within a possible range of settings. The setting of sliders can be adjusted by the movement of a slider thumb along the bar.
Check Box - A check box is used to enable and disable an option. A check box is a small box beside a text label that identifies the option. When the check box is selected, an X appears inside the box.
Scroll Bar - Scroll bars are used to navigate through the options in a viewport. These vertical or horizontal bars have an arrow shaped button (scroll button) at each end. Each time a scroll button
is selected, the list in the viewport will move one interval in the direction of the button’s arrow (up, down, right or left). Scroll bars can also work like a slider. A slider thumb on the bar indicates the position of the cursor and can be slid along the bar to reposition the list in the viewport.
Menu Button - Menus often include buttons that link to other windows or menus. Selecting a menu button will usually take you to a window with several options or to a menu with the same name as the button.

Selection Methods
This section of the Quick Start provides a brief introduction to the different ways you can make selections on a DV4/MT4. DynaVox devices are designed to meet the varied physical and cognitive needs of many individuals. Customized selection methods mean that you can choose the access method that best suits your own needs.
In addition to making selections by pressing the touch screen, you can access the DV4/MT4 through scanning, joysticks, audio touch, mouse pause and Morse code. Each of these selection methods can be activated in the Selection Method pull-down menu in the Setup menu. Each selection method can then be customized when the Selection Method Settings button is chosen.
This section offers an overview of each of these methods as well as step-by-step instructions for choosing a selection method. For instructions on customizing the selection method you are using, please refer to the DynaVox Series 4 Searchable Help on the CD that came with your device.
Touch Enter
The touch enter selection method relies on the device’s touch screen. An item on the touch screen is selected when it is physically touched with a finger or pointing device, or when it is selected with a mouse click. This is direct selection. With touch enter direct selection, the selected object is activated as soon as the touch is initiated. This selection method is ideal for individuals who have the fine motor skills and visual/cognitive abilities that are needed to recognize and select vocabulary items or symbols.
Touch enter is the default selection method for DV4/MT4 devices, so it is automatically active in new devices. If your selection method has been changed, use these steps to return to the touch enter method:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
4. Select the Selection Method pull-down menu.
5. Select the Touch Enter option.
6. Select the OK button to close the Setup menu.
Page 21
Quick Start: Introducing DynaVox Series 4
Part # 400023
17
Touch Exit
This direct selection method is similar to touch enter, but the touch exit option means that a selected object is activated when the selection is released. This method allows you to maintain contact with the touch screen without accidentally making a selection. This means that you can slide a finger or a pointer across the screen, or hold down on a mouse button while moving the cursor. A selection will not be made until the finger or pointer lifts off the screen, or the mouse button is released. This makes the touch exit selection method ideal for a person who may find it easier to maintain contact with the touch screen while moving from selection to selection.
You can activate the touch exit selection method by following these steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
4. Select the Selection Method pull-down menu.
5. Select the Touch Exit option.
6. Select the OK button to close the Setup menu.
Scanning
Scanning is intended for individuals who are unable to effectively use direct selection. When scanning is in use, objects on the DynaVox touch screen are highlighted in a specific pattern. A switch or other device is used to make a selection when the desired item is highlighted.
Scanning includes two primary methods: visual scanning and auditory scanning. To use visual scanning, you must be able to identify the moving highlight and visually identify items on the touch screen.
Auditory scanning is an ideal selection method for individuals whose visual abilities do not allow them to visually identify choices on the touch screen. When auditory scanning is being used, the DynaVox device will speak cues for the choices as they are highlighted. The user makes the selection when he or she hears the cue for the desired choice. Auditory scanning can also work well for individuals who can see the touch screen but would benefit from an auditory reinforcement of their vocabulary choices.
Follow these steps to activate the scanning selection method:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
Page 22

3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
4. Select the Selection Method pull-down menu.
5. Select the Scanning option.
6. Select the OK button to close the Setup menu.
Joystick
The Joystick selection method is a form of direct selection that lets you use a joystick to individually highlight each item on the touch screen. When the desired item is highlighted, the joystick or a secondary switch is used to make a selection. This selection method may be a good fit for individuals whose motor skills do not allow them to use the touch enter or touch exit selection methods, but who can effectively use a joystick to direct the movement of the highlight to the desired location. Direct selection through a joystick will allow for quicker spontaneous message composition than the scanning selection method. Since auditory cues can be used with the joystick selection method, this method is also applicable to individuals who may have difficulty seeing items on the touch screen, or to individuals who would benefit from auditory reinforcement of their selections.
Note: The joystick selection method for DynaVox Series 4 devices will work with USB joysticks that
can be purchased at any computer supply store. "Switch type" joysticks that can be connected to the DynaVox devices with the help of a serial-to-USB adapter may also be used. This type of switch joystick is available through DynaVox Technologies.
Follow these steps to activate the joystick selection method:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.

Audio Touch
The audio touch selection method combines the speed of direct selection with the auditory cues that are typically associated with scanning. When audio touch is the active selection method, you can make selections by touching the touch screen. As you drag a finger (or a stylus, pointer or other means of contact) across the screen, the device will speak the options that are being passed.
This selection method is very effective for individuals who have the motor skills to use a touch panel or a computer mouse, but who also have limited vision and need to rely on auditory cues to make selections. Audio touch can also be successfully applied to individuals who have the visual ability to use the touch enter or touch exit selection methods, but who would benefit from an auditory reinforcement of their vocabulary choices.
To activate the audio touch selection method, use the following steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
4. Select the Selection Method pull-down menu.
5. Select the Audio Touch option.
6. Select the OK button to close the Setup menu.
Morse Code
The use of Morse code as a selection method is one way to increase speed and accuracy for individuals who need to use a switch input device to access their DynaVox. The Morse code selection method adds a Morse code tag to every item on the touch screen. One or two switches can be used to enter the Morse code for the desired item. Since the Morse code tags are automatically supplied for any onscreen options, it is not necessary to know Morse code before using this selection method. This unique option allows individuals to make direct switch selections instead of waiting for a scan to highlight each item.
The Morse code used for this selection method is the Morse Code Input System for Windows 2000. This is an enhanced version of standard Morse code and includes Morse code tags for punctuation and standard computer commands. With these expanded features, the Morse code selection method can be used with the computer access features of the DV4 and MT4.
To activate the Morse code selection method, follow these steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
Page 24

2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
4. Select the Selection Method pull-down menu.
5. Select the Morse code option.
6. Select the OK button to close the Setup menu.
Mouse Pause
The mouse pause selection method is an excellent direct select option for an individual who has the physical ability to maneuver a mouse to direct a cursor on the DynaVox touch screen, but who lacks the ability to press down on the mouse button to make selections. When the mouse pause selection method is active, moving a computer mouse or track ball connected to the DynaVox device will control a cursor on the touch screen. An item will be selected when the cursor pauses on it for a specified amount of time.
Follow these steps to activate the mouse pause selection method:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
4. Select the Selection Method pull-down menu.
5. Select the Mouse Pause option.
6. Select the OK button to close the Setup menu.

Basic Step-by-Steps
This section offers step-by-step instructions for some of the most common operations that you will need to know as you begin to communicate with your new device.
Using Your Device to Communicate
The DV4/MT4 device will speak when selections are made on a communication page with symbol buttons. These buttons are the most prominent visible components of DynaVox communication pages. Symbol buttons contain vocabulary in the form of letters, words, phrases or sentences, providing the building blocks of messages. These buttons usually feature a label and a symbol to illustrate the vocabulary that is programmed into the button. Since most buttons are fairly small, the label is usually only a word or two. The label can be the entire vocabulary content of a button or it can be a key word that represents a longer message called text. When a symbol button is selected, different things may happen. The button’s label or text may be automatically spoken by the device, or this vocabulary may be sent to the Message Window to be spoken when the Message Window is selected. The actions that take place when a button is selected are determined by behaviors.
Behaviors are actions that can be programmed into buttons. Each button must have at least one behavior. Buttons can have more than one behavior. Without an assigned behavior, a button will have no function. More than 175 unique behaviors are available in the DynaVox Series 4 Behavior Editor. (The most common behaviors are defined in this book in Appendix A: Common Behaviors.) To see what behavior is assigned to a button, follow these steps:
1. Select the square, green Modify button in the title bar above the communication page. The Modify button will turn red, indicating that it has been selected.
2. Select a symbol button. The Modify Button menu will open.
3. Look at the blue Behaviors button. Any behaviors that are assigned to this button will be listed beside the Behaviors button.
If you have selected a symbol button, one of the assigned behaviors is probably Insert Label, Insert Text, Speak Label or Speak Text. These are the four primary behaviors for communicating vocabulary from symbol buttons. Each of these behaviors will cause a symbol button to communicate information in a different way.
Insert Label - If an Insert Label behavior is assigned to a button, the button’s label will be sent to the Message Window when the button is selected. The label will not be spoken until the Message Window is selected. This behavior allows you to string together labels from multiple buttons to create a unique message in the Message Window. When the Message Window is selected, the message will be spoken by the device.
Page 26
DynaVox Technologies
22
Insert Text - If an Insert Text behavior is assigned to a button, the button’s text message will be
sent to the Message Window when the button is selected. The text will not be spoken until the Message Window is selected. This behavior allows you to use text from more than one button to create a unique message in the Message Window. When the Message Window is selected, the whole message will be spoken by the device.
Remember that the button’s text may not be the same as its label. Text is not a visible part of a button when you are looking at an active communication page. The label is often representative of longer text. For example, a button may have Hobbies as a label. The actual text of the button could be “Swimming and watching movies are my hobbies.” This text is added to the Message Window when the Insert Text behavior is assigned to the button.
Speak Label - When you select a symbol button that has a Speak Label behavior assigned to it, the button’s label will be spoken by the device. The label will not be sent to the Message Window.
Speak Text - The Speak Text behavior will cause the device to automatically speak a button’s text message when the button is selected. This text, which is added when the Speak Text behavior is programmed into the button, will not be sent to the Message Window. This behavior enables you to automatically speak lengthy messages without taking time to compose them in the Message Window.
Be sure to keep these four behaviors in mind when you begin to use your device. When you select a symbol button, note whether the device automatically speaks the button content. If the content is sent to the Message Window but is not spoken immediately, simply select the Message Window to prompt the device to speak.

The DynaVox Language Applications Page Sets
The DynaVox Language Applications are a series of different pre-programmed communication page sets, each one designed to meet the cognitive, developmental and conversational needs of a specific group of individuals. The page sets have been created to provide useful, appropriate vocabulary and a reliable page navigation system to support the use of the Series 4 devices for day-to-day communication.
Pre-programmed page sets should be used as a starting point for device customization. A page set provides you with a platform from which you can begin to communicate. To be really effective, names, vocabulary words and phrases that you use often should be added to the pages. The DynaVox Language Application page sets feature many blank buttons to make it easy to add original information.
The rest of this section features brief descriptions of the DynaVox Language Applications page sets. While you are reading the page set overviews, be sure to use your device to explore the individual pages. Once you have chosen the page set that best suits your communication needs, continue your Quick Start reading by exploring the quick customization methods that are explained in Section 5: Customizing Pages.

of activity- and category-based vocabulary for conversation in the home and in the community. These tab panes link to popups with supplementary vocabulary. Many blank buttons are available for quick and easy customization.
Note: The vocabulary featured in the 40 Button Conversation page set is based in part on the work
of David R. Beukelman, Ph.D.
Complementary Pages
The Complementary page set is not intended to be used as a comprehensive communication page set. This pages set includes sample pages to provide ideas for page creation. This page set contains sample holiday pages, sample writing pages, sample motivational pages, a Headmouse Rest popup and a Like This page. Use the Page Navigator menu to jump to these additional pages.
DynaBooks
The DynaBooks page set is not intended to be used as a comprehensive communication page set. These pages offer literacy activities at varying levels of complexity. Link these pages to an individual’s communication page set to encourage participation in reading activities and the development of literacy skills.
Exploratory Pages
The Exploratory page set provide an informal opportunity to explore the features of the DynaVox Series 4 devices. The Access, Leisure and Language activities allow you to experiment with page layout styles and try different access methods. This type of experimentation is a good way to learn about the features that are most efficient for your needs. The Exploratory page set is also a useful tool for gaining insight into an individual’s linguistic abilities.
Page 40

The various activities are presented on a master page with six tab panes. Each pane offers buttons that link to the activity pages.
Note: These pages are not intended for communication or to be a formal evaluation tool. They are
meant to be used as an informal observation of physical access abilities and communication skills.
Medical Pages
The Medical pages are not a comprehensive page set. These pages offer vocabulary for discussing medical needs and communicating during a hospital stay. The vocabulary, which reflects a wide range of complexity, is organized as full sentences and phrases. It is presented on pages, popups or tab panes that link to additional popups. The Medical pages also feature a QWERTY keyboard with word prediction for novel message generation. The pages in the Medical page set offer various page layouts; one layout can be linked to your main communication page set.
Skeleton Page Set
This page set helps you create your own pages. The skeleton pages are a series of blank pages and popups that can be modified. Each skeleton page set is a complete group of pages and popups that are linked together to provide a consistent navigational strategy. Skeleton pages are like templates, providing a platform custom vocabulary. The pages have already been created, linked and often assigned behaviors. You can assign any vocabulary to the buttons. Unlike templates, which must be copied and saved as pages before being customized, the DynaVox skeleton pages will be permanently changed when customized vocabulary is added.

Gateway Series 4
Gateway Series 4© is a developmentally-based series of page sets designed for DynaVox by Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. The Gateway page sets accommodate the fundamental communication needs of young users as well as the complex communication needs of competent adult communicators. Consistency in the design of all the page sets ensures that you can seamlessly move from a basic page set to the next level of complexity while maintaining your communicative competence. Each Gateway page set includes a "core" single-word vocabulary that enables you to converse about a range of topics. Gateway page sets also feature activity-based pages to promote efficient communication within focused activities.
Gateway 12
Gateway 12 is designed for children, chronologically between two and six years of age, whose receptive language performance is at the 18-24 month level. Gateway 12 is best suited for individuals who are able to successfully access a 12-location button array and who are developmentally ready to begin combining words to create multi-word messages. Gateway 12 includes a variety of topical page sets. Each one focuses on a different activity or environment. Each set provides a core single word vocabulary that is intended for use in a focused activity mediated by an adult communication partner.
Gateway 20
Gateway 20 targets two distinct user populations. The first is children, chronologically between two and 15 years of age, whose receptive skills are at the 24-30 month level. These children may have severe physical impairments, mild to moderate cognitive limitations, and/or an oral apraxia. The second clinical population includes children whose diagnosis falls within the PDD - Autistic Spectrum. These children are chronologically between three and 10 years of age and typically use PECS with an "I want" sentence strip. They can recognize symbols for nouns, verbs and some adjectives and adverbs. Both populations would be communicating in messages of one or two words.
Gateway 20 includes a variety of features for enhancing language development and expanding the size of the core vocabulary. Sentence Development Links provide a simplified method for creating a sentence. Selecting a verb automatically opens a popup of associated "Things" that the child can use to complete a message. "Describing" and "Colors/Shapes" links are available on each of the associated "Thing" popups, providing additional opportunities for a child to expand the complexity of his or her sentences. The

present progressive verb form (-ing) is modeled on the verb page to promote spontaneous usage in later page sets. Semantic Power Strips provide a set of grammatically associated words (walk, run, jog and skip, for example) that offer communicators opportunities for a greater diversity of expression. An Opposite button on the Descriptive Words popup systematically expands the available vocabulary. A set of five tab controls (About Me, Time to Chat, Time to Learn, Time to Play, Time to Relax) can help to increase a child’s opportunities for participating in dialogues and educational or recreational activities.
Gateway 30
Gateway 30 is designed for adolescents and adults with limitations in cognitive-language performance. Candidates for Gateway 30 communicate in single- or multiple-word utterances, and typically do not use function words (e.g. the, this, with) or word endings such as “-ing” or “ed” as a part of their spontaneous message generation. The vocabulary within this page set is functionally based and reflects many of the activities of daily living.
The Gateway 30 main page has simple object categories like Foods, Household and Clothing, and a set of five tab controls is included. The About Me tab control can be customized to include general information about the individual who is using Gateway 30. The Talk to Friends tab control offers expressions that can be used in social conversation. The Talk About Holidays tab control enables you to talk about birthdays and the events that occur during the year. The Talking in Town tab control provides general messages for communicating within the community and the Time to Relax tab control offers a set of functions that you can operate to help control your environment.
Gateway 40
Gateway 40 addresses the needs of children, chronologically aged three to 12 years, whose receptive skills are at the 30-60 month level. The expressive performance of these individuals would range from two- or three-word telegraphic sentences to syntactically correct sentences. This page set is ideal for individuals who have the potential to learn to use word endings, articles and prepositions. Spelling and reading should be among the goals of Gateway 40 users. Semantic Power Strips provide a set of grammatically associated words (like walk, run, jog and skip) that offer opportunities for a greater diversity of expression. All forms of the verb "to be" and frequently used object categories like Household and Toys are easily

accessible from the main page. An Opposite button on the Descriptive Words popup systematically expands the available vocabulary. Five tab controls (About Me, Time to Chat, Time to Learn, Time to Play, Time to Relax) can help to increase a child’s opportunities for participating in dialogues and educational or recreational activities.
Gateway 60
The Gateway 60 page set is a good option for children and adults whose receptive language skills are at at least the four year level. These individuals should be be able to construct five- to six-word sentences that include articles, prepositions and pronouns. Users should be using or learning to use the full range of word morphology features. Ideal users would also benefit from access to the spelling and word prediction features.
Semantic Power Strips (sets of grammatically associated words) are available for verbs and nouns. Power strips make a greater diversity of expression easily available. The main page offers frequently used object categories like Foods, Household and Hygiene. The Gateway 60 page set offers vocabulary categories such as Time Words, States, Capitals, Planets and World Places. An Opposite button on the Descriptive Words page systematically expands the available vocabulary. Five tab controls (About Me, Time to Chat, Time to Learn, Time to Play, Time to Relax) can help to increase a child’s opportunities for participating in dialogues and educational or recreational activities.
Gateway Pro
Gateway Pro is designed for literate users who can use direct selection or scanning with at least 100 buttons on a page. A typical Gateway Pro user demonstrates fully developed syntactical performance with word endings, articles and prepositions. Spelling is also an important part of routine message generation.
The main page of Gateway Pro contains a QWERTY keyboard and consistent access to the most frequently used English words. The main page also includes a comprehensive selection of “Thing” words and access to popups for People, Questions, Pronouns, Verbs, Descriptive Words, Time Words and Places.
Gateway Pro also provides access to comprehensive computer access and environmental control pages.

Section 5: Customizing Pages
To be an effective communication tool, your DV4/MT4 device should always include your own unique vocabulary. In addition to the thousands of vocabulary items in the Series 4 page sets, you must be able to quickly access names, phone numbers and other personal information. The inclusion of the names of family and friends, and the addition of vocabulary that relates to a favorite hobby, a job or school also makes it easier for someone to talk about the things that matter most.
DynaVox Series 4 software offers several unique, easy-to-use tools for customizing your communication pages (including pages within the DynaVox Language Applications page sets):
The User Setup Wizard
The Modify button
The Modify Pages menu
These tools make it easy to change and customize the DynaVox Language Applications page sets that you received as part of your device’s software. These sets of communication pages are intended to be customized with unique, personal vocabulary. The tools that are discussed in this section provide the simplest way to make the most of these page sets.
The User Setup Wizard
The simplest way to add customized information to the DynaVox Language Applications page sets is to use the User Setup Wizard. This feature is designed to work with the active labels in the pre-programmed pages. Active labels are a unique version of the standard labels that can be used to place text on buttons. Instead of being manually assigned with a system keyboard, the text in an active label is automatically filled in and maintained by the Series 4 software. Active labels are often used for buttons that display the time and date. When active labels are used in conjunction with the User Setup Wizard, you enter your personal information into the User Setup Wizard one time. Then the information is automatically added to any buttons with active labels relating to personal information. For example, if you enter your name and address into the User Setup Wizard and then open a page with active labels set to "name" and "address," those labels will automatically be filled with correct name and address.
Begin to explore this feature by opening the User Setup Wizard:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
Page 45

4. Select the User Setup Wizard button in the Setup menu. The main window of the User
Setup Wizard will open.
The User Setup Wizard presents a series of windows that ask for specific information. The first window asks for your name, nickname and email address. When a text box in one of these windows is selected, a system keyboard popup will open to provide a way to add information to the text box. After entering text, select the OK button to close the system keyboard.
Navigation buttons are presented at the bottom of each User Setup Wizard window:
Clear All - This button is presented only on the first page of the User Setup Wizard. Select it to delete all of the current User Setup Wizard information. When you select the Clear All button, a confirmation window is presented and you must confirm that you want to clear your settings.
Next - Select the Next button to move to the next window in the User Setup Wizard.
Prev - Select the Prev button to go back to the previous window in the User Setup Wizard.
Finish - Select the Finish button when you have completed the User Setup Wizard. When you select this button, a User Setup Wizard Confirmation Page window is presented. Use this window to review your information. Select the Edit button to make changes and choose the Save button to save the information.
Cancel - Select the Cancel button to close the User Setup Wizard without saving anything new.
As you continue to work through the User Setup Wizard, you will be able to add the following information to the DynaVox Series 4 software:
Your name (first, middle and last) The name of the facility where you live Your nickname or receive therapy Your email address Your parents’ names Your age Your spouse’s name Your birthday The names of your sisters or brothers Your hobbies The names of your children Your address (primary and secondary) The names of your pets Your phone number (primary and secondary) The name of your school or employer
After you add your personal information (or information specific to the individual who will be using the DV4/MT4 device) to the User Setup Wizard, you will be presented with a review of the available selection methods. Use the scroll buttons on the right side of the viewport to scroll through the selection method

descriptions. Think about the selection method you will be using. The next window will ask you to choose the page set you would like to use. To select a page set, choose from the options featured in the Page Set pull-down menu. Select the Page Set pull-down menu to see all the menu’s options. When you select one option, the menu will close and display only the option you selected. Try selecting the Show Me button to see a sample page from the page set you have selected.
Once you have added your information to the User Setup Wizard, select the Finish button. You will be presented with a confirmation page that lists all of your setup data. You may opt to select the Edit button and make changes. Selecting the Save button will preserve your data, close the User Setup Wizard and open the page set you just selected. Once these steps are completed, the DynaVox Series 4 software will use the personal information stored in the User Setup Wizard to automatically customize any page with active labels for user information.

Section 6: Creating Pages
DynaVox Series 4 software provides the DynaVox Language Applications as a starting point for building your own unique communication pages. In addition to adding unique vocabulary to these pages, you may also want to customize your chosen page set with some original pages. Your DV4/MT4 device offers several ways to create your own personalized communication pages:
Quick Page
Skeleton Pages
Page Wizard
Page Editor (Advanced Page Editing)
These tools provide the most efficient way to create well-organized communication pages. When used to add original pages to the existing DynaVox Language Applications pages, these tools simplify page creation by providing a professionally-developed framework for your custom pages.
DynaVox Series 4 software also provides advanced editing tools for individuals who do not want to work with the existing framework of pages. Advanced editing tools are discussed briefly at the end of this section, and more detailed information is available in the DynaVox Series 4 Searchable Help on the CD that came with your DV4/MT4 device.
Quick Page
The Quick Page feature provides an efficient way to add vocabulary and symbols to copies of template pages. Quick Page also promotes consistency in page layout and navigation strategies, making it easy to move from one page to another while you are using your DV4/MT4 to communicate. The templates used in the Quick Page feature are based on the layouts of the DynaVox Language Applications page sets and skeleton page sets that are available on your device. This allows you to build customized pages from templates that match the page set you are using.
Note: Using Quick Page will not permanently change the chosen template. Quick Page creates a new
page by using a copy of the template.
Templates for Quick Page can be selected in the Interface Features menu. If at least one template is not specified before the Quick Page feature is opened, you will be asked to choose a template at that time. Once a template is chosen, the Quick Page feature guides you through the process of adding vocabulary to buttons on a copy of the template page. If symbols are associated with the vocabulary you choose, they will be automatically added to the buttons. Template buttons may be pre-programmed with behaviors that will make sure the buttons perform specific actions when they are selected.

The Skeleton Pages
The skeleton pages are blank pages and popups that can be modified to create unique page sets. Each skeleton page set is a group of pages and popups that are already linked together, providing a consistent navigational strategy. Skeleton pages are like templates in that they provide a platform for pages of uniquely customized vocabulary. The pages and buttons have already been created, organized and assigned a navigational strategy. The only remaining task is assigning vocabulary and behaviors to the buttons. Unlike templates, which must be copied and saved as pages before being customized, the original skeleton pages will be permanently changed when they are customized.
Opening a Skeleton Page Set
To open a skeleton page set, follow these steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
3. Select Page Navigator in the second pull-down menu. The Page Navigator menu will open.
4. Select the down arrow button for the left viewport to scroll down to the Skeleton Page Sets
folder.
5. Select the expansion box beside the Skeleton Page Sets folder to see all the skeleton page
sets.
6. Select the folder for the skeleton page set you want to use. The right viewport will display
the names of all the pages in the chosen set.

Page Wizard
The Page Wizard is another feature that can be used to simplify the creation of a new communication page, popup or template. The windows of the Page Wizard walk you step-by-step through choosing the characteristics of a new page. Tools in the Page Wizard can be used to choose an overall page layout and page elements like the Message Window, buttons and tab controls. The visual characteristics and function of each element can also be defined. When the customized page is complete, it can be saved as a communication page or popup, or as a template that can be used for the creation of more pages.
To launch the Page Wizard, use the following steps:
Note: It is important to note that the new page or template you create using the Page Wizard will
be saved in the same directory as the page that is open when you launch the Page Wizard. Consider this before opening the Page Wizard to ensure that the page or template you create is saved in a directory that you will remember.
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Page Editing in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Page Wizard in the second pull-down menu.
The Page Wizard windows are divided into two boxes. The tools in the box on the left can be used to select page elements. The Preview box on the right displays a dynamic preview of the page.
Page 66
DynaVox Technologies
62
The navigation buttons at the bottom of each Page Wizard window can be used to step forward or backward through the page creation process. These buttons include:
Next - Select this button to move to the next window in the Page Wizard. The Next button will be unavailable if an element on the current window needs to be further defined.
Prev - Select this button to return to the previous window in the Page Wizard.
Exit the Page Wizard - Select this button to stop designing a page. You have the option to save
the progress you have made, or to close the Page Wizard without saving your work.
Create the Page - Select this button to create the page as it currently exists, without continuing to add information.
The Page Wizard provides tools for creating pages and popups that are as simple or complex as your individual communication needs. Before you begin to create a new page with the Page Wizard, you will be asked to choose a level of complexity for your page layout. The Select complexity level: pull-down menu in the first window of the Page Wizard offers a choice between two levels of complexity:
Beginner - The beginner level allows you to use one page layout on a communication page. The page can contain any number of buttons but only one primary page layout.
Expert - The expert level provides options that are not available in the beginner level, including additional windows with advanced options for defining the elements of a page layout. Use the expert-level Page Wizard tools to:
Define every aspect of each individual button on the page layout. The Behavior Editor
menu can be used to program a button to perform multiple actions.
Change the margins of the active area in a page, popup or set of tab controls.
Define the characteristics of every tab in a set of tab controls.
Add a new page layout to any section of a page that contains a button grid. Multiple
organizational layers can be used on a page or popup.
The second window of the Page Wizard asks you to select a layout for your new page. A page layout defines the elements that are available on a page, as well as their relative sizes and positions. A page layout can include buttons (in columns, rows or grids), a Message Window, a Search Box or tab controls. The Page Wizard provides several standard page layouts that can be used as a starting point for new pages and popups. The Page Layout box displays the layout options in the Select a layout: viewport. The selected layout will be outlined in blue in this viewport and displayed in the Preview box.
Note: In the sample layouts, small blocks with buttons and dotted lines indicate areas of the page
where button grids can be placed. The sample button layout does not reflect the way the page will look. Any number of buttons can be used in the designated area.
Page 67
Quick Start: Introducing DynaVox Series 4
Part # 400023
63
Once you select a page layout, you use the next windows to select the following characteristics of the page or popup you are creating:
Audio cues for buttons
Background colors for boxes, pages and buttons
Border colors for boxes, pages and buttons
Border thickness for buttons
Button behaviors and symbols
Button type
Button visual style
Horizontal proportions and space for row items
Labels, colors, fonts, text and justification
Message Window behaviors
Number of columns/rows
Number of tab panes
Search parameters for Search boxes
Vertical proportions and space for column items
Once you have selected a page layout, the Page Wizard will continue to present the appropriate tools to define the elements on your selected page. Since the options that are presented depend on your chosen level of complexity and the page layout that you selected, there is no definitive step-by-step sequence of instructions to take you through the remainder of the Page Wizard windows. Simply work through the options that are presented in each new window.
When you have defined all the elements in your selected page layout, you will be taken to the Page Wizard complete window. This window provides tools for saving the new layout as a communication page or popup, or as a template for future page creation. Once your layout has been saved, you can open the page, popup or template with the Page Navigator menu.
Using the Page Editing Preferences Wizard
You can make the creation of a page with Page Wizard an even quicker process by first using the Page Editing Preferences Wizard to record some default page creation settings. Any options that you select in the Page Editing Preferences Wizard will be automatically applied to all new pages (the Page Wizard does provide options if you want a page to differ from the default). The Page Editing Preferences Wizard can be found in the main pull-down menu, under the Page Editing option.
To launch the Page Editing Preferences Wizard, use the following steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Page Editing in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Preference Wizard in the second pull-down menu.
Page 68
DynaVox Technologies
64
The Page Editing Preferences Wizard offers navigation buttons like those in the User Setup Wizard:
Next - Select the Next button to move to the next window in the Page Editing Preferences Wizard.
Prev - Select the Prev button to go back to the previous window in the Page Editing Preferences Wizard.
Finish - The Finish button should be selected when you have completed all the pages in the Page Editing Preferences Wizard. When this button is selected, a Confirmation Page window will be presented. Use this window to review your information. Select the Edit button to make changes and choose the Save button to save the information.
Cancel - Selecting the Cancel button will close the Page Editing Preferences Wizard without saving anything new.
You can use the Page Editing Preferences Wizard to create default settings for the following aspects of your communication pages:
Page preferences (color)
Plain button preferences (button color, border color, font, symbol, behavior)
Symbol button preferences (button color, border color, font, symbol, behavior)
Go To button preferences (button color, border color, font, symbol, behavior)
When you have completed your default settings, select the Finish button. You will be presented with a confirmation page that lists all of your choices. If you want to make any changes, select the Edit button and then select the item that you want to change. Selecting the Save button will preserve your data and close the Page Editing Preferences Wizard.
The default settings you selected in the Page Editing Preferences Wizard will now be automatically applied whenever you begin to create a new communication page in the Page Wizard. Remember, though, that you do not have to use these settings for every new page that you create. You can use the Page Wizard to make unique selections for any new page.

Page Editor
The DynaVox Series 4 software provides advanced editing tools in addition to customization tools like the User Setup Wizard, the Modify button, Quick Page and the skeleton pages. These advanced editing features, available in the Page Editor, provide a page creation option when you want to create original pages without relying on the use of pre-programmed pages and templates.
When the Page Editor is open, your DV4/MT4 device is in Page Edit mode. Page Edit mode can be used only for creating and changing communication pages. Your device’s communication abilities will be temporarily suspended and the contents of the Message Window will be hidden. If any text was displayed in the Message Window when the Page Editor was opened, it will be restored when the Page Editor is closed.
You can open the Page Editor by completing the following steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Page Editing in the main pull-down menu.
3. Select Page Editor in the second pull-down menu.
Once you have completed these three steps, your device is in Page Edit mode. When you want to close the Page Editor, you can follow these steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button.
2. Select Exit Page Editor in the pull-down menu.
Note: For step-by-step information on using the Page Editor, please refer to the DynaVox Series 4
Searchable Help on the CD that came with your device.

Section 7: Rate Enhancement
and Environmental Control
Rate Enhancement
DynaVox Series 4 devices offer rate enhancement features that can help you communicate more quickly and efficiently. These features include word prediction, context prediction, flexible abbreviation, abbreviation expansion and macros. Rate enhancement reduces the number of selections you must make to perform a task. When you make less selections, your communication rate will be faster.
Prediction
Prediction can be used with keyboard pages and popups that include predictor buttons. As you use the keyboard buttons to compose a message, the prediction feature anticipates your word choices and displays various options for quick selection. These word choices are displayed in predictor buttons. If the software predicts the word you are trying to compose, you can save time by selecting the predictor button that features the correct word. This will immediately send the word to the Message Window, allowing you to simply move on to the next word.

Part # 400023
67
Prediction draws its selections from the Series 4 dictionary. You can make your own personal vocabulary (including names, single words, multiple word phrases and full sentences) available for word prediction by adding these items to the dictionary. To make the most of word prediction, create dictionary entries for the names of family, friends, businesses, towns, hobbies, foods, movies or anything you talk about often. When you create these dictionary entries, be sure to give them fairly high frequencies. Frequency is an assigned number (1-100) that reflects the number of times a word is used in your normal conversation. Words with low frequencies are seldom used. Words with high frequencies tend to be used often and are predicted more quickly. You may want to try giving a dictionary entry that you will use every day a frequency between 75 and 100.
Experiment with prediction by following the example below. Word prediction is activated as a default setting when you receive your device, so begin by opening a keyboard page with predictor buttons:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
3. Select Page Navigator in the second pull-down menu. The Page Navigator menu will open.
4. Select the Keyboard Pages folder in the left viewport.
5. Select the 50 qwerty keyboard page in the right viewport.
6. Select the Go to Page button to close the Page Navigator menu and open the selected
keyboard page.
Once the keyboard page is open, you may try to use word prediction. Note the five predictor buttons just below the Message Window. In this exercise, use word prediction to complete the sentence “I like ice cream.”
1. Because it is used so frequently, the word I is usually predicted before you begin typing.
Select the I predictor button to add I to the Message Window. A space will be automatically added behind the word.
2. Select the L button. Like will appear in one of the predictor buttons.
3. Select the Like predictor button to add like to the Message Window. A space will be
automatically added behind the word.
4. Select the I button.
5. Select the C button. Ice- cream will be displayed in a predictor button. (If ice- cream is not
displayed in one of the predictor buttons, try selecting the E button.)
6. Select the ice-cream predictor button to add the word to the Message Window. A space will
be automatically added behind the word.
Page 72
DynaVox Technologies
68
7. Select the Message Window to speak your new message.
If you composed this sentence without word prediction features, you would need to make 16 button selections. With word prediction, the sentence was composed with only six selections.
Context Prediction
The word prediction feature can be enhanced with context prediction. When this feature is active, the software anticipates word selections based on the grammatical structure of the sentence you are typing. For context prediction to function efficiently, all dictionary entries must be assigned the correct part of speech. When you receive your device, context prediction is activated as a default setting.
Flexible Abbreviation
Flexible abbreviation is a rate enhancement feature that is especially helpful for names and long phrases. If dictionary entries are created for words, names, sentences and phrases that you use often, then those items can be automatically predicted by this feature. When you use keyboard buttons to select letters, the flexible abbreviation expansion feature will search the dictionary and present items that include the given letters in the same sequence. You then can choose the predicted items instead of typing out the rest of the word or phrase. Flexible abbreviation expansion is especially simple to use as no specifically defined abbreviations are required. You may type abbreviations without needing to memorize one specific abbreviation. Flexible abbreviation expansion can accelerate your communication if you include frequently used greetings, farewells and questions in your device’s dictionary.
Try the example below (using the 50 qwerty keyboard page) to see how the flexible abbreviation feature works. In this example, you will use flexible abbreviation to predict the question “What TV show do you want to watch?” This question is already programmed into the DynaVox dictionary.
Page 73
Quick Start: Introducing DynaVox Series 4
Part # 400023
69
1. Select the W button.
2. Select the T button.
3. Select the V button. “What
TV show do you want to watch?” will be presented in one of the predictor buttons.
5. Select the What TV show
do you want to watch?
button. The question will be sent to the Message Window.
Flexible abbreviation predicted this question from the letters you entered because the letters are found in the same sequence in the sentence: W
hat TV show do you want to
watch. With flexible abbreviation, it took only four selections to send this question to the Message Window. It would take 36 selections to completely type out this sentence on the system keyboard popup.
Abbreviation Expansion
Another way to accelerate message composition on a keyboard page is to use the DynaVox Series 4 abbreviation expansions feature. This feature allows you to define specific abbreviations for longer words and phrases, thereby reducing the number of letters you must enter to compose a message. Once you have defined a specific abbreviation in the software, the device will automatically supply the full word or phrase whenever the abbreviation is entered on a keyboard page or popup. For example, you may define “INY” as an abbreviation for “It’s nice to see you.” If the abbreviation expansions feature is active, “It’s nice to see you” will appear onscreen wherever you enter “INY” and then add a space.
Abbreviation expansions allow things you say often (greetings, introductions and questions, for example) to be sent to the Message Window with just a few selections. Since the abbreviation expansion feature is an active default setting when you receive your device, all you need to do to try out this feature is create a test abbreviation. Follow the step-by-steps below to create an abbreviation for “It’s nice to see you.”
1. Select the pull-down menu button.
2. Select Setup in the main pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
3. Select Tools Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Tools menu will open.
4. Select the Abbreviation Browser button. The Abbreviation Browser menu will open.
Page 74

70
5. Select the New button. An Enter Abbreviation system keyboard popup will open.
6. Use the keyboard buttons to enter INY and then select the OK button to close the keyboard
popup. An Enter Expansion system keyboard popup will open.
7. Use the keyboard buttons to enter It’s nice to see you and then select the OK button to close
the keyboard popup.
8. Select the Save to Card button.
9. Select the Yes button to confirm that you want to save the new abbreviation expansion to
your device’s main data storage card. This process, which will prevent your abbreviation expansions from being lost in the event of a device failure, may take a moment. An hourglass icon will be presented while the information is being saved to the data storage card.
10. Select the OK button to close the Abbreviation Browser menu.
11. Select the OK button to close the Tools menu.
The initials INY are now recorded as an abbreviation for “It’s nice to see you.” To see how this new abbreviation will work, use the steps from the word prediction exercise to open the a keyboard page again. Then follow these steps to test the abbreviation expansion:
1. Use the alphabet buttons on the keyboard page to enter INY.
2. Select the Space button. The phrase “It’s nice to see you” will automatically replace the
abbreviation in the Message Window.
3. Select the Message Window to speak the sentence.
Macros
You can also increase your speed on the DV4/MT4 device by using macros. The macro feature of DynaVox Series 4 software lets you create customized operations that include all the behaviors for completing a task that would typically require numerous selections. Once a macro has been created, it can be added to a button as part of an Activate Macro behavior. Macros promote efficiency since the Activate a Macro behavior enables you to launch all the steps in a macro with only one button selection.
Macros can be combined with other features of your DV4/MT4 device, like the DynaVox Series 4 environmental control capabilities. Create macros for activities you do often, like turning on the TV for favorite programs. A single macro could turn on the living room light, turn on the television, change the channel and speak the message "My favorite show is on."
Note: For step-by-step information on working with macros, please refer to your DynaVox Series 4
Searchable Help on the CD that came with your DV4/MT4.

Environmental Control
Infrared remote control and computer access capabilities are built into DV4 and MT4 devices to provide added convenience. With DynaVox Series 4, you can use your DV4/MT4 access method to control an X-10 infrared system, use remote control commands for commercial appliances like televisions and compact disc players, or work with personal computers.
Environmental control commands and computer access commands are behaviors that can be assigned to buttons. Several of the DynaVox Language Applications page sets include pages with buttons for environmental control and computer access behaviors. You need only to add the specific codes for the appliance or computer that you want to use.
X-10 Environmental Control
X-10 environmental control method enables you to use a remote control to operate appliances that do not have infrared remote control capabilities. The X-10 signaling language allows control signals to be sent over existing electrical lines. You can use X-10 to:
Control any appliance (like lamps and air conditioners) that plug into an electrical outlet
Maintain privacy by opening and closing curtains or blinds
Lock and unlock doors for safety
To use X-10 environmental control with your DV4/MT4, you will need an individual X-10 Appliance Module for each appliance. The X-10 Appliance Module must be specifically designed for the type of appliance that you intend to control.
You must also buy an X-10 Command Center for each of the rooms in which you plan to use X-10. Each X-10 Command Center includes specific codes that control the various X-10 Modules. You will not need to program any X-10 signals into your DV4/MT4 as the ability to communicate with these codes is already programmed into your device.
Infrared Remote Control
Infrared (IR) is an invisible, low frequency light that is used for wireless access to many home appliances like televisions, VCRs and stereos. The DynaVox Series 4 devices have the ability to learn IR codes to send signals to any appliance that can be used with an infrared remote control. To make use of DynaVox IR capabilities, you must teach your device the IR commands you want to use. The steps for teaching your DV4/MT4 an IR command are simple:
Note: Before beginning these steps you will need to get the remote control for the appliance you
want to control with your DynaVox device.

Computer Access
Many individuals who use DynaVox devices have educational, professional and personal reasons to use computers. With DynaVox Series 4 computer access features, you can use your DV4/MT4 to:
Use commercial software programs Surf the Internet
Compose and send e-mails Generate text documents
Send instant messages Send information to a printer
There are several different ways you can use your DV4/MT4 device to access your computer. You can connect an AccessIT device to your computer and use it to receive infrared signals from your DV4/MT4. You can also use a serial cable connection between your DV4/MT4 and the computer, in combination with computer access software like SerialKeys or AACKeys.
Whether you are using an infrared device or a serial cable connection, your DV4/MT4 device must have a way to know that it should send your selections to the computer instead of (or in addition to) the Message Window. You can accomplish this by using buttons with Computer Access behaviors or by using your device’s Alternate Output mode.
Setting Up Computer Access
Prepare your DV4/MT4 device for computer access by following these steps:
1. To use infrared computer access, plug the AccessIT cable into a USB port on your Windows or
Macintosh computer. (Windows computers may display a series of Found New Hardware windows as the AccessIT is recognized.)
To use computer access software (SerialKeys or AACKeys), establish a cable connection by plugging the round end of the serial cable into the serial port on your DV4/MT4 device. Plug the wide end of the cable into the computer.
2. On your DV4/MT4, select the pull-down menu in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
3. Select Setup in the pull-down menu.
4. Select Setup Menu in the second pull-down menu. The Setup menu will open.
5. Select the Input/Output Settings button. The Input/Output Settings menu will open.
6. Select the Computer Access pull-down menu and choose one of the available options:
To use an AccessIT infrared device, select the AccessIT option. To use SerialKeys or AACKeys software, select the SerialKeys option.
7. Select the OK button to exit the Input/Output Settings menu.
Page 80

8. Select the OK button to exit the Setup menu.
Note: If you are using SerialKeys or AACKeys software with your computer, some additional computer
setup will be required. Follow the instructions for your software. Additional tips are included in the DynaVox Series 4 Searchable Help on the CD that came with your DV4/MT4.
Computer Access Behaviors
The behaviors in the Computer Access category enable your DV4/MT4 to convert button selections into keyboard and mouse inputs for the computer. You can use the Modify button (as described in Section 5: Customizing Pages in this Quick Start) to add these behaviors to buttons on any communication page. Many of the DynaVox Series 4 Language Applications page sets provide computer access pages with buttons that already include the behaviors for sending keystrokes, mouse moves and basic computer commands. If you have already followed the steps for setting up computer access, these pages can be used for computer access as soon as they are opened.

Alternate Output
DynaVox Series 4 devices also offer Alternate Output, a computer access method that enables you to send information to a computer from any communication page without using computer access behaviors. Alternate output is an excellent way to compose e-mails or other text documents because it allows you to employ the rate enhancement features on the DV4/MT4 device. Since special computer access pages are not required, you can use symbol buttons that feature whole words, phrases or sentences to compose messages instead of typing letter by letter. When buttons are selected, the output of information to a computer will depend on the behaviors that are programmed into each button. If a button has a Speak Text or Speak Label behavior, vocabulary will be automatically sent to the computer when the button is selected. If a button has an Insert Text or Insert Label behavior, vocabulary will be sent to the Message Window when the button is selected. The vocabulary will be sent to the computer as soon as the Message Window is selected.
Computer access behaviors are not necessary for Alternate Output, but they can be used to enhance it. Unless buttons with computer access behaviors exist on the communication pages you are using, Alternate Access mode will not have the ability to transmit mouse moves or computer commands. In this case, a blank e-mail or other word processing file must be open on the computer and ready to receive information before Alternate Output can be used. For optimum computer access through Alternate Access, you should try using a computer command page in addition to your communication pages.
Since Alternate Output mode automatically applies computer access behaviors to standard communication pages with buttons that do not feature computer commands, this feature must be activated and deactivated. This can be done when the Alternate Output command is added as a behavior to a button. When the Alternate Output button is selected, the Alternate Output Options menu will open and allow you to enable or disable the feature.
To set up Alternate Output by adding it to a button, follow these steps:
1. Select the green Modify button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen. The button will
turn red.
2. Select the button you want to use to access Alternate Output. The Modify Button menu will
open.
3. Select the Label text box and use the system keyboard to add Alternate Output as the
button’s new label.
4. Select the Symbol button and use the Select a Symbol menu to choose an appropriate symbol,
such as computer.
5. Select the Behaviors button in the Modify Button menu. The Behavior Editor menu will open.
6. Select the Behaviors pull-down menu. The pull-down menu will expand.

When your Alternate Output button is complete, you are ready to try this method of computer access by following these steps:
1. Select the Alternate Output button. The Alternate Output Options menu will open.
2. Select the Enable Alternate Output check box.
3. If you want your device to speak words as it is sending them to the computer, select the Use Speech Engine check box.
4. Select the Alternate Output Destination pull-down menu and then select one of the available options:
COM 1
Select this option if you have connected your DV4/MT4 device to the computer with a Serial cable.

Section 8: Backing Up, Restoring
and Upgrading
Backing Up
It is extremely important to back up your DynaVox Series 4 device after adding information or making changes. Backing up creates a copy of your information and can help prevent data loss in the event of a device failure. Once your user data is backed up, it can be restored to your device any time it is needed. The instructions in this section outline the recommended best practice for backing up a DV4/MT4 device.
When you complete the backup procedure, the DynaVox Series 4 software creates a backup (.bck) file includes the following information:
Abbreviation expansions Pronunciation exceptions
Communication pages Reminders
Dictionary entries Selection method settings
IR commands User preferences
Macros User Setup Wizard information
MP3 play lists
The backup file will not include the contents of the User Files folder (found in the File Browser menu). The User Files folder is meant to be a central storage spot. It includes sub-folders for Exports (files that will be shared), Images, MP3, Songs and Sounds. It is important to be aware of the User Files folder and to use it correctly as you are programming. Information that is saved in this folder will be less likely to be lost or overlooked than files that are saved in random places.
The User Files folder is not added to the backup file during the backup procedure. This means that if your image files, MP3 files, song files and sounds (digital recordings) are lost in a crash, they will not be brought back when you restore information from a backup file. The best way to preserve these files is to store a copy of the User Files folder in a safe place. The information in this copy can easily be restored to your device if and when necessary.

double-click on a topic in the index, information about that topic will be displayed in the right viewport.
You can also search for information on a specific topic. To do this, select the Search tab in the
left viewport. Then simply enter a word or phrase in the text box and select the Go! button. The left viewport will display all the entries that contain the word or phrase you entered. When you select one of the items in the list, information about that item will be displayed in the right viewport.
No matter what method you use to find information in the Searchable Help, you will notice that the text includes links (blue underlined words) that enable you to jump to related topics. These links are provided at the top of each topic, as well as throughout the text of the topic. Many topics have a series of links at the bottom, to provide easy access to relevant sub-topics.
If you would like to learn more about the tools for navigating the Searchable Help, please refer to the Using_Help.pdf file on the CD that includes the DynaVox Series 4 Searchable Help. For information about viewing some Searchable Help topics on your DV4/MT4 device, please refer to Appendix C: How To Help.

Appendix C: How To Help
Portions of the DynaVox Series 4 Searchable Help content are also available in the How To help feature on your DV4/MT4 device. This on-system help feature offers step-by-step information that answers the programming questions that our Technical Support representatives are asked most frequently.
To access How To help, follow these steps:
1. Select the pull-down menu button in the title bar at the top of the touch screen.
2. Select How To in the main pull-down menu.
Once the How To help feature is open, you can access information on two ways:
You can select the Index
tab and then choose a topic from the list that is displayed in the left viewport. When a topic is selected, the right viewport will display the related information.
You can look for a specific
topic by selecting the
Search tab. When the Search tab pane is
displayed, select the Search text box and then use the system keyboard to enter a search topic. After you select the OK button to close the system keyboard, select the Search button and any related topics will be presented in the left viewport. When you select one of the topics, the right viewport will display the related information.
Note: If you prefer to see the topic information displayed in a larger viewport, select the Hide Index
button after you choose a topic. When this button is selected, the right viewport will expand to fill the whole width of the How To window. Select the Show Index button to return the viewport to its normal size.

Appendix D: Page Editing Software
DynaVox Series 4 Page Editing Software is another resource that was shipped with your device. This software is a non-speaking version of the DynaVox Series 4 software on your DV4/MT4 device. Any pages, macros, songs, reminders or other information that are created with the page editing software can easily be transferred to your DV4/MT4 device. Page editing software is an ideal tool for page creation and programming in instances where several individuals share a device, or when the device is not available for programming. You can also use DynaVox Series 4 Page Editing Software to create and print low-tech communication boards.
To install the DynaVox Series 4 Page Editing Software, follow these steps:
Note: DynaVox Series 4 Page Editing software is available for Windows only.
1. Place the CD in your computer’s CD drive. It should launch within 10 seconds. If it does not,
double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop to find the CD drive, and then doubleclick on that drive.
2. Double-click on the SETUP.EXE file to launch the software installer.
3. Follow the instructions that are presented as the installer progresses.
Once the Page Editing Software is installed, you can use it exactly as you use the software on your DV4/MT4 device. Use this Quick Start and the DynaVox Series 4 Searchable Help as resources for creating pages and other information with the Page Editing Software.

Appendix E: USB Storage Devices
The USB storage device that you received from DynaVox has already been properly formatted to work with your Series 4 device.
You may purchase an additional USB storage device (also called “flash drives” and “USB drives”) at a computer electronic retail store.
Note: DV4/MT4 devices will not work with USB storage devices that are larger than 256 MB.
You must properly format a new USB storage device before you can use it with your Series 4 device.
Note: It is unnecessary to format the USB storage device that was shipped with your DV4/MT4
device.
To format a new USB storage device, follow these steps:
1. Save a copy of any data that is currently on the USB storage device in a secure place
2. Insert the USB storage device into one of the USB ports on the right side of your DV4/MT4 device.
3. A window will appear on the touch screen, asking if you want to format the UMS_FOLDER. Select the Yes button.
Note: Formatting the USB storage device will erase any files currently stored on it.
4. When the formatting is complete, select the OK button to close the window.
Once the USB storage device is formatted, you may disconnect it from your DV4/MT4 device, or leave it connected to begin sharing files. You may also copy back to the USB storage device any information that you stored somewhere else.
