The CHV-RSS is a remote slab sensor ideally suited for concrete slab,
under floor or outdoor mounting. It is an extremely accurate temperature
sensor potted within a stainless steel sleeve.
The CHV-RSS joins the inventory of Crestron
which include the CHV-RTS remote temperature sensor and the
CHV-RTHS remote temperature/humidity sensor.

temperature sensors,
Functional Summary
• Rugged waterproof construction - stainless steel housing
• Extreme accuracy
• Easy one-piece mounting (additional hardware not required)
• Readily connects to thermostat with two non-polarized wires
These sensors connect to the Crestron family of remote controlled
thermostat products, which includes two models: CHV-TSTAT and
CHV-THSTAT series. These thermostats are available with and without a
humidity sensor (all contain a temperature sensor).
Thermostat firmware version 1.xx supports two optional remote sensors.
Thermostat firmware version 2.xx and later supports four optional remote
sensor inputs, in any combination, for each thermostat. Firmware version
2.xx and later is required if you want to use the CHV-RSS as a slab
temperature sensor. Any firmware version may be used to operate the
CHV-RSS as an outdoor temperature sensor.
NOTE: If the maximum number of sensors is exceeded, some of the
sensors will be ignored by the system.
NOTE: The CHV-RTHS counts as two sensors because it measures both
temperature and humidity.
Specifications
SPECIFICATION DETAILS
Temperature Range -40º to 170º F (-40º to 77º C)*
Accuracy 1º F (0.5º C)
Wiring Two non-polarized wires
*Thermostat front panel indoor temperature display is limited to a range
of 0 to 110º F (-18º to 43º C). The front panel outdoor thermostat display
will display the full range of temperature.
Physical Description
Refer to the illustrations below and on the following page.
The sensor has a diameter of 0.32 inch (7.92 mm) and is 2.75 inches
(6.98 cm) long.
The CHV-RSS remote sensor is contained in a cylindrical stainless steel
housing.
CHV-RSS
NOTE: The sensor determines the temperature using the entire surface of
its steel housing. Do not mount the sensor where only a portion of the
housing is exposed to the environment.
As of the date of manufacture, the CHV-RSS has been tested and found to
comply with specifications for CE marking and standards per EMC and
Radiocommunications Compliance Labelling.
NOTE: This device complies with part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is
subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause
harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference
received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
Installation
Mounting Position
Crestron recommends that the sensor be placed inside a ½ inch Electrical
Metallic Tubing (EMT) conduit. This allows future sensor replacement, if
required. The radius of the bend at the wall should be approximately eight
inches, to allow for removal and replacement of the sensor.
NOTE: Maximum distance from sensor to thermostat is 500 feet
(152.4 m).
– Wire runs should be low-capacitance twisted pair wire such as CAT3
(up to 250 ft, 76.2 m) or CAT5 (up to 500 ft, 152.4 m) network cable.
– Other cable types are satisfactory, provided the total capacitance is less
than 7000 pF.
Hardware Hookup
The sensors are connected to the terminal blocks on the rear plastic
housing of the thermostat. Separate the thermostat from its backplate. The
thermostat terminal blocks mate to pins protruding out of the front
thermostat assembly. Up to two sensors of any kind may be connected on
a single channel except the CHV-RTHS, which counts as two sensors
because it measures both temperature and humidity.
Connection Example 1: Connecting one air temperature/humidity sensor
and one slab sensor (a CHV-RTS or a CHV-RTHS and a CHV-RSS) to
the thermostat, each on its own channel.
NOTE: Sensor wiring is non-polarized
1. Remote sensor 1 (CHV-RTS or CHV-RTHS) connected
to RS1 and RSR to sense air temperature/humidity.
2. Remote sensor 2 (CHV-RSS) connected to RS2 and RSR
to sense floor temperature.
