Wireless Installation Considerations
The DHP-W220AV lets you access your network using a wireless connection from virtually anywhere within the operating range
of your wireless network. Keep in mind, however, that the number, thickness and location of walls, ceilings, or other objects
that the wireless signals must pass through, may limit the range. Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materials and
background RF (radio frequency) noise in your home or business. The key to maximizing wireless range is to follow these basic
guidelines:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the D-Link router and other network devices to a minimum - each wall
or ceiling can reduce your adapter’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of
walls or ceilings is minimized.
2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree angle appears
to be almost 3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick! Position devices so that
the signal will travel straight through a wall or ceiling (instead of at an angle) for better reception.
3. Building materials make a dierence. A solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative eect on range. Try
to position access points, wireless routers, and computers so that the signal passes through drywall or open doorways.
Materials and objects such as glass, steel, metal, walls with insulation, water (sh tanks), mirrors, le cabinets, brick, and
concrete will degrade your wireless signal.
4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical devices or appliances that generate RF noise.
5. If you are using 2.4 GHz cordless phones or X-10 (wireless products such as ceiling fans, lights, and home security
systems), your wireless connection may degrade dramatically or drop completely. Make sure your 2.4 GHz phone base
is as far away from your wireless devices as possible. The base transmits a signal even if the phone in not in use.

Section 2 - Installation
Hardware Installation
A minimum of two Powerline devices (your DHP-W220AV and another pre-existing device) are required to create a Powerline
network. Make sure your existing HomePlug AV device is plugged into a power outlet near your cable or DSL modem and
connected to your network.
Power
Plug the DHP-W220AV into an AC wall outlet where you want to extend your network and press the power button. The Power
LED on the DHP-W220AV will turn on to indicate it is receiving power. This may take up to 60 seconds.
Connect to Your Existing Network
Press the Simple Connect Button on the DHP-W220AV for 3 seconds. Then, press the Simple Connect Button on the existing
Powerline AV device for 3 seconds. This must be done within two minutes after pressing the Simple Connect Button on the
DHP-W220AV. The Powerline devices will reboot. Read the installation advice on the next page, and continue to “Conguration”
on page 12.
Plug in the Ethernet Cable
Connect one end of the supplied CAT5 Ethernet cable to the LAN port on the DHP-W220AV and the other end of the cable
to your computer’s Ethernet port. You may also connect to the DHP-W220AV over Wi-Fi with the information on the Wireless
Conguration Card to proceed to set up your wireless network.
Note: Network connectivity is conrmed when the Powerline LED indicators on both Powerline devices are steadily lit. This will indicate that your network
is now secure.

Powerline Installation Considerations
Plan the location of your Powerline devices:
1. Connect Powerline devices to electrical outlets that are not controlled by a
wall switch to avoid accidentally turning o power to the device.
2. Do not connect the Powerline devices to an extension cord, surge
protector, or power strip as this might prevent it from working correctly, or
negatively impact network performance.
3. Avoid using the Powerline devices in an electrical outlet that is located
near an appliance that uses a lot of power, such as a washer, dryer, or
a refrigerator. This may prevent the adapter from working correctly, or
negatively impact network performance.
4. Verify that your Powerline devices are electrically rated to operate with the power available in your location.
5. To help prevent against electrical shock, be sure to plug the power cables into properly grounded electrical outlets.
