Before You Begin

Recommended Tools Turning Off Your Computer Before Working Inside Your Computer
This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist:
You have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer. You have read the safety information in the Dell™ Product Information Guide. A component can be replaced or—if purchased separately—installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse
order.

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:

Turning Off Your Computer
NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close any open files and exit any open programs before you turn off your
computer.
1. Shut down the operating system:
Save and close any open files, exit any open programs, and click Start® Shut Down® Shut down. The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process is complete.
2. Ensure that the computer and any attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds.
Before Working Inside Your Computer
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety.
CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the
Product Information Guide.
NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by
its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.
NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is
not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty.
NOTICE: Unless otherwise noted, each procedure in this document assumes that a part can be replaced by performing
the removal procedure in reverse order.
NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. Some
cables have a connector with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the
computer.
1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.
2. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug it from the
network device.
3. Disconnect any telephone or network cables from the computer.
4. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
5. Close the display and turn the computer upside down on a flat work surface.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery before working inside the computer.
6. Remove the main battery:
a. Slide the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer until it clicks. b. Slide the battery out toward the back of the computer and lift to remove the battery from the bay.
NOTE: To replace the battery, follow the removal procedure in reverse order. When you are replacing the battery,
ensure that you properly insert the two battery tabs into the corresponding slots in the base of the computer.

7. Turn the computer top-side up and open the display.
8. Press the power button to ground the system board.
9. Remove any installed ExpressCard from the ExpressCard slot.
10. Remove any media from the optical drive, if installed.

Removing the Coin-Cell Battery
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product

NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching
an unpainted metal surface (such as the back panel) on the computer.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your
Computer) before working inside the computer.

4. Remove the existing coin-cell battery:
a. Disconnect the battery cable connector from the system board. b. Lift the coin-cell battery out of the battery compartment.
NOTE: You may experience slight resistance when you lift the battery because of an adhesive underneath the
battery that holds it in place.

1. Install the replacement battery:
a. With the positive side up, insert the battery at a 30-degree angle into the battery compartment. b. Connect the battery cable to the connector on the system board.

Optical Drive

Your computer ships with a fixed optical drive installed.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to drives, store them in a safe, dry place when they are not installed in the
computer. Avoid pressing down on them or placing heavy objects on top of them.
1. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer
2. Turn the computer upside down and remove the M2.5 x 8-mm optical-drive locking screw labeled with a lock icon ( ).
3. Insert a scribe into the indentation for the optical-drive locking screw, and push the notch on the metal tab to release the drive from the bay.
4. Pull the drive out of the drive bay.

1. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer
2. Remove the M2 x 3-mm screw from the internal card with Bluetooth® wireless technology (if installed).

7. Remove the seven M2.5 x 5-mm screws labeled "P" from the top side of the palm rest.
NOTE: The screw locations may vary slightly from the image shown.

8. Disconnect the coin-cell battery cable from the system board.
9. Disconnect the touch-pad connector from the system board.
NOTE: If you are unable to reach the touch-pad connector with the palm rest in place, you may want to wait
until step 11
10. Turn the computer upside down, loosen the captive screw, and remove the four M2.5 x 8-mm screws from the bottom of the computer.
when you can raise the palm rest enough to reach under it and access the touch-pad connector.

11. Lift the palm rest from the computer base:
a. Raise the palm rest at the back of the computer.
NOTE: If you were unable to disconnect the touch-pad connector with the palm rest in place (step 9), reach
under the palm rest to disconnect the touch-pad connector from the system board.
b. Slide the palm rest toward the front of the computer to release it from the four small tabs along the front of the
computer base, and remove it from the computer.
Replacing the Palm Rest
1. Align the palm rest with the computer base and gently snap the palm rest into place, taking care to align the tabs at the front of the base with the corresponding notches in the palm rest.
2. Reconnect the touch-pad connector to the system board.
3. Replace the coin-cell battery, if appropriate (see Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery
4. Reconnect the coin-cell battery cable to the system board.
5. Replace the seven M2.5 x 5-mm screws on the top side of the palm rest.
6. Turn the computer upside down, tighten the captive screw and replace the four M2.5 x 8-mm screws on the bottom of the computer.

Removing the Hard Drive
CAUTION: If you remove the hard drive from the computer when the drive is hot, do not touch the metal
housing of the hard drive.
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product
Information Guide.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your
Computer) before working inside the computer.
NOTICE: To prevent data loss, turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer) before removing the hard
drive. Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in standby mode, or in hibernate mode.
NOTICE: Hard drives are extremely fragile; even a slight bump can damage the drive.
NOTE: Dell does not guarantee compatibility or provide support for hard drives from sources other than Dell.

2. Turn the computer upside down and remove the four M3 x 3-mm screws.

NOTICE: When the hard drive is not in the computer, store it in protective antistatic packaging. See "Protecting
Against Electrostatic Discharge" in your Product Information Guide.
3. Slide the hard drive out of the computer.
4. Remove the hard drive from the hard drive carrier by carefully bending the carrier plastics with your fingers.

Replacing the Hard Drive
1. Place the new drive in the hard drive carrier from which you removed the original hard drive.
NOTICE: Use firm and even pressure to slide the drive into place. If you use excessive force, you may damage the
connector.
2. Slide the drive into the bay until it is fully seated.
3. Replace and tighten the four M3 x 3-mm hard-drive screws.
4. If you have installed a replacement hard drive, reinstall the Microsoft® Windows® operating system and the drivers for the new hard drive. For instructions, see "Restoring Your Operating System" and "Reinstalling Drivers and Utilities" in the Owner's Manual. Instructions for alternative solutions are available at support.dell.com/pcrt.
Returning a Hard Drive to Dell
Return your old hard drive to Dell in its original or comparable foam packaging. Otherwise, the hard drive may be damaged in transit.

7. Pull up on the pull-tab to disconnect the modem from the system board connector .

NOTICE: Do not disconnect the modem cable from the system board.
8. Disconnect the modem cable from the modem.
Replacing the Modem
1. Connect the modem cable to the modem.
NOTICE: Ensure that the modem cable is routed correctly when you replace the modem.
2. Connect the modem to the system board.
Align the connector on the bottom of the modem with the modem connector on the system board, and press down on the end of the modem labeled "PRESS HERE."
3. Replace the M2 x 3-mm screw.

Removing the Memory Module(s)
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product
Information Guide.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching
an unpainted metal surface (such as the back panel) on the computer.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your
Computer) before working inside the computer.
NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer warranty. NOTE: Your computer has two memory module connectors: "DIMM B" is located at the bottom of the computer, and
"DIMM A" is located underneath the keyboard.
1. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer
2. Remove the memory module in the connector labeled "DIMM B" which is located at the bottom of the computer:
a. Turn the computer upside down, loosen the captive screw on the memory module cover, and remove the cover.

NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the securing clips that
secure the memory module.
NOTICE: Handle memory modules by their edges, and do not touch the components on a module.
b. Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector
until the module pops up.
c. Remove the module from the connector at a 45-degree angle.
3. Remove the memory module from the connector labeled "DIMM A" which is located underneath the keyboard:
a. Turn the computer topside up, and remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover b. Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard

c. Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector
until the module pops up.

d. Remove the module from the connector at a 45-degree angle.
Replacing the Memory Module(s)
NOTE: If a memory module is not installed properly, the computer does not boot properly. No error message indicates
this failure.
1. Ground yourself and install the new memory module:
a. Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot. b. Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place.
If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.
2. For the memory module in the "DIMM A" connector, replace the keyboard and then replace the hinge cover.
For the memory module in the "DIMM B" connector, replace the memory module cover and tighten the captive screw.
NOTICE: If the memory module cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to
close may damage your computer.
3. Insert the battery into the battery bay, and connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet.
4. Turn on the computer.
As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information. To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click Start® Help and Support® Dell System Information.
NOTE: Since the computer operating system reserves some memory for system files and activities, the amount of
available memory that is displayed will be less than the total memory installed. If you install two 2-GB memory modules for a total of 4 GB, the memory total is reported as being less than 4 GB in the system setup program and by the Microsoft® Windows® operating system.
