Recommended Machine Electronic Control System Start Up Procedures
Performing Control System Checkout
A control system checkout consists of preparing an electrical checkout list and verifying the software
application to be run on the machine.
It also includes performing on-machine checks of the electrical and functional components.
Procedures to Follow Before Starting the Machine
Before you start the machine, perform the following procedures.
Prepare an electrical checkout list.
•
Verify the PLUS+1® GUIDE software application.
•
Prepare Electrical Checkout List
Prepare a checklist of all electronically-controlled machine work, propel, safety interlock, and other
electrical functions that must be tested to insure safe machine operation.
Make sure the list verifies that uncommanded machine behavior is not caused by an open or shorted
electrical connection.
Verify PLUS+1® GUIDE (Graphical User Integrated Development Environment) Software
Application
Compile and download the PLUS+1® GUIDE application to the same model of microcontroller(s) intended
to be used on the target machine.
Verify (simulate) the machine application on a test bench using breakout boards or some other means to
simulate inputs and outputs.
Do inputs and outputs behave as expected?
•
Do error conditions result in the machine control system going to a safe state?
•
If the CAN bus connection is interrupted, does the machine control system go to a safe state?
•
On-Machine Electrical Component Checkout
Unintended Machine Movement
Protect against unintended machine movement that can cause injury.
Warning
Unintended movement of the machine or mechanism may cause injury to the technician or bystanders.
To protect against unintended movement, secure the machine or disable/disconnect the mechanism
while servicing.
Best practice: Disengage the mechanical systems prior to downloading software. Lift the driven wheels or
tracks off the ground during start-up and test runs.
Verify On-Machine Electrical Components
Perform the following procedures to verify the on-machine electrical components are operating as
intended.
Supply voltage, measured at microcontroller, is above the minimum allowed level and below the
•
maximum allowed level.
Microcontroller/expansion module devices are connected to a common ground reference.
•
High current wires are separated from the machine CAN bus and PPU (pulse pick-up unit) signal
•
wires, (to minimize cross talk).
Shielding of low voltage signal wires may be required.

Microcontrollers/expansion devices signal wires and other electronic equipment are protected from
•
devices that are designed to emit electromagnetic radiation such as two-way radios.
Inputs to microcontrollers/expansion module devices are connected to the correct sensors/joysticks.
•
Polarity of all sensors is correct.
•
Microcontroller/expansion module device outputs are connected to the correct final control
•
elements (valves, pumps, motors, etc).
The machine E-Stop is functional.
•
Terminating resistors are in place at both ends of the CAN bus.
•
Proper strain reliefs are used in areas where wires will be moving or subjected to loads.
•
Machine wiring is not subjected to chafing against areas of the machine.
•
Wire terminations are secure.
•
On-Machine Functional Checkout
Unintended Machine Movement
Protect against unintended machine movement that can cause injury.
Warning
Unintended movement of the machine or mechanism may cause injury to the technician or bystanders.
To protect against unintended movement, secure the machine or disable/disconnect the mechanism
while servicing.
Best practice: Disengage the mechanical systems prior to downloading software. Lift the driven wheels or
tracks off the ground during start-up and test runs.
Verify On-Machine Functional Components
Perform the following procedures to verify the on-machine functional components are operating as
intended.
The Service Tool can communicate with all PLUS+1® devices after connecting the PLUS+1® Service
•
Tool to the machine CAN bus diagnostic port.
Proper application software is loaded in the microcontroller(s), using the PLUS+1® Service Tool.
•
All inputs are properly recognized by the microcontroller(s), using the PLUS+1® Service Tool.
•
Check all inputs—digital, analog, frequency, and so on—throughout their complete range.
‒
Machine propel, work and safety functions properly function, using the machine electrical checkout
•
list. If possible, operate individual machine functions in open loop (manual) mode before connecting
to the controlled system.
Up is up, forward is forward, and so on.
‒
The full range of machine motion can be safely achieved.
