PHA1 Phono Amplifier Module

Description

The Crescendo-Systems PHA1 Phono amplifier module is designed as a high quality
amplifier for use with MM and MC type phone cartridges. The PHA1 features a

switchable gain to accommodate cartridges with different output levels. Additionally, the
high frequency roll-off caused by the cutting head, which is usually around 50KHz, can

be compensated for as well. The PHA1 strictly conforms to the RIAA curve with its three

breakpoints at 75µs, 318µs and 3180µs.

The PHA1 uses a hybrid technique to create the RIAA breakpoints. The first stage is an

active stage that creates the two lowest frequency corners. The second stage is passive
and forms the low-pass response at 3180µs; the 50KHz compensation is created in this

second stage as well. In order to accurately follow the correction curve, the PHA1 uses

1% metal film resistors throughout and 6 capacitors each 5% accurate in parallel in the
critical compensation sections in order to average component variation even more.
